• Send an E-mail Quickly with the GmailThis! Bookmarklet

  Sometimes you need to send out a quick e-mail for a project that you are working on, something really important that you just remembered, or perhaps just a note to yourself. If you use Gmail and like keeping things simple then join us as we look at the GmailThis! Bookmarklet. GmailThis! in Action To get set up all that you need to do is visit the webpage (link provided below) and drag the bookmarklet to your “Bookmarks Toolbar”. For our example we decided to go with the “personal note” approach. As you can see here we selected/highlighted a portion of the text and then clicked on our new bookmarklet. The bookmarklet will automatically copy and paste the name of the webpage, the URL, and any text that you selected/highlighted into the new e-mail. A nice feature that we liked was that it opened in a new temporary window to help focus on composing our letter. This is what you will see when you have finished your letter and clicked “Send”. The window will automatically close itself after a few seconds so that you do not even have to worry with it afterwards. Looking at our “Inbox” there is our new e-mail looking oh so nice. Conclusion If you need to send out a quick e-mail using your Gmail account then this bookmarklet makes it as quick and simple as possible. • Base Pages and Interfaces for ASP.NET Pages

  For quite a while I have been using the concept of base pages when developing pages in ASP.NET applications. It is a wonderful method for exposing common functions to all of your applications pages and also overriding certain events for various purposes (i.e. dynamic themes).  Recently I found out a new developer will be joining my team. This prompted me to review the applications code for readability and ease of maintenance. I began adding comments through out the code behind for all pages within the application. While doing so I noted that I had used common method names for such things as loading data, configuring controls, applying filters, etc.   Bringing a new developer on board, I wanted to make the transition as seamless as possible while also ensuring they follow existing coding practices we already have in place. While I could have created virtual methods for the common page methods allowing them to overridden, what I really needed was a way to ensure the new developer implemented the same methods for each and every page. Thus I created an interface to force the issue.   Now, every page not only inherits the base page class but also implements an interface. • Cannot add custom keyboard shortcut

  I'm trying to assign custom shortcut to launch my own script (I don't need it in terminal window, just launch it) So, I went to Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts - Custom Shortcuts, pressed the button with "+" and entered the name of shortcut and the command itself. But then I cannot bind keys to that shortcut. I selected a new row and pressed needed keys (Shift + F3) and nothing happens. I can change the keys for system shortcuts, but do not have any luck with my own. Any ideas?

  I have to plugin my USB Audio adapter ( 4300054 Gigawire USB Audio Adapter) for audio input because has a combo-input-output port for voice. After I do this, I have go open Sound Settings and manually select the USB Audio adapter for Input and Output, if I do not, the system default remains selected. Is there anyway, I can make Ubuntu to automatically select the USB Audio Adapter as the default as soon as I plug-in?

• Screen will not load in 11.04 alpha 3

  After updating from 10.10, there were no problems everything updated fine. I restarted the computer and selected Ubuntu from the boot menu but nothing came. it only shows a a black screen and it allows me to type. I have a feeling that this might be to do with the graphics driver, but how would i get a driver if nothing shows? I have ati radeon 5450 which runs with Catalyst Control Center on Windows. How can fix this?

• Lookup Viewer

  The Maven integrated view that I showed yesterday I was able to create because I happened to know that an implementation of SubprojectProvider and LogicalViewProvider are in the Lookup of Maven projects. With that knowledge, I was able to use and even delegate to those implementations. But what if you don't know that those implementations are in the Lookup of the Project object? In the case of the Maven Project implementation, you could look in the source code of the Maven Project implementation, at the "getLookup" method. However, any other module could be putting its own objects into that Lookup, dynamically, i.e., at runtime. So there's no way of knowing what's in the Lookup of any Project object or any other object with a Lookup. But now imagine that you have a Lookup Viewer, as a tool during development, which you would exclude when distributing the application. Whenever new objects are found in the Lookup, the viewer displays them. You could install the Lookup Viewer into NetBeans IDE, or any other NetBeans Platform application, and then get a quick impression of what's actually in the Lookup when you select a different item in the application during development. Here it is (though I vaguely remember someone else writing something similar): Above, a Maven Project is selected. The Lookup Window shows that, among many other classes, an implementation of SubprojectProvider and LogicalViewProvider are found in the Lookup when the Maven Project is selected. If an item in the Lookup Window has its own Lookup, the content of that Lookup is displayed as child nodes of the Lookup, etc, i.e., you can explore all the way down the Lookup of each item found within objects found within the current selection. (What's especially fun is seeing the SaveCookieImpl being added and removed from the Lookup Window when you make/save a change in a document.) Another example is below, showing the Lookup Window installed in a custom application created during a course at MIT in Boston: A small trick I had to apply is that I always show the previous Lookup, since the current Lookup, when you select one of the Nodes in the Lookup Window, would be the Lookup of the Lookup Window itself! If anyone is interested in this, I can publish the NetBeans module providing the above window to the NetBeans update center.

• Ubuntu is booting on acer e1-510 laptop, but screen displays nothing

  Tried loading ubuntu 12.04 (32-bit as well 64 bit) through bootable usb , on a brand new 64-bit acer E1-510 laptop. It shows the 'Try ubuntu without installing screen' and I selected that option. But instead of showing ubuntu's logo(which implies it is loading). I get a blank screen. The screen is on, but it shows nothing. I tried the same on an old model laptop acer aspire 5738 and it worked like a charm. However, I realized that Ubuntu is actually booting on E1-510 and only the display is not working. How did I arrive at this conclusion? When I select on 'Try ubuntu without installing screen', after about 8-10 seconds I see that the WiFi indicator light on the laptop panel switches on(just like when we boot up a Windows OS or even Ubuntu ). I got an idea that the system booted Ubuntu. To confirm this, I tried to adjust volume using keyboard shortcuts. Voila, I can hear the sound of adjusting volume! That means it has already booted Ubuntu. I confirmed this with another step. I pressed the power button once and after two seconds I pressed ENTER. It began the process of switching off and within 5 seconds the laptop was powered off. You may ask, Why is this a confirmation that Ubuntu has booted? This is because in Ubuntu when you press on power button, a dialog box opens with shut down, restart, suspend option- and the shut down option is already selected by default; so all I have to do is press ENTER to shut down. This again proved that Ubuntu was indeed up and running. Unlike previous 'AskUbunutu' posts about Acer e1-510, I must mention that my laptop came WITH the Legacy BIOS mode, so its not really a problem to boot ubuntu from a bootable pendrive. Only the screen is not working. In case you need to know, I am running Windows 7-Ultimate 64 bit on acer e1-510.

All rights reserved MatheMagic – Guess My Age – Method 1 The Mathemagician stands on the stage and asks an adult to do the following: ·         Do the next few steps on your calculator, or the calculator in your phone, or even on a piece of paper. ·         Do it silently! Don’t tell me the results until I ask for them directly ·         Compute a single digit multiple of 9 – any one of 9, 18, 27, … all the way to 81, will do. ·         Now multiply your age by 10 ·         Subtract the 9 multiple from this number. ·         Tell me the result. Notice that I don’t know which multiple of 9 you subtracted from 10 times your age. I will nonetheless immediately tell you what your age is. How do I do this? Let’s do the algebra. 10X – 9Y = 10X – 10Y + Y = 10(X – Y) + Y Now remember, you asked an adult, so his/her age is a two digit number (maybe even 3 digits), thus reducing it by the single digit multiplied by nine is still positive – the lowest is can be is 100 – 81 which yields 19. Now make two numbers out of the result. The last digit and the number before it. This number is X – Y or the age minus the single digit you selected. The last digit is this very single digit. This is always so regardless of the digit you selected. So… Add tis digit to the other number and you get back the age! Q.E.D Example: I am 76 years old and here is what happens when I do the steps 76 x 10 = 760 760 – 18 = 742 made of 74 and 2. My age is 74 + 2 760 – 81 = 679 made of 67 and 9. My age is 67 + 9 A note to the socially aware mathemagician – it is safer to do it with a man. The chances of a veracious answer are much, much higher! The trick may be accomplished on any 2 or 3 digit number, not just one’s age, but if you want to know your date’s age, it’s a good way to elicit it.   I booted Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from a LiveUSB, and then selected the option to install Ubuntu to my hard drive. I allowed the installer to partition it, giving Ubuntu 50GB and leaving Windows 7 with 200GB. However, when I boot I still boot straight into Windows: the only way to access GRUB is by booting from the LiveUSB, although this can then be removed. How do I access the GRUB menu by default before booting windows without using the USB?

• Evolution not downloading messages for offline use

  Even though I've selected "Copy folder content locally for offline operation" on my inbox and "Automatically synchronize account locally" in my account options, Evolution still only downloads headers for my inbox. When I click an email, its downloaded from the server. I want all my emails to be available to read offline - As far as I know this should be possible, so is my configuration that's wrong, or is it a bug?

• My Laptop Beeps when I try to USB boot install

  I tried to boot install Ubuntu using my laptop (without CD Drive) using a USB drive, then it goes to the boot selection menu (the one with the Ubuntu logo installation options). I selected Install then my laptop just beeps - 1 short beep, after that it stops then nothing installs, it just stays at the installation menu, can someone please help? Laptop Specs Neo Notebook (forgot the model version) 2GB RAM running Win XP SP3 150GB Hard Drive memory Would really appreciate if someone helped, I just used the normal 12.04 installer.

• How to remove outlines around windows when switching with Alt+Tab?

  When I switch windows on current Unity using Alt+Tab, I get an ugly outline of size of the selected window occasionally showing on random places. Is there a way to change this outline to something better looking or eliminate it altogether? NB These outlines appear on Ubuntu Desktop without any effects enabled. • Nautilus copies files but not directories from samba server on OS X

  I need to copy files from OS X on a Mac to Ubuntu on a PC. I enabled File Sharing on the Mac and selected the samba option. I was then able to connect to the samba server in Nautilus. Copying files was no problem, but copying directories failed, with the error message "is a directory". I can accomplish what I want using samba in the terminal. But it would be more conveninient to do this in Nautilus.
