• EC2 hostname ubuntu and ejabberd

  I have questions related to the host name in Ubuntu EC2 instances. I have a IPS elastics for hosts that want to be seen from the internet and I have pointed out in the DNS entries with the computer name to those ips. For example, for elastic IP 11.11.11.11 DNS I added my computer name www.example.com. But I also want to rename the machines which they have, because it is a parameter of the service running on them (ejabberd server). EC2 instances are restarted when changing the host name, and seen on the client requesting dhcp hostname to dhcp Amazon. My question is ... What is the safest method to change the hostname: dhcp client modify, insert the command in rc.local, etc. ..? Could I have a problem with the internal resolution of traffic between EC2 instances? thanks

• Relation between Apache and DNS configuration

  I configured my DNS (bind9) to accept every subdomain, using a wildcarded 'A' record : *.mydomain.tld. IN A xx.xx.xx.xx I configured Apache to serve some specific subdomains using virtual hosts : <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName sub1.mydomain.tld ServerAlias sub1.mydomain.tld JkMount / sub1JK JkMount /* sub1JK </VirtualHost> when I ping from a remote computer on a subdomain configured in apache I get a response. When I ping on a subdomain that is not configured in apache, the host is not found. I don't understand why apache configuration would affect DNS resolution like this? I would appreciate any information that helps me understand this. Thanks a lot.

• How to distill / rasterize a PDF in Linux

  We have a printer at our office that prints PDF files from a USB stick. It prints most files okay, but it has problems with some, especially ones generated with Latex. Some PDFs it simply refuses to print, some PDFs it prints with courier-type font, and some it prints fine except for equations. I'm looking for a way to "distill" PDFs into a dead-sure format to print. Either by simplifying / normalizing the PDF to the point that any renderer will render it correctly, or by simply making each page a 600dpi raster image in the PDF. (I could split the PDF into individual raster images and combine them manually, but I want something scriptable.) The output file size doesn't matter, as long as it's sure to print, has A4 paper size (or the original) and 300~600dpi resolution.

• How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

  I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

  I try to create a domain-based namespace but when I hit "next" on the "choose type wizard page" I get the message: The namespace cannot be queried. The RPC server is unavailable. I found one article regarding this problem, and indeed the DNS resolution of the DomainDNSName was flawed. But although I fixed this DNS issue, I still get this message. A stand-alone namespace can be created. Any ideas how to solve this problem? Is it possible that this is related to the fact that I'm using a single-lable domain name?

• "Input not Supported" on external monitor

  when it rains, it pours! Im helping a friend with his Dell Inspiron 1520. The hdd crashed and and top of that, the screen is cracked. I've replaced the hdd (SATA-5400), but the lcd replacement is only comin in a months time. I've tried to: hook the laptop up to an Acer 18.5" lcd monitor via VGA, boot up into Windows 7 installer, get to the Step-1 screen, Switch to external display (Function-F8) ...and get the "Input not supported" message on the Acer lcd. I know that this is a resolution problem, but cant for the life of me figure out how to solve this. I've also tried, hooking it up to my TV via Composite cables (got a VGA-Composite adaptor). Please could someone advise me what to do? -Thank u!

• Windows 7/Outlook 2010 cut off controls on form windows

  I am running windows 7 with multiple monitors. 2 at 1920 x 1200 and 1 at 1600x900 resolution. Controls are cut off and I cannot view the entire content of the window. As far as I can tell I only have the issue with Outlook 2010, it may be present in other applications but I haven't noticed it. For example to get to the more settings button I have to use tab and then click enter. The more settings button is never visible. I have used applications that allow you to force windows to be resizable, however the anchoring is such that it remains cut off. This has been present over multiple clean installs on the system. My DPI is set to 100% unlike this issue.

  I have CentOS installed on my laptop. I hooked up my TV via VGA and it works, just not as I'd like it to. The left side (on the tv) is cut off, like the image is justified too far left. I want it to be centered, but I also want to use a different resolution. You see, I use a netbook, and thus my laptop screen is tiny, meaning some things cant fit in the same window without scrolling. I want my TV to fix that for me.

  Can I connect to a RD session that has been started (and abandoned) from a remote machine using xrdp? Also I'd like to be able to do the exact opposite: to remotely login to a session that has been initiated locally. I'm trying to get as close as possible to how Windows RS behaves. (Which also includes that the session would use my terminal machine/monitor resolution. I wasn't able to achieve that using VNC.) Suggestions to a better alternative to xrdp are welcome please. I don't know Linux too much.

• Windows 7 changes desktop icon location when switching from External Monitor to Internal Monitor (laptop)

  I have a Windows 7 Laptop, and lately its been acting really weird with my 1080p Monitor. When I get home from school, Ill plug my screen in, and close my laptop lid (which makes the laptop treat the Monitor as the primary and only screen). However it will move my desktop icons! This also happens when I remove / unplug the screen, as shown in the pictures. I hate this, as Im the kinda person who's use to every icon being in a set spot, and so am use to their location. Its a massive hassle to try and move the icons back to their original spot. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? • Bad HD video deinterlacing processing

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit with Unity. My system configuration is: CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz) RAM: 8192 Mb DDR2 Kingston Video: Palit GeForce GTX 260 216 SP, and my screen resolution is 1680x1050. I also have Window 7 Ulitimate installed, and I can see the same files in Media Player Classic without any horizontal lines. I've installed vdpau driver, NVIDIA drivers 304.51, and MPlayer 2 (within SMPlayer). I've disabled "Sync to VBlank" option in CCSM (because in other way, by default, MPlayer process use about 50-60 percents of my processor load), tried to swich between different deinterlace options in SMPlayer, used "-vc ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau" (without quotes) parameters for MPlayer, switched to "Ubuntu 2D", but, finally, have no results. Any suggestions? How must I to set up MPlayer?

  Hi i was trying to schedule one application in Windows 2008 server. and i can see that the schedeule is showing running in the task Scheduler, but nothing is happening(i mean the program that i scheduled is not working) and the schedule is not stopping also(i specificaly choose if the schedule runing more than 3 hours stop it automatically) i went through several links and im sure im scheduling it in proper way. is anybody facing this problem on Windows 2008? any resolution. • Any way I can correct DNS spoofing against our domain

  This morning I found out that our domain and subdomains have been poisoned on the 4.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 DNS servers along with others I think, though I have not confirmed others yet. Using OpenDNS resolution works correctly. I have updated our local DNS servers and cleared their cache which has fixed things internally. The issue is that the domain is public facing and customers are having problems. We are the authoritative DNS server for the domain and all that is under our control. What I don't know how to do is fix the name servers out of our control. Is there something we can do on our end? At the moment the only workaround I can think of is to ask customers to change their DNS to OpenDNS which is not very practical. The other workaround would be to change our TLD, which is less practical.

• Samsung TV connected to PC for Powerpoint

  I have a 42" Samsung LCD TV connected to a Dell computer with a PCI Radion 9000 via a 35' VGA cable. It's purpose is to run power point presentations over the TV for our retail store. I have tried every combination of button clicking on the video card options, and everything on the TV, and I still get black bars on the top and bottom of the image. It looks like I am watching a old wide screen movie on a full screen TV. The TV's suggested resolution is 1024x768, and that is what the output is set to. I have tried this with a nVida PCI card as well with the same results.

We're being asked by a customer to enter into an agreement regarding technical support for a software application that we're selling. Basically, I'm interested in the typical turn-around time (i.e. time to respond, time to resolution) based on the severity of the issue. And also, I'm interested in the financial structure of such agreements: i.e. charge/incident, bundle with unlimited incidents/customer etc. Any information or suggestions of where to find such information (even examples of other software vendors websites) would be greatly appreciated!

  I am aware of what HAProxy does, but what if my HAproxy goes down? Or what if my DNS servers go down? Yes, dns is less the problem. However dns only solves to an IP and an IP is announced via BGP to be routed over some router. What if that router goes down? Of course if I have complicated application servers that are likely to fail HAProxy can significantly improve uptime. But my application isnt. In fact my application may very well just be delivering a small static html file via HTTP. Basically if any user anywhere types in MYDOMAIN.COM, I want the user to get SOMETHING on the screen other than a timeout or DNS resolution error. How can I do that? The point of entry is difficult. The so called "initial closure mechanism".

• Conflicts with MS Office temporary files when using Offline Folders on Vista

  We are using Offline Folders feature of Windows Vista to make files on network shares available when out of office. Mostly it is working, but every time I do a sync I get a lot of such errors: D500E7B8.tmp - A file was deleted on this computer and changed on the server while this computer was offline. There are hundreds of them. I always select all of them and choose resolution "Delete from both locations". But what is causing this and how can I avoid it? I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save.   Hi I have an project in FCE which was recorded in MPEG-4 video in 1280 x 960 (1,4MB/s) and whenever I import those mov files to FCE thez show just fine. but when i add the clips to the timeline (sequence) the quality is cropped - instead of HD i can onlz export the timeline with quicktime conversion and a resolution of 720 x 480. can anybody help me out and tell me how i can export the timeline in full HD quality (as the raw material itself is)? tried the quick setup and exporting as divx and AIC which doesnt reallz work. the actual video size is HD, but qualitz of the video is like SD...

• Do I use the FV function in Excel correctly?

  My task: Create a table: Calculate what the revenues of e-trading will be after five years at 15 percent interest rate if we now have 15 000 EUR. Use the FV function from the Financial Group in Excel. My resolution: =FV( 15%; 5; 0; -15000). My question: Is it correct? I know the task lacks information whether the interest rate is per month or per year. I calculate it as 'per year'. My question is orientated more on the usage of the FV function. I, for example, do not understand why '-15000' and not '15000'. Also why the third parameter has to be 0? Maybe I do it wrong. Please help me solve it! Thanks in advance.

• Explorer.exe - No such interface supported and other issues

  The problem started when I uninstalled my ATI graphics driver and i used a driver cleaner. After i restarted win7 and it got to POST the screen just went completely blank. So i Used system restore from the repair menu to get back on. I found out that if I ran chkdsk the display just goes black after restart on startup and i have to use system restore to get back on windows7 not sure why this is. When i right click desktop and choose 'Screen Resolution' it says No such interface supported. Also when I click items such as device manager in the windows explorer it does not do anything. I have tried re-registering the DLLS but that did not do anything.

  Hi all, I was wandering if there is a Linux program that can limit data throughput of a pipe - in actual bytes per second?. From what I gather, applicable for the purposes would be bfr, however, it has been removed from Debian (Removal candidate: bfr) cpipe, however, it seems the lowest resolution it will support is kB/s, meaning that buffer writes can still reach MB/s ([SOLVED] Is there a program to limit terminal pipe speed? - Page 2 - Ubuntu Forums) What I'd want is to be able to specify something like cat example.txt | ratelimit -Bps 100 > /dev/ttyUSB0 ... and actually have a single byte from example.txt sent each 1/100 = 0.01 sec (or 10 ms) to 'output'.. • Virtual Box - not filling entire screen

  I am new to VirtualBox and am trying to set up an instance of Windows 7 64. I have the virtual machine instance running with Windows 7 now installed, but it only fills up a small portion of my screen. Even when I go full screen, the window stays the same size and the rest of the screen is filled with gray space. I have installed VirtualBox Guest Additions, which allowed me to go from a resolution of 800x600 to 1024x768, but this still isn't satisfactory as my laptop display is 1600x900. Any help on this would be most appreciated. Thanks.

• How do I make YouTube videos fill up an entire screen when using dual monitors?

  I am using a dual monitor setup on Ubuntu 9.10 using the TwinView configuration in NIVIDA X Server Settings. My total resolution is 2960x1050 pixels, and my individual monitors are 1680x1050 (primary) and 1280x1024 (secondary). When going into fullscreen mode on any video on YouTube, I only see a cropped version of the video on my primary display as seen below. This does not occur on any other video sharing website - they properly make the video to fill the entire screen on my primary monitor. To my knowledge this problem only happens on YouTube.
