  I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. the server is not using much memory: Mem: 16777216k total, 1204040k used, 15573176k free My.conf settings: query_cache_size = 128M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 512M open-files-limit = 8192 table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu.   We have a Microsoft Failover Cluster with dynamic disks managed by Veritas Storage Foundation. Today the sysadmins added a new disk for SQL Server but the cluster size on the volume was wrong, so I issued a quick format to change it. The disk volume failed, the SQL Server group failed as well and the cluster became unresponsive. After some minutes I managed to fail over to a passive node. The SAN admins say it's my fault because I shouldn't have formatted the disk from the Windows format applet, but I should have used Veritas Enterprise Administrator instead. Can a format operation bring offline a whole cluster group this way? Relevant error messages: From the eventlog: The cluster resource host subsystem (RHS) stopped unexpectedly. An attempt will be made to restart it. This is usually due to a problem in a resource DLL. Please determine which resource DLL is causing the issue and report the problem to the resource vendor. From the cluster.log ERR [RCM] rcm::RcmResControl::DoResourceControl: ERROR_RESOURCE_CALL_TIMED_OUT(5910)' because of 'Control(STORAGE_GET_DISK_INFO_EX) to resource 'NameOfTheDiskGroup' timed out.'   Hi, I have a productdatabase that contains products, parts and labels for each part based on langcodes. The problem I'm having and haven't got around is a huge amount of resource used to get the different datasets and merging them into a dict to suit my needs. The products in the database are based on a number of parts that is of a certain type (ie. color, size). And each part has a label for each language. I created 4 different models for this. Products, ProductParts, ProductPartTypes and ProductPartLabels. I've narrowed it down to about 10 lines of code that seams to generate the problem. As of currently I have 3 Products, 3 Types, 3 parts for each type, and 2 languages. The reason I need the some what complex dict is that I want to display all data for a product with it's default parts and show a selector for the optional one. What will the result be when it's 30 products with 100 parts. Is one solution to create a scheduled task to cache it in the memcache every hour? It this efficient? It doesn't feel right, so I am looking for constructive criticism and warnings for pitfalls and suggestions of what I can do. I have a database with business objects. I need to access properties of parent objects. I need to maintain some sort of state through business objects. If you look at the classes, I don't think that the access modifiers are right. I don't think its structured very well. Most of the relationships are modelled with public properties. SubAccount.Account.User.ID <-- all of those are public.. Is there a better way to model a relationship between classes than this so its not so "public"?   I'm working on a website with typical CRUD web usage pattern: similar to blogs or forums where users create/update contents and other users read the content. Seems like it's OK to set the database's isolation level to "Read Uncommitted" (dirty reads) in this case. My understanding of the general drawback of "Read Uncommitted" is that a reader may read uncommitted data that will later be rollbacked. In a CRUD blog/forum usage pattern, will there ever be any rollback? And even if there is, is there any major problem with reading uncommitted data? Right now I'm not using any replication, but in the future if I want to use replication (row-based, not statement-based) will a "Read Uncommitted" isolation level prevent me from doing so? What do you think? Has anyone tried using "Read Uncommitted" on their RDBMS?

However, the time it takes to respond is often about 4.5 seconds, though it varies a lot.   I recently decided to crawl over the indexes on one of our most heavily used databases to see which were suboptimal. I generated the built-in Index Usage Statistics report from SSMS, and it's showing me a great deal of information that I'm unsure how to understand. I found an article at Carpe Datum about the report, but it doesn't tell me much more than I could assume from the column titles. In particular, the report differentiates between User activity and system activity, and I'm unsure what qualifies as each type of activity. I assume that any query that uses a given index increases the '# of user X' columns. But what increases the system columns? building statistics? Is there anything that depends on the user or role(s) of a user that's running the query?

• g++ linker error--typeinfo, but not vtable

  I know the standard answer for a linker error about missing typeinfo usually also involves vtable and some virtual function that I forgot to actually define. I'm fairly certain that's not the situation this time. Here's the error: UI.o: In function boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::Widgets::WidgetSet>::shared_ptr<Graphics::Resource::GroupByState>(boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::Resource::GroupByState> const&, boost::detail::dynamic_cast_tag)': UI.cpp:(.text._ZN5boost10shared_ptrIN8Graphics7Widgets9WidgetSetEEC1INS1_8Resource12GroupByStateEEERKNS0_IT_EENS_6detail16dynamic_cast_tagE[boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::Widgets::WidgetSet>::shared_ptr<Graphics::Resource::GroupByState>(boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::Resource::GroupByState> const&, boost::detail::dynamic_cast_tag)]+0x30): undefined reference totypeinfo for Graphics::Widgets::WidgetSet' Running c++filt on the obnoxious mangled name shows that it actually is looking at .boost::shared_ptr::shared_ptr(boost::shared_ptr const&, boost::detail::dynamic_cast_tag) The inheritance hierarchy looks something like class AbstractGroup { typedef boost::shared_ptr<AbstractGroup> Ptr; ... }; class WidgetSet : public AbstractGroup { typedef boost::shared_ptr<WidgetSet> Ptr; ... }; class GroupByState : public AbstractGroup { ... }; Then there's this: class UI : public GroupByState { ... void LoadWidgets( GroupByState::Ptr resource ); }; Then the original implementation: void UI::LoadWidgets( GroupByState::Ptr resource ) { WidgetSet::Ptr tmp( boost::dynamic_pointer_cast< WidgetSet >(resource) ); if( tmp ) { ... } } Stupid error on my part (trying to cast to a sibling class with a shared parent), even if the error is kind of cryptic. Changing to this: void UI::LoadWidgets( AbstractGroup::Ptr resource ) { WidgetSet::Ptr tmp( boost::dynamic_pointer_cast< WidgetSet >(resource) ); if( tmp ) { ... } } (which I'm fairly sure is what I actually meant to be doing) left me with a very similar error: UI.o: In function boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::Widgets::WidgetSet>::shared_ptr<Graphics::_Drawer::Group>(boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::_Drawer::Group> const&, boost::detail::dynamic_cast_tag)': UI.cpp:(.text._ZN5boost10shared_ptrIN8Graphics7Widgets9WidgetSetEEC1INS1_7_Drawer5GroupEEERKNS0_IT_EENS_6detail16dynamic_cast_tagE[boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::Widgets::WidgetSet>::shared_ptr<Graphics::_Drawer::Group>(boost::shared_ptr<Graphics::_Drawer::Group> const&, boost::detail::dynamic_cast_tag)]+0x30): undefined reference totypeinfo for Graphics::Widgets::WidgetSet' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status dynamic_cast_tag is just an empty struct in boost/shared_ptr.hpp. It's just a guess that boost might have anything at all to do with the error. Passing in a WidgetSet::Ptr totally eliminates the need for a cast, and it builds fine (which is why I think there's more going on than the standard answer for this question). Obviously, I'm trimming away a lot of details that might be important. My next step is to cut it down to the smallest example that fails to build, but I figured I'd try the lazy way out and take a stab on here first. TIA!

  Our clients must pay a monthly Fee... if they don't, what is the best way to block the asp.net software usage? Note: The application runs on the client own server, its not a SaaS app... My ideas are: Idea: Host a Web Service on the internet that the application will use to know if the client can use the software. Issue 1 - What happen if the client internet fails? Or the data center fails? Possible Answer: Make each web service access to send a key that is valid for 7 or 15 days, so each web service consult will enable the software to run more 7 or 15 days, this way the application will only be locked after 7 or 15 days without consulting our web servicee. Issue 2 - And if the client don't have or don't want to enable internet access to the application? Idea 2: Send a key monthly to the client. Issue - How to make a offline key? Possible Answer: Generate a Hash using the "limit" date, so each login try on software will compare the today hash with the key? Issue 2 - Where to store the key? Possible Answer: Database (not good, too easy to change), text file, registry, code file, assembly... Any opinion will be very appreciated!

However, 80 ms seemed to be the highest value I could use to keep the program running smoothly and even then the CPU usage is about 15-20%. Is this the best way to do this and do I have to just live with the fact that it eats this much CPU already on this point?

  What would be the best way to monitor a service's memory/load on the OpenSolaris platform so that one can send alerts and automate service management (restarts, etc) based on "rules"? On the linux platform I use Monit, but since OpenSolaris has SMF I thought there may be a complimentary service "built-in" if SMF doesn't have those features and I'd prefer to use a standard OpenSolaris app if there is one.

• Should websites live in /var/ or /usr/ according to recommended usage?

  According to a guide on the Linux directory structure, /usr/ is for application files, and /var/ is for files that change (I assume this means "files that belong to the applications"). Is this correct? If this is the case then I'm a little torn between using either. A website is an application (if it's dynamic, so to speak), but in other cases it is just a collection of files used by Apache. The default www dir lives in /var/www/, so should we follow suit by using /var/websites/ (or something similar), or choose /usr/websites/ since they could be applications? This is a very trivial question, but it's bugging me nonetheless. For our case, I'm leaning toward /usr/web or something like that, since our websites are all applications. Update: This is for our company websites; it's not a shared hosting server, so we don't need to worry about separating them in /home/ or anything like that.
