  • Anyone know how to get dual screens working on a Dell E6410 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit?

    I've installed the drivers from nVidia. When I go into the NVIDIA X Server Settings application, in the X Server Display Configuration setcion, and click the "Configure" button, "TwinView" is disabled. Also, clicking "Detect Displays" doesn't pick up my monitor (which is connected through a port replicator - keyboard and mouse in that port replicator work fine). Has anyone else seen this? Is this just a limitation of the current nvidia linux drivers?

    I kept thinking about this, and out of sheer curiosity, I decided to ask: If music isn't loud enough. How do I get the best quality?(Even if the difference is in fact so small it's neglectible) By making the music louder in my music player, game or other sound-producing software program. By raising the volume at the Operating System level (for instance, by clicking the 'speaker' icon on the windows bar and turning the volume up) By turning the volume up on the Amplifier or Speakers that are attached to your computer, and thus changing the volume on the 'hardware' Does programs vs OS matter?   • Anyone know a good web-based file upload package?

    Basically, what I'm looking for is a place for either one of our end users to be able to upload a file to this package, after either receiving a code from one of our support engineers or vice-versa(our engineers upload a file and send a code/link/something to end user) I've spent a bunch of time googling this, I found this: http://turin.nss.udel.edu/programming/dropbox2/, but the code there scares me, and it also doesn't render properly using PHP 5.3(uses short tags, who knows what else.) Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • Does anyone know why rsync would keep sending the files over and over again?

    I'm trying to using rsync to backup some files, about half a TB. It's now it a state where it keeps sending the same files everytime it runs. for example: rsync -av /data/source/* user@host:/data/dest sending incremental file list source/file1.txt source/file2.txt I then verify those files are copied over... then the next time it runs it does the same thing rsync -av /data/source/* user@host:/data/dest sending incremental file list source/file1.txt source/file2.txt any idea why it's getting stuck on these files? I've tried to wipe the whole dest directory out and start over but no luck. thanks,

  • How do I know if DirectX is using hardware acceleration or software rendering?

    Is there any DirectX diagnostcs tool which will allow me to understand if Graphics acceleration from my GPU is actually working or software rendering is kicking-in instead? I ask this because If I go properties (right click on desktop) -- settings -- I get an error saying my drivers are not working for my Intel Embedded GPU (Intel Embedded Graphics Driver - IEGD) and the system is defaulting to standard VGA drivers. I am on WinXP Professional.

    I am about to purchase a laptop and have zeroed on the following two of them. Toshiba L500-ST2544 Toshiba L505-ES5034 The Common Specification for both of them are as follows - RAM - 4GB DDR3 Memory HDD - 320 GB Processor - Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor WebCam and Mic - Available HDMI Port - Available Numeric Key Pad - Available Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium Now, the only difference between ST2544 and ES5034 is that, the ST2544 has a maximum of 2 slots with 2 GB in each. So, you can have a max of 4 GB RAM in that. The ES5034 can support 8 GB RAM, so, in a couple of years, if I want to add another 4 GB RAM I will be able to do it. The price for ST2544 is USD 629.00 whereas, the price for a ES5034 is USD685. A difference is USD 55.00 (not a major amount, but still something extra). Is it worthwhile going for the ES5034? Which Windows Operating System supports 8 GB of RAM?

  • Anybody know how to get podcasts sorted correctly on a Zune?

    If I could understand the logic behind it I could actually manage to get my stuff sorted correctly on the device. It doesn't matter how things are sorted on disk, or in the software itself. As items are added to the sync list they end up sorted in some weird manner which, quite frankly, brings out an anger in me that scares me. A primitive, misshapen and unthinking anger. Kind of like the lumpy guy in Altered States. Frankly, I'm afraid one day its going to burst forth and I will track down the entire Zune team and make them pay for their failures. Help me prevent this from happening. Help me understand what I need to do to ensure my podcasts end up in the order I wish them to be in, not some obscure random order that makes no sense.

Anyway, I have now collected over 200 snippets for my programming, but I need to sort them out Putting them all in a textfile with some obvious breaks inbetween I could sort them and tag them for another snippet programm.   • Do you know of any ways to effectively manage a triple screen setup brightness?

    I use a desktop with multiple monitors I have tried F.lux and it is a great app for changing the color from 3500k-6500k... but doesn't adjust screen brightness. (I recommend you try it) I've googled for hours trying to find an app that will work to let me easily manage screen brightness either by a "dim when idle" or a dynamically updating screen brightness based on the time of day. Windows 7 desktop doesn't seem to have options for me to adjust brightness on the system, and manually changing three separate monitors is too much of a chore? Anybody have some recommendations? Perhaps a way to script this, knowledge of how to use the supposed dynamic screen brightness functions that Windows was supposed to add in Windows 7?

    I want to set up an Oracle Linux 6 server that gives users secure IMAP email (with dovecot), Jabber IM, FTP (with vsftpd), and calDav. However, I want each user logon to be able to authenticate all services (e.g. Joe Smith signs up once for a username and password that he can use for email, ftp, and his calendar). My question is, which database service will be best suited for that application? Also, is there a way to link the database with the preexisting server shell logins (e.g. so I can read the root account's LogCheck emails on a different device)?

  • When an Excel file is locked on a network share, how does it know who locked the file?

    We are using Excel 2010 and sometimes users are working from a network share. When a user on the network opens the file in Excel, the file is locked for editing - this is the expected behavior. When another user tries to open the file, Excel gives the message [filename] is locked for editing by 'John Doe' The problem is, the user is always this one particular user's name, no matter who actually has the file open. Where does Excel get this info, and how do I fix it? Update: I should have mentioned that in Excel, under Options (General), the correct user names have been set up. That is not where this user name is coming from.

    I´m trying to update my D-link Dir-600 router with the dd-wrt firmware. I´ve searched for it at the site and found that: Revision A1, B1 and B2 are supported, while C isn´t. Now my router has this information on the back: P/N IIR600GNA .... C1G H/W Ver: C1 F/W Ver: 3.01 So I guess the H/W Ver is the revision, and it´s C... so it´s a lost cause? Or maybe because it´s not just C but C1 I could do something with it? Thanks!

  • MS Excel and Access - which is better for reports?

    Where I work, staff have just started to use a basic table in excel (1 october) to record sales which has about 10 columns (name, client, renewed, discount, paid etc). I record the data (total sold etc) every hour and email it to the manager. Each staff has the their own file on the network which they use constantly for that day (eg. John 08-10.xlsx; John 09-10.xlsx etc) and have been told to save the file after they complete a row with client data. I can see the file (in read only mode) to update the report but I am sure there must be a way of doing an autoupdate of their worksheets in real time. I can link worksheets and workbooks to my main workbook but manually. Does anyone have suggestions on have to do this on Excel? Or would Access allow me to make a report which shows the sales total for that hour without the staff closing the file or constantly clicking save every few minutes? We use office 2010. thanks

  • Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

    We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)? Does my Xeon support hardware virtualisation? The processor in question is a: "Nocona" (standard-voltage, 90 nm) 2800MHz. The web server tries to send a packet to the client, but the firewall somehow came to the conclusion that this packet is "UNRELATED" to any prior traffic.     Is it possible to mirror the two directories without overwritting the files in destination directory with new/changed/deleted files. Something like snapshots. Example: Copy the source directory with all files and sub-directories to destination directory, but if destination directory contains, for example, file A.xls and A.xls has been changed in source directory then copy A.xls but keep the previous A in destination directory as well. To preserve the previous file a datestamp, or counter can be added to the file name. Example after copy: SomeDirectory |--A.xls |--A_20120701.xls |--A_20120920.xls Thank you.

  • Why does HDTune report better performing drives 2 months after installing them?

    OK, so this is really weird. I ran HDTune on a newly set-up home-built computer and got the following readings from my drives in mid-November. SSD 154 MB/s RAID1 87 RAID0 198 (software installs) RAID0 98 Swap drive Today, in January, I run HDTune (same version) and get these results, in MB/s: SSD 186 RAID1 98 RAID0 241 RAID0 98 (Swap drive) Here are more details that HDTune reports on the SSD drive: HD Tune: OCZ-VERTEX Benchmark Blockquote Transfer Rate Minimum : 135.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Maximum : 219.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Average : 185.7 MB/sec Access Time : 0.1 ms Burst Rate : 187.3 MB/sec CPU Usage : -1.0% To get to my question: Why are my hard drives improving in performance? Most of my logical drives are in some form of RAID, except for the SSD. Will this performance ever deteriorate? Note, none of my drives are a hybrid drive that uses some form of SSD to enhance the write/reads on actual platters.
