  • Tokenizing JavaScript: A look at what’s left after minification

    - by InfinitiesLoop
Minifiers JavaScript minifiers are popular these days. Closure , YUI Compressor , Microsoft Ajax Minifier , to name a few. Using one is essential for any site that uses more than a little script and cares about performance. Each tool of course has advantages and disadvantages. But they all do a pretty good job. The results vary only slightly in the grand scheme of things. Not enough to make so much of a difference that I’d say you should always use one over the other – use whatever fits in with your...(read more)

  • Rejuvenated: Script Creates and Drops for Candidate Keys and Referencing Foreign Keys

    - by Adam Machanic
Once upon a time it was 2004, and I wrote what I have to say was a pretty cool little script . (Yes, I know the post is dated 2006, but that's because I dropped the ball and failed to back-date the posts when I moved them over here from my prior blog space.) The impetus for creating this script was (and is) simple: Changing keys can be a painful experience. Sometimes you want to make a clustered key nonclustered, or a nonclustered key clustered. Or maybe you want to add a column to the key. Or remove...(read more)

  • Homebrew LEGO CD Duplicator Copies CDs On The Cheap

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’d like to bulk copy CDs/DVDs without the sticker shock of a $500+ commercial duplicator, this DIY LEGO duplicator is a homebrew solution. Paul Rea wanted to rip and copy CDs and DVDs without shelling out for a commercial duplicator and without the hassle of being bound to that commercial duplicator’s propriety software. His homebrew solution–a combination of LEGO, a rotating base, an Arduino controller, and little ingenuity–handles his ripping and copying needs with ease. Watch the video above to see it in action then hit up the link below for the build log and Arduino code. • Code excavations, wishful invocations, perimeters and domain specific unit test frameworks

One of the talks I did at QCON London was about a subject that Ive come across fairly recently , when I was building SilverUnit a pure unit test framework for silverlight objects that depend on the silverlight runtime to run. It is the concept of cogs in the machine when your piece of code needs to run inside a host framework or runtime that you have little or no control over for testability related matters. Examples of such cogs and machines can be: your custom control running inside silverlight...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Dash music lens doesn't play music files

    - by scofandr
After installing 12.10 music lens in Dash worked not for a long time. After a little while buttons "Open in directory" and "Play" (or whatever there was) just dissapeared. The only thing I can notice is that I have immediately removed Rhythmbox (as I used to do) and installed Banshee from quantal main. Besides, track length is not being displayed correctly any more. Something like 4838:32 is shown. The situation is the same for both single tracks or albums. But music files from main menu (for example, recent files) in dash have all features working: "E-mail", "Open" and "Play". Is there any way to solve all this? Hope there's no need to reinstall Rhythmbox...

  • Ken Cox explores EF4s Pluralization Service with a WCF Service

When I have done “what’s new in EF4” talks at user groups and conferences, I like to show off the new pluralization support in the EDM Wizard. I also like to have a little fun showing some cases where it doesn’t do so well. For example, it correctly singularized Breweries to Brewery, but uses the same rule on Movies, turning it to Movy. The wizard uses a runtime feature referred to as the Pluralization Service which you can code against yourself. Ken Cox recently built a WCF...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • PHP TestFest 2010 - Time to Get Involved

    - by christopher.jones
Following a great 2009, the PHP community is organizing a repeat TestFest for 2010. São Paulo, Brazil kicked off the season on May 29th and their results are already up on the results page. The TestFest 2010 wiki page contains all the information about participating inTestFest 2010, including some nice little scripts for building PHP on various platforms. There is a loose structure to the TestFest: user groups coordinate local events, and of course individuals are welcome to contribute tests. The PHP QA mail list is a good place to ask questions (subscribe here).

  • Textures on top of other textures when using VBOs

    - by GameDev-er
I'm currently making a cube style game. With chunks being drawn with VBOs. I'd like to know if there is a way to create an overlay texture on top of the existing texture without the need to rebuild the VBO. This is required to show activity in a cube (think of Minecraft when destroying a block and the little cracks start spreading). I believe these are called "decals" but I've not found how to use them with VBOs. So how do I draw decals on OpenGL VBO drawn cubes?

  • Popup Details for a Table Record

    - by shay.shmeltzer
This one started as an OTN how-to question that seemed like something that should work automatically - turns out you need a couple of small tweaks to get it working. The idea is to have a table on a page showing multiple records, you can click any row in the table - and get a pop-up window that shows more data about that row. At first I thought I'll just need to drag the same view twice to the page - once as a table and then as a form in a pop-up. But then the Form didn't reflect the new row that got selected in the table - you'll always see the first row you selected. Adding a Partial Page Rendering between the table and the pop-up didn't do the trick either. Then I realized that the content delivery attribute of the pop-up was set to lazy, when I switched it to immediate - everything worked. Here is a little demo showing the whole development process: Note that the content delivery method attribute is also something you might want to check if you see your tables being refreshed too often when you scroll through records for example.

  • Connecting to Magento Web Services with Java

    - by kerry
I was in the unenviable position of needing to connect to Magento, a PHP ecommerce platform, web services using Java.  It was kind of difficult to get the classes generated from the WSDL so I figured I would throw the results up on my github account for any other poor sap in a similar position. First, pull down the project using git: git clone git://github.com/webdevwilson/magento-java.git and build it with maven: mvn install Here is a quick example of how to pull an order using the generated classes: MagentoServiceLocator serviceLocator = new MagentoServiceLocator(); String url = "http://domain.com/index.php/api/v2_soap"; Mage_Api_Model_Server_V2_HandlerPortType port = serviceLocator.getMage_Api_Model_Server_V2_HandlerPort(url); String sessionId = port.login("username", "key"); SalesOrderEntity salesOrder = port.salesOrderInfo(sessionId, orderId); I also have some wrapper code in there that makes it a little easier to call the API. Checkout the project at https://github.com/webdevwilson/magento-java There is another option. it’s called Magja and it is located at google code.

  • Unity3d generating a file in iOS and saving it on a linux machine

    - by N0xus
I've done a little research and don't know if the following is possible. At the moment I have created a small application in Unity that generates an XML file. This file will be used to help set up my game. It's done in Unity due to it being cross platform with no need to re-write a single line of code. Eventually this will run on an iPad. However, my game will be running on a linux computer and I need to pass over the XML file to the computer that will be running the final game (please don't ask why I'm doing that, it's something I need to do). So what I want to know is the following: Can I generate my XML file on an iPad and have that XML file be saved, and transmitted to a linux machine, without the need to manually copy the file over. If so, how is this possible?

  • Dual Control / Four Eyes Principle

    - by Ralf
I have the requirement to implement some kind of Dual Control or Four-Eyes-Principle, meaning that every change of an object done by user A has to be checked by user B. A trivial example would be a publishing system where an author writes an article and another has to proofread it before it is published. I am a little bit surprised that you find nearly nothing about it on the net. No patterns, no libraries (besides cibet), no workflow solutions etc. Is this requirement really so uncommon? Or am I searching for the wrong terms? I am not looking for a specific solution. More for a pattern or best practice approach.

  • Gnome Terminal tabs ugly and oversized

    - by adamnfish
Both gnome terminal and terminator (which I am using on my laptop these days) can be customised to look very pretty. By using full screen and keeping desktop clutter down to a minimum it's possible to get a good-sized area to work in, even on my little EeePC. However, there is one element that I don't seem to be able to control. Gnome's tabs are massively oversized and ugly at best. They don't fit into the theme at all which looks silly, but for me the biggest problem is the screen real estate that is wasted. On a small laptop screen in particular, it's a real problem. Is there a way to change these tabs? I realize it's possible to put them up the side of the window, but then they take up even more space! If this isn't possible with theme-ing or gnome configuration, are there any terminal programs like terminator that can handle the tabs themselves? (Ideally in a more elegant fashion!)

  • Personal | Going For A Long Drive

    - by Jeff Julian
This weekend, we were planning on going to Mt. Rushmore, but with the weather the way it is, we decided to head south instead. So what are we going to do? A tour of different restaurants on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Not very original I know since there are web sites and iPhone apps dedicated to locating the establishments, but it definitely sounds like it could be some fun. We are going to leave KC tonight and go through St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and back to KC. The kiddos are excited and we have plenty of movies, coloring books, etc in the car for the trip. This will be the first time we will get to use our turn around seats in the mini-van with our pull out table. I will have my laptop and phone if anything goes wrong with the site while I am gone and John will be back in KC as well. I hope to pushing some photos and reviews of the restaurants as we travel. • TDD - A question about the approach

    - by k25
I have a question about TDD. I have always seen the recommendation that we should first write unit tests and then start writing code. But I feel that going the other way is much more comfortable (for me) - write code and then the unit tests, because I feel we have much more clarity after we have written the actual code. If I write the code and then the tests, I may have to change my code a little bit to make it testable, even if I concentrate much on creating a testable design. On the other hand, if I write the tests and then the code, the tests will change pretty frequently as and when the code shapes up. My questions are: 1) As I see a lot of recommendations to start writing tests and then move on to coding, what are the disadvantages if I do it the other way - write code and then the unit tests? 2) Could you please point me to some links that discuss about this or recommend some books (TDD)?

  • Time based movement Vs Frame rate based movement?

    - by sil3nt
Hello there, I'm new to Game programmming and SDL, and I have been following Lazyfoo's SDL tutorials. My question is related to time based motion and frame rate based motion, basically which is better or appropriate depending on situations?. Could you give me an example where each of these methods are used?. Another question I have is that, in lazyfoo's two Motion tutorials (FPS based and time based) The time based method showed a much smoother animation while the Frame rate based one was a little hiccupy, meaning you could clearly see the gap between the previous location of the dot and its current position when you compare the two programs. As beginner which method should I stick to?(all I want is smooth animations).
