• Add Background Images and Themes to Windows 7 Media Center

  Are you tired of the same Windows Media Center look and feel? Today we’ll show you how change the background and apply themes to WMC. Changing the Basic Color Scheme in WMC There are a couple of very basic color scheme options built in to Windows 7 Media Center. From the WMC Start Menu, select Settings on the Tasks strip and then select General. On the General settings screen select Visual and Sound Effects.   Under Color scheme you’ll find options for Windows Media Center standard, High contrast white, and High contrast black. Simply select a color scheme and click Save before exiting.   If you have used Media Center before you are familiar with the standard blue default theme. There is also the high contrast white. And, the high contrast black. Changing the Background Image with Media Center Studio Themes and custom backgrounds need to be added with the third-party software, Media Center Studio. You can find the download link at the end of this article. You can use your own high resolution photo, or download one from the Internet. For best results, you’ll want to find an image that meets or exceeds the resolution of your monitor. Also, using a darker colored background image is ideal as it should contrast better with the lighter colored text of the start menu. Once you’ve downloaded and installed Media Center Studio (link below), open the application select the Home tab on the ribbon and make sure you are on the Themes tab below. Click New. Select Biography from the left pane and type in a name for your new theme.   Next, click on the triangle next to Images to expand the list below. You’ll want to browse to Images > Common > Background. You should see a list of PNG image files located below Background. We will want to swap out the COMMON.ANIMATED.BACKGROUND.PNG and the COMMON.BACKGROUND.PNG images. Select COMMON.ANIMATED.BACKGROUND.PNG and click on the Browse button on the right.   Browse for your photo and click Open. Your selected image will appear on the left pane. Now, do the same for the COMMON.BACKGROUND.PNG. When finished, select the Home tab on the ribbon at the top and click Save.   Now switch to the Themes tab on the ribbon and the Themes tab below. (There are two Themes tabs which can be a bit confusing). Select your theme on the right pane and click Apply. Note: You won’t see the image backgrounds displayed. Your theme will be applied to Media Center. Close out of Media Center Studio and open Windows Media Center to check out your new background.   You can load multiple backgrounds images and switch them periodically as your mood changes. You might like to find a nice background featuring your favorite movie or TV show.   Perhaps you can even find a background of your favorite sports team.   Installing Themes with Media Center Studio Theme7MC has made available a small group of Media Center Studio Theme packs that are simple to download and install. You can find the download link below. Note: Before installing a theme, turn off any extenders and close Windows Media Center. Download any (or all) of the Theme7MC theme packages to your Media Center PC. Open Media Center Studio, select the Themes tab (the one at the top) and click Import Theme.   Browse for the theme you wish to import and click Open. Select your theme from the themes pane and click Apply. Media Center Studio will proceed to apply your theme. You should then see your new theme appear under Current theme on the left theme pane. Close out of Media Center Studio. Open Media Center and enjoy your new theme. Conclusion Media Center Studio runs on Windows 7 or Vista and gives users a solution for personalizing their Media Center backgrounds. It is a Beta application, however, so it still has a few bugs. Currently, there are only a handful of themes available at Themes7MC, but what they have is pretty slick. Downloading and installing Event Store and Tools Download Event Store http://download.geteventstore.com – I unzipped these files into C:\EventStore\v2.0.1 Download Curl from http://curl.haxx.se/download.html – I downloaded Win64 Generic (with SSL) and unzipped these files into C:\curl version 7.31.0 Running the tools I used in my presentation Demonstration 1 (running Event Store) You can use one of my Event Store runner command files to run the single node version of Event Store, using default ports of 2213 for HTTP and 1113  for TCP, and with a wildcard HTTP pattern.  Both take a single command line parameter to specify the location of the data and log files.  The runners assume the single node executable is located in C:\EventStore\v2.0.1, and will placed data files and logs beneath C:\EventStore\Data, i.e. RunEventStore.cmd TestData1 This will create data files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\Data and log files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\logs. If, when running Event Store you may see the following message, [03288,15,06:23:00.622] Failed to start http server Access is denied You will either need to run Event Store in an administrator console window, or you can use the netsh command to create a firewall permission to allow HTTP listening (this will need to be run, once, in an administrator console window), netsh http add urlacl url=http://*:2213/ user=liam You can always delete this later by running the delete; netsh http delete urlacl url=http://*:2213/ If you want to confirm that everything is running OK, open the management console in a browser by navigating to http://127.0.0.1:2213. If at any point you are asked for a user name and password use the default of ‘admin’/‘changeit’. Demonstration 2 (reading and adding data, curl) In my second demonstration I used curl directly from the console to read streams, write events and then read back those events. On GitHub I have included is a set of curl commands, CurlCommandLine.txt, and a sample data file, SampleData.json, to load an event into a DDDNorth3 stream. As there is not much data in the Event Store at this point I used the $stats-127.0.0.1:2113 which is a stream containing performance statistics for Event Store and is updated every 30 seconds (default). Demonstration 3 (projections) On GitHub I have included a sample projection, Projection-ByRoom.txt, which will create streams based on the room on which a session was held on the DDDNorth3 agenda. Browse to the management console, http://127.0.0.1:2213.  Click on Projections, New Projection, give it a name, Sessions-ByRoom, and copy in the JavaScript in the Projection-ByRoom.txt file.  Select Continuous, tick Emit Enabled and then click on Post. It should run immediately. You may by challenged for the administration login for the management console, if so use the default user name and password; 'admin'/'changeit'. Demonstration 4 (C# client) The final demonstration was the Visual Studio 2012 project using the Event Store client – referenced directly as C:\EventStore\v2.0.1\EventStore.ClientAPI.dll, although you can switch this to the latest Event Store client NuGet package. The source code provides a console app for viewing projections with the projection manager (HTTP connection), as well as containing a full set of data for the entire DDDNorth3 agenda.  It also deals with the strategy for reading newest events backwards to older events and ignoring older events that have been superseded. • Downloads killing internet on my home network

  I am currently having a problem with my wireless. Whenever I try to download anything it kills the internet for every other application(tabs within the same browser, browsers on other computers on the same network) except the process doing the download. This occurs with everything from downloading updates to iso's. I am not using a torrent. It happens when downloading upgrades, browser downloads, or anything else. This problem does not occur when I use Windows 7 on the same computer and it stops killing the internet for other computers if I turn the download/Ubuntu off. I am using an ASUS G74SX laptop running Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. My wireless card is an Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N + WiMAX 6150 (rev 67) Thanks!

• How do I install pepper-flash on Chromium?

  I have Chromium web browser on my Lubuntu 13.04 (pre-installed). I use LX Terminal (pre-installed) to write commands. I am trying to download flash player on Chromium using instructions on this site : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:skunk/pepper-flash After typing in my password, this worked. Now sudo apt-get update I didn't need to type in my password, as I continued on the same terminal, but got W:/ and E:/ fetch file errors sudo apt-get install pepflashplugin-installer I continued on the same terminal despite the fetch file errors... and they said pepflashplugin-installer could not be found. Is the last error because of fetch file errors, or because I need to download pepflash-plugin-installer somewhere? Or is it because of something else? I cannot download the Chrome browser, and not looking to use flash player on my Firefox web browser (installed using lubuntu software centre).

Notepad++ has various add-ons available for it. - When you download it, be sure to run its internal update function. Needless to say, all three are better than Notepad!

• Podcast Best Practices - Page Development & Monetization Considerations

  Our current podcast page has show notes and a link to download an mp3 of our podcast. We were advised to add an audio player to stream the file live from our website. The thought being this would improve time spent on our site and allow for greater advertising dollars. Is it better to have a page with show notes, an mp3 for download AND also stream the podcast live OR just stick to the show notes & mp3 download? Does anyone see any affect on advertising revenue, either way?

• Is there any way to add a new location to the list of places where nltk looks for the wordnet corpus?

  I can't use the nltk wordnet lemmatizer because I can't download the wordnet corpus on my university computer due to access rights issues. I get the following error when I try to do so: ********************************************************************** Resource 'corpora/wordnet' not found. Please use the NLTK Downloader to obtain the resource: >>> nltk.download() Searched in: - '/home/XX/nltk_data' - '/usr/share/nltk_data' - '/usr/local/share/nltk_data' - '/usr/lib/nltk_data' - '/usr/local/lib/nltk_data' ********************************************************************** When I had the same issue at home, I could resolve it by two ways: Using nltk.download(), the standard way and Creating a new folder at location /home/XX/nltk_data and just pasting the corpus directory inside it. Now at the university I only have access to /home/XX/bin and not /home/XX directly. So is there anyway I could paste the wordnet corpus into /home/XX/bin and then somehow make nltk look for the corpus in that folder?

• Upgrade Workshop in Wellington - Recap

  Wow! Wellington is really a wonderful city - except for the weather situation But it was the first time that Roy and me did arrive to a workshop with a ferry boat. We flew in on Friday to Christchurch (btw, this was the longest customs and border control I've ever went through - and I traveled to Israel by Bus via Allenby Bridge from the West Bank some years ago - it took us two hours to go through immigration and customs in the night from Friday to Saturday) and drove up the Southern Island. • How do you Install the Latest Release of Miro?

  In the software centre the latest release of Miro available is 4.0.4 whereas the latest release of Miro is 5.0.4. How do I download 5.0.4 on 12.10? I have tried following the guide at http://www.getmiro.com/download/for-ubuntu/ (and thus have already run sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pcf/miro-releases) but it failed and when I tried to run sudo apt-get update I received the error: W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/pcf/miro-releases/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/pcf/miro-releases/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

• How to set up an environment for android app development?

  I have been researching for sometime now regarding the process to install android sdk and associated tools . After visiting Android Developers page, i first installed the android sdk and then installed eclipse plugins for my indigo version from the install softwares options.However, it is mentioned in the developers page : Download the Android SDK. Install the ADT plugin for Eclipse (if you’ll use the Eclipse IDE). Download the latest SDK tools and platforms using the SDK Manager. I have downloaded the sdk and installed the adt plugins for eclipse.I just need to point the eclipse towards the location of the sdk. However, i am stuck at the last step which is asking me to download the latest tools using the sdk manager. The manager interface pops up and i see a lot of options there. I don't know which ones i must select and install. If some one can help me out here and tell me which options to choose and install(if possible, with a screen shot), it will be very beneficial for me.

• Save to Hard Drive instead of bootable USB

  I followed the instructions on the Ubuntu website on how to put Ubuntu 12.04 on a USB and make it a bootable USB stick for windows. It worked fine and I can boot up and run Ubuntu, but every time I try to download software or change settings it tries to save it to the USB rather than the hard drive built into the computer. The USB doesn't have enough space so the download fails and in addition it doesn't retain setting changes so when I restart my computer all the settings return to default and anything I saved is gone. Is there any way to change things so that when I download software or change settings Ubuntu will save it to my hard drive instead of the USB?

• Why are downloads from Canonical Partners repository so slow?

  If I need Sun Java, Adobe Flash Plugin or anything else that comes from Canonical Partners the package downloads are painfully slow even small sized packages like the Flash plugin, to speed things up I have to go here: http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/partner/ to find what I want, download the packages with a download manager (which is usually about 20 times faster than the package manager) and then place them in my /var/cache/apt/archives folder I run the package manager afterwards, as long as the right versions of the packages I ask to install are detected in the /var/cache/apt/archives folder they will be installed immediately. I would like to stop doing this, so I am wondering if anyone else has this problem, what could be the cause and if there is a fix. I am located in the Western Caribbean region. I think it would be helpful to note that all other packages coming from the repository I have selected with synaptic download at acceptable speeds.

• Wine issue - Can not start Fifa World (free 2 play)

  I tried to install and start fifa world on ubuntu 14.04, wine version 1.7.19 I created 32 bit wine prefix on my ubuntu 14.04 wine 1.7.19 Downloaded origin full setup(3db5cf0281c282d33dce939d0934c5ba) 95,6 MB File and installed it.
