• New at Python: GLPK not building properly / Python ImportError

  This is a beginner question, and a follow-up to this one, where I was pointed to GLPK. I'm trying to get PyGLPK, a Python binding for the GNU Linear Programming Kit up and running, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to build and install GLPK so that Python finds it correctly. This comes after running ./configure, make, and sudo make install on the GLPK libraries, and following the instructions for PyGLPK. Specifically, here is the error I get: >>> import glpk Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: dlopen(/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site- packages/glpk.so, 2): Symbol not found: __glp_lpx_print_ips Referenced from: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/glpk.so Expected in: dynamic lookup I assume that something isn't linking to somewhere else, and that it probably has something to do with paths and environment variables. However, here's where my abilities in the shell fail, and I'm at a loss over what to do next. Again, there is probably a simple answer to this, but I haven't had any luck with Google using the terminology I know.

• Should a Perl constructor return an undef or a "invalid" object?

  Question: What is considered to be "Best practice" - and why - of handling errors in a constructor?. "Best Practice" can be a quote from Schwartz, or 50% of CPAN modules use it, etc...; but I'm happy with well reasoned opinion from anyone even if it explains why the common best practice is not really the best approach. As far as my own view of the topic (informed by software development in Perl for many years), I have seen three main approaches to error handling in a perl module (listed from best to worst in my opinion): Construct an object, set an invalid flag (usually "is_valid" method). Often coupled with setting error message via your class's error handling. Pros: Allows for standard (compared to other method calls) error handling as it allows to use $obj->errors() type calls after a bad constructor just like after any other method call. Allows for additional info to be passed (e.g. 1 error, warnings, etc...) Allows for lightweight "redo"/"fixme" functionality, In other words, if the object that is constructed is very heavy, with many complex attributes that are 100% always OK, and the only reason it is not valid is because someone entered an incorrect date, you can simply do "$obj->setDate()" instead of the overhead of re-executing entire constructor again. This pattern is not always needed, but can be enormously useful in the right design. Cons: None that I'm aware of. Return "undef". Cons: Can not achieve any of the Pros of the first solution (per-object error messages outside of global variables and lightweight "fixme" capability for heavy objects). Die inside the constructor. Outside of some very narrow edge cases, I personally consider this an awful choice for too many reasons to list on the margins of this question. UPDATE: Just to be clear, I consider the (otherwise very worthy and a great design) solution of having very simple constructor that can't fail at all and a heavy initializer method where all the error checking occurs to be merely a subset of either case #1 (if initializer sets error flags) or case #3 (if initializer dies) for the purposes of this question. Obviously, choosing such a design, you automatically reject option #2.

• Parsing tab delimited file with double quotes in Perl

  I have a data set that is tab delimited with the user-agent strings in double quotes. • Drupal 6 node_view empty

  I'm trying to produce a page with a list of specific nodes but the node_view returns an empty string. I have used the blog.module as a reference, but what am I missing here?

• Help passing reference to class subroutine in Perl.

  I am trying to pass a routine to another subroutine within a Perl module. But when I pass the sub reference the passed in ref no longer has the object data. Maybe its not possible to do it this way. • jQuery update not replacing js files in Drupal 6.16.

  Hi, I am using jquery update in drupal 6.16 along with a lot of other modules. I am trying to use jquery ui 1.7.2 to render tabs. But unfortunately they don't work properly since jquery update is not replacing the jquery file (jquery 1.3.2). I checked the version using $.fn.jquery (in firebug) and got 1.2.6 (not 1.3.2 as required) as the result - and as expected the aggregated js file was using the 1.2.6 version of jquery (see source). earlier I had just replaced the core script files in /misc with the js files in sites/default/modules/jquery_update/replace folder (like you'd do in 5.x) and got the necessary result (i also renamed jquery.min.js to jquery.js ). now suddenly that stopped working after i upgraded to 6.x-2.0-alpha1 and also installed the mollom module. disabling/uninstalling mollom or down-grading jQuery update does not seem to help. the problem only occurs on the front page though. other content pages have jQuery 1.3.2 the problem can be seen here. So, basically, for some reason, jquery update is not replacing the jquery files (as it is supposed to) on the front page. and i cannot figure out why that happens. any ideas?

• Scope of "library" methods

  Hello, I'm apparently laboring under a poor understanding of Python scoping. Perhaps you can help. Background: I'm using the 'if name in "main"' construct to perform "self-tests" in my module(s). Each self test makes calls to the various public methods and prints their results for visual checking as I develop the modules. To keep things "purdy" and manageable, I've created a small method to simplify the testing of method calls: def pprint_vars(var_in): print("%s = '%s'" % (var_in, eval(var_in))) Calling pprint_vars with: pprint_vars('some_variable_name') prints: some_variable_name = 'foo' All fine and good. Problem statement: Not happy to just KISS, I had the brain-drizzle to move my handy-dandy 'pprint_vars' method into a separate file named 'debug_tools.py' and simply import 'debug_tools' whenever I wanted access to 'pprint_vars'. Here's where things fall apart. I would expect import debug_tools foo = bar debug_tools.pprint_vars('foo') to continue working its magic and print: foo = 'bar' Instead, it greets me with: NameError: name 'some_var' is not defined Irrational belief: I believed (apparently mistakenly) that import puts imported methods (more or less) "inline" with the code, and thus the variable scoping rules would remain similar to if the method were defined inline. Plea for help: Can someone please correct my (mis)understanding of scoping regards imports? Thanks, JS

• Is it possible to have asynchronous processing

  Hi, I have a requirement where I need to send continuous updates to my clients. Client is browser in this case. We have some data which updates every sec, so once client connects to our server, we maintain a persistent connection and keep pushing data to the client. I am looking for suggestions of this implementation at the server end. Basically what I need is this: 1. client connects to server. I maintain the socket and metadata about the socket. metadata contains what updates need to be send to this client 2. server process now waits for new client connections 3. One other process will have the list of all the sockets opened and will go through each of them and send the updates if required. Can we do something like this in Apache module: 1. Apache process gets the new connection. It maintains the state for the connection. It keeps the state in some global memory and returns back to root process to signify that it is done so that it can accept the new connection 2. the Apache process though has returned the status to root process but it is also executing in parallel where it going through its global store and sending updates to the client, if any. So can a Apache process do these things: 1. Have more than one connection associated with it 2. Asynchronously waiting for new connection and at the same time processing the previous connections?   Can anyone recommend a good book on Javascript module/application development. I'm a Software Engineer, so I don't need all the intro to programming stuff. What I'm really looking for is: How do you bundle the html/css/javascript together so that you can make one include that will load the whole application. I.e.: <div id="myapplication"></div> ... ... <script src="myapplication.js"> Design patterns are always welcome. I've already read Javascript the good parts, and online guides, but it's hard to find a comprehensive guide/tutorial for specifically this. There's a lot of good "this is a javascript application" and "this is a scalable framework", but I haven't had any luck with "This is how you build a javascript application, including the html and css, and this is how you deliver it nicely". I'm building a small application to start, so I'm not interested in scalability and large-scale development practices, just a nice and comprehensive guide to get me off the ground.

  Hi, I'm writing a kernel module that reads from a /proc file. When someone writes into the /proc file the reader will read it, but if it reads again while there is no "new" write, it should be blocked. In order to remember if we already read, i need to keep a map of the latest buffer that process read. To avoid that, I was told that there might be some redundant field inside the current- (task_struct struct) that i can use to my benefits in order to save some states on the current process. How can I find such fields ? and how can i avoid them being overwritten ? I read somewhere that i can use the offset field inside the struct in order to save my information there and i need to block lseek operations so that field will stay untouched. • JBOSS 7.1 started hanging after 6 months of deployment

  My application is been live from 6 months. The application is host on jboss 7.1 server. From last few days I am finding numerous problem of hanging of jboss server. Though I restart the jboss server again, it does not invoke. I need to restart the server machine itself. Can anyone please let me know what could be the cause of these problems and the workable resolutions or any suggestion ?   I have created a few UIImageViews programmatically, but I have a feeling that even though I setMultipleTouchEnabled to YES during the setup, it is not getting set properly and it's leading to multi-touch issues. My question is, within touchesBegan how do I go about asking the UIImageView that was touched if it has MultipleTouchEnabled or not? Configuration of SQL Server schema in mapping classes doesn't help because it is static and would need one set of mapping classes for each tenant. Is it possible to dynamically configure ISession which SQL Server schema should be used for mapping objects to tables?

I want the requests to actually map to the folder location /content/tenant1/images/logo.gif and /content/anothertenant/images/logo.gif I'm using asp.net Mvc 2 so I'm sure there's probably a way to setup a route to handle this or a custom route handler?   Hello, The Current Situation I have a hard drive that currently is split up like so: Primary Partition C: 9.77 GB NTFS Healthy (System) with XP Pro (in Polish) installed Extended Partition D: 39.82 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot) with XP Pro (in English) installed 6.30 GB Free space When I start my comuter I get a black and white Windows Boot Manager dual boot screen with 2 choices both being Microsoft Windows XP. The first choice is the English version of XP and the second choice is the Polish version of XP. Images of my Computer Management window and Dual Boot screen The Mission What I need to do is get rid of the entire extended partition (D: 39.82 GB & 6.30 free space) and just have the one primary C: drive which I assume will be somewheres around 55 GB big. So in the end I just want XP Pro in English running on my C: drive and no black and white boot screen to show up when starting up my laptop. The Question How do I go about successfully completing The Mission with out making my computer a useless pile of silicon, plastic and metal? UPDATE: So I went ahead and tried to follow Neal's suggestion but hit a wall. I got to a Windows XP Pro install screen that had the 3 following options as well as my drive data: To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press Enter To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C To delete the selected partition, press D 57232 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] C: Partition1 [NTFS] 10001 MB ( 4642 MB free ) Unpartitioned space 6448 MB D: Partition2 [NTFS] 40774 MB ( 26225 MB free ) Unpartitioned space 8 MB I figured I would go with the first choice ((To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press Enter)) because I just wanted to set up Windows XP on C: Partition1 (which was preselected) so I pressed Enter which brought me to a screen displaying this message: You chose to install Windows XP on a partition that contains another operating system. Installing Windows XP on this partition might cause the other operating system to function improperly. CAUTION: Installing multiple operating systems on a single partition is not recommended. So this leads me to 2 new questions: How do I get rid of the Windows XP (Polish language) install on C: Partition 1 so that I can cleanly and safely install Windows XP (English language) on it? Neal, is this what you meant by me possibly having to delete the partition that the Windows XP (Polish language) install was located on? Since I have the option to delete partitions with the 3rd choice ((To delete the selected partition, press D)), should I do that on this screen or wait until I have Windows XP (English language) safely installed on C: Partition 1? I have to ask these questions because I have read that it is possibly dangerous to delete hard drive partitions. Just being cautious.

  Hi, All I'm using English version of Vista and having problems with using programs that display Russian characters somewhere. For example dictionaries doesn't work for me, since they display Russian character. Also I see just "magic" characters in text editor (notepad) when open a Russian text file. I tried to change whole Vista Interface language to Russian, but it still didn't solve the problem. I CAN read any web page from browser, that's not a problem. Also adding "Russian" in "Text Services and Input Languages" doesn't solve this problem. Does anyone know how to solve this? Thanks. My System: 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium - SP2

• Windows 7 wont boot from any boot loader except for 'Windows Boot Manager' after partition resize

  I have a triple boot system on a single SSD. OSX, Windows 7, and Ubuntu. I use Chimera (basically another version of Chameleon) as my boot loader. Usually I can boot all 3 without any issue, but after using GParted to make my Ubuntu partition 2 Gigs larger, Windows 7 throws me an error when trying to boot to it from either Chimera or Grub. The error is consistently: 0xc000000e "cant find \Boot\BCD" (slightly paraphrased). However, I can still get into Windows by selecting "Windows Boot Manager" from the boot options in my bios. I've already tried several known fixes for similar issues, including bootrec /rebuildbcd (and variations), and BootRec.exe/fixMBR + BootRec.exe/fixBoot. Ive also tried Chkdsk. At best this has made it so Windows 7 boots on it's own by default (making me have to reinstall Chimera and change back my boot settings in the bios). At worst this made it so Windows wont boot period. Now I'm back full circle where I started. A detail that might be useful is that bootrec /rebuildbcd says that the number of found Windows installations is 0. How do I get it back so I can boot Win7 through another boot loader so I don't have to manually select it in the bios? Preferably without a reinstall.

• System Rescue CD on multiboot usb not working

  I have a multiboot usb with System Rescue CD and GRUB2 on it. When I try to boot it, it tries to find systemrescuecd/sysrcd.dat, attempts to mount /dev/sr0 and all the partitions on /dev/sda before declaring cannot find systemrescuecd/sysrcd.dat on devices and dumping me onto a primitive shell. The relevant entries in grub.cfg: menuentry "SystemRescueCd 32bit" { linux /systemrescuecd/isolinux/rescuecd rootfs=/systemrescuecd subdir=systemrescuecd dostartx setkmap=us initrd /systemrescuecd/isolinux/initram.igz } menuentry "SystemRescueCd 64bit" { linux /systemrescuecd/isolinux/rescue64 rootfs=/systemrescuecd subdir=systemrescuecd dostartx setkmap=us initrd /systemrescuecd/isolinux/initram.igz } I think the problem is that System Rescue CD cannot see /dev/sdb, which is my usb, but I don't know where to begin to fix it. If it helps, I set up my USB with a utility called MultiSystem, which is like MultiISO for Linux.

  I am currently choosing between Intel Core i7-3770 (quad, Ivy) and Intel Core i7-3930K (6 cores, Sandy Bridge-E). This machine will be used for both work (Adobe, Autodesk software, graphic and coding-related) and gaming. Even if some applications I will use are capable to utilize all 6 cores at once, is it worth preferring Sandy Bridge-E to newer Ivy Bridge? Games aren't and probably will perform better on Ivy, won't they? 6-core is also twice as expensive as a quad Ivy.

• pfSense with two WANs, routing skype traffic over a specific WAN

  I have a pfSense setup with two WANs (WAN1 and WAN2) and one LAN network. The two WANs are setup for failover. However, QoS has recently been an issue for skype calls in our office place (about 30 people) so we want to dedicate WAN2 for skype traffic (we use skype for all voip calls, etc.) As Skype is notoriously difficult to deal with, does anyone have any suggestions on how I should deal with this?
