• Doing extra initialisations on a MFC Dialog in Visual Studio C++ 2008 Pro

  How do I make extra initializations on a modal dialog before calling DoModal(); ? The whole application is created using VS wizards. I have a main Dialog (the one that is created automatically when I select new MFC Application in Visual Studio 2008 Professional). When I click a button on this dialog I want to open another dialog and set a CString value into a CEdit control. my code: ... void MainDlg::OnClickedButtonX(){ SecondDialogClass Dlg2; Dlg2.asocVar2Cedit.SetWindowTextW(L"my text"); Dlg2.DoModal(); } //asocVar2Cedit is the associeted control variable to the //CEdit control on the second Dialog (Right Click > Add Variable.. in VSC++) ... this code generates at runtime a "Debug Assertion" error in winocc...   There are lots of training methods from different vendors to learn .NET technologies (i.e. books, DVDs, online training, etc.). All of them claim the same thing: that they are the best, their content is 100% guaranteed, makes their customers professional in no time, etc. It’s confusing and sometimes frustrating as well. I especially want a training resource (i.e. a course) to provide valuable content in short time. More importantly I feel they should do their job properly so as to avoid the customer feeling they've wasted time or money. What I should do when I evaluating training methods and resources to help further software development skills? What are your training sources? Do you have any recommendations?

  I'm looking for a good profiler for vs2008 professional edition, free or reasonably priced. I've already checked previous posts and tried about 8 profilers, but most of them are too basic or too detailed. Kindly suggest something, my requirements are as follows: It can be compiled, so that its well integrated with my application. I'm not shying away from instrumenting my methods. The output should be simple, i only need call count and time taken by methods and nothing else. I am mostly concerned about things INSIDE a method, you may call it line by line profiling. I want to select a method and know which line (expression / method call) is eating most of the time.

  Hypothetical: Let's say you are writing complex queries to a database and it is very important that the data you extracted is the correct result set (e.g., that you didn't mess up a JOIN by not using all the correct keys, and all the other things that can go wrong, et cetera). What would you rather use to do this? Would you write the query using Microsoft Access and its Design View, or would you write it in native SQL using a SQL IDE? • Waiting for a background operation to complete

  I have been suffering from the all too common 'Waiting for a background operation to complete...' message in Visual Studio 2012 (Professional) for a while now but it has been fairly sporadic. Lately though, I am really struggling to use Visual Studio as pretty much whenever i try and do anything with any Razor views (mostly clicking to move the cursor) visual studio hangs and the above message appears for about a minute at a time. (If when its finished doing stuff i then click in the view again, the process repeats, and repeats, and repeats.....) I have searched high and low, and read loads of articles regarding this and peoples suggestions and tried changing indentation settings, resetting settings, etc but none have worked. Has anyone come across something else that may work as this is seriously impeding my ability to use visual studio and sadly provoking much cursing.

• What's the silliest programming mistake you've ever done? [closed]

  Despite not being a professional programmer, i use python or c to accomplish simple tasks. Once I needed a nasty equation to use with various data for physics lab. I thought that it would take a few hours if i used some mechanic calculator. Then i've written a python script to make things easier but something was wrong. After finding my mistakes one of which was forgetting to put ":", i realized that it had already took 2-3 hours, not to mention inventing satanic arithmetic techniques since i thought the errors was caused by my math :) Sometimes when you don't see it, you don't see it! Now i can find the syntax errors without thinking for a moment :) Any similar annoying mistakes that you've experienced?

• Is there a program devleopment environment similar to visual studios?

  I'm getting really tired of working against click-once and I'm wondering if there's a better alternative. I'm looking for a programming environment that preferably does not depend on the .net framework. I'm not sure how much .net does for me exactly (though I have some idea) but I'd like to make my programs as independent of downloading a microsoft or other framework. I often think of professional programs like itunes, gimp or firefox that don't require someone to have a .net framwork. I'd also like to have these programs work on windows mac and linux. Any suggestions?

• New Site : Showing first time visitors what the site offers

  The site I'm working on, is almost completed. I have a Demo page created as well, where people can try out the product. However for first time visitors to understand what service the site actually provides I'm brainstorming with the following ideas. Since a lot of folks have been through this a number of time, would like to get some advice on what they use and what generally works. Here is what I came up with - 1.) Plain Slideshow, showing various features. (Using jQquery, hence figuring out a simple BUT professional looking plugin).Simplest to implement. 2.) Flash - Will have to hire someone. 3.) • Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

  I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools? • AIR app still running when the iphone is blocked?

  I just made a simple game with flash professional 6.0 and adobe AIR sdk 3.4 for iPhone. The problem is this: when I lock the iphone pressing the power button, the screen switches off as usual, but the music of the game still sounds. If I exit the game pressing the home button it exits fine. Is only when locking the phone with the app opened. Also, I opted-out of multitasking for my app, so if I close my app with the home button and I reload it, it loads the main menu. Anyone knows how can I solve this?

• Server RAID 5 failed...all I have left is my compiled website

  Yesterday, 2 of the 3 drives in my dev server's RAID 5 decided to die on me (with no warning). I've come to grips with the fact that my data is most likely lost unless I shell out some major bucks for professional data-resortoration. People, don't be an idiot like me and treat your RAID as a data backup! Luckily I published the site about 4 hours before my files went bye-bye. Is there any way to run some [magical] program to restore my compiled site to their original files? Also: I develop on one machine with the files stored on the server...is there some visual studio 2010 web cache on my local machine (the one that didn't crash) that I may be able to use?

  Hi I'm currently using yahoo map service to display a static image of a location with the latitude and longitude that I suppiled, and this work fine. But I was just wondering if it possible to send an url request to the service that will return an image with multiple markers on the image? (ie. more than one locations marked). • Need a Concatenating VBA code to prevent memory issue workaround

  My set up: Have 50,000 rows of data. ( My row count will increase in the future. So might as well say I have a full worksheet of 64000+ rows.) All Data is TEXT, no formulas, etc. Column A is open Columns B thru AC contain the Data that needs to be concatenated The Data in the rows once concatenated to Column A will contain 60,000 digits or 6kb in file size. After additional maniuplation each cell will become a file. I have tried concatenating in Excel and I run into memory issues. The memory issue is when I Select and fill down the concatenating function into the worksheet. It crashes at the 8200 +/-row. My system is 2gb of ram, windows xp professional and Excel 2003. Have 4GB of disk space Hoping to find a VBA code that will conserve memory, and not crash like it does in excel. Thank you

  In an ActionScript 2 project I can create a new MovieClip, right-click on it on the library and select "Component Definition" to add parameters that can be referenced inside the MovieClip. This parameters can be easily changed in the MovieClips's properties. Now, I'm working on an ActionScript 3 project but haven't been able to figure out a way to obtain the values passed in those parameters. I defined a parameter named "textToDisplay" but when I write the following in the Actions for the first frame I get an error: trace(textToDisplay); This is the error: 1120: Access of undefined property textToDisplay.   My company writes mostly .NET code, I work in a professional, 'business casual' environment. Both of these things seemed pretty ubiquitous across the corporate software world, however I recently visited a few companies that use PHP/Ruby and nearly all their devs had facial piercings/visible tattoos, etc. and their offices had no apparent dress code. This might sound funny, but it made me wonder, is there any correlation between specific technology and office culture? For example, have you ever had to wear a suit to a programming job, and if so what technology did you use?
