• Optimal way to make MySQL backups for fairly large databases (MyISAM / InnoDB)

  Currently we have one beefy MySQL database that runs a couple of high traffic Django based websites as well as some e-commerce websites of decent size. As a result we have a fair amount of large databases using both InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Unfortunately we've recently hit a wall due to the amount of traffic so I've setup another master server to help alleviate reads / backups. Now at the moment I simply use mysqldump with a few arguments and it's proven to be fine.. until now. Obviously mysqldump is a slow quick method however I believe we've outgrown its use. I now need a good alternative and have been looking into utilizing Maatkits mk-parallel-dump utility or an LVM snapshot solution. Succinct short version: I have a fairly large MySQL databases I need to backup Current method using mysqldump is inefficient and slow (causing issues) Looking into something such as mk-parallel-dump or LVM snapshots Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated - since I have to re-do how we're doing things I rather have it done properly / most efficient :).

Can anyone here recommend a database or similar system which matches the following criteria: Intuitive to use for users with little computer experience Multi-user support, ideally with integration in our existing LDAP user directory Should have a web-interface Not a hosted solution like Picasa (because we have a rather slow internet connection with very slow upload) Should allow tagging of images, sorting by various criteria and storing copyright information If there are native GNOME and/or Windows clients for the tool, that would be a great benefit. But, the problem is every time i have to fix the speed of the player. The Question is, i dont want to manipulate/tweak every time i play the file. • Force Windows 8 to search indexed files

  When using search files in Windows 8 (win+f) I don't get expected results. For example, I installed VLC, it's in Program Files (86) folder, and that folder is selected for indexing. Search for files (win+f) gives 0 results. If I pin to start that exe, then it's found - but I don't want to do this, that's not the point. Where does it search for files? Is there any way to specify search locations? It doesn't use Indexing Options settings, at least it seams so. Also, searching from explorer window is kinda slow - I tried entering VLC.EXE in search box (when in c:\ root), and it takes some time to give correct results. It works, but it looks like it doesn't use indexing, rather scan all files/folders, which is slow.

• Nothing is written in php5-fpm.log

  I have two servers which is Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04. When I use Ubuntu 14.04 in my new server and enabled the php-fpm log file found under /etc/php5/fpm/php-fpm.conf that reads as follows: error_log = /var/log/php5-fpm.log I noticed that most of the log that I found in Ubuntu 12.04 is not written in 14.04. For example, if I restart php5-fpm in my Ubuntu 12.04, a restart log is being written, however, this does not happen in 14.04.   Background: Home PC is Windows XP and using Cisco VPN client; home internet connection is fast (20MB) office VPN router is Cisco RV110W; work internet connection is slow (1.5MB) With VPN connected, my home PC internet surfing is very slow. I looked this up in Google and found talk about splitting, tunneling, routing tables, etc., but I'm not sure what/how to do it. Basically, I would like a persistent VPN connection with the office resources, and at the same time, utilize my home high speed internet connection to access the internet.   I need to remotely access and use my work computer a few times a week. I want to use VNC because of the price. I've used VNC before, mostly on my own network, where it's fast. However, VNC over the internet is incredibly slow. Even at 256 colors and lower, with Aero turned off, it is unbearably slow. I recently used Ammyy Admin to connect to do something requiring a quick reaction time. Ammyy was really fast, with almost no lag, and it was running in full color with Aero on! How can I make VNC faster, like Ammyy is? I'd use Ammyy, but I would probably run into the 15hr/month limit pretty quickly. Any suggestions? [EDIT] I'm currently using UltraVNC.

  I know that I can shape output traffic with tc or a similar tool. However, I want to shape the input traffic now—actually, I want to prioritize downloading of files of certain type through a slow lossy connection. I know the reason tc can only shape output traffic: the host itself has no direct control over the amount of input traffic. On the other hand, TCP has some measures built in it which prevent the TCP traffic from overflowing a slow connection. So, can I mangle something in TCP header so that the remote host will think my connection is slower than it thinks? Suppose that I am able to set the corresponding mark on both types of connections with iptables. Is there any way to reduce the input bandwidth of connections of first type, but only if connections of second type are present?

• Is an I/O benchmark made for hardware an accurate assessment of a Windows VM's performance under vSphere 5?

  We support an enterprise application running on Windows Server 2008 R2. One of our customers has chosen to install to VMWare, and what I'm finding is that the VM's are relatively slow compared to hardware. Our product development team has advised that many VMs appear to run particularly slow on I/O benchmarks, which impact performance in production. I've tried the AttoSoft I/O benchmark and find that for smaller I/O blocks (1-32K) the VM I'm looking at is 25x slower than hardware and for larger I/O blocks (1-8MB) it's 10x slower. Is this a fair benchmark? If not, any suggestions for a fair test?

• MySQL server hangs after approximately 1 month (CentOS)

  Hey guys, I've got a web server running Apache/PHP and MySQL (CentOS), and MySQL seems to hang once every month or so. As far as I can tell, there are a few slow queries that are being resolved, but other than that I can't really see any reason why MySQL would hang. I'm having problems determining the problem - nothing is showing up in /var/log/mysqld.log, and again there are a few slow queries, but nothing out of the ordinary. Load is average at the time of the crashes... Can I please get some hints on how to work out the issue? I can't reproduce on our staging environment, so I'm a little stuck.

• How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

  I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

  Is it possible and advisable to use an Internal Hard Drive as an External Hard drive also. I wanted to install SAP ECC 6 on my system which has only 250 GB but atleast 300 GB is required.I wanted to buy an External Drive first, then I heard loading SAP on an External would make it extremely slow. I'll be using it only as a beginer so even if it is a little slow i don't mind. Is it feasible to run such a big application from an External Hard disk ? So can i purchase a 500 or 1 TB Internal Hard disk and use it as an External too by fitting it with the necessary USB 3.0 Hard drive cases and cables ? or should i purchase a External and load SAP onto it ? • Linux freezes every few seconds

  We're having an issue where one our Linux boxes (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, running on EC2 with a quadruple-large size, 68GB of RAM and 8 virtual cores with 3.25GHz each) freezes up every few seconds. Typing in an ssh session will freeze, and running strace on one of the Postgresql processes that's running usually shows: 02:37:41.567990 semop(7831581, {{3, -1, 0}}, 1 for a few seconds before it proceeds (it always gets stuck at that semop). OProfile shows that most of the time is spent in the kernel (60%) versus 37% in Postgresql. The result of these halts (which began suddenly a day ago) is that load on the box has gone from 0.7 to 10+, and causes our entire stack to slow done. Any ideas on how to track down what's going on? iostat doesn't show the disks being particularly slow or overloaded, and top shows user cpu % spike from 8% to about 40% whenever these back-ups happen.

• Remote HTTP to FTP

  I am on a very slow download with the internet that I have and unfortunately I only have access to expensive and slow wireless or satelite. I have set up an FTP with a computer supplier locally who has a nice 2 Mbps speed and am trying to set up a way of adding links remotely (Hotfile, rapidshare, Fileserve, etc.) so that they can be downloaded onto the FTP and then transfered a few times a week manually onto a portable HDD. On my home PC I use Internet download manager for all my downloads. Is there a simple way that I can add links remotely to Internet Download Manager on the FTP or perhaps another solution? The OS on the FTP is Linux - I use Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7. I have not used FTP very much before so any suggestions on how best to do this would be much appreciated.

  I have a 128G SSD(830) of samsung installed on my win7 ultimate 64 bits machine. I have tried to copy a folder from my C drive to the SSD drive. And I have found out that copy speed is so slow, please look at picture below: I am just want to know, if this is because of I was tried to copy so many small files By the way. the SSD is Sata 3, but my mobo only has SATA 2 interface, I do not know if connect SATA 3 device to SATA 2 interface contributes to slow copy speed.

• BackupPC back-up has not been finished in 12 hours(!)

  I installed BackupPC toda on a server and set it to do a back-up 12 hours ago... while it's been backing up since, it seems very very slow and it's not completed yet. It's just backing up a testserver with a total disk usage of 1.8GB. What could cause the back-up process to be so slow? rsnapshot always worked wonderfully fast, but I want to improve my back-up solution. df shows that the size on the back-up disk is actually still increasing.

Our shared drive is a network folder on a Windows Server located at one of our locations. The current connection speed is terrible. • How can I fix a computer that is infested with malware and is extremely unresponsive? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I get rid of malicious spyware, malware, viruses or rootkits from my PC? I'm troubleshooting a Windows 7 PC for a friend. A couple of days ago it started running 'slow'. It turns out 'slow' is about 15 minutes to the first glimpse of the desktop, and another 30 to show icons. It is possible to open Task Manager, and nothing seems awry, CPU usage at 1-5%, plenty of memory free. The machine is clearly infested with malware though, in particular a program called 'Optimizer Pro' is demanding money to 'remove 5102 files slowing down my computer'. This seems highly suspicious. My problem is though, that I can't access msconfig (I left it for a couple of hours after having hopefully typed it into the Start Menu and hit enter - nothing seems to have loaded), or anything at all basically. I can boot from a Linux Live CD, but can I actually do anything useful from there? System Restore hasn't fixed it either, and Safe Mode exhibits the same behavior.

• How do I reduce RAM usage on my server?

  I have recently launched a site that is very popular but I am having trouble with scalability. My site makes heavy use of FFmpeg and at peak times RAM usage hits the 2 GB point quickly and the swap file starts getting used. CPU usage starts rising too. Users complain that the site is slow. They say this because all FFmpeg instances run very slow because of the number running at the same time. Users make use of FFmpeg on my server in real time. Is there anything I can consider or do to ease down the usage of the server and RAM just shooting up? Maybe there is something better than FFmpeg (!). Is the only solution "throwing some cash" at a more powerful server? I have given little information, please ask for more, so this problem can be solved.

• Speeding up ping

  We have pretty slow internet which makes working online quite tedious some times the internet is just generally slow, 600ms ping, 0.90mb download. (we are in Londnon, can you beleive). But other times the internet download speed is ok 5-8mb but the ping in 600ms is there a way we can speed this up. Good performance would be 5-10mb 30ms ping at our location, which we sometimes get in the morning. Resetting the router always seem to solve the ping issue for about 10 minutes but then it slows down again, any idea whats governing the ping and if anything can be done to address it ?

  My Windows 7 use to boot up fast and now its getting rather slow. I suspect one program is eating up all the time yet i cant tell what it is since task manager shows <40% of the cpu being used. What can i use to track how long each process takes when my computer boots/starts up? Note: Except for launchy which i used before my comp became slow, all my startup and services are all signed and known (broadcom, VMWare, Google Inc, Intel, etc) Note2: I am mostly considering the time it takes after i login but i suspect the time before that is slightly slower (i dont think very much though)

• Monitoring/logging a malfunctioning internet connection

  I have a mysterious internet connection problem: Every 15-20 minutes, the connection will become very slow, and take 2-3 minutes for anything to load. I've had a technician from the ISP over here to test the hardware, and everything is in pristine condition. They have no other explanation than a configuration error on my machine, a possibility I can exclude 90% because I'm experiencing the same problems with another machine. I will have to monitor the situation now, and I would like to run a program that logs when internet connections become slow. I thought about putting something together using at and wget. Does anybody know of some other tool for this that does this out of the box - maybe something with an adjustable request frequency, logging connection speeds etc.?

• Realtime website slowness (PHP/MYSQL)

  We got a website with realtime transactions. The past few days we experienced some slowness during a period of time. Usually the slowness last for 5 minutes. And also during the slowness we noticed that sometimes we can not connect to SSH and FTP or sometimes very slow to connect to those services. Currently we are trying to identify the issue. We already setup database monitoring tool. Now are about to signup with pingdom.com My question is. If the website is too slow due to the database (table or row lock) will it affect the other services like SSH and FTP? Does the ping correlates the page load and the connection between my PC and server? Thanks, Mark
