• Chameleon effect not working after update

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 since it came out and so far didn't have any problems with it. But after I updated (via Update Manager) it yesterday, after every reboot, the launcher color defaults to a blue dash, workspace and trash icon and the rest is black. If I set the wallpaper again manually, then it changes color as its supposed to (chameleon). Any idea why this is? Its really annoying to change your wallpaper every time you logon just to get the "normal" launcher. EDIT The chameleon effect works perfectly for notifications. Only the Launcher and Dash are not changing the color. Thanks.

• Update to 13.10 without GUI access

  After upgrading 13.04 with the latest patches, I'm getting some really weird problems -- namely, logging in at the GUI just dumps me back at the GUI login screen. I can, however, get command line access from Ctrl-Alt-F1, and remotely via SSH. Given that I was doing these updates to step to 13.10, I figure I might as well continue the process, and then deal with the fallout once I get there. However, how can this be achieved with only the command line, and no X available? The only method I've found thus far is to run 'update-manager', which does not appear to have a CLI mode (and will not start without access to X). What's the solution? Thanks!

• Dual monitor not working after an update

  I did a package manager update yesterday and it turns out that my dual monitor setup has stopped working. I have poor vision so I really need to connect to a much bigger screen, but since yesterday, when I connect the screen to my laptop, the screen does not automatically reset itself to the laptop display. Even after lots of trial and error with the display settings, I am getting different dispalys on the laptop and external screen and right now only the big screen is active while the laptop has blanked out. • update-grub is setting a wrong linux root partition

  Initially, Ubuntu was installed on another partition (sda5 or sda4). At some point I did manually move the root partition to sda2. Now, the problem is that whenever a new kernel is installed, the automatic regeneration of the menu.lst is using the OLD Linux partition. So I have to manually change in menu.lst the lines : root (hd0,5) into root (hd0,1) How can I configure update-grub to automatically generate menu.lst with the current Linux root partition? I assume that the (hd0,5) was written somewhere at installation, but I couldn't find it.

• Ubuntu crashed during the update to 12.04, not I can't recover my files, help please

  I'm pretty new to Linux and I've only installed Ubuntu as I couldn't afford to buy Windows, worked well and I liked it. But I chose to upgrade it to the newest version after a prompt. The update froze and the machine was unresponsive which forced me to hard reboot it. Now nothing seems to load and I've reached my wits end (mainly cos I'm lost in all the command lines). I've decided to try and recover my data from the hard drive, only two folders, by selecting the try Ubuntu option when I insert the OS CD into the machine. The problem I'm experiencing now is it won't let me copy my folders, I get a 'The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "folder_name".' Does anyone know how I can recover this data?

• 12.04 boot failure after update

  I am using 12.04 and updated using Synaptic Package Manager. Now, however, when I turn on the machine it fails to boot, just a blank screen. If I shut off the machine and start it again and press F12 (on my laptop) to get the boot menu and select the default for HD-0 it boots OK. I had previously used Update Center and had a similar problem, which I corrected by reverting to "Previous" setup. Are there any fixes for this problem or am I unique in this situation. • SCCM 2012 unable to update boot images with pxe enabled

  we are fighting an error in sccm 2012. When we attempt to distribute boot images (after selecting the pxe option) we receive an error that the pxe image cannot be expanded (distmgr log). Can you give us any direction on what to try or attempt in this scenario? We only have one dp in our environment at the moment, however we have found that by creating another dp on a different server we don’t have this problem. However we really need the primary site to be a dp. We have tried: Removing and reinstalling the dp Removing and reinstalling the WDS Reinstalled the OS ... ouch Reinstalled SQL We even attempted to manually mount these wims in the remote install folder, no luck...   Since 2-3 weeks, each time I update my fedora 11 box with yum, I get these messages. Error unpacking rpm package kde-filesystem-4-33.fc11.noarch warning: /etc/rpm/macros.kde4 saved as /etc/rpm/macros.kde4.rpmsave error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/doc/HTML/fr/docs/common: cpio: rename Failed: kde-filesystem.noarch 0:4-33.fc11 Everything else works fine. I tried to reinstall it. The re-installation was fine but I still get the messages when I yum update I didn't try to remove it with yum because it will remove more than 100 packages dues to dependencies. What else could I do ?

  hi i am looking for a recap of what i have done already to see if i missed anything. i had two cities connected by wan using a ipsec persistent tunnel between gateways. i had one DC (DOMAIN CONTROLLER) in each city that was a global catalog server (GC) they were set up to replicate and i had them configured under Sites and Servers with their own subnet etc... about 6 months ago the one city was removed and i was not able to gracefully remove, through dcpromo, the server that was there. it is no longer used and cannot be brought back. the company went from two sites down to single site. Problem is i had a whole bunch of kcc errors and replication bugs in the event viewer. i wanted to clean up my active directory and decided to use the ntdsutil metadata cleanup commands. i removed the server from the specifed site based on a procedure from petri website. I then removed the instances of the old DC and site from Sites and Servers. Then i went and cleaned up the DNS by removing Host A records, NS server name from both the local DNS forward lookup zone and the _msdcs i also removed the reverse lookup zone for the subnet that no longer exists. is there anything i missed? thanks in advance for any help. gd

I do not have Angry Birds on my system, but when I clicked the update button I got the following message. "You have updates available for other accounts. • Emails from web site sometimes blank or gibberish

  Our company has one web site with an online store based on osCommerce. The system sends emails for various reasons, such as password changes, order confirmations, etc., using PHP's mail() function. We occasionally have customers report that the email they received is either blank (email is plain text format) or gibberish (email is in HTML format). In the latter case it's really just HTML that's being displayed as raw text but of course the customers can't read it. In this case the first opening tag's <, and sometimes a few more characters, has gone missing. In an attempt to determine whether this was happening only for certain customers or email systems I configured the web site to send a CC of each message to a service account at my end. Those CC'd messages always arrive intact and display correctly in Outlook. For what it's worth, it seems to happen a little more frequently to Hotmail users but is certainly not limited to them. As the web site is on a shared (Debian) host there's precious little I can do about debugging things from that end, although if I made the right request I feel the hosting company staff would help me, even though they have limited resources to spend on such matters. Any suggestions on what else I might do to try and determine just why those emails are not being received correctly by some customers, yet a CC copy arrives just fine?

  Today I lost the ability to see my Windows Server 2008 R2 shares from any of my 3 Windows XP machines in my small office. The 5 Win7 machines haven't been affected (they are still able to browse/access the 2008 server), but none of my WinXP machines can access the 2008R2 server anymore. Yesterday (and for the previous year) everything was working fine. I do not have a domain setup. I can still access Win7 shares from WinXP clients. Browsing the server logs, I see that the following update was installed last night: > Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for > installation. • DNS Does Not Register at Off-site Locations

  First of all, let me give you the specifics of our setup: Windows Small Business Server 2008 Domain w/ all applicable updates on the DC The DC does DHCP for the main site The DC does DNS for all sites 3 sites including our headquarters where the DC is located All sites are connected through OpenVPN SSL tunnels terminated by an Untangle box at each site The 2 remote sites us the Untangle box as a DHCP server for their subnet, which assigns the DC as the primary DNS server Collection of Windows XP and Windows 7 workstations connected to the domain Here's the issue: All of the workstations at the main site register with the DNS server on the domain controller fine. As they grab an IP from the DHCP server, it updates the DNS server with the new host record. I have 2 systems (each at different remote sites) that fail to register with the DNS server. I've attempted the following troubleshooting steps: Confirmed the network adapter is using the DC as a DNS server Confirmed 2-way traffic is possible between DC and workstation Verified the "Register with DNS server" setting was checked in the adapter properties Attempted ipconfig /registerdns and received no errors For the time being, I have setup a DHCP reservation for these systems and manually created a host record. This seems to work fine, but I need a solution for any new systems that go out there.

  Guys, I need your help. Since last month my friend has lost his database on Dreamhost, he decided to move his wordpress based blog site (written in Chinese) to my server. He's using a wp-plugin called wp-db-backup to perform regular db backups. And the servers backgrounds are: Dreamhost: Linux 2.6.31.5-modsign-aufs2-grsec-2-opt mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.16, for pc-linux-gnu (i386) using readline 5.0 apache2 unknown version My Server: Linux li159-46 2.6.32.12-x86_64-linode12 mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.45, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 6.1 nginx 0.8.36 His site's encoding was UTF-8 in both wp-config and db. I imported his db backup file in UTF-8 by default, then I sync'd files using rsync from dreamhost, then I just changed the db address and nothing more. But when I take first look at the "new" site, it was full of unreadable characters, I met this problem before, I changed charset options in browser but none of them can make it displayed properly. Then I converted his db to GB18030, it works with only if browser set charset to GB18030 either GBK, but by default they recognize the charset as UTF-8. I tried to edit the headers but it doesn't work. What could I do now? Thx~~

  I'm using Puppet Dashboard as my ENC and I'm not sure how to reference or use class and group classifications from /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp. I have two groups defined in the dashboard: CentOS6 and SLES11. What should my site.pp look like if I want to include a certain list of modules in the CentOS6 group and a certain list of modules in the SLES11 group? I'm trying to do something like this: # /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp node basenode { include hosts include ssh::server include ssh::client include authentication include sudo include syslog include mail } node 'CentOS6' inherits basenode { include profile } node 'SLES11' inherits basenode { include usrmounts } I have OS-specific case statements within my modules, but there are some modules that will only be applied to a certain distro. So I suppose I have two questions: Is this the best way to apply modules/resources in an OS-specific manner? Or does the above make you want to vomit? Regardless of #1, I'm still curious as how to reference classes, groups, and nodes from Dashboard within my manifests. I've read the External Nodes doc, but I'm not seeing how they correspond to manifests. Thanks all.
