• Is there any replication standard or concept for application server data replication

  Hi friends, Say, I have a server that handles file based mass data and can process thousands of read requests and hundreds of provisioning requests(Add, modify, delete) per second. This is not SQL based database. Now i planned to implement replication. There should be master- master replication, master slave replication, partial replication(entries matching a criteria) and fractional replication(part of an entry). Is there any standard for implementing such replication mechanisms? Can you please suggest some solution overview? Thanks, Naga

• Fiscal year handling strategies in database design

  By fiscal year I mean all the data in the database (in all tables) that occurred in the particular year. Lets say that we are building an application that allows user to choose from different years. What way of implementing this would you prefer, and why: Separate fiscal year data based on multiple separate database instances (for example, on every fiscal year start you could create a new instance with no data) Have everything in one database, but with logic that automatically separates records from different years. Personally, I have "seen" both methods, and I would choose the second. The only argument I can think of for the first method is to have less records in case that these are really big databases - but still, you could "archive" old records by joining them in summaries or by some other way. What do you think?

  I have this type of data categories: today news - news item jobs news - news item general news - sub category news - news item So i have followed the very good tutorial 'Building an iPhone App Combining Tab Bar, Navigation and Tab' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBnPfAtswgw and all is good with the 1st two 'todays news' and 'jobs news' but can't figure out the best method for implementing the sub category table view? Do i use the same table view but reload it with the sub categories then some how work out when one is click that it's a sub category or is there a better method?   Context: I am implementing a flex auto-suggest combobox - as the user types in each character: Consider the string 'Stackoverflow' and user input = 'st' 1) the data provider is filtered to show all items starting with 'st' 2) text is set to auto-suggest string such that the un-typed part is highlighted. So for instance, the combobox text may contain st'ackoverflow', where 'ackoverflow' is highlighted using setSelectedIndex() Issue: When I hit back-space or delete, and check the 'this.text' value, I expect that the last un-highlighted character ('t' in the above case) gets deleted and the data provider is filtered to show all items starting with 's'. However the text property contains 'st', as before Question: what am I missing? What else can I try out?

• Winforms role based security limitations

  I'm implementing role based security using Microsoft's membership and role provider. The theoretical problem I'm having is that you implement a specific role on a method such as: [PrincipalPermissionAttribute(SecurityAction.Demand, Role="Supervisor")] private void someMethod() {} What if at some point down the road, I don't want Supervisors to access someMethod() anymore? Wouldn't I have to change the source code to make that change? Am I missing something? It seems there has to be some way to abstract the relationship between the supervisors role and the method so I can create a way in the application to change this coupling of role permission to method. Any insight or direction would be appreciated. Thank you.

• Handle Arbitrary Exception, Print Default Exception Message

  I have a program, a part of which executes a loop. During the execution of this loop, there are exceptions. Obviously, I would like my program to run without errors, but for the sake of progress, I would like the program to execute over the entire input and not stop when an exception is thrown. The easiest way to do this would be by implementing and except block. However, when I do this, it excepts all exceptions and continues with the program and I never get to see the exception message (which I need in order to debug). Is there a way to except any arbitrary exception and be able to print out the exception message in the except block?

• SAAS architecture and salesforce database architecture

  Hello all, I am architecting a software project and I want to create a SAAS (Software As a service) one. I want to model my application along the lines of Salesforce. I really like there customization features but I am not sure how they really go about it. I read that they create an ID for every field that is required and then store the corresponding data too. Can anyone guide me as to how this is possible. For example, if I want to store an employee record. 2 fields (firstname, lastname) are already given and the user adds a third field(say DOB), how is data going to be stored? I would also appreciate if someone could give me some resources to practical examples of implementing a SAAS architecture. Thanks

• jQuery: Dynamic image handling (waiting for load)

  I'm trying to write a plugin that has a built in function to wait until all images that are on the page to be loaded before it executes itself. $(window).load() only works if it's the initial load of the page, but if someone wants to pull down some HTML through AJAX that contains images, it doesn't work. Is there any good way of doing this AND implementing it so that it can be self-contained in the plug-in? I've tried looping over $('img').complete, and I know that doesn't work (the images never load, and the browser crashes under a "script takes too long to complete" bug). For an example of what I'm trying to do, visit the page I'm looking to house the plugin at: http://www.simplesli.de If you go to the "more uses" section (click it on the nav bar), you'll see that the image slideshow won't load properly. I know the current code doesn't work, but it's just holding place until I figure something out.

  Hi! I have a request for implementing a login system using local credentials + openId + facebook-connect. So a user could sign up/sign in using any of the 3 possibilities. I think that allowing OpenId AND facebook connect adds some flexibility in one had, but in other hand adds some restrictions since you have to integrate all different logic and make existing differences transparent for users. What do you think? Any good reference for managing federated login using both external mechanisms? Any well known site doing it right now?

• jQuery partial page refresh after form submit

  When using jQuery to submit a form is it possible to place the resulting page (after the submit) inside another HTML element? I'll try to make this clearer. Up to now I've been using Callback methods that among others do a document.forms['form'].submit(); whenever a form has been updated with new information and needs to be refreshed. However, this results in a full page refresh. I'm implementing Partial Page Refresh using jQuery and thought of using something like var newContent = jQuery('#form').submit(); jQuery('#div').load(newContent); However, that does not seem to work as the page is still fully refreshed. The content is correct, however the behaviour seems to be exactly the same as before - so I'm not really sure if what I want is actually possible with jQuery. Any hints and pointers would be helpful.   All I am looking for the best free set of tools to be used in a MS Based build process. Checkout, Build, Package, Test, Deploy, etc. I know this question has been asked before but it was over 2 years ago, and in our world that is an eternity. I am looking to develop a pattern that is easily adapted to similar projects. Almost like a template/cookie cutter system. I am currently looking into using CruiseControl, Powershell, MSBuild suite of tools. If we choose to move to 4.0 will we have issues? Are there better alternatives? Limitations ? Or will these pretty much meet my needs. One piece that i am never happy with is the process of packaging. We actually have opted in the past to just use Visual Studio Deployment Projects but those are very* ancient and my fear is WIX will be too complicated for the people implementing it.

• How To AutoScroll a DataGridView during Drag and Drop

  One of the forms in my C# .NET application has multiple DataGridViews that implement drag and drop to move the rows around. The drag and drop mostly works right, but I've been having a hard time getting the DataGridViews to AutoScroll - when a row is dragged near the top or bottom of the box, to scroll it in that direction. So far, I've tried implementing a version of this solution. I have a ScrollingGridView class inheriting from DataGridView that implements the described timer, and according to the debugger, the timer is firing appropriately, but the timer code: SendMessage(Handle, WM_VSCROLL, (IntPtr)scrollDirectionInt, IntPtr.Zero); doesn't do anything as far as I can tell, possibly because I have multiple DataGridViews in the form. I also tried modifying the AutoScrollOffset property, but that didn't do anything either. Investigation of the DataGridView and ScrollBar classes doesn't seem to suggest any other commands or functions that will actually make the DataGridView scroll. Can anyone help me with a function that will actually scroll the DataGridView, or some other way to solve the problem?

  WPF has a method that you can override which is the OnVisualChildrenChanged so when Children are added or removed you know about them. However, it silverlight there is no such method. So how would I go implementing this? I am trying to create a BubbleBreaker type of game and so I have a class that extends the Canvas. The canvas will lay out those said bubbles in a matrix grid. When they pop I need to know to move the bubbles to the left.

• Resources for rails widget creation

  My rails app is about to go live and I'm trying to figure out how to create a widget based on data on the site. My Javascript is not too hot--limited to the O'reilly head first book on JS. I can read simple Javascript okay but when it comes to writing it I'm a little lost. That said, I hope to roll out a widget, maybe a wordpress plugin too soon after my app is launched. Does anyone know of any rails plugins, javascript templates, tutorials or books that can get me going? I did ask a similar question before here: But my limited knowledge of JS kept me from implementing the suggested answer properly.

• How to activate SSL(HTTPS) in Glassfish 3.0 embedded API?

  We are implementing an application with a webservice as component and decided to use the Glassfish 3.0 embedded distri to provide the webservice. And it works. We need a SSL(HTTPS) connection to the webservice, but we didn't find any documentation or hint how to activate it programmatically via the embedded API. Thus we tried to configure the embedded Glassfish via domain.xml, what has a listener configured with SSL. And the port is reachable but only without SSL. The embedded Glassfish seem to ignore the configuration to activate SSL for the port. Has anyone experience in configuring embedded Glassfish with SSL?

• From actionscript to google's datastore through java.

  I'm working on a flash game written in pure actionscript 3.0 in Flex. I've just finished implementing replays for the game, but want to store the top 10 hiscores' replay data on my google-app-engine'd website. I'm using Java for the app-engine stuff in Eclipse in java but I have no idea how to deal with communicating to my java code from my actionscript code. I'll need to both read and write from actionscript - java - datastore. Does anyone have any experience with this? For note, I'm horribly noob with anything to do with web development. I hear you can pass arguments to a URL when calling it, comparable to command-line arguments on a desktop executable and if so then sending all the data as a large string would be doable... The question then would be how to call a url from AS3 code with additional data and then how to catch that on the java side. Thanks to anyone who can help. Jono

  Hello, I've looked at jTidy for converting a snipped of malformed/real-world HTML into well-formed HTML/XHTML. However, there's a bug in the latest version due to which I'm not able to use it. I'm looking at Jericho since it has a lot of positive reviews around the net. However, its not immediately obvious to me how one would go about implementing a method like: public String getValidHTML(String messedUpHTML) For instance, if it was passed <div>bar, it would return <div>bar</div> Any pointers would be helpful. • HttpWebRequest to different IP than the domain resolves to

  Hey, Long story short an API I'm calling's different environments (dev/staging/uat/live) is set up by putting a host-record on the server so the live domain resolves to their other server in for the HTTP request. The problem is that they've done this with so many different environments that we don't have enough servers to use the server-wide host files for it anymore (We've got some environments running off the same servers - luckily not dev and live though :P). I'm wondering if there's a way to make WebRequest request to a domain but explicitly specify the IP of the server it should connect to? Or is there any way of doing this short of going all the way down to socket connections (Which I'd really prefer not to waste time/create bugs by trying to re-implementing the HTTP protocol). PS: I've tried and we can't just get a new sub-domain for each environment.

  hi , i would like to program some graphic figures such as line, circle,etc. i have used turboc++ 3.0 for dos graphics. i would like to do the same with the compilers dev c++ or code blocks or vc++. i would like to implement dda and bresenhems line and circle drawing algorithm. how should i go about implementing these programs through these compilers (not the command line tools). i have a really vague picture of graphics programming.please help.. thanks in advance. please note : i have a nvidia graphics card 1gb.. so i cannot use dos graphics (i think the card is the reason).

• Making an svg image object clickable with onclick, avoiding absolute positioning

  I have tried to change the images on my site from to svg, changing img tags to embed and object tags(standard procedure, i think). But, implementing the onclick function, which previously was contained in the img tag is proving most difficult. I found onclick had no effect when placed inside the object or embed tag. So, I made a div exclusively for the svg, and placed onclick in this div tag. But, no effect unless visitor clicks on the edges/padding of the image. I have read about overlaying a div, but am trying to avoid using absolute positioning, or specifying positions at all. Maybe there's a way to do it without specifying postions? Or maybe theres another way to apply onclick to a svg. Has anyone encountered this problem? Questions and suggestions are welcome.

  I need to have resource messages that contain EL expressions be resolved when loaded from a ResourceBundle. Basically I have a number of properties files containing the text. Some of the text will look like the following: welcomeText=Welcome #{userbean.name} The only possible way I can see this working currently is implementing a custom taglib so that instead of saying: <f:loadBundle var="messages" basename="application.messages"/> I would have to use <mytaglib:loadBundle var="messages" basename="application.messages"/> #{messages.welcomeText} Given a user with username "User1", this should output Welcome User1 My implementation would then use a custom ResourceBundle class that would override handleGetObject, use the ELResolver to resolve variables etc....Ideas? suggestings? Implementations that are already available? I appreciate your assistance.

  I am implementing a "breakpoint" system for use in my Python development that will allow me to call a function that, in essence, calls pdb.set_trace(); Some of the functionality that I would like to implement requires me to control pdb from code while I am within a set_trace context. In other parts of this system, I would like to issue an 'up' command, or two sequential 'up' commands without leaving the pdb session (so the user ends up at a pdb prompt but up two levels on the call stack. Help me trace the source of the problem? in fact, WHY is my code even REACHING that particular region? I've just run the server. no clients have connected.. :@ ps - i know my code is highly unreliable (no error checks anywhere), but i WILL do that at a later stage, i just want to TEST the functionality of the code before implementing it in all it's glory ;)
