  • Server 2008 unresponsive after SP2 install.

    - by Dan
I have a dev server that has an exact image of a production web server. The prod server only has SP1 installed on it. When I first fired up the dev box, the first thing I did was install SP2, and let it be. Almost every morning when I came in, the server was unusable. It would respond to ping, but RDP and the web site running on it were down. On the screen the screen saver was bouncing around, so it wasn't hard locked. But it was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse. So now I have to hard shut it down, but when it comes back up, the only thing in the event viewer is the unexpected shutdown, nothing else. I've since taken a fresh image of my prod box and put it on the dev server, and not installed SP2, and the dev box is humming along perfectly. I should also note that this is Server2k8 Web, 64bit Has anyone else seen anything like this?

  • Automatically distinguish difference between multiple HDDs in linux?

    - by Jakobud
I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10. I have two external USB HDDs. I use them each for different backup reasons. So certain data gets stored on one HDD, and different information gets stored on the other HDD. I want to make a script that can look at the external HDD can determine which HDD it is, so that it can copy the proper information to it. Is there a way for Linux to determine this? Like if I see one HDD as /dev/sdc1, then unplug it and plug in the other HDD, should Linux see it as /dev/sdd1 or will it be /dev/sdc1? I'm a bit of a Linux newb and I don't quite understand how it determines the /dev/sdxx values that it assigns to drives.

  • Any way to recover ext4 filesystems from a deleted LVM logical volume?

    - by Vegar Nilsen
The other day I had a proper brain fart moment while expanding a disk on a Linux guest under Vmware. I stretched the Vmware disk file to the desired size and then I did what I usually do on Linux guests without LVM: I deleted the LVM partition and recreated it, starting in the same spot as the old one, but extended to the new size of the disk. (Which will be followed by fsck and resize2fs.) And then I realized that LVM doesn't behave the same way as ext2/3/4 on raw partitions... After restoring the Linux guest from the most recent backup (taken only five hours earlier, luckily) I'm now curious on how I could have recovered from the following scenario. It's after all virtually guaranteed that I'll be a dumb ass in the future as well. Virtual Linux guest with one disk, partitioned into one /boot (primary) partition (/dev/sda1) of 256MB, and the rest in a logical, extended partition (/dev/sda5). /dev/sda5 is then setup as a physical volume with pvcreate, and one volume group (vgroup00) created on top of it with the usual vgcreate command. vgroup00 is then split into two logical volumes root and swap, which are used for / and swap, logically. / is an ext4 file system. Since I had backups of the broken guest I was able to recreate the volume group with vgcfgrestore from the backup LVM setup found under /etc/lvm/backup, with the same UUID for the physical volume and all that. After running this I had two logical volumes with the same size as earlier, with 4GB free space where I had stretched the disk. However, when I tried to run "fsck /dev/mapper/vgroup00-root" it complained about a broken superblock. I tried to locate backup superblocks by running "mke2fs -n /dev/mapper/vgroup00-root" but none of those worked either. Then I tried to run TestDisk but when I asked it to find superblocks it only gave an error about not being able to open the file system due to a broken file system. So, with the default allocation policy for LVM2 in Ubuntu Server 10.04 64-bit, is it possible that the logical volumes are allocated from the end of the volume group? That would definitely explain why the restored logical volumes didn't contain the expected data. Could I have recovered by recreating /dev/sda5 with exactly the same size and disk position as earlier? Are there any other tools I could have used to find and recover the file system? (And clearly, the question is not whether or not I should have done this in a different way from the start, I know that. This is a question about what to do when shit has already hit the fan.)

  • Can't mount home after trying to resize (bad geometry: block count exceeds size of device).

    - by Lynn
This is on a fresh computer (super computer actually). It got to me with 15T on the home mount and 50G on the root. I tried allocating 7T to root and resizing (since I'm putting a local yum repo on this machine as it has no internet access nor will it ever). I tried following the instructions here: Centos 6.3 disk space allocation but something went wrong and the home won't mount again. Instead I get from dmesg | tail: EXT4-fs (dm-2): bad geometry: block count 4294967295 exceeds size of device (1342177280 blocks) df -h nets this output: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root 7.0T 3.6G 6.6T 1% / tmpfs 190G 216K 190G 1% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 485M 38M 422M 9% /boot I didn't have any files on /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_home. Will simply running mke2fs fix it to be mountable? What sort of options should I run it with. I've never resized volumes before or used mke2fs. I don't want to make this mess worse.

  • Missing hvc0 in Ubuntu Lucid Xen DomU

    - by Joril
I've just installed an Ubuntu Lucid 64bit image (from Stacklet) as a Xen DomU, running under Xen 3.2.1 on Centos 5.2 64bit. Everything is working fine, except my logs are flooded with: /dev/hvc0: No such file or directory I tried creating the device with mknod /dev/hvc0 c 229 0 but the message just changes to: /dev/hvc0: cannot open as standard input: No such device or address Any hint on what I could try? :(

  • Connecting to a computer using Remote Desktop does not work first time

    - by dev
Hi all, I'm having a weird sort of problem with Remote desktop and that too, only on one machine. If I boot up this machine, and then try to Remote desktop into it, it does not work.( I get the following error: The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator. ) But if I physically log into it & then log out, and then try to Remote desktop into it, it works flawlessly. The problematic machine is Xp 64 Bit, but other systems with Xp 64 Bit work fine. Any Ideas on how to solve this?

  • Adobe Illustrator - Objects are Expanded on Restart

    - by Shatou Dev
I use Adobe Illustrator extensively for mobile development. For example, for Android app, I have many illustrations with different densities and sizes. I use many effects such as outer glow, round corners and such. However, sometimes, when I close the .ai file and re-open it later, I found all my objects expanded. Effects are expanded. For example, the round corner effect is now expanded and I cannot re-size any object. I am using a MacBook Pro. I am suspecting both Time Machine and Dropbox. As much as I can recall, it also appears with CS6 version, not CS5.

Below is a network diagram: and the configurations are below that, could anyone help me please on making them accessible? ![connecting 4 routers][1] I cant post my diagram on serverfault(less than 10 rep) so I did on stackoverflow and asked the same question. pc1: ifconfig eth0 195.11.14.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 195.11.14.255 up route add default gw 195.11.14.1 dev eth0 pc2.start: ifconfig eth0 200.1.1.7 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 200.1.1.255 up route add default gw 200.1.1.1 dev eth0 pc3: ifconfig eth0 195.20.14.9 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 195.20.1.255 up route add default gw 195.20.14.1 dev eth0 pc4: ifconfig eth0 200.2.1.11 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 200.2.1.255 up route add default gw 200.2.1.1 dev eth0 r1: ifconfig eth0 195.11.14.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 195.11.14.255 up ifconfig eth1 100.0.0.9 netmask 255.255.255.252 broadcast 100.0.0.11 up route add -net 200.1.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 100.0.0.10 dev eth1 route add default gw 100.0.0.10 lab.conf: if you need more on that Ill post it up but I think most of the info is there. Any help would be greatly appreciated especially trying to make a connection between pc4 and pc1, even if you think it does not make sense please explain why. Thank you.

I am using PowerDns on a Linux box (Debian 6). I would like to set up the powerdns server to resolve all externally unresolved DNS queries to a given, internal host. Is this possible? How is it done? I think it's necessary to use pdns-recursor, but my configuration file doesn't works ! I use mysql for backend. I add manually google.com and it's works, but if I delete entry I have "server failed", root dns (or isp dns) don't answer me.

  • fstab mount after network initialization

    - by Philip
I'm automatically mounting a NFS with fstab. Sometimes the mount fails because the hostname of the NFS mount cannot be resolved (getaddrinfo failed). I'm assuming that this happens because the network initialization is slower than the mounts. Is there any way to initialize the network before mounting any devices? I'm already using _netdev as a mount option but this does not help. This is my current fstab file: # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> /dev/md2 / ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/md1 /boot ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/sda3 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sdb3 swap swap defaults 0 0 connect.mygluster.net:/data /var/gluster/data glusterfs ro,_netdev 0

  • NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s)

    - by Zulakis
I got a new Seagate 4TB harddrive formatted with ntfs using parted /dev/sda > mklabel gpt > mkpart pri 1 -1 mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 When copying files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12MB/s. The harddrive should be capable of atleast 100MB/s. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. The system has a AMD dualcore. This is the output of parted /dev/sda unit s print: Model: ATA ST4000DM000-1F21 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 7814037168s Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 2048s 7814035455s 7814033408s pri The used kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The ntfs-3g versions I tried are ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.1 (ubuntu 12.04 default) and the newest version ntfs-3g 2013.1.13AR.2. When formatted with ext4 I get good write speeds with about 140MB/s. How can I fix the writespeed?

  • SAS disk performance drops a while after reboot.

    - by Flamewires
So we have some workstations with identical hardware. The Fedora14 box has a couple weeks uptime and still get good performance. hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 21766 MB in 2.00 seconds = 10902.12 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 586 MB in 3.00 seconds = 195.20 MB/sec The Cent 5.5 boxes however seem to be okay after a reboot, /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 34636 MB in 2.00 seconds = 17354.64 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 498 MB in 3.01 seconds = 165.62 MB/sec but some time later( unsure exactly, tested at approx 1 day uptime) /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 2132 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1064.96 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 160 MB in 3.01 seconds = 53.16 MB/sec drop to this. This is with very low load. I believe they all have the same bios settings. Any ideas what could cause this on Cent? Ask for more info. It might also be worth noting, that passing the --direct flag causes the slow boxes to perform similarly to the non-slow ones for buffered disk reads.

  • OpenVPN + iptables / NAT routing

    - by Mikeage
Hi, I'm trying to set up an OpenVPN VPN, which will carry some (but not all) traffic from the clients to the internet via the OpenVPN server. My OpenVPN server has a public IP on eth0, and is using tap0 to create a local network, 192.168.2.x. I have a client which connects from local IP 192.168.1.101 and gets VPN IP 192.168.2.3. On the server, I ran: iptables -A INPUT -i tap+ -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i tap+ -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.2.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE On the client, the default remains to route via 192.168.1.1. In order to point it to 192.168.2.1 for HTTP, I ran ip rule add fwmark 0x50 table 200 ip route add table 200 default via 192.168.2.1 iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -j MARK -p tcp --dport 80 --set-mark 80 Now, if I try accessing a website on the client (say, wget google.com), it just hangs there. On the server, I can see $ sudo tcpdump -n -i tap0 tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode listening on tap0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes 05:39:07.928358 IP 192.168.1.101.34941 > 74.125.67.100.80: S 4254520618:4254520618(0) win 5840 <mss 1334,sackOK,timestamp 558838 0,nop,wscale 5> 05:39:10.751921 IP 192.168.1.101.34941 > 74.125.67.100.80: S 4254520618:4254520618(0) win 5840 <mss 1334,sackOK,timestamp 559588 0,nop,wscale 5> Where 74.125.67.100 is the IP it gets for google.com . Why isn't the MASQUERADE working? More precisely, I see that the source showing up as 192.168.1.101 -- shouldn't there be something to indicate that it came from the VPN? Edit: Some routes [from the client] $ ip route show table main 192.168.2.0/24 dev tap0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.2.4 192.168.1.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.101 metric 2 169.254.0.0/16 dev wlan0 scope link metric 1000 default via 192.168.1.1 dev wlan0 proto static $ ip route show table 200 default via 192.168.2.1 dev tap0

  • CentOS 6.5 new Kernel not active after reboot

    - by Kristofer
Today I was running some yum updates and wanted to verify that everything went through fine by making sure I had a new kernel. To my surprise I noticed that CentOS was still running 2.6.32-431.5.1.el6.x86_64 even though it looked as though 2.6.32-431.23.3.el6 was installed. Indeed 2.6.32-431.23.3.el6 shows up in /etc/grub.conf but not in the upstart boot options. Any ideas why? In the update log it says: ---> Package kernel-firmware.noarch 0:2.6.32-431.5.1.el6 will be updated ---> Package kernel-firmware.noarch 0:2.6.32-431.23.3.el6 will be an update Could this be the reason? What does "will be an update" mean? I'm trying to rename certain video devices using udev. Here's a rule (broken down for readability): ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{busnum}=="1", ATTR{devpath}=="2", ATTR{idVendor}=="05e1", NAME="video97" It works. /dev/video97 is created But the original /dev/video1 node is STILL there. The even worse, when I try to view the /dev/video97 node in guvcview it doesn't work, while the original node DOES work.

  • Software RAID 1 Configuration

    - by Corve
I have created a software RAID 1 quite some while ago and it always seemed to work for me. However I am not completely sure that I have configured everything right and do not have the experience to check so I would be very grateful for some advice or just verification that all seems right so far. I am using Linux Fedora 20 (32 bit with plans to upgrade to 64bit) The RAID 1 should consist of two 1TB SATA hard drives. This is the output of mdadm --detail /dev/md0 /dev/md0: Version : 1.2 Creation Time : Sun Jan 29 11:25:18 2012 Raid Level : raid1 Array Size : 976761424 (931.51 GiB 1000.20 GB) Used Dev Size : 976761424 (931.51 GiB 1000.20 GB) Raid Devices : 2 Total Devices : 1 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Sat Jun 7 10:38:09 2014 State : clean, degraded Active Devices : 1 Working Devices : 1 Failed Devices : 0 Spare Devices : 0 Name : argo:0 (local to host argo) UUID : 1596d0a1:5806e590:c56d0b27:765e3220 Events : 996387 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 0 0 0 0 removed 1 8 0 1 active sync /dev/sda The RAID is mounted successfully: friedrich@argo:~ ? sudo mount -l | grep md0 /dev/md0 on /mnt/raid type ext4 (rw,relatime, data=ordered) Basically my question are: Why do I only have 1 active device? What does the State removed at bottom mean? Also I noticed some strange error messages that I see on the console on system start and shutdown and always repeating in the background when I switch with Ctrl + Alt + F2: ... ata2: irq_stat 0x00000040 connection status changed ata2: SError: { CommWake DevExch } ata2: COMRESET failed (errno=-32) ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4040000 action 0xe frozen ata2: irq_stat 0x00000040 connection status changed ata2: SError: { CommWake DevExch } ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4040000 action 0xe frozen ... Are these errors related to the RAID? Something seems wrong with the SATA devices.. All together the system works (I can read and write to the mounted raid) but I always had these strange errors on startup shutdown (probably always in the background). Thx for your help

  • Disk doesn't contain a valid partition table

    - by Jeevan Dongre
    I was running a m1.small instance ec2 ubuntu instance. I was running out of disk space, so I upgraded my instance to medium. When I upgraded I actually got 429.5 GB of space and after that I added 10 gb of volume too. When I run the "sudo fdisk -l" command I got this results. I have a filesystem that is full,"df -H" prints this: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/md1 4.0G 4.0G 361k 100% / /dev/mapper/vg00-usr 4.3G 1.4G 3.0G 32% /usr /dev/mapper/vg00-var 4.3G 2.8G 1.6G 64% /var /dev/mapper/vg00-home 4.3G 4.4M 4.3G 1% /home none 1.1G 24M 1.1G 3% /tmp tmpfs 1.1G 0 1.1G 0% /usr/local/psa/handlers/before-local tmpfs 1.1G 0 1.1G 0% /usr/local/psa/handlers/before-queue tmpfs 1.1G 0 1.1G 0% /usr/local/psa/handlers/before-remote tmpfs 1.1G 0 1.1G 0% /usr/local/psa/handlers/info tmpfs 1.1G 0 1.1G 0% /usr/local/psa/handlers/spool The server I'm renting has 1TB of hard drive. Why are these so small, how can I increase my storage ? (I'm pretty beginner with Linux). Thank you

    - by saeed144
While doing a kernel backup of an mtd (Memory Technology Device) from /dev/mtd/mtd3ro of a TI board gives many "BCH decoding failed", Here are system info #cat /proc/mtd dev: size erasesize name mtd0: 00080000 00020000 "X-Loader" mtd1: 00140000 00020000 "U-Boot" mtd2: 000c0000 00020000 "U-Boot Env" mtd3: 00500000 00020000 "Kernel" mtd4: 1f880000 00020000 "File System" here is the method used, dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd3ro of=/data/local/tmp/mtd3.bin doing a cat also returns the same error, and here is the error, BCH decoding failed BCH decoding failed yes, the destination has enough space ;) tell me what do you think? • Passing multiple sets of arguments to a command

    - by Alec
    instances contains several whitespace separated strings, as does snapshots. I want to run the command below, with each instance-snapshot pair. ec2-attach-volume --instance $instances --device /dev/sdf $snapshots For example, if instances contains A B C, and snapshots contains 1 2 3, I want the command to be called like so: ec2-attach-volume -C cert.pem -K pk.pem --instance A --device /dev/sdf 1 ec2-attach-volume -C cert.pem -K pk.pem --instance B --device /dev/sdf 2 ec2-attach-volume -C cert.pem -K pk.pem --instance C --device /dev/sdf 3 I can do either one or the other with xargs -n 1, but how do I do both?

  • OpenVZ kernel panic

I recently installed OpenVZ on my VMWare box (To do some testing) and I get the following: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p38btkv5j84bvsh/Capture.JPG the GRUB config is as follows: # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. • Apache and MySQL not working well after extending filesystem

    - by xtrimsky
    I had 4Gb on my /var (/dev/mapper/vg00-var) filesystem, and I wanted to extend it to 160Gb. I did it following this tutorial: http://faq.1and1.com/dedicated_servers/root_server/linux_admin_help/7.html Now I have 160: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/md1 4.0G 424M 3.6G 11% / /dev/mapper/vg00-usr 4.3G 1.4G 3.0G 32% /usr /dev/mapper/vg00-var 198G 6.5G 192G 4% /var /dev/mapper/vg00-home 4.3G 4.4M 4.3G 1% /home none 1.1G 0 1.1G 0% /tmp Now I have a problem, in order for Apache to work, each time I reboot, I need to also reboot apache: "apachectl -k restart" which is already terrible. I think this is because /var contains the htdocs The worst part is, mysql is not starting at all. Mysql has some files also in /var What have I done wrong ?? :( Thank you EDIT: Attaching /var/log/mysqld.log: 120602 11:17:44 InnoDB: Waiting for the background threads to start 120602 11:17:45 InnoDB: 1.1.8 started; log sequence number 8354009 120602 11:17:45 [ERROR] /usr/libexec/mysqld: unknown variable 'set-variable=local-infile=0' 120602 11:17:45 [ERROR] Aborting 120602 11:17:45 InnoDB: Starting shutdown... 120602 11:17:46 InnoDB: Shutdown completed; log sequence number 8354009 120602 11:17:46 [Note] /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown complete 120602 11:17:46 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid ended

  • How do I change the console resolution of Ubuntu 9.10 Server running on VMWare?

    - by Raam Dev
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Server in VMWare Fusion (on a Mac) and I'm having trouble changing the console resolution. It seems to be stuck on 640x480. Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub2, so there is no /etc/grub/menu.lst. I tried adding vga=791 to the kernel parameters (both during boot and by adding it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and then running update-grub2) and neither had any effect. When using vga=791, grub says that vga=791 is depreciated and that I should use gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768 instead. However, that also does absolutely nothing. I have a feeling this problem is specific to running Ubuntu 9.10 in VMWare, but Google hasn't turned up anything.
