• Combining XSLT transforms

  Is there a way to combine two XSLT documents into a single XSLT document that does the same as transforming using the original two in sequence? i.e. Combining XSLTA and XSLTB into XSLTC such that XSLTB( XSLTA( xml )) == XSLTC( xml )? There's three reasons I'd like to be able to do this: Simplifies development; some operations need sequential transforms, and although I can generate a combined one by hand, it's a lot more difficult to maintain that two much simpler, separate transforms. Speed; one transform is in most cases hopefully faster than two. I'm currently working on a program that literally just transforms a data file in XML into an XHTML page capable of editing it using one XSLT, and a second XSLT that transforms the XHTML page back into the data file when it's saved. One test I hope to be able to do is to combine the two, and easily confirm that the 'combined' XSLT should leave the data unchanged.

• Pseudorandom Number Generation with Specific Non-Uniform Distributions

  Hello all, I'm writing a program that simulates various random walks (with differing distributions). At each timestep, I need randomly generated, two dimensional step distances and angles from the distribution of the random walk. I'm hoping someone can check my understanding of how to generate these random numbers. As I understand it I can use Inverse Transform Sampling as follows: If f(x) is the pdf of our random walk that has a non-uniform distribution, and y is a random number from a uniform distribution. Then if we let f(x) = y and solve to find x then we have a random number from the non-uniform distribution. Is this a feasible solution?

• MonoTouch- 'curated' bindings?

  I'm just converting a video player sample to MT and came to this part: self.view.layer.sublayerTransform = CATransform3DMakePerspective(1000); In Monotouch, I've started with: this.View.Layer.SublayerTransform(CATransform3D.... But no perspective option is available. There is a 'scale' and 'rotate' one - does this mean this functionality is unavailable in MT? Or that I need to start creating my own bindings even though this one has been processed by the binding creation tool Xamarin uses? If anyone could advise how I would apply that transform I'd appreciate it. Cheers

• Firefox "intelligently" and silently fixes incorrect file references in CSS and Scripts at runtime.

  Well this is a really weird issue, I really didn't find anything on this elsewhere so I thought I'd address it here. Say I have an "image.jpg" and accidentally reference it in the CSS like so: url(imag.jpg) Note the missing "e". Now for me, Firefox is so incredibly clever that it will still find the correct image, but NOT SPIT OUT A WARNING. So I assume that everything is ok. But later, when I test the page in any other browser, all of a sudden the image doesn't display (and rightly so). That's because Firefox thought it was a good idea to correct my error without telling me. This becomes more critical with scripts. Firefox will also auto-correct a typo in a reference. I just wasted a whole hour scratching my head and trying to debug an ajax function in Webkit - turns out, I just had a typo where I included the file. Why on earth does Firefox do this without telling, and where the heck can I turn this off? This has first occured somewhere around FF 3.0 and still persists in 3.6.3. /rant an thank fo any inpu ;)

• Child elements changing opacity with parent Image

  I have a <div> element which has a background image. On top of that I have some text that is hidden but when the user hovers over the <div> element that text will show and the <div> opacity will lower. My problem is when you hover over the div all elements inside that change opacity as well. I have looked through stackoverflow to see if anyone has the same problem but all i found were answers that had RGBA using background colors (not images). • [XNA] Forming bounding box only around visible sprites

  Hi, this site has been really amazing for helping me with game development however I'm unable to find an answer for the following question (nor am I able to solve it on my own). I am trying to do rectangle collision in my game. My idea is to 1) get the original collision bounding rectangle 2) Transform the texture (pos/rot/scale) 3) Factor changes of item into a matrix and then use this matrix to change the original collision bounds of the item. However, my textures contain a lot of transparency, transparency that affect the overall height/width of the texture (I do this to maintain power of two dimensions).   Say I want to create an array of pixel values to pass into the createBitmap method described here. I have three int values r, g, b in the range 0 - 0xff. How do I transform those into a opaque pixel p? Does the alpha channel go in the high byte or the low byte? I googled up the documentation but it only states that: Each pixel is stored on 4 bytes. Each channel (RGB and alpha for translucency) is stored with 8 bits of precision (256 possible values.) This configuration is very flexible and offers the best quality. But when I try to instantiate the prefab in the scene it doesn't appear to have the components attached? • Affine Transforms with Demo App

  I have a demo app here https://github.com/rdetert/image-transform-test After importing an image, you can pinch, zoom, rotate the image. What I want to do is save out a 640x480 image (landscape mode) that looks identical to the live preview. So if there are 100px bars of empty space on the sides, I need the same empty bars in the final output (scaled appropriately). This is proving to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I can't quite get it to come out right after days of working on it. The magic method that generates the final image is called -(void)generateFinalImage Good luck! ;)

  Is this technology still popular? I want to make a website which automatically transforms XSLT files. It should work like this: When a user accesses the site, a single handler would accept his request and then find a suitable XML for it (according to the URL requested) and transform it using its attached XSL file. I want to do this in order to make it easy to update the site using plain XML files (instead of using a full-fledged & expensive CMS system).   I got a script component which does Transformation / DataType conversions / Creating some calculated columns. All the transform validations / datatype conversion methods and for new column generation is put into custom .dll. As this script component would be same for all other tables, only thing is to define input / ouput columns and apply validation methods on required columns. This all works fine. On production server where do I need to deploy my .dll. Would just putting it into GAC will be enough or need to do something else. Regards

  Windows 7 (and probably Windows Vista) display localized folder names using the LocalizedResourceName entry in the desktop.ini file. For my Documents folder, this looks like [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21770 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112 IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll IconIndex=-235 (see this question) This way the explorer displays the path "C:\Users\Username\Documents" as "C:\Benutzer\Username\Dokumente" on a german Windows. I wonder, if there's any build-in shell function to automatically get this localized name or, even better, transform a whole path into its localized form (best would be anything in .NET)? This is even more interesting as the LocalizedResourceName entry is only documented for Windows CE (see here). Thanks Martin

• What's the most efficient way to manage large datasets with Javascript/jQuery in IE?

  I have a search that returns JSON, which I then transform into a HTML table in Javascript. It repeatedly calls the jQuery.append() method, once for each row. I have a modern machine, and the Firefox response time is acceptable. But in IE 8 it is unbearably slow. I decided to move the transformation from data to HTML into the server-side PHP, changing the return type from JSON to HTML. Now, rather than calling the jQuery.append() time repeatedly, I call the jQuery.html() method once with the entire table. I noticed Firefox got faster, but IE got slower. These results are anecdotal and I have not done any benchmarking, but the IE performance is very disappointing. Is there something I can do to speed up the manipulation of large amounts of data in IE or is it simply a bad idea to process very much data at once with AJAX/Javascript?

• How to correctly migrate urls from custom asp.net solution to Wordpress?

  I have a web site built using asp.net with ugly URLs like /DisplayContent.aspx?id=789564. I know how to migrate the database, but the Wordpress urls will be (naturally) different. Can I simply write some mapping or do I have to include a rewrite rule for each subpage (300 pages) in .htaccess? Should I provide a rewrite rule for each existing page that would transform a full old url to the known new url, like for example: /DisplayContent.aspx?id=789798 -> /2010-5-10/Title-Of-The-Post Even if I manage to migrate the URLs, the structure of the HTML for the new content will naturally be different. How does this affect SEO? Should I run asp.net and wordpress side by side and issue the redirects from the asp.net application? What is the most efficient solution to this kind of migration of URLs without doing PHP programming?

  Currently I'm creating an web based (= JavaScript) application thata is using a lot of "points" (= small, fixed size vectors). There are basically two obvious ways of representing them: var pointA = [ xValue, yValue ]; and var pointB = { x: xValue, y: yValue }; So translating my point a bit would look like: var pointAtrans = [ pointA[0] + 3, pointA[1] + 4 ]; var pointBtrans = { x: pointB.x + 3, pointB.y + 4 }; Both are easy to handle from a programmer point of view (the object variant is a bit more readable, especially as I'm mostly dealing with 2D data, seldom with 3D and hardly with 4D - but never more. It'll allways fit into x,y,z and w) But my question is now: What is the most efficient way from the language perspective - theoretically and in real implementations? What are the memory requirements? What are the setup costs of an array vs. an object? ... My target browsers are FireFox and the Webkit based ones (Chromium, Safari), but it wouldn't hurt to have a great (= fast) experience under IE and Opera as well...
