• Installing multiple ubuntu partitions on same machine without corrupting GRUB

  I had only ubuntu installed on my pc, but I felt like adding another ubuntu (same version) partition so I could have one just for work/study and another one just for personal generic use. I installed it and it worked out okay, but I found I needed more space on the new created Ubuntu partition, so I booted up from the Live CD, and used GParted to move/shrink/grow the partitions as the Ubuntu's tutorials suggested it was pretty straightforward. But in doing all this I messed up with Grub, so when I start my system it shows: error: unknow filesystem grub rescue What would be the easiest way to recover it so I could have both partitions working? Btw, it wouldn't be a problem for me to lose the partitions if it's the shortest/easiest way. Thanks in advance.

(so far so good). now I want to know for a given 2 objects(A,B), a start time and a speed, how can I work out the when and where to go. I can work out where A and B is given a time. so i just need. 1: direction to travel in from A to B(remember B is moving(not in a straight line)) 2: Time to get to b in a straight line. travel must be in a straight line with the shortest possible distance. as an extension to this question, how will i know if its better to wait, EG is it faster to stay on object A and wait for a hour when the objects may be closer, than to set off from A to B at the start. • Lost connectivity after configuring multiple network adapters on separate networks

  I am trying to setup an Ubuntu hosting server, currently just for development, and the server has two NICs, each sitting on a different network. eth0 is on 192.168.200.* and eth1 is on 192.168.101.* and each one has a static IP. eth0 is the public facing NIC card and eth1 is strictly for internal access to the server. I initially only setup eth0 and added the eth1 card when I needed it. eth0 was working find until I added eth1, now, can't get any connectivity on eth0 unless I pull eth1 out of the box. The configuration on each system is as follows: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.200.94 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.200.0 broadcast 192.168.200.255 gateway 192.168.200.253 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.101.64 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.101.0 broadcast 192.168.101.255 gateway 192.168.101.254 Again eth0 worked fine until I added eth1. I have seen this happen with Windows servers if you have a Default Gateway setup for both NICs, but I am not sure if this works the same on Ubuntu.   The screen shot shows the magento product upload page. The left nav allows you to switch to different options for the product. Basically each option in the left nav appears as a different page. However when you save and close, it will save all the updates made on each page. Using Foundation4, html, css, js - what would be the best approach to replicating something similar? Say I want 3 pages and one save button option. Using http://foundation.zurb.com/docs/components/section.html#panel2 and having the save buttons the top line form level seems a possible option.

My system runs under XP.   I have a class that contains multiple user objects and as such has an array of them as an instance variable: NSMutableArray *users; The tricky part is setting it. I am deserializing these objects from a server via Objective Resource, and for backend reasons users can only be returned as a long string of UIDs - what I have locally is a separate dictionary of users keyed to UIDs. Given the string uidString of comma separated UIDs I override the default setter and populate the actual user objects: @dynamic users; - (void)setUsers:(id)uidString { users = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray: [[User allUsersDictionary] objectsForKeys:[(NSString*)uidString componentsSeparatedByString:@","]]]; } The problem is this: I now serialize these to database using SQLitePO, which stores these as the array of user objects, not the original string. So when I retrieve it from database the setter mistakenly treats this array of user objects as a string! Where I actually want to adjust the setter's behavior when it gets this object from DB vs. over the network. I can't just make the getter serialize back into a string without tearing up large code that reference this array of user objects, and I tried to detect in the setter whether I have a string or an array coming in: if ([uidString respondsToSelector:@selector(addObject)]) { // Already an array, so don't do anything - just assign users = uidString but no success... so I'm kind of stuck - any suggestions? • Advantages to Multiple Methods over Switch

  I received a code review from a senior developer today asking "By the way, what is your objection to dispatching functions by way of a switch statement?" I have read in many places about how pumping an argument through switch to call methods is bad OOP, not as extensible, etc. However, I can't really come up with a definitive answer for him. I would like to settle this for myself once and for all. Arguments I can come up with in support of Oop scheme: A bit cleaner in terms of the code you have to write (less, easier to read, less keywords to consider) Not all actions delegated to a single method. Not much difference in execution here, but at least the text is more compartmentalized. In the same vein, another method can be added anywhere in the class instead of a specific spot. Methods are namespaced, which is nice. Does not apply here, but consider a case where Switch::go() operated on a member rather than a parameter. You would have to change the member first, then call the method. For Oop you can call the methods independently at any time. Arguments I can come up with in support of Switch scheme: For the sake of argument, cleaner method of dealing with a default (unknown) request Seems less magical, which might make unfamiliar developers feel more comfortable Anyone have anything to add for either side? I'd like to have a good answer for him.

• Multiple Issues - USB booting Ubuntu 12.04

  I've been using a Ubuntu 12.04 off a bootable USB stick so I can have a portable OS. Also, OS variety. I've been using it for a while and I'm still have a few issues. First and most annoying, it often lags/freezes. I'm not sure what word you would use for it, windows will often stop working and go dark/not responding from anywhere between 10 seconds to a full minute and on some occasions, even longer. However, the window eventually starts working again. Similarly, sometimes the whole system will freeze, not just the window. The mouse will still move, but nothing will work. No clicking, no menus, not keyboard shortcuts. Again, it will usually start working. I'm liking Ubuntu a lot, but those issues can make it annoying to use sometimes. For example, it will ALWAYS freeze at some point if I try to watching a Youtube video and I'll have to wait for a minute or so until it starts responding, again. Aside from the lag/freezing, anytime I download packages, it will always say "package operation failed" when it's done, though it does seem to download/install. Another issue I'm having is with shutting down. If I open the logout/shutdown menu and click shutdown, it just logs me out and takes me to the login screen. If I try shutting down through the login screen, it won't do anything. As if I didn't even go to it. I've been using the terminal to reboot or shutdown when I need to. I've looked around for answers for all of these problems and still have yet to find a solution that works. Are these just normal issues with USB booting? I haven't installed Ubuntu to any computers, I've always done USB booting.

• Can I set Windows default second-monitor behaviour to "Extend these displays"?

  I travel to multiple offices (and multiple desks in those offices), and whenever possible I plug an external monitor into my laptop. Whenever I plug in a monitor I haven't used before, Windows defaults to "Duplicate these displays" - which messes up the arrangement of icons on my desktop if the external monitor is a different shape from my laptop's monitor. I then select "Extend these displays", and my laptop screen returns to its original shape - but my icons don't go back to their original arrangement. Grrrrr. Fast-forward a few days or weeks; I've got my icons arranged so I can find stuff again - then I go to a new office and it starts all over again. I'm tired of this. Is it possible to make "Extend these displays" the default behavior? I'm using Windows 8 x64 Home Premium, but I had the same complaint under Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. (Prior to that, I hadn't discovered the joy of dual displays. Ah, the time I wasted...)

• Rendering multiple squares fast?

  so I'm doing my first steps with openGL development on android and I'm kinda stuck at some serious performance issues... What I'm trying to do is render a whole grid of single colored squares on to the screen and I'm getting framerates of ~7FPS. The squares are 9px in size right now with one pixel border in between, so I get a few thousand of them. I have a class "Square" and the Renderer iterates over all Squares every frame and calls the draw() method of each (just the iteration is fast enough, with no openGL code the whole thing runs smootlhy at 60FPS). Right now the draw() method looks like this: // Prepare the square coordinate data GLES20.glVertexAttribPointer(mPositionHandle, COORDS_PER_VERTEX, GLES20.GL_FLOAT, false, vertexStride, vertexBuffer); // Set color for drawing the square GLES20.glUniform4fv(mColorHandle, 1, color, 0); // Draw the square GLES20.glDrawElements(GLES20.GL_TRIANGLES, drawOrder.length, GLES20.GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT, drawListBuffer); So its actually only 3 openGL calls. Everything else (loading shaders, filling buffers, getting appropriate handles, etc.) is done in the Constructor and things like the Program and the handles are also static attributes. What am I missing here, why is it rendering so slow? I've also tried loading the buffer data into VBOs, but this is actually slower... Maybe I did something wrong though. Any help greatly appreciated! :)

  I have a software product. it will probably run on VMs that have no network connection at all. I want the user to pay for each VM the user runs. I thought to ask the user for some kind of hardware ID and provide him with serial that is unique for his machine. But user can just copy the VM image and than have two machines running? So I thought of having a security dongle. But how can I prevent user from running two VM's on the same machine both connected to the same dongle? This should be only basic defense so that actual hacking will be required to breach the license and not only spinning one more VM.

  I've been using dual boot on my PC for some time now, to use Ubuntu along side with Windows 7. One very disturbing thing happens, when Ubuntu linux core gets updated (this happens once in a while).   We need to switch users without logging off so we can remotely administrate a PC running with a limited user that will disconnect from the VPN if the user logs off. Because we block CTRL-ALT-DEL the PC effectively hangs until it is powered off. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening so we can change users without the PC hanging when they log off?
