  • I (stupidly) converted a TrueCrypt encrypted disk to GPT in Disk Management: now TrueCrypt won't mount it

    Backstory: After moving a Macrium Reflect disk image from my TrueCrypt external drive (with whole disk encryption) onto a unencrypted drive and using Windows PE with Macrium Reflect to restore my internal disk to the recovery image on the external unencrypted drive, my Windows 8 failed to boot. I then went back and also recovered the System Partition (looking now, it is currently EFI), but I still couldn't boot into my backup.. I was in a hurry to get online for something so I just did a clean install of Windows 8, without the backup.. After I installed Windows 8, I went into Disk Management out of curiosity to see if there were other partitions with Windows 8 that Macruim might have missed, and there is (by default) a Recovery Partition of 100MB. My memory of this is hazy, as I was trying to get up and running for an exam at 4 AM: Something in Disk Management prompted me to convert my encrypted external drive to GPT.. I have no idea why I did this, but I went ahead and allowed it to convert my TrueCrypt drive to GPT. Now, I can't mount the drive in TrueCrypt.. Disk Management sees it as Disk 1, Basic, and Unallocated. I tried converting it back to MBR with Disk Management, but no dice with TrueCrypt :( If I try to mount the disk in TrueCrypt I get the message: Incorrect password or not a TrueCrypt volume I should never have messed with a Truecrypt drive in Disk Management, but I did. I have important college work in that drive, and fear I have lost it forever. PLEASE HELP

    I have several power point presentations as pdfs. I would like to read them on the original kindle in landscape format. When I read the original on the kindle then a single slide won't fit on the kindles display. I thought the easiest way to convert the pdf was to repring it with a pdf printer. However I don't know the paper size to use. I already tried using Calibre as suggested by this question. However the output is not usable because of formatting issues. So what paper size should I use for the pdf printer to reprint them in landscape format or are there any other tools I could use for that task?

  • How to train users converting from PC to Mac/Apple at a small non profit?

    Background: I am part of a team that provides volunteer tech support to a local non profit. We are in the position to obtain a grant to update almost all of our computers (many of them 5 to 7 year old machines running XP), provide laptops for users that need them, etc. We are considering switching our users from PC (WinXP) to Macs. The technical aspects of switching will not be an issue for the team. We are in the process of planning data conversions, machine setup, server changes, etc regardless of whether we switch to Macs or much newer PCs. About 1/4 of the staff uses or has access to a Mac at home, these users already understand the basics of using the equipment. We have another set of (generally younger) users that are technically savvy and while slightly inconvenienced and slowed for a few days should be able to switch over quickly. Finally, several members of the staff are older and have many issues using there computers today. We think in the long run switching to Macs may provide a better user experience, fewer IT headaches, and more effective use of computers. The questions we have is what resources and training (webpages, Books, online training materials or online courses) do you recommend that we provide to users to enable the switchover to happen smoothly. Especially, with a focus on providing different levels of training and support to users with different skill levels. If you have done this in your own organization, what steps were successful, what areas were less successful?

  • How can I reorder parts of a video file

    I have download a mkv movie file which gave me 3 files suffixed .001, .002, and .003. When i join them together with different tools like winrar, 7zip, hjsplit, concatenated file shows only last 40 min/1.22 hrs of the total length of the movie. If I play all the (.001, .002, .003) parts with vlc player, I can see that .003 is the first part of the video and .001 is the last part. Can anyone tell me how can join this parts of movie with correct position or how I can convert .003 file into .001 file.

  • Time of splitting and encoding video with ffmpeg increases exponentially

    I'm trying to split video by subtitles and encode into .mp4(h.264/aac) using ffmpeg, but it takes so much time! First pieces of video are splited and encoded really fast, but for each iteration time increases, and so 40 min video takes all night or more. Small 3 min video takes max 10 mins. cmd for splitting and encoding: ffmpeg -i filename.avi -ss 00:00:0(time of sub start) -t 0:0:3(time of sub duration) -acodec libfaac -vcodec libx264 -bf 0 -f mp4 filename.mp4 ffmpeg version N-34849-g07c7ffc (last, i think) How I can make it faster? Are there, maybe, some magic arguments for ffmpeg or some hacks?

I have tried fruity loops, FruityLoops I think is great for people who have some experience with mixing music. What I'm looking for is software for people who don't have experience with mixing. The pieces of music I am planning to join are different from each other, they have different Tempo and Beat.     Windows XP (and previous versions) had a Record Volume Control panel that could be used to select between music inputs (Stereo Mix, Wav, etc) and a microphone. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent capability in Windows 7 . Is there a third party application that provides this functionality? Note: the Windows XP Record Volume Control was accessed by doubleclicking the Speaker icon in the system try which displayed the (Listen) Volume Control. In the menu there was a "properties" which gave you the option of displaying the RECORD Volume Control instead. I used this capabiliy in Win XP to select the required inputs for an Internet Radio Station and now with Win 7, I can't do it any longer

    i'm having a serious problem with my laptop (Toshiba satellite l40). Two days ago i just turned it off by holding the power button and the next day it didn't start at all. There is a blue screen with an error : UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME, i searched all over the net for a solution, did almost everything like using the windows 7 install disk and trying to repair with the command prompt (check c: /r, bootfix etc.) it runs the check saying there are no errors and when i restart the blue screen again.   • About to smash my keyboard!! Ubuntu 13.1 issues with AMD driver & Audio

    Let me preface with saying that this is my 2nd day on Linux. I really want to make it work but these issues are driving me up the wall! I've done exhaustive google searches but have not been able to figure anything out. I am on Ubuntu 13.10, my graphics card is AMD Radeon HD4200. My sound card is a realtek HDMI. I've tried downloading and installing both drivers but nothing works. Graphics card: When I run the .run file (from http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64.zip) I get an error. I check the fglrx-install log and it says this: Check if system has the tools required for installation. fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.11.0-12-generic/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system. One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver. Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools. Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended. Audio: Since my first install I've had no audio. I've tried everything outlined in this site: http://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/ to no avail. I've download the linux drivers from Realtek HDMI audio but have had no luck. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

  • Why are my videos playing speeded up with no audio, but work fine if I log in as a guest?

    Since the start of this week I have been experiencing a glitch in the multimedia on my Samsung R518 laptop. I have 2 problems: Videos in every player are speeded up around 2 or 4 times (including youtube.com (both HTML5 and flash variants), any other video on the web and videos on my laptop played by Totem Media Player), exception is VLC player, but 2nd problem does concern even that. There is no sound - simple as that (with or without headphones plugged in). These all problems are now, and has not seen before, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 after it was possible, and from start I didn't have anything from this - it just started in this week. I haven't even putted new software in. I have more or less solved the question (kind of) - I just logged in as a guest - and it all works, but when I make a new user - it does not. Please help me.     I have an application that will record and play audio files. Some of the audio files are downloaded using simple standard http downloads using httpclient. It worked like a charm for a long time. Now all of a sudden I cannot play the files I download. It fails with this stack. I store the files on the SDCard and I experience the problem both on a handset and a USB connected device. I have checked that the downloaded file is cool on the server, and I can play it without any issues.
