  • Is there anything inherently wrong with long variable/method names in Java?

    I know this is probably is a question of personal opinion, but I want to know what's standard practice and what would be frowned upon. One of my profs in university always seems to make his variable and method names as short as possible (getAmt() instead of getAmount) for instance. I have no objection to this, but personally, I prefer to have mine a little longer if it adds descriptiveness so the person reading it won't have to check or refer to documentation. For instance, we made a method that given a list of players, returns the player who scored the most goals. I made the method getPlayerWithMostGoals(), is this wrong? I toiled over choosing a way to make it shorter for awhile, but then I thought "why?". It gets the point across clearly and Eclipse makes it easy to autocomplete it when I type. I'm just wondering if the short variable names are a piece of the past due to needing everything to be as small as possible to be efficient. Is this still a requirement?

  • C++ - Print Out Objects From Set

    If I have a C++ set, declaration set personList; with iterator, set::const_iterator location; how can I print out the contents of the set? They are all person objects, and I have overridden the operator<< for Person. The line that errors is: cout << location and it's in a basic for loop. Netbeans gives the following error: proj.cpp:78: error: no match for ‘operator<<’ in ‘std::cout << location’ so it looks like it wants an override for the iterator's <<. Basically, I am taking objects that used to be stored in an array format, but are now in a set. What is the equivalent to cout << array[i] for sets?

    Hello everyone, What I'm looking to do is to sorta a Java List or Map in the order the items are in a XML File. For Example I have a list of function names as so: functionOne functionThree functionTwo The XML File looks like this: <xml> <function>functionOne</function> <function>functionTwo</function> <function>functionThree</function> </xml> So I would like to sort the list so the function names are as so: functionOne functionTwo functionThree Now Im trying to do this for Variables as well, so there are around 500+ unique 'items'. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about doing this? Now for the file that determines that sort order doesn't have to be XML it just what I use the most, it can be anything that can get the job done. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • Javascript function with PHP throwing a "Illegally Formed XML Syntax" error

    I'm trying to learn some javascript and i'm having trouble figuring out why my code is incorrect (i'm sure i'm doing something wrong lol), but anyways I am trying to create a login page so that when the form is submitted javascript will call a function that checks if the login is in a mysql database and then checks the validity of the password for the user if they exist. however I am getting an error (Illegally Formed XML Syntax) i cannot resolve.   • Alter top and bottom borders of Dojo/Dijit Dialog and ContentPane

    I have a Dojo/Dijit Dialog that contains a FORM. There is a top border between the title bar and the content, and a bottom border below the content. Both are about 19 or 20 pixels high and colored #eeeeee. I can't find these borders in the CSS anywhere -- actually, neither can the IE Developer Toolbar -- they just don't seem to exist as elements. I suspect that Dijit is adding these programatically. Is there any way to just remove these borders? I just want my content to consume all of the dialog area below the title bar. TIA

  • DrawRect on the iPhone vs. the Mac

    I am an experienced iPhone dev beginning to work on my first Mac app. One thing that is really throwing me off is the differences between UIView and NSView. It seems that I cannot set the background color of a NSView via interface builder as I can with a UIView. It also seems that I cannot do it by simply sending a setBackgroundColor: message to it. All the examples I have seen are overriding drawRect: in a subclass of NSView. Is that really the only way to do it? What is the conceptual difference here, and why is it this way? NOTE: I am only trying to set the background color to the default grey.

    Trying to understand S3...How do you limit access to a file you upload to S3? For example, from a web application, each user has files they can upload, but how do you limit access so only that user has access to that file? It seems like the query string authentication requires an expiration date and that won't work for me, is there another way to do this?

  • How do I pull `static final` constants from a Java class into a Clojure namespace?

    I am trying to wrap a Java library with a Clojure binding. One particular class in the Java library defines a bunch of static final constants, for example: class Foo { public static final int BAR = 0; public static final int SOME_CONSTANT = 1; ... } I had a thought that I might be able to inspect the class and pull these constants into my Clojure namespace without explicitly def-ing each one. For example, instead of explicitly wiring it up like this: (def *foo-bar* Foo/BAR) (def *foo-some-constant* Foo/SOME_CONSTANT) I'd be able to inspect the Foo class and dynamically wire up *foo-bar* and *foo-some-constant* in my Clojure namespace when the module is loaded. I see two reasons for doing this: A) Automatically pull in new constants as they are added to the Foo class. In other words, I wouldn't have to modify my Clojure wrapper in the case that the Java interface added a new constant. B) I can guarantee the constants follow a more Clojure-esque naming convention I'm not really sold on doing this, but it seems like a good question to ask to expand my knowledge of Clojure/Java interop.     Hi, I've a JEditorPane inside a JDialog. I'm loading a web page when this JDialog is loading. This web page is larger then the JEditorPane size. So I want to display a certain position in the web page by default. For example, I've a 175x200 size jdialog and JEditorPane. I want to display the web page sontent around 150 pixels down. Is there any solutions for this? Or is there any other component which I can used to display web pages and can move to a certain position of the web page at loading time.

  • What's a good FOSS java servlet session replication solution

    I work on a very high volume public website running on Tomcat 5.5. Currently we require stickiness to a particular server in order to maintain session. I'd like to start replicating session, but have had trouble finding a good FOSS solution. I've written my own Manager (using memcached as the store) but am having trouble dealing with race conditions if more than one server is handling the requests for the same user. Is there a solution out there I should be looking at? I'm looking for not just something that works as a fallback if stickiness fails, but that would work if user requests are regularly spread to multiple servers.

    to read a child node content i use : MYDATA = xhr.responseXML.getElementsByTagName("MenuItem") [INDEX].getElementsByTagName("PageContent")[0].childNodes[0].nodeValue; sometimes when the childnode data contains an HTML tag (eg b or br tags, because they have the <), i have problems since they are counted like xml tags (like childnodes). my question is how to get the entire data from a child node even if it contains other html tags exp : MenuItem MenuText menu b text b MenuText MenuItem would return "menu" !!! but i want it to return :"menu text" thank you guys, and happy new year

I have some code with a lot of different types of objects for which I have defined constructor functions. Is it good practice to put these inside the namespace as well?   • Why does PDO print my password when the connection fails?

    I have a simple website where I establish a connection to a Mysql server using PDO. $dbh = new PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=DB;port=3306', 'USER', 'SECRET',array(PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND => "SET NAMES utf8")); I had some traffic on my site and the servers connection limit was reached, and the website throw this error, with my PLAIN password in it! Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'PDOException' with message 'SQLSTATE[08004] [1040] Too many connections' in /home/premiumize-me/html/index.php:64 Stack trace: #0 /home/premiumize-me/html/index.php(64): PDO-__construct('mysql:host=loca...', 'USER', 'SECRET', Array) #1 {main} thrown in /home/premiumize-me/html/index.php on line 64 Ironically I switched to PDO for security reasons, this really shocked me. Because this exact error is something you can provoke very easily on most sites using simple http flooding. I now wrapped my conenction into a try/catch clause, but still. I think this is catastrophic! So I am new to PDO and my questino is: What do I have to consider to be safe! How to I establish a connection in a secure way? Are there other known security holes like this one that I have to be aware of?
