• display of umlauts in firefox

  I was doing some web searching and found some strange things involving umlauts. For example if you do a google or yahoo search for the word "nther" you are likely to find things like G&#xfc;nther which I take to be Gunther with an umlaut over the u. Now my question is what if anything can I do to cause these characters to be properly displayed by Firefox under windows XP? An amazing thing is that I had to introduce spaces in the G & # etc string otherwise it was properly displayed here as u with umlaut!

  We are using drag & drop utility between one source and multiple targets. We have a restriction that one of the target can only have one child element while the other ones can have multiple items. • Why has Javascript been (mostly) only a browser-side technology for more than 10 years?

  Recently there is a lot of projects that pushes Javascript into other directions: as a general purpose scripting language (GLUEScript, Rhino), as an extension language (QTScript, Adobe Reader, OO Macros), Widgets (Yahoo Widgets, MS Gadgets, Dashboard), and even server-side JS & web frameworks (CommonJS, Helma, Phobos, V8cgi), which seems obvious since it is already a language widely used for web development. But wait, everything is so new and nothing is really mature. However JS is around for almost 15 years, being as powerfull as any other scripting languages, being standardised by the ECMA, and being a mandatory technology for web development. Why did it take so much time to gain acceptance into other domains than web browsers?

  I'm working on porting some PHP code to C, that contacts a web API. The issue I've come across is that the PHP code uses the function openssl_seal(), but I can't seem to find any way to do the same thing in C or even via openssl in a call to system(). From the PHP manual on openssl_seal(): int openssl_seal ( string $data , string &$sealed_data , array &$env_keys , array $pub_key_ids ) openssl_seal() seals (encrypts) data by using RC4 with a randomly generated secret key. The key is encrypted with each of the public keys associated with the identifiers in pub_key_ids and each encrypted key is returned in env_keys . This means that one can send sealed data to multiple recipients (provided one has obtained their public keys). Each recipient must receive both the sealed data and the envelope key that was encrypted with the recipient's public key. What would be the best way to implement this? I'd really prefer not to call out to a PHP script every time, for obvious reasons.

  My current App is written in Python on GAE which can do Contacts management, Genealogy, Social Networking, Photo sharing, Telecom Integration (SMS, iVRS, URL Billing), CRON and performs business logic operations for our Mobile Apps. Current Architecture indlues python, django, jquery, memcache and few telecom APIs. Now, It feels that an SOA Architecture on GAE using Java would be really ideal and scalable for this kind of App where we want to build new features like widgets that users can turn on or off and third party developers can also develop and deploy features. Please correct me or improve the following design decision: UI (Current plan is GWT) Sessions, Security and ACL (Spring MVC 2.x) Reusable Business Logic components (?) Implementation of Web Services (?) Your advice would really help.

  I am new to javascript and I just wanted to convert a string into a format that a person like me can read. Here is an example of what I am trying to do... string2size(string){ //some awesome coding I have no clue how to make return awesomeAnswer } now the return should give me something like 56 bytes or 12kb or 1mb depending how much the string is. so if the string is... string = "there was an old woman who lived in a shoe"; then string2size(string) should return something like 3kb. Now I know there has been a utf8 talk and I wouldn't object to and addition of that to the function. I keep seeing that yahoo/ google/ MS offer this data, yet I cant find HOWTO doc (or similar) on getting the data. Reuters is an option - ~$300/month puts it out of my range. • PHPMailer, fsockopen(), possible Apache issue?

  I'm using PHPMailer to send out site contacts. In development, the script works perfectly with the GMail service over smtp. However, in production, inside the client's DMZ, it appears unable to connect to the SMTP service they have there. I have connected to the same service using telnet to port 25, so I know for sure it exists and is available to the server. Are there any circumstances where php might not be able to open a socket connection (fsockopen)...? The php extension openssl is loaded and ok. The error is "Unable to connect to SMTP service". Thanks!

• deselectRowAtIndexPath on an ABPeoplePickerNavigationController

  I'm showing an ABPeoplePickerNavigationController as a tab in my app. The user clicks a name, then email address, then I do something with the email address. Afterwards, I'd like for the person and property that they selected to fade out (not be highlighted). In a normal table, I'd call deselectRowAtIndexPath. But with the ABPeoplePickerNavCont I don't seem to have access to it's table, nor do I know what indexPath is selected, nor is there an api for deselecting the row. On most apps, ABPeoplePickerNavCont is used modally so it doesn't matter that the row is still highlighted 'cause the whole thing gets dismissed. But in my app it does not get dismissed (just like the contacts tab in the Phone app). Any ideas?

  I want to be able to search a table quite quickly using the Entity Framework, say if I have a Contacts table, a JobsToDo table and a matrix table linking the two tables e.g Contacts_JobsToDo_Mtx and I specify two foreign keys in the Contacts_JobsToDo_Mtx table, if I wanted to search this Mtx table, do I need to specify an index on the two foreign keys? Or by the fact that they are two foreign keys are they considered indexed on them anyway? Will the Entity Framework be able to search through the Mtx table quickly without having to specfiy an index on both keys? Thanks!

  I tried to search an answer for this but couldn't find one. My iPhone application needs to access the Photo associated with the contact in the phonebook. However, it also needs to make sure that every time application is launched, it verifies that the photo is the same.
