  • How to get more detail from an exception?

    I have a .NET 4.0 web application which implements an error handler within the Application_Error event of Global.asax. When an exception occurs this intercepts it and sends me an email including a variety of information like the logged in user, the page the error occurred on, the contents of the session etc. This is all great but there is some fundamental detail missing which I seem unable to locate.   • iPhone UI: No edit button for UITableView, bad idea?

    I have a UITableViewController which lets the user drill down into different records. On the second level/view, the user can add and edit new records. But, I am not sure what to do, since the back button is on the top left, and I need to put the "Add" button on the top right, so there is no room (keeping to HIG) for the edit button, which would normally go where the back button is. (I am using a tab bar, so can't put it at the bottom.) Do you think that it is logical, to expect users to know to swipe to delete a record? Or, do I need to have an edit button? If I DO need an edit button, where should I put it if I am following HIG?

  • SSIS Custom Control Task Debugging UI in BIDS and VS

    I've created a SSIS Custom Task in C# and I'm currently developing the UI. I was wondering if there is a better way of debugging the UI instead of compiling the project, copying the DLL's into the appropriate DTS folder and then opening the test Package within BIDS and then attaching the process to Visual Studio. This part I'm not bothered about but once you've tested the UI and made changes to UI within Visual Studio. I've got to recomplile the DLL's and then repeat the entire process. I've got to close BIDS and VS because they don't release the DLL's before I have to start the entire process over again. Does anyone have any tips to speed up this process. It's just so frustrating having to do this everytime.

    Hi, I have a folder with close to 400 excel files. I need to copy the worksheets in all these excel files to a single excel file. using Interop and Reflection namespaces heres is what I have accomplished so far. And business entity assigned to each. What's the best solution to automate this process? I need to: Have layout stored in DB (in XML). Layout must support several columns, tabbed interface Automatically bind business object values to the form Automatically read form values and write to business object Must support automatic validation Some basic workflows support would be good I used to work with TFS and saw how they implemented WorkItem templates (.wit files).   • Why are the default UI controls in my iPhone app blurred?

    Why would the default iPhone interface elements, specifically the UISwitch (unmodified) and a UISegmentedControl appear slightly blurred? I have not changed them or called any private APIs. This blurring occurs when I run it both in the simulator and when I load it on my iPod Touch, so I don't think it's a one off drawing glitch. These elements were created via some code (initWithFrame:) not in interface builder. Here is a screenshot of the blurring in the simulator: http://drp.ly/14rS6a It looks similar on the actual device.     Ive created a new thread for a file browser. The thread reads the contents of a directory. What I want to do is update the UI thread to draw a graphical representation of the files and folders. I know I can't update the UI from within a new thread so what I want to do is: whilst the file scanning thread iterates through a directories files and folders pass a file path string back to the UI thread.   • Maven + SSDM Build and Runtime Environment Automation

    Preface: My Company, like most, has several run-time environments and several release versions which themselves are composed of different versions of various jars. For example, let us consider release versions 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 of Software X, which may be deployed to a developer computer, testing, or production. Software-x-1.1 is itself composed of jarA-0.9.1 and jarB-0.7.5, but software-x-1.3 is composed of jarA-1.7.31 and jarB-0.8.1. Currently we use Spring's PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer to configure run-time variables (such as database credentials), however, properties also change with release versions. We also use Maven 2 POM version 4 to specify which versions of our code need to be used. We place the version numbers of our jars as properties within profiles (dev,test,prod) inside of the parent pom and then reference those version numbers in all project poms. As of right now, we have no way to specify which project versions pertain to a given release other than the most current one. Moreover, we deploy our run-time configurations to the SSDM pickup which then configures and creates the services defined by the built versions of our software. -- Questions: Is there any procedure/tool we can use to build our product by merely providing the run-time environment and version number? IE "build 1.1 dev"? Is there anyway we can store the required jar versions for each release build? We are currently versioning all files, including the parent pom, but merely versioning the parent pom does not record which release version is pertinent to that parent pom. What else can we do to further automate the process of builds? For example, if we could manage run-time configurations within the parent pom that would be a step in the right direction, but that seems like a violation of scope. Any tool outside of our framework is inconceivable at this point, but not in the far future. Summary: How can we automate our build process to the fullest extent without being error prone?

  • UI - How I can make users effectively read what my program says?

    I have a simple form that searches through the 2000+ issues of a 3rd party webcomic. (Easy, it's like xkcd: http://url/number That form is as easy as possible, is like this: What number do you want? User writes a number, clicks ok, and goes on the 3rd party website on a new tab Then, my form asks a question: "Did you find that issue memorable? Enter the name here, and we will add it to the "best issues" in home page" When the user will write the name of the issue, it is added to the database (pending moderation by me) So, I supposed this design is the easiest and convenient that users can find. Unfortunately, NONE of the users (maybe a 2% behaved correctly) will actually read what I asked. Some of the issues are offline, and gives a 404. On that issues users will write in the textbox a completely wrong title, and correctly capitalized! It's like if i would name http://xkcd.com/627/ as "The Great Adventures of Jack Smith" Users are from around all over the country, with different browsers, and have a different cookie. I cannot believe that my users will not read what I ask, it is a WHITE PAGE with a button that disappears when clicked and a textbox.... easier than that??? Maybe i should put a checkbox with "I acknowledge that this form is for submitting memorable issues, not for fun"? Oh, who will read that? Or maybe i could enable the textbox only if the user has effectively clicked the link?

  • smart phone UI limitations

    I would like to know, what limitations there are for how far one can go in terms of replacing UI components of current touch screen smart phones, in particular iPhone, Blackberry and android based phones. What I would like to do is create a custom UI for dialing out and incoming calls. I have some experience with Blackberry development. The theme builder for it, can be used to customize certain items on the incoming call screen, but it doesn't look like that you can increase the size of answer button. I know Blackberry also gives you access to all the phone APIs, but I'm not sure that you can create your own UI that can gain preference over the Blackberry incoming call screen. And if you try to customize the incoming call screen by adding any buttons to it, they would be rendered as pictures. I could possibly design a complete UI for android, since different manufactures have different UI for android based phones. Can I do what I want to do using iPhone, Blackberry or android? Or any other phone for that matter? I am guessing may be for Nokia phones using Qt, but I prefer the 3 platforms I listed. Thanks for all your help.

    I have an Android app and I need to change UI dynamically: ex: when user presses a button, I want to change the current activity's views and, as in some cases there are a lot of views involved, I need to display a ProgressDialog. I have been using an AsyncTask, but I think that it is not the best solution, because AsyncTask's doInBackground runs a different thread, so I can't update UI from there - I have to use runOnUiThread, which runs the code in the UI Thread, but freezes the progress dialog that is shown. I guess there should be more people with similar issues, as updating UI while displaying a ProgressDialog seems to be something done regularly by applications. So does anyone have a solution to this?

  • Sending email with Windows 8 Mail (Modern UI) being blocked by AVG Firewall

    I've setup my Outlook.com email address in Windows 8 Mail (Modern UI) but is unable to send and receive emails when my AVG Internet Security 2012 Business Edition's Firewall is enable. When I disable the firewall, the emails are coming through and are being send. I know that I can most probably open the ports for IMAP on the firewall, but instead I would like to permit the application. Where/how do I find the application path for Windows 8 Mail (Modern UI) to allow all network traffic? (AVG did not show its normal Allow/Disallow notification for 1st time communications) Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Reason for .Net UI Element Thread-restriction

    We know that it is not possible to execute code that manipulates the properties of any UI element from any thread other than the thread the element was instantiated on... My question is why? I remember that when we used COM user interface elements, (in COM/VB6 days), that all UI elements were created using COM classes and co-classes that stored their resources using a memory model referred to as Thread-Local-Storage (TLS) , but as I recall, this was required because of something relaetd to the way COM components were constructed, and should not be relevant to .Net UI elements. Wha's the underlying reason why this restriction still exists? Is it because the underlying Operating System still uses COM-based Win32 API classes for all UI elements, even the ones manipulated in a managed .Net application ??
