• We have a Solaris 9 server running Oracle 10G and have been getting memory consumption errors for a few weeks now

  We recently upgraded our Enterprise application and everything worked ok until one weekend when we did a server reboot, ever since then we have run into memory errors. The server has 4GB of physical memory installed and the kernel parameters are set to the following (/etc/system). I'm not an Oracle guy so I'm not sure where to start looking but any informaiton is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. There are two databases running on this server, one is a production database and the other is a pre-production database. • samsung netbook OS for clean install

  Hello - I recently had a problem with a corrupted registry on a samsung N120. When all else failed i reformatted the drive. However having bought the machine with windows home ed pre-installed, I didn't have original windows disck for the clean install. So I managed to install another edition of windows XP (PRO this time). Now windows opens, but several key functions are missing. e.g.: screen resolution - will not allow me any but 800x600 resolution native buttons - such as the fn + screen brightness is not working at all. Any suggestions please? ? Is there a way to get the samsung OS online (since I do have the manufacturer's/installed product key)? thanks PS: It has been my intention to install ubuntu, but i need to know i will not lose functions like screen brightness, volume, and the trackpad's scrolling function. I'd be happy to bypass the windows option if i was sure to have full keyboard/samsung functionality

• windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) won't boot up, I've tried system repair startup

  I've been trying to get my computer to boot up in the last 2 hours. I've tried using the system repair at start up, but all that does is it sends me to a screen with the stock Windows background that is enlarged with a cursor on the screen. It's not frozen and I can move the cursor around, but there is nothing to click on. I've tried to get into Task Manager and such, but the shortcut doesn't work. I have no back ups of the OS as it came pre-installed on the computer. Is there anyway for me to get my computer to work (I don't mind starting fresh)? I do have access to another computer but it's my brothers and it has Windows XP (I'd like to keep my Windows 7).

• DropDownList not working 100% in ASP.Net MVC

  I am quite confused with how to effectively use the Html.DropDownList helper for ASP.NET MVC. Background: I have a 5-page form, which saves data to the form each time "Next" is clicked. Users may navigate back and forth between sections, so previous sections will already be pre-populated with previously-entered data. This works for TextBoxes. But not DropDownLists. • How to run script from root as another user (with user PATH)

  I would like to have these commands run as the ss user from root mkdir bin cp -r /opt/gitolite . gitolite/install -ln gitolite setup -pk ss.pub mkdir -p .gitolite/hooks/common ln -s /opt/pre-receive .gitolite/hooks/common/ so everything is executed in /home/ss. The 4th line requires $HOME/bin as you can see from the 3rd line. The only way I can get it to work is by adding su -c "command" ss to each line, which is not a nice hack. This is an extension to my previous question, where I wasn't precise enough. Question How do I run all these commands as a script in a practical way?

• Entity Framework Code-First to Provide Replacement for ASP.NET Profile Provider

  A while back, I coordinated a project to add support for the SQL Table Profile Provider in ASP.NET 4 Web Applications.  We urged Microsoft to improve ASP.NET’s built-in Profile support so our workaround wouldn’t be necessary. Instead, Microsoft plans to provide a replacement for ASP.NET Profile in a forthcoming release. In response to my feature suggestion on Connect, Microsoft says we should look for something even better using Entity Framework: “When code-first is officially released the final piece of a full replacement of the ASP.NET Profile will have arrived. Once code-first for EF4 is released, developers will have a really easy and very approachable way to create any arbitrary class, and automatically have the .NET Framework create a table to provide storage for that class. Furthermore developer will also have full LINQ-query capabilities against code-first classes. “ The downside is that there won’t be a way to retrofit this Profile replacement to pre- ASP.NET 4 Web applications. At least there’ll still be the MVP workaround code. It looks like it’s time for me to dig into a CTP of EF Code-First to see what’s available.   Scott Guthrie has been blogging about Code-First Development with Entity Framework 4. It’s not clear when the EF Code-First is coming, but my guess is that it’ll be part of the VS 2010/.NET 4 service pack.

• LLBLGen Pro v3.0 with Entity Framework v4.0 (12m video)

  Today I recorded a video in which I illustrate some of the database-first functionality available in LLBLGen Pro v3.0. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 also supports model-first functionality, which I hope to illustrate in an upcoming video. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 is currently in beta and is scheduled to RTM some time in May 2010. It supports the following frameworks out of the box, with more scheduled to follow in the coming year: LLBLGen Pro RTL (our own o/r mapper framework), Linq to Sql, NHibernate and Entity Framework (v1 and v4). The video I linked to below illustrates the creation of an entity model for Entity Framework v4, by reverse engineering the SQL Server 2008 example database 'AdventureWorks'. The following topics (among others) are included in the video: Abbreviation support (example: convert 'Qty' into 'Quantity' during name construction) Flexible, framework specific settings Attribute definitions for various elements (so no requirement for buddy-classes or messing with generated code or templates) Retrieval of relational model data from a database Reverse engineering of tables into entities, automatically placed in groups Auto-creation of inheritance hierarchies Refactoring of entity fields into Value Type Definitions (DDD) Mapping a Typed view onto a stored procedure resultset Creation of a Typed list (definition of a query with a projection) on a set of related entities Validation and correction of found inconsistencies and errors Generating code using one of the pre-defined presets Illustration of the code in vs.net 2010 It also gives a good overview of what it takes with LLBLGen Pro v3.0 to start from a new project, point it to a database, get an entity model, perform tweaks and validation and generate code which is ready to run.   Aircel, one of the leading wireless mobile services provider of India has just announced that iPhone 4S will be available to its customers on November 25. You can start pre-booking the phone from November 18 through Aircel website or walking into an Aircel showroom near you. My multiple calls to Aircel customer care division were no use to get the details on the price information. Three times the call got disconnected before a customer care executive tried fetching the details on price and models. We hear from BGR India blog that iPhone 4S price is going start at Rs. 40,000 for a 16GB model and may go up to Rs. 50,000 for a 64 GB model. Airtel, another leading mobile service provider in India, who sells iPhone in India is not sure when they are going to start offering iPhone 4S to its customer. I reached customer care regarding the iPhone 4S and they don’t have any details to offer at the moment. It’s good to see Apple releasing iPhone 4S to India markets just after couple of months of International release. Apple was earlier criticized for releasing iPhone 2, iPhone 3G in India almost an year after the international launch while companies like Nokia release their flagship models just after weeks of international launch. One of the most sought after feature of iPhone 4S is Siri and my friends in US told that it works amazingly good. Siri does not have any problem in understanding Indian English accent and it is very good at recognizing the Indian names in contacts list. But at the same time we do hear reports that Siri does not help much if it’s used outside USA. Considering that Siri is a software it should be possible for Apple to improve it to work better outside USA. But who know the priorities of Apple! As we are using the co-existence feature , we have to install the OAM server and upgrade the existing OSSO 10g server to the OAM servers. OAM Upgrade Steps Overview Pre-Req : You already have a OAM 11g Installed Upgrade Step 1: Configure User Store & Make it Primary Upgrade Step 2: Create Policy Domain , this is dome by UA automatically Upgrade Step 3: Migrate Partners : This is done by running Upgrade Assistant Verify successful Upgrade Details on UA step : To Upgrade the existing OSSO 10g servers to OAM server , this is done by running the UA script in OAM , which copies over all the partner app details from osso to OAM 11g , run_ua.sh is the script name which will ask you to input the Policies.properties from SSO $OH/sso/config folder of osso 10g & other variables like db password . Some pointers Upgrading oso to Oam 11g , by default enables the coexistence mode on the OAM Server Front-end the OAM server with the same Load Balancer that is the front end of the OSSO 10g servers. Now, OAM and OSSO 10g servers are working in a co-exist mode.   I thought I would be a ball of intimated nerves when Kevin gladly agreed to speak with me on the podcast this past weekend.  After all, he is Kevin Kline of SQL in a Nutshell fame! As it turned out,  we had a comfortable and enlightening conversation on Apple MacBooks (is that what they are called?), our beginnings in the indistry, the Deep South, health care intiatives and 286′s. I almost pulled the plug when Kevin started down the Oracle path though, and for a moment he looked at me as if I was serious. As always on this podcast, it is all in good fun. The picture is of Kevin and I ( my shirt is mauve not pink by the way) at the after party for SQL Saturday 151 in Orlando, FL where he also did a Pre-Con to a sold out crowd of enthusiastic DBAs. I know they were enthusiastic even though I was not there because one of the attendees was a friend of mine who went on and on and on about the content, kind of like I am doing here.  So I will just stop that and let you proceed to listen.   If you want to send an email to a contact or several contacts, you might want to keep some of the recipient email addresses private using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) Field. Here’s how to do it in Outlook 2010. It’s not enabled by default, but adding it as a field for all future emails is a simple process. Launch Outlook and under the Home tab click on the New E-mail button. When the new mail window opens click on the Options tab and in the Show Fields column select Bcc. The Bcc field will appear and you can then put the contacts in there who you want to receive the mail secretly or don’t want to show a certain email address. He started with a brief introduction to the new MSDN subscriptions, the different versions of Visual Studio, and the full circle of application and solution integration for the new Team Foundation Server. I like the new structure of the MSDN subscriptions and the new options the Team Foundation Server offers! Quent continued his presentation with excellent information and demos of the Architecture Tools, focusing on Architecture Explorer and UML. • How to Use USER_DEFINED Activity in OWB Process Flow

  Process Flow is a very important component of Oracle Warehouse Builder. With Process Flow, we can create and control the ETL process by setting all kinds of activities in a well-constructed flow. In Oracle Warehouse Builder 11gR2, there are 28 kinds of activities, which fall into three categories: Control activities, OWB specific activities and Utility activities. For more information about Process Flow activities, please refer to OWB online doc. Most of those activities are pre-defined for some specific use. For example, the Mapping activity allows execution an OWB mapping in Process Flow and the FTP activity allows an interaction between the local host and a remote FTP server. Besides those activities for specific purposes, the User Defined activity enables you to incorporate into a Process Flow an activity that is not defined within Warehouse Builder. So the User Defined activity brings flexibility and extensibility to Process Flow. In this article, we will take an amazing tour of using the User Defined activity. Let's start. Enable execution of User Defined activity Let's start this section from creating a very simple Process Flow, which contains a Start activity, a User Defined activity and an End Success activity. Leave all parameters of activity USER_DEFINED unchanged except that we enter /tmp/test.sh into the Value column of the COMMAND parameter. Then let's create the shell script test.sh in /tmp directory. Here is the content of /tmp/test.sh (this article is demonstrating a scenario in Linux system, and /tmp/test.sh is a Bash shell script): echo Hello World! > /tmp/test.txt Note: don't forget to grant the execution privilege on /tmp/test.sh to OS Oracle user. For simplicity, we just use the following command. chmod +x /tmp/test.sh OK, it's so simple that we’ve almost done it. Now deploy the Process Flow and run it. For a newly installed OWB, we will come across an error saying "RPE-02248: For security reasons, activity operator Shell has been disabled by the DBA". See below. That's because, by default, the User Defined activity is DISABLED. Configuration about this can be found in <ORACLE_HOME>/owb/bin/admin/Runtime.properties: property.RuntimePlatform.0.NativeExecution.Shell.security_constraint=DISABLED The property can be set to three different values: NATIVE_JAVA, SCHEDULER and DISBALED. Where NATIVE_JAVA uses the Java 'Runtime.exec' interface, SCHEDULER uses a DBMS Scheduler external job submitted by the Control Center repository owner which is executed by the default operating system user configured by the DBA. DISABLED prevents execution via these operators. We enable the execution of User Defined activity by setting: property.RuntimePlatform.0.NativeExecution.Shell.security_constraint= NATIVE_JAVA Restart the Control Center service for the change of setting to take effect. cd <ORACLE_HOME>/owb/rtp/sql sqlplus OWBSYS/<password of OWBSYS> @stop_service.sql sqlplus OWBSYS/<password of OWBSYS> @start_service.sql And then run the Process Flow again. We will see that the Process Flow completes successfully. The execution of /tmp/test.sh successfully generated a file /tmp/test.txt, containing the line Hello World!. Pass parameters to User Defined Activity The Process Flow created in the above section has a drawback: the User Defined activity doesn't accept any information from OWB nor does it give any meaningful results back to OWB. That's to say, it lacks interaction. Maybe, sometimes such a Process Flow can fulfill the business requirement. But for most of the time, we need to get the User Defined activity executed according to some information prior to that step. In this section, we will see how to pass parameters to the User Defined activity and pass them into the to-be-executed shell script. First, let's see how to pass parameters to the script. The User Defined activity has an input parameter named PARAMETER_LIST. This is a list of parameters that will be passed to the command. Parameters are separated from one another by a token. The token is taken as the first character on the PARAMETER_LIST string, and the string must also end in that token. Warehouse Builder recommends the '?' character, but any character can be used. For example, to pass 'abc,' 'def,' and 'ghi' you can use the following equivalent: ?abc?def?ghi? or !abc!def!ghi! or |abc|def|ghi| If the token character or '\' needs to be included as part of the parameter, then it must be preceded with '\'. For example '\\'. If '\' is the token character, then '/' becomes the escape character. Let's configure the PARAMETER_LIST parameter as below: And modify the shell script /tmp/test.sh as below: echo $1 is saying hello to $2! > /tmp/test.txt Re-deploy the Process Flow and run it. We will see that the generated /tmp/test.txt contains the following line: Bob is saying hello to Alice! In the example above, the parameters passed into the shell script are static. This case is not so useful because: instead of passing parameters, we can directly write the value of the parameters in the shell script. To make the case more meaningful, we can pass two dynamic parameters, that are obtained from the previous activity, to the shell script. Prepare the Process Flow as below: The Mapping activity MAPPING_1 has two output parameters: FROM_USER, TO_USER. The User Defined activity has two input parameters: FROM_USER, TO_USER. All the four parameters are of String type. Additionally, the Process Flow has two string variables: VARIABLE_FOR_FROM_USER, VARIABLE_FOR_TO_USER. Through VARIABLE_FOR_FROM_USER, the input parameter FROM_USER of USER_DEFINED gets value from output parameter FROM_USER of MAPPING_1. We achieve this by binding both parameters to VARIABLE_FOR_FROM_USER. See the two figures below. In the same way, through VARIABLE_FOR_TO_USER, the input parameter TO_USER of USER_DEFINED gets value from output parameter TO_USER of MAPPING_1. Also, we need to change the PARAMETER_LIST of the User Defined activity like below: Now, the shell script is getting input from the Mapping activity dynamically. Deploy the Process Flow and all of its necessary dependees then run the Process Flow. We see that the generated /tmp/test.txt contains the following line: USER B is saying hello to USER A! 'USER B' and 'USER A' are two outputs of the Mapping execution. Write the shell script within Oracle Warehouse Builder In the previous section, the shell script is located in the /tmp directory. But sometimes, when the shell script is small, or for the sake of maintaining consistency, you may want to keep the shell script inside Oracle Warehouse Builder. We can achieve this by configuring these three parameters of a User Defined activity properly: COMMAND: Set the path of interpreter, by which the shell script will be interpreted. PARAMETER_LIST: Set it blank. SCRIPT: Enter the shell script content. Note that in Linux the shell script content is passed into the interpreter as standard input at runtime. About how to actually pass parameters to the shell script, we can utilize variable substitutions. As in the following figure, ${FROM_USER} will be replaced by the value of the FROM_USER input parameter of the User Defined activity. So will the ${TO_USER} symbol. Besides the custom substitution variables, OWB also provide some system pre-defined substitution variables. You can refer to the online document for that. Deploy the Process Flow and run it. We see that the generated /tmp/test.txt contains the following line: USER B is saying hello to USER A! Leverage the return value of User Defined activity All of the previous sections are connecting the User Defined activity to END_SUCCESS with an unconditional transition. But what should we do if we want different subsequent activities for different shell script execution results? 1.  The simplest way is to add three simple-conditioned out-going transitions for the User Defined activity just like the figure below. In the figure, to simplify the scenario, we connect the User Defined activity to three End activities. Basically, if the shell script ends successfully, the whole Process Flow will end at END_SUCCESS, otherwise, the whole Process Flow will end at END_ERROR (in our case, ending at END_WARNING seldom happens). In the real world, we can add more complex and meaningful subsequent business logic. 2.  Or we can utilize complex conditions to work with different results of the User Defined activity. Previously, in our script, we only have this line: echo ${FROM_USER} is saying hello to ${TO_USER}! > /tmp/test.txt We can add more logic in it and return different values accordingly. echo ${FROM_USER} is saying hello to ${TO_USER}! > /tmp/test.txt if CONDITION_1 ; then ...... exit 0 fi if CONDITION_2 ; then ...... exit 2 fi if CONDITION_3 ; then ...... exit 3 fi After that we can leverage the result by checking RESULT_CODE in condition expression of those out-going transitions. Let's suppose that we have the Process Flow as the following graph (SUB_PROCESS_n stands for more different further processes): We can set complex condition for the transition from USER_DEFINED to SUB_PROCESS_1 like this: Other transitions can be set in the same way. Note that, in our shell script, we return 0, 2 and 3, but not 1. As in Linux system, if the shell script comes across a system error like IO error, the return value will be 1. We can explicitly handle such a return value. I could not find a review of www.learnnowonline.com/learndevnow I've been doing research about places that offer .NET / ASP.NET / C# / LINQ / SQL / JQuery video training that provide excellent material for developers. Kind of like a Lynda.com for back end development. However, I have not find one place that offers quality material that is easily accessible for the user, and that is priced competitive. This is what I'm looking for: Online Video tutorials with free future updates (videos that can be accessed on any device ie: android portable devices, mac / ipad, linux machines) Printable courseware (ie PDFs so that you can take notes, print if necessary, and read in a tablet in case you don;t have internet access) labs, and easy to access code Pre/Post Assessments/Exams for each training to keep track of your progress and what you have learned/skills. (Appdev used to offer this but it was way too expensive (thousands for each training ie 1k for each. I paid about five thousand at Appdev, and now I regret that purchase), and after a few years/months the training became obsolete - outdated) I looked at learnnowonline.com/learndevnow but it seems that their courseware / text reference material can only be accessed online, and don't know if their videos work in all mobile devices, and browsers (Safari, Chrome, IE, Opera, Firefox) Also, it seems Appdev not longer exist and now is called " AppDev is now LearnNowPlus : www.learnnowonline.com/appdev That site not longer offers prices. I tried to find reviews but could not find any. Does anyone know, or can share a review about some of these type of online training service providers? • More Mobile Payments

  In the previous post I discussed the Bump Payments from PayPayl, but that's not the only innovative way to make purchases using your phone. Verizon recently announced a partnership with Danal that allows shoppers to charge online purchases to their Verizon bill. For e-commerce sites that accept this type of payment, it's a two step process. At checkout, the shopper enters their mobile number and billing zip code. Then a SMS message is sent to the mobile phone that contains a one-time code that must be entered on the e-commerce site. This two-factor authentication seems pretty secure, and no pre-registration or credit card is necessary. There's a $25 a month maximum, but I bet the limit gets raised as Verizon gets more comfortable with security. Merchants are charged a fee similar to credit card fees. Another example of mobile payments is offered by BlingNation. Customers attach a small NFC sticker to their phones that allows them to "tap" the POS device to make a payment. The NFC chip is connected to their checking account, so the transaction is treated as a debit payment. Text messages are sent to the mobile that confirm the payments so shoppers can easily verify their purchases. BlingNation is working with banks like Adirondack Trust Company and The State Bank of La Junta in Colorado. Heck, you can even send money to inmates in the Arkansas prison system using your mobile phone now that the state of Arkansas supports payments via their mobile website. Everyone is getting into the act now.
