  • "Dogfooding" VS 2010 and .NET 4

As we get ready for the launch of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4, I find myself looking back at the project to think about some of the critical factors that lead to our success.    One of the things that stands out clearly for me is our practice of dogfooding the various pieces of Visual Studio throughout the product cycle.  Here at Microsoft, we use the term dogfooding to refer to the internal use of a pre-release product in our daily work - after all, until our product...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? Nearly everyone starts learning anything new by beginning with something simple and adding incremental knowledge. One of the biggest challenges with Windows Azure and SQL Azure is that the simple beginning seems a bit more elusive. The "Hello World" application in the new world of cloud computing, while not overly complex in concept, requires a good measure of preparation and configuration. The following content is designed to aid you in getting started with Windows Azure and SQL Azure in the spirit...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? My latest book, the Whats new in ASP.NET MVC 2 Wrox Blox, is now available for purchase from the Wrox store at the cost of US $6.99. For those who are not familiar with them, Wrox Blox are short and concise ebooks that cover very specific topics. • Access Denied

Surely, now that PowerPivot has led the way, it is time for Microsoft to offer a new RAD package for database application development; namely an Excel-based front end for SQL Server Express. • ASP.NET Performance Framework

At the start of the year, I finished a 5 part series on ASP.NET performance - focusing on largely generic ways to improve website performance rather than specific ASP.NET performance tricks. The series focused on a number of topics, including merging and shrinking files, using modules to remove unecessary headers and setting caching headers, enabling cache busting and automatically generating cache busted referneces in css, as well as an introduction to nginx. Yesterday I managed to put a number...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • SPAMMED Architecture Framework (SAF)

I am working on moving my blog to wordpress and as part of the effort I am cleaning up and rearranging some of my older posts. Since my readership has increased substantially compared with the time I started blogging I think some of them are worth republishing. I think that the series on SPAMMED, my software architecture meta-framework falls under the category. Overview There is very little guidance on how one can go about designing/developing an architecture for a software project. Reader new to my blog might have wondered why blog lives in a .NZ domain: to make a long story short is because when I started my blog I was soo excited about my relocation to New Zealand that I registered a .NZ domain. Then I came back to Italy, and started to work in Milano. Last autumn I had to chance to go back to New Zealand again, but at the same time the offer to work for an European Institution arrived. And then my .net.nz domain didn't make sense any more. And because it seems like I've...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? I had forgotten that you can use SQL Server Modeling’s awesome Quadrant tool only with SQL Server 2008, not earlier versions of SQL Server. • Using XNA libraries in your Silverlight Windows Phone 7 applications

I recently got an inquiry to my Microsoft Translator sample on if this would work with the Silverlight in the Windows Phone 7 SDK. I finished all the .NET 4.0 security model changes. If you build from source, you can now (optionally) build on .NET 4.0 and get native .NET 4.0 assemblies that use the new .NET 4.0 security model (and also experimental class gc support). The .NET 2.0 binaries also work on .NET 4.0. This is probably the final development snapshot before the first 0.44 release candidate and it has been tested more than a typical development snapshot. • HTML5 apps

Right now nobody’s interested in a mobile solution that does not contain the words “iPhone” and “app” and that is not submitted to a closed environment where it competes with approximately 2,437 similar mobile solutions.Compared to the current crop of mobile clients and developers, lemmings marching off a cliff follow a solid, sensible strategy.
