  Hello, I setup my master and slave using freebsd. im currently running the Bind 9.X version, so far everything is working successfully. Just one small problem. I cant get the master copy of my dns to transfer it to the slave server. i included transfer-allow {192.168.1.111;}; // this is the slave servers ip i ran the rndc reload command to check but i dont see the copy in the /etc/named/master/? Any help would be necessary and if you like the layout of my dns, I can provide that too.

• CentOS 5 - Unable to resolve addresses for NFS mounts during boot

  I have a few servers running CentOS 5.3, and am trying to get 2 NFS mount-points to mount automatically on boot. I added 2 lines similar to the following to fstab: server1:/path1 /path1 nfs soft 0 0 server2:/path2 /path2 nfs soft 0 0 When I run 'mount -a' manually, the mount points are properly mounted as expected. However, when I reboot the machine, only /path2 is mounted. For /path1 I get the following error: mount: can't get address for server1 It obviously looks like a DNS issue, but the record is properly configured in all the DNS servers and is mounted properly if I re-try the mount after the reboot is completed. I could properly fix this by using IP address instead of hostnames in /etc/fstab or adding server1 to /etc/hosts but I would rather not do that. What might be the reason for failing to resolve this specific address during boot time? Why the problem is only with the 1st mount point and the 2nd is properly mounted despite having identical configuration?

  I'm trying to figure out why sometimes the client fails to load objects/requests from a dynamic page served from Apache/MySql/Debian machine. Let's say 13 objects are to be loaded for a total of 185.3 KB load, with no external objects (no DNS lookups) and no other traffic at the same time, randomly some of those object do not load. However, if I perform a refresh, sometimes all of them load or some might fail again. I only have 1Mbps/up and my DNS is been hosted externally (everydns). What could be the reason of this issue? Any comments will be appreciated.

• Windows 8.1 killed my wifi

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? • Orange Brightbox and NO-IP.com

  Strange one here i didnt know where to ask, and i know this is a developer resource but i was hoping with everyones tech know how someone may have a solution for my problem. Ok i had an orange livebox before and in the dynamic dns settings it had no-ip.com as a drop down option with login variables to update my account with a dynamic ip address. This worked great for years. However my livebox died and i now have a orange brightbox, and this doesnt have no-ip.com as a login update option for dynamic dns on my router. Does any one have any idea how i can get my domain to point to my home server with a dynamic ip address ideally for free? This is merely for testing and to have a backup server for my main remote server.

• Increasing load capacity for growing website

  My website currently runs on a dedicated web server (with LiteSpeed) and dedicated MySQL database server. It's a download based site with a lot of user-generated content, which can be streamed and downloaded, there are also thousands of thumbnails and static content. I'm at the stage where the web server can no longer handle the amount of traffic, so I'm looking a how best to increase capacity considering the large amount of downloadable content. My host suggests mirroring everything on a second web server and distributing the load between them using either DNS Made Easy, or to have my own load balancer (using ldirector) in front of the two web servers. Could anyone advise whether the above method would be the best option? Does any one have any experience with DNS Made Easy and/or ldirector? I'd appreciate any help.

  We're playing a going-away prank on a coworker, and would like to use a rule in our internal DNS server to redirect techcrunch.com to point at one of our internal development servers. Basically, I'd like to accomplish the same thing as adding a line to a Linux /etc/hosts file, only for the entire network. I have access to our DNS server. How would you go about doing this? I created an entry in the reverse lookup subnet with the 'Host Name' of techcrunch.com and the 'Host IP' of our development server, a Linux box running Debian on which I've created a virtualhost to handle requests to techcrunch.com. It doesn't appear to be working, however, and my expertise has reached its limit. Thanks!

• How to address an EC2 instance from both inside and outside datacenter?

  I'm trying to find a good way of being able to address my EC2 database instance from both inside and outside of the datacenter. Other EC2 instances need to be able to call into it, and other clients like pgAdmin might need to connect to it from the outside world as well. It's my understanding that using the internal and external DNS names is sustainable long term as each reboot leads to a change. I'm thinking of associating an Elastic IP with the instance and giving it an A record (say db1.mydomain.com) which I then will use both within and outside the datacenter. Further instances in the same role will get the same treatment and a DNS record of db2.mydomain.com etc. Now, is there a cleaner and more stable way of achieving this result? Am going about this the wrong way? Suggestions?

• Setting Up Customer-Specific Domains

  I can go to Fog Creek's web site, setup a new account, and they will instantly assign me a URL such as 'mycompany.fogbugz.com' (where 'mycompany' is something I make up, as opposed to some value assigned by Fog Creek). I can do the same type of thing with Beanstalk and many other vendors. I have been Googling around trying to figure out exactly how this works. 1: In the above example, is 'mycompany.fogbugz.com' set up in DNS in some special way other than how one would setup a vanilla 'www.foo.com' domain? 2: Assuming Fog Creek uses Tomcat (which I am sure is NOT true, but pretend it is) would they be likely to have created a tomcat/webapps/mycompany subdirectory on their server? Or is there some simpler way to handle this? I'm obviously not a DNS or TC wizard. Any insight appreciated. Happy New Year!

  On my VPS I have 3 IPs which all have their own domain and their own reverse-DNS records. I have a website on each domain, sending emails. The problem is: the emails are rejected by many hosts because the reverse dns doesn't fit the host in the helo. All the emails are sent from the primary IP and therefore only one of the three domains work. I am looking for a way for exim to check which email adress i'm using to send the email and adapt the domain/IP transmitted in the helo. I have already tried many configurations but nothing has worked up to now. Simply changing MX-Records is impossible too, as I recieve (and also send) email via gmail and I don't want to set up my own webmail. Does anyone know a solution?

  I have set up a local site under IIS 7.5 under port 900. to access it I should type localhost:900 in the address bar. I'm a little bit familiar with the System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file and I know I can define my custom name with IP adderss there. For example I can add: 127.0.0.1 MyLocalSite and whenever I type in http://MyLocalSite in the browser, The DNS resolves its IP as 127.0.0.1. Is there anyway that I can specify port number in that file as well? (e.g. 127.0.0.1:900 MySecondSite and the DNS resolves it correctly) I tried 127.0.0.1:900 and 127.0.0.1::900 with no luck.

  I have a wireless internet connection through BSNL. I have a windows 7 ultimate, and using latest Google chrome. During night time ie from 12:30 am onwards till around 5:30 am, I have the following problem: Only the following webpages load: Google Search Google images and all related to google product pages like you see them on the google home page. Blogspot webpages as supported through Google. Any other site loading gets stuck with the status message:- Waiting for www.thaturl.com .... And it goes on and on. Why does this happen? I checked around googling for this but no solution at all. By the way I tried changing my dns addresses too sometimes from automatically to opendns and then Google public dns. I need some solution which might help me to load other websites also. Thanks in advance.

  I have an absolutely bizarre problem and it has STUMPED me.. I cannot seem to flush the DNS on my Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have tried sudo dscacheutil -flushcache , i've tried dscacheutil -flushcache and it hasn't worked. I'm building a website, and changed the directories yesterday. Now when I check it on my other machine, it works fine. When I get somewhere from distance to check, it works fine, but it's seemingly stuck in the DNS on this machine as the CSS is not showing. Is there a hard-flush method (if that makes sense)? The two above did not work.

  Hi serverfault, I have a server in a clients network, seperated from theirs with a router/firewall, the intention is to have this server available through one hostname (example.com) My idea is to have (at least) a DNS server in the outside, to have outside (out of the clients' network) access the internal server. The problem would at that point be the internal client (PC A) My question: What would I have to do to make something like this work? Is it even possible or already done? The goal is to not have to change anything on either PC A or PC B, while both should access the same "internal server" while surfing to "example.com" Perhaps adding logic to the DNS server would work (Detect the external IP of internal client [PC A] is the same as the IP for example.com - Give the local IP as reply?) If I'm running a web service on amazon ec2, distributed across many instances, how can I make it so a single domain name can be used to access the entire pool of servers, which will be changing from time to time? Since the instances may be present one second but gone the next (and vice versa), I need a way to randomly pick an active member of the cluster to route to.   I am currently working on a site in my free time with a few other guys and we are wanting to redirect xxx.com to our new site, yyy.com. So we have xxx.com set to redirect the 216.111.11.1 which is the IP for yyy.com. However, this just says the website is unavailable so it seems as though we need a DNS PTR to redirect 216.111.11.1 to yyy.com. Is there any way to do this without a DNS PTR?   I upgrade my ubuntu desktop to 13.10. Here's the host line from /etc/nsswitch.conf: hosts: files wins mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 I've added wins right after files (and also tried before dns. Nothing helps. Reboot after every change. What am I missing?

  If you travel outside the US you'll notice that most of the streaming services like Netflix, Pandora, hulu etc are blocked, usually by the service providers themselves. To get around that, people use VPN services. They basically tunnel your traffic through a US server so your requests seem like they are originating in the US. These VPN services fix this blocking problem, but make your connection slower than the normal unVPNed connection. Recently however I've come across something called SmartDNS provided by overplay.net. You pay $5 a month and you get access to their DNS servers. After you change to their DNS you get access to the blocked streaming sites, without slowing down your normal traffic like email and browsing. What I'd like to know is the technical details of how this SmartDNS works. I've done some quick research but that didn't turn up anything of substance. Anybody out there knows?
