• Consumer Oriented Search In Oracle Endeca Information Discovery - Part 2

  As discussed in my last blog posting on this topic, Information Discovery, a core capability of the Oracle Endeca Information Discovery solution enables businesses to search, discover and navigate through a wide variety of big data including structured, unstructured and semi-structured data. With search as a core advanced capabilities of our product it is important to understand some of the key differences and capabilities in the underlying data store of Oracle Endeca Information Discovery and that is our Endeca Server. In the last post on this subject, we talked about Exploratory Search capabilities along with support for cascading relevance. Additional search capabilities in the Endeca Server, which differentiate from simple keyword based "search boxes" in other Information Discovery products also include: The Endeca Server Supports Set Search.  The Endeca Server is organized around set retrieval, which means that it looks at groups of results (all the documents that match a search), as well as the relationship of each individual result to the set. Other approaches only compute the relevance of a document by comparing the document to the search query – not by comparing the document to all the others. For example, a search for “U.S.” in another approach might match to the title of a document and get a high ranking. But what if it were a collection of government documents in which “U.S.” appeared in many titles, making that clue less meaningful? A set analysis would reveal this and be used to adjust relevance accordingly. The Endeca Server Supports Second-Order Relvance. Unlike simple search interfaces in traditional BI tools, which provide limited relevance ranking, such as a list of results based on key word matching, Endeca enables users to determine the most salient terms to divide up the result. Determining this second-order relevance is the key to providing effective guidance. Support for Queries and Filters. Search is the most common query type, but hardly complete, and users need to express a wide range of queries. Oracle Endeca Information Discovery also includes navigation, interactive visualizations, analytics, range filters, geospatial filters, and other query types that are more commonly associated with BI tools. Unlike other approaches, these queries operate across structured, semi-structured and unstructured content stored in the Endeca Server. Furthermore, this set is easily extensible because the core engine allows for pluggable features to be added. Like a search engine, queries are answered with a results list, ranked to put the most likely matches first. Unlike “black box” relevance solutions, which generalize one strategy for everyone, we believe that optimal relevance strategies vary across domains. Therefore, it provides line-of-business owners with a set of relevance modules that let them tune the best results based on their content. The Endeca Server query result sets are summarized, which gives users guidance on how to refine and explore further. Summaries include Guided Navigation® (a form of faceted search), maps, charts, graphs, tag clouds, concept clusters, and clarification dialogs. Users don’t explicitly ask for these summaries; Oracle Endeca Information Discovery analytic applications provide the right ones, based on configurable controls and rules. For example, the analytic application might guide a procurement agent filtering for in-stock parts by visualizing the results on a map and calculating their average fulfillment time. Furthermore, the user can interact with summaries and filters without resorting to writing complex SQL queries. The user can simply just click to add filters. Within Oracle Endeca Information Discovery, all parts of the summaries are clickable and searchable. We are living in a search driven society where business users really seem to enjoy entering information into a search box. We do this everyday as consumers and therefore, we have gotten used to looking for that box. However, the key to getting the right results is to guide that user in a way that provides additional Discovery, beyond what they may have anticipated. This is why these important and advanced features of search inside the Endeca Server have been so important. They have helped to guide our great customers to success.

• Netbeans / persistence API error

  I am following this tutorial, I'm using netbeans 6.5.1 http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db-custom.html When I get to the part where I create the "new entity class from database", which is in the "Customizing the Master/Detail View" section of the tutoiral. I can't ever compile because I get this error in the task list (and I get a runtime error when I run)... Atleast I think these two are related. Error Named queries can be defined only on an Entity or MappedSuperclass class. • Data recovery on a data HDD (no OS)

  I am helping a family member with a dead hard disk. It is a seagate 200Gb 3.5" HDD in one of those old-school external enclosures. The problem was that windows failed to detect the hard disk when plugged in through USB. I removed the hard disk from its enclosure, and plugged it into my desktop PC. The BIOS does detect it upon POST, but unfortunately windows 7 would refuse to boot. It will get stuck on the loading screen with the glowing windows logo. Safe mode doesn't help either. What options do I have before going for some professional data recovery? edit: Someone modified the Title to something completely different from what I was asking, i just changed it back. 1) 2 HDD drives, DiskA(Dead), DiskB(my OS disk) 2) when B is connected to my system, everything works fine 3) when A AND B is connected, failure to boot. POSTs fine, but windows wont load 4) A has NO OS, its PURE data. It came from an EXTERNAL HDD enclosure which doesnt belong to me, and im trying to do data recovery.

• IMAPSync Migration to Exchange 2010 SP1: Exchange drops connections while checking for existence of folders

  I'm migrating from ZImbra Collaboration Suite to Exchange 2010 SP1. I'm testing IMAPSync as a possible migration tool and have hit a problem with the IMAP server in Exchange 2010. For each account it migrates, IMAPSync loops through the list of folders in the source mailbox and tests for the existence of each one in the destination mailbox. It then goes on to create those folders that do not exist and copy over the messages. It's the intial testing for the existence of the folders that is giving me a problem. The response given by the Exchange server when the folder does not yet exist is given as an error: "R=""16 NO IMAPSyncTest/8 doesn't exist."" After ten of these errors have been issued in succession, the Exchange server appears to stop responding to the IMAP session. Enabling protocol logging for IMAP confirms that the 10th request for a non-existant folder is the last request to be logged on the server. IMAPSync carries on merrily without seeming to realise its connection has gone and thus fails to create any folders. I've logged this with the tool's creator. Does anyone have any idea why Exchange is stopping responding to the connections though? The behaviour looks rather like throttling, although the 'ten strikes and you're out' trigger does not seem to correspond to any of the triggers on the ThrottlingPolicies. Just to check, I've tried creating a new ThrottlingPolicy, turned everything that I think might be relevant up to 11 and applied it to the my test mailbox. Policy settings are listed below, along with IMAP settings. Everything else should be pretty much as default.   As the steward of Java, Oracle recognizes the importance and value of the Java community, and the relevant role it plays in keeping Java the largest, most vibrant developer community in the world.   In order to increase Oracle’s touch with Java developers worldwide, we are shifting our focus from a flagship JavaOne event followed by several regional JavaOne conferences, to a new outreach model which continues with the JavaOne flagship event, as well as a mix of online content, regional Java Tours, and regional 3rd party event participation.  1. JavaOne JavaOne continues to remain the premier hub for Java developers where you are given the opportunity to improve your Java technical skills, and interact with other members of the Java community. JavaOne is centered on open collaboration and sharing, and Oracle will continue to invest in JavaOne as a unique stand-alone event for the Java community. • Troubleshooting Oracle Java 7 with Firefox

  I run Ubuntu 13.04 with up-to-date Firefox and Oracle Java 7 is installed from the package oracle-java7-installer from the ppa:webupd8team/java PPA. Java doesn't work in Firefox. When I start firefox from the command line, and open a webpage with some java, the java applet doesn't work and in the terminal firefox prints: $ firefox (process:28565): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java": error=13, Permission denied at java.lang.ProcessBuilder.start(ProcessBuilder.java:1041) at sun.plugin2.jvm.JVMLauncher.start(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.main.server.JVMInstance.startImpl(Unknown Source) (and some 20-30 lines more) (I guess the GLib-line can be ignored here.) Also, when I close the tab that contained the java applet, firefox freezes and I have to kill it. However, the permissions look fine: $ ls -l /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5746 Jul 22 17:35 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java So, what could be wrong here? What to check next? EDIT: Oracle Java is needed for stupid Danske Bank online banking. (You are of course welcome to suggest me to change my bank.)

• Cross-Platform Migration using Heterogeneous Data Guard

  Most people think of Data Guard as a disaster recovery solution, and it certainly excels in that role. However, did you know that you can also use Data Guard for platform migration under some conditions? While you would normally have your primary and standby Data Guard systems running on the same OS and hardware platform, there are some heterogeneous combinations of primary and stanby system that are supported by Data Guard Physical Standby. One example of heterogenous Data Guard support is the ability to go between Linux and Windows on many processor architectures. Another is the support for environments that are running HP-UX on both PA-RIsC and Itanium hardware. Brand new in 11.2.0.2 is the ability to have both SPARC Solaris and IBM AIX on Power Systems in the same Data Guard environment. See My Oracle Support note 413484.1 for all the details about supported platform combinations. So, why mention this in an upgrade blog? Simple: much of the time required for a platform migration is usually spent copying files from one system to another. If you are moving between systems that are supported by heterogenous Data Guard, then you can reduce that migration downtime to a matter of minutes. This can be a big win when downtime is at a premium (and isn't downtime always at a premium? In addition, you get the benefit of being able to keep the old and new environments synchronized until you are sure the migration is successful! • New Oracle Solaris 11 Administration book

  During the development of Oracle Solaris 11, one of the main goals was to modernize the operating system and remove some of the existing frustrations that our administrative audience had in deploying and using the platform within data centers around the world. That meant a comprehensive clean out of some existing technologies to provision the operating system (replacing Jumpstart with Automated Installer) and manage system software (replacing SVR4 with IPS packaging), consolidate the vast spectrum of networking configuration, and enhance the user environment to provide familiarity for those who were used to administering Linux environments among many other things. While some considered the changes to Oracle Solaris 11 as a negative change, most will be impressed at how far we've come - the deeper integration of key technologies, presented in a consolidated and consistent form. It is easier to administer the Oracle Solaris platform that ever before, and I have no doubt that administrators coming from other platforms will be hugely impressed with what they see, especially if they're judging based on past experiences of Solaris 8 and Solaris 9. In fact I'd go further to say that Oracle Solaris 11 is a more powerful, integrated and usable platform that most Linux platforms I've seen. But as with anything, there's always an initial learning curve to get through. • JDK bug migration: bugs.sun.com now backed by JIRA

  The JDK bug migration from a Sun legacy system to JIRA has reached another planned milestone: the data displayed on bugs.sun.com is now backed by JIRA rather than by the legacy system. Besides maintaining the URLs to old bugs, bugs filed since the migration to JIRA are now visible too. The basic information presented about a bug is the same as before, but reformatted and using JIRA terminology: Instead of a "category", a bug now has a "component / subcomponent" classification. As outlined previously, part of the migration effort was reclassifying bugs according to a new classification scheme; I'll write more about the new scheme in a subsequent blog post. Instead of a list of JDK versions a bug is "reported against," there is a list of "affected versions." The names of the JDK versions have largely been regularized; code names like "tiger" and "mantis" have been replaced by the release numbers like "5.0" and "1.4.2". Instead of "release fixed," there are now "Fixed Versions." The legacy system had many fields that could hold a sequence of text entries, including "Description," "Workaround", and "Evaluation." JIRA instead only has two analogous fields labeled as "Description" and a unified stream of "Comments." Nearly coincident with switching to JIRA, we also enabled an agent which automatically updates a JIRA issue in response to pushes into JDK-related Hg repositories. These comments include the changeset URL, the user making the push, and a time stamp. These comments are first added when a fix is pushed to a team integration repository and then added again when the fix is pushed into the master repository for a release. We're still in early days of production usage of JIRA for JDK bug tracking, but the transition to production went smoothly and over 1,000 new issues have already been filed. Many other facets of the migration are still in the works, including hosting new incidents filed at bugs.sun.com in a tailored incidents project in JIRA.

  In case you haven't figured it out by now, Oracle reserves an awful lot of announcements for Oracle Open World. As a result, the show is always a lot of fun for geeks. What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one. I understand, not everyone can have the raw animal magnetism of a sysadmin, or the debonair sophistication of a C++ developer, so some of you have no choice but to pretend. I won't judge. I'll also be doing video interviews of as many techie people as I can corner. I've got more than 30 interviews already scheduled. Most of them will be 3-5 minutes long. I'll be asking our best technical minds what's cool about their latest technologies and what impact it will have on system admins or system developers. • How do I set default values on new properties for existing entities after light weight core data migration?

  I've successfully completed light weight migration on my core data model. My custom entity Vehicle received a new property 'tirePressure' which is an optional property of type double with the default value 0.00. When 'old' Vehicles are fetched from the store (Vehicles that were created before the migration took place) the value for their 'tirePressure' property is nil. (Is that expected behavior?) So I thought: "No problem, I'll just do this in the Vehicle class:" - (void)awakeFromFetch { [super awakeFromFetch]; if (nil == self.tirePressure) { [self willChangeValueForKey:@"tirePressure"]; self.tirePressure = [NSNumber numberWithDouble:0.0]; [self didChangeValueForKey:@"tirePressure"]; } } Since "change processing is explicitly disabled around" awakeFromFetch I thought the calls to willChangeValueForKey and didChangeValueForKey would mark 'tirePresure' as dirty. But they don't. Every time these Vehicles are fetched from the store 'tirePressure' continues to be nil despite having saved the context.

• How to import data to SAP

  Hi, As a complete stranger in town of SAP, I want to transfer my own application's (mobile salesforce automation) data to SAP. My application has records of customers, stocks, inventory, invoices (and waybills), cheques, payments, collections, stock transfer data etc. I have an additional database which holds matchings of records. ie. A customer with ID 345 in my application has key 120-035-0223 in SAP. Every record, for sure, has to know it's counterpart, including parameters. After searching Google and SAP help site for a day, I covered that it's going to be a bit more pain than I expected. Especially SAP site does not give even a clue on it. Say I couldn't find. We transferred our data to some other ERP systems, some of which wanted XML files, some other exposed their APIs. My point is, is Sql Server's SSIS an option for me? I hope it is, so I can fight on my own territory. Since client requests would vary a lot, I count flexibility as most important criteria. Also, I want to transfer as much data as I could.
