• Document-oriented vs Column-oriented database fit

  I have a data-intensive application that desperately needs a database make-over. The general data model: There are records with RIDs, grouped together by group IDs (GID). The records have arbitrary data fields, (maybe 5-15) with a few of them mandatory and the rest optional, and thus sparse. The general use model: There are LOTS and LOTS of Writes. Millions to Billions of records are stored. Very often, they are associated with new GIDs, but sometimes, they are associated with existing GIDs. There aren't as many reads, but when they happen, they need to be pretty fast or at least constant speed regardless of the database size. And when the reads happen, it will need to retrieve all the records/RIDs with a certain GID. I don't have a need to search by the record field values. Primarily, I will need to query by the GID and maybe RID. What database implementation should I use? I did some initial research between document-oriented and column-oriented databases and it seems the document-oriented ones are a good fit, model-wise. I could store all the records together under the same document key using the GID. But I don't really have any use for their ability to search the document contents itself. I like the simplicity and scalability of column-oriented databases like Cassandra, but how should I model my data in this paradigm for optimal performance? Should my key be the GID and should I create a column for each record/RID? (there maybe thousands or hundreds of thousands of records in a group/GID). Or should my key be the RID and ensure each row has a column for the GID value? What results in faster writes and reads under this model?

• TechEd 2012: Office, SharePoint And More Office

  I haven’t spent any time looking at Office 365 up to this point.  I met Donovan Follette on the flight down from Chicago.  I also got to spend some time discussing the product offerings with him at the TechExpo and that sealed my decision to attend this session. The main actor of his presentation is the BCS – Business Connectivity Services. He explained that while this feature has existed in on-site SharePoint it is a valuable new addition to Office 365 SharePoint Online.  If you aren’t familiar with the BCS, it allows you to leverage non-SharePoint enterprise data source from SharePoint.  The greatest benefactor is the end users who can leverage the data using a variety of Office products and more.  The one thing I haven’t shaken my skepticism of is the use of SharePoint Designer which Donovan used to create a WCF service.  It is mostly my tendency to try to create solutions that can be managed through the whole application life cycle.  It the past migrating through test environments has been near impossible with anything other than content created by SharePiont Designer. There is a lot of end user power here.  The biggest consideration I think you need to examine when reaching from you enterprise LOB data stores out to an online service and back is that you are going to take a performance hit.  This means that you have to be very aware of how you configure these integrated self serve solutions.  As a rule make sure you are using the right tool for the right situation. • Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, now available for download

  Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for general download for almost a week now.  The Beta of SP1 came couple of months back and it did a lot of performance enhancements, added support for HTML5 tags and few other stuff related to web development.  Now, the final release of SP1 is available.  The good part is that, if you had installed the SP1 beta, you don’t have to remove the Beta and start all over again.  You can apply the final release on top of the Beta and it works like a charm. So, in simplified terms, what is new in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Before I start listing it down, I was checking if there was an MSDN article available on this and found http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg442059.aspx  While it reads (Beta), the same holds good for the release candidate as well.  Unlike VS 2008 SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (which came together), this release doesn’t add any new project templates/item templates. However, there are lot of enhancements related to Web Deployment, Debugging and Unit Testing for .NET 3.5 applications. So, how does one find if you are running the correct version of SP1 final release.   I sadly could not make it to EclipseCon last year. It was sad for so many reasons, not the least being that Sweden during that part of the year is cold and dark. ;) This year, however, I will be contributing two talks: ---> HotRockit – What to Expect from Oracle’s Converged JVM Oracle is converging the HotSpot and JRockit JVMs to produce a "best of breed JVM". Internally the project is sometimes referred to as the HotRockit project. There is already a large influx of ideas and solutions provided by the JRockit JVM into the Open JDK. Examples of improvements include: Better monitoring and profiling Improved performance Better ergonomics This talk will discuss what to expect from the converged JVM over the next two years, and how this will benefit the Eclipse community. Production-time Problem Solving in Eclipse This session will look at some common problems and pitfalls in Java applications. • Inheritance versus Composition in a business application

  I have a training management and tracking system, with a high level structure as follows: We have a Role1, e.g. Manager, Shift-boss, miner, etc. and a Candidate, training for that Role. The role has a list of courses and their subjects the candidate needs to complete to qualify for the role. Candidate has a TrainingHistory attribute, containing the courses and subjects they have completed, their results, and the date completed. Now I see it as a TrainingHistoryCourse is-a Course, extended to add DateCompleted etc. but something is nagging at me to rather use something like a TrainingHistoryRecord that has-a Course. How can I further analyse this to determine which pattern to use? Then, a Role has a list of RoleTask definitions that the Candidate must be observed practising, and a Candidate has a history of RoleTaskObservation objects recording their performance at these tasks. This is very similar to the course/subject requirement and history pattern for the candidate, except for one less hierarchical level, but, a RoleTaskObservation clearly does not have an is-a relationship with RoleTask, unless I block my nose and rather use ObservedRoleTask. I would prefer to use the same pattern for both subject/course and task/observation structures, but I think that would force me to adopt a composition pattern for TrainingHistoryCourse. What is the wisdom here? Always inherit where possible and validated by a solid is-a association, or always favour composition wherever possible? 1 Client specified this to be called JobTitle, but he isn't writing the app, and a JobTitle is only one attribute of a Role. Authorization roles are handled by the DevExpress framework and its customization hooks, so there would be very little little confusion between a business Role in my domain objects and an authorization role in lower level, framework code.

• Lucene and .NET Part I

  I’ve playing around with Lucene.NET and trying to get a feeling of what was required to develop and implement a full business application using it. As you would imagine, many things are required for you to implement a robust solution for indexing content and searching it afterwards. Lucene is a great and robust solution for indexing content. It offers fast and performance enhanced search engine library available in Java and .NET. You will want to use this library in many particular scenarios: In Windows Azure, to support Full Text Search (a functionality not currently supported by SQL Azure) When storing files outside or not managed by your database (like in large document storage solutions that uses File System) When Full Text Search is not really what you need Lucene is more than a Full Text Search solution. It has several analyzers that let you process and search content in different ways (decomposing sentences, deriving words, removing articles, etc.). When deciding to implement indexing using Lucene, you will need to take into account the following: How content is to be indexed by Lucene and when. Using a service that runs after a specific interval Immediately when content changes When content is to available for searching / Availability of indexed content (as in real time content search) Immediately when content changes = near real time searching After a few minutes.. Ease of maintainability and development Some Technical Concerns.. When indexing content, indexes are locked for writing operations by the Index Writer. This means that Lucene is best designed to index content using single writer approach. When searching, Index Readers take a snapshot of indexes. This has the following implications: Setting up an index reader is a costly task. Your are not supposed to create one for each query or search. A good practice is to create readers and reuse them for several searches. The latter means that even when the content gets updated, you wont be able to see the changes. You will need to recycle the reader. In the second part of this post we will review some alternatives and design considerations.

• Fibonacci numbers in F#

  As you may have gathered from some of my previous posts, I've been spending some quality time at Project Euler.  Normally I do my solutions in C#, but since I have also started learning F#, it only made sense to switch over to F# to get my math coding fix. This week's post is just a small snippet - spefically, a simple function to return a fibonacci number given it's place in the sequence.  One popular example uses recursion: let rec fib n = if n < 2 then 1 else fib (n-2) + fib(n-1) While this is certainly elegant, the recursion is absolutely brutal on performance.  So I decided to spend a little time, and find an option that achieved the same functionality, but used a recursive function.  And since this is F#, I wanted to make sure I did it without the use of any mutable variables. Here's the solution I came up with: let rec fib n1 n2 c =    if c = 1 then        n2    else        fib n2 (n1+n2) (c-1);;let GetFib num =    (fib 1 1 num);;printfn "%A" (GetFib 1000);; Essentially, this function works through the sequence moving forward, passing the two most recent numbers and a counter to the recursive calls until it has achieved the desired number of iterations.  At that point, it returns the latest fibonacci number. Enjoy!

So I was thinking, would it be possible to let non-sysadmin users query DMVs on a SQL server but stop them querying this I/O intensive DMV ? Yes it is, here’s how… 1. Create a new login for test purposes, with permissions to access AdventureWorks database only … CREATE LOGIN [test] WITH PASSWORD='xxxx', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[AdventureWorks] GO USE [AdventureWorks] GO CREATE USER [test] FOR LOGIN [test] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo] GO 2.login as user test and issue command SELECT  * FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats(DB_ID('AdventureWorks'),NULL,NULL,NULL,'DETAILED') gets error :-  Msg 297, Level 16, State 12, Line 1 The user does not have permission to perform this action. 3.As a sysadmin, issue command :- USE AdventureWorks GRANT VIEW DATABASE STATE TO [test] or GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE TO [test] if all databases can be queried via DMV. 4. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 (UEK R3) is Oracle's third major supported release of its heavily tested and optimized Linux kernel for Oracle Linux 6 on the x86_64 architecture. UEK R3 is based on mainline Linux version 3.8.13. Some notable highlights of this release include: Inclusion of DTrace for Linux into the kernel (no longer a separate kernel image).   Historically, data was generated from predictable sources, stored in storage systems and accessed for further processing. This data was correlated, filtered and analyzed to derive insights and/or drive well constructed processes. There was little ambiguity in the kinds of data, the sources it would originate from and the routes that it would follow. Internet of Things (IoT) creates many opportunities to extract value from data that result in significant improvements across industries such as Automotive, Industrial Manufacturing, Smart Utilities, Oil and Gas, High Tech and Professional Services, etc. This demo showcases how the health of remotely deployed machinery can be monitored to illustrate how data coming from devices can be analyzed in real-time, integrated with back-end systems and visualized to initiate action as may be necessary. Use-case: Remote Service and Maintenance Critical machinery once deployed on the field, is expected to work with minimal failures, while delivering high performance and reliability. In typical remote monitoring and industrial automation scenarios, although many physical objects from machinery to equipment may already be “smart and connected,” they are typically operated in a standalone fashion and not integrated into existing business processes. IoT adds an interesting dynamic to remote monitoring in industrial automation solutions in that it allows equipment to be monitored, upgraded, maintained and serviced in ways not possible before.   With the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa almost a week underway, the soccer fans all around the World are talking about at least 2 things. That typical vuvuzela sound and the new Jabulani ball, saying it moves unpredictably, is difficult to handle and somehow the altitude of the World Cup stadiums also seem to be a contributing factor.(Picture taken from http://www.flickr.com/photos/warrenski/4143923059/ under a Creative Commons license)Although the FIFA states that it hasn't received any official complaints, the end users don't seem to be very happy with this new ball. This brings me to a comparison with IT management and testing. When you're in a situation where you're introducing a new product, in IT terms, introducing a new application, you would like to test all possible scenarios that your end users could be using and experiencing. However, that's a very time and resource intensive process to do for every application change or update.  It's like getting ready for the big game but you have no game plan.That's why a new approach has been developed. One that's based on the 80/20 rule. Testing 80% of the application will cost about 20% of the efforts. The remaining 20% of your application will not be tested before deployment, but monitored with a real user monitoring solution immediately after deployment. These tools track all user experiences, including error messages and the performance and availability metrics from an end user perspective.
