• Send and receive data trough the power network

  I'm not interested in a hardware solution, I want to know about software that may "read" modulated signal received trough the power supply - some sort of a low-level driver that would access the power signal in a convenient place and demodulate it. Is there a way to receive signal from the computer's power supply? I'm interested in an API or library that would allow the computer to be seen as a node in a Power Line Communication network and receive data directly through the power cable, without the need for a converter. Is there any active research in this field? Edit: There is software that reads monitors and displays internal component voltages - DC voltage after being converted and filtered by the power supply - now I need is a method of data encoding that would be invariant to conversion and filtering, the original signal embedded in AC being present in some form within the converted DC signal.

  Consider the variadic function parameter: func foo(bar:Int...) -> () { } Here foo can accept multiple arguments, eg foo(5,4). I am curious about the type of Int... and its supported operations. For example, why is this invalid? func foo2(bar2:Int...) -> () { foo(bar2); } Gives a error: Could not find an overload for '_conversion' that accepts the supplied arguments Why is forwarding variadic parameters invalid? • Can I assume Flash and PHP will generate the same floating point numbers?

  In a multiplayer game I'm developing, we have a few values that are floating point numbers. The back-end (in PHP) and the front-end (in Flash) occasionally perform the same calculations on these numbers, to minimize communication. I am currently making sure that both sides are using 64-bit doubles, but am I safe to assume that all calculations will be the same? For instance, what about string to float conversion - should I worry about Flash having a potentially different implementation as PHP? (If this happens, our game will go out of sync - the client will think it is in one state while the server is in another) With some testing, it appears to be the same, but I'm just not sure. Can someone clarify this for me?

• Workaround for UnsupportedAudioFileException ?

  I'm in a very early stage of writing a small music/rhythm game in Java (via Slick framework, which in turns uses OpenAL, but that's probably irrelevant here). The game needs to read (and playback) several sound files in WAV format, but some of the files are throwing [javax.sound.sampled.UnsupportedAudioFileException] exceptions. at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(AudioSystem.java:1102) at org.newdawn.slick.openal.WaveData.create(WaveData.java:123) at org.newdawn.slick.openal.SoundStore.getWAV(SoundStore.java:713) at org.newdawn.slick.openal.SoundStore.getWAV(SoundStore.java:683) at org.newdawn.slick.Sound.<init>(Sound.java:33) The files can be played back just fine in Winamp or Foobar2000, so this means Java just don't recognize some variants of the file format. What are my options at this point? Note: The files in question are user-supplied, so i cannot just convert them beforehand (using something like audacity). Any conversion steps must be done at runtime.

  I have a real basic command-line program, in Objective-C, that searches for user inputed information. Unfourtunately, the code will only read the first word in series of words that the user enters. For example, if the user enters in "Apples are great", only "Apples" is kept (and hence searched later on), excluding the "are great" part of the sentence. Isn't it possible to return string values? I know that it is possible to it like this: string result; result.append(c1, c2); return result; I'm new to C++ so I thought that there must be more elegant solution around.

• parse this directory path without losing slash

  hi, I have a wxPython application. I am taking in a directory path from a textbox using GetValue(). I notice that while trying to parse in the directory path "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop\InputFile.xls", python sees the string as 'C:\\Documents and Settings\UserName\\Desktop\\InputFile.xls' (missing a slash between "Settings" and "UserName). Why is it that only that slash is not correctly escaped? Once the string has been changed to 'C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop\InputFile.xls', is there a type conversion or function that can does this properly? Thanks.

I edited a post of mine so I coul I overloaded << for a class, Score (defined in score.h), in score.cpp. ostream& operator<< (ostream & os, const Score & right) { os << right.getPoints() << " " << right.scoreGetName(); return os; } (getPoints fetches an int attribute, getName a string one) I get this compiling error for a test in main(), contained in main.cpp binary '<<' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'Score' (or there is no acceptable conversion) How come the compiler doesn't 'recognize' that overload as valid? I'm using Nokogiri to scrape a web page what has ’ ; characters in it, and I can't figure out how to do the conversion. here's what I tried: str.gsub(/&#8217;/,"'") str.gsub("&#8217;","'") str.gsub("GÇÖ","'") # that's how it looks when I do a puts (In the above, there's no space between the ’ and the ";", but if I don't put the space in, SO converts it to an apostrophe -- the cruel, cruel irony!) I'm sure this is covered somewhere, but couldn't find the solution here or on the web. TIA

  Is it possible to use a converter the "wrong" way around? In other words: can I swap source and target? Here's an example: I created a simple IValueConverter called NullableDecimalToStringConverter which converts an input if "" into null and a number into decimal. I use it to bind a TextBox in my WPF view to a decimal? property in my ViewModel. In another context I'd like to convert a NullableDecimal into a String in the same way... Is it possible to simply use the existing NullableDecimalToStringConverter inverted? One method is to use the parameter of the converter to tell the converter which way it should convert. But is there a .NET build in way to do such a thing? Another way would be to build a base class with both conversion methods and two separate converter which call the base class methods...

I have the following questions in mind weight can be expressed in kilograms and grams and height in meters and centimeters, so should I capture them as a BigDecimal with an appropriate precision and scale or capture them as vanilla strings and do the manipulation in the user interface. Note: I am planning to capture the kilograms and grams separately in the user interface. should the metric of measurement be part of the sql (i.e. the end user might want to view this information in pounds, inches according to his preference) OR Should I just support kilograms / meters in the database and do the conversion while showing this in the user interface

• Visual Studio 2010 Database Project does not understand Schema Names anymore?

  I just tried to upgrade a Visual Studio 2008 Database project to VS2010 and actually it is quite a mess. Hundreds of warnings, all unsolved references. It seems to boil down to Visual Studio not to understand Schema Names (aka Ownership) anymore. For example, the standard dbo schema: [$(MyDataBase)].dbo.MyTable is fine but: [$(MyDataBase)].myschema.MyTable gives an unsolved reference. It did work in VS2008. Also the abbreviation for dbo, the double dot: [$(MyDataBase)]..MyTable Doesn't work anymore. In the project property windows I restored the references to the correct servers (which were lost after the conversion) but that didn't help. This seems pretty basic but I don't have a clue how to solve this. Any help is appreciated.

In several situations however, I only need to check if values are numeric; I don't actually need or use the conversion. So, I was thinking about writing a simple function to test if a string is a double: template<typename T> bool is_double(const T& s) { try { boost::lexical_cast<double>(s); return true; } catch (...) { return false; } } My question is, are there any optimizing compilers that would drop out the lexical_cast here since I never actually use the value?   I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

  A small problem. Any idea guys why this does not work? int? nullableIntVal = (this.Policy == null) ? null : 1; I am trying to return 'null' if the left hand expression is True, else 1. Seems simple but gives compilation error - Type of conditional expression cannot be determined because there is no implicit conversion between 'null' and 'int' If I replace the " ? null : 1 " with any valid int, then there is no problem.

• How to view a DataTable while debuging

  I'm just getting started using ADO.NET and DataSets and DataTables. One problem I'm having is it seems pretty hard to tell what values are in the data table when trying to debug. What are some of the easiest ways of quickly seeing what values have been saved in a DataTable? Is there someway to see the contents in Visual Studio while debugging or is the only option to write the data out to a file? I've created a little utility function that will write a DataTable out to a CSV file. Yet the the resulting CSV file created was cut off. About 3 lines from what should have been the last line in the middle of writing out a System.Guid the file just stops. I can't tell if this is an issue with my CSV conversion method, or the original population of the DataTable. Update Forget the last part I just forgot to flush my stream writer.

• How do I create email addresses for all my users using my domain ([email protected])?

  My client wants to create email addresses for all their dotnetnuke users using their domain. The point is to keep the user's email addresses 'private' while still allowing communication through a public email address that they can control. It's not necessary to have a full webmail interface (although that would be nice). I'm thinking it would be enough just to forward any mail on and just act as a gateway. So if an email was sent to [email protected], it would be forwarded on to the email address associated with the dotnetnuke account with username 'rwain'. Is this possible to do in a shared hosting environment? Or do I need to create some custom mail server that does a conversion of the email address and forwards it?

  I'm trying to write a windows service. It installs fine, but fails when I run it with the following exception. I've searched for the string "MyNewProgramService", but I can't find any conversions that would throw this error. I've also added try/catch blocks to a bunch of code with custom exception handling without finding where this exception is occuring.
