  Hey, I'm working for a company full-time and myself part-time. I started learning the Mac OS/Cocoa/Objective-C at work, and then I got the "Brilliant Idea" that I'd like to program for the iPhone. The iPhone stuff is going well, but I'm earning money there because I'm applying skills I learned on the job. What is commonly considered violating company policy on things like this? Is there any danger of the company claiming 'ownership' of my side-job? If I leave the company, could they ask me to stop working at my side business? The company and my iphone stuff are in completely different "areas" but I'm still concerned. What can I do to make sure? What else should I be wary of? Has anyone run into bad stuff like this before? • Do Apple and Google ask for a share if custom payment is done in a free app?

  I have a multiplatform game (web/iOS/Android) in the making. In the free version the core game is still fully playable but people who choose to pay will get more social features (and no ads, of course). I was thinking that rather than having a free and a paid version for all the platforms I may release the apps just for free and if the users want more, they have to register and pay a one-time fee (through a payment gateway or PayPal). The extra content would then be available in all the clients they have access to. Theoretically, this means a better value for the players and less maintenance and headache for me (obviously I have to handle all the payment troubles myself). Does it fit into the business model of Apple/Google? Or will they still claim their share of the registration fee?

  I recently went on a couple of interviews and all of them asked a one or two design questions, like how you would design a chess, monopoly, and so on. I didn't do good on those since I am a college student and lack of the experience of implementing big and complex systems. I figure the only way to improve my design capability is to read lots of others' code and try to implement myself. Therefore, for those companies that ask these questions, what are their real goals in this? I figure most of college grads start off working in a team guided by a senior leader in their first jobs. They might not have lots of design experience fresh out of colleges. Anyone could give pointers about how to practice those skills? Thank you very much

  Issue: Recently, I am having issues with the permission setup at client side. The way we setup permission is we create AD Group and add the add AD Group to the proper SharePoint Group. If we need to grant permission to a user, we then add the user to the correct AD group. But end user reports that by adding a user to an AD group, this user does not have any access to the SharePoint site. Solution: Change the AD Group scope from Global to Universal fix the problem.   I'm working on a an open-source community-oriented project which needs a highly social component where users can post discussion topics and questions and interact with each other. It would be ideal to facilitate discussion seamlessly between a bulletin board and Facebook. Has anyone seen such an integration? I'm talking about something that goes beyond a simple FB OAuth and actually synchronizes both forum posts / topics / OAuth / comments. • How do I remove my Facebook account from Gwibber?

  I started using Ubuntu 12.10 today, and put in my social networking details in Online Accounts under System Settings. I like being able to chat with my Facebook friends in Empathy, but I don't necessarily want my tweets to go to Facebook. I want to remove Facebook from Gwibber, but not Empathy. How do I do this? There is nothing in Gwibber preferences and I can't see how to do it in Online Accounts. The reason I want to remove it is that it isn't clear enough which accounts are posted to and I don't necessarily want the feeds mixing together.

  As a programmer, you work on your software design skills. You learn about things such as modularity and reusability and how you can achieve them in code. There's plenty of literature on the subject and engineers talk about it all the time. What about if you want to design network protocols? How do you judge that protocol X is badly designed while Y is well designed? (eg. in programming you are often pointed out to a well-written piece of code in order to learn from it - what is the equivalent for network protocols?) For example, suppose I want to design a P2P protocol similar to BitTorrent or I want to make a better version of the Socks protocol. How would I go about doing a good job on this? Thanks!

  With all of the frameworks available these days ORM's DI/IoC etc. I find that many programmers are losing or don't have the problem solving skills needed to solve difficult issues. I've seen many times unexpected behaviour creep into applications and the developers unable to really dig in and find the issues. It seems to me that deep understanding of whats going on under the hood is being lost. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting these frameworks aren't good and haven't moved the industry forward, only asking if as a unintended consequence developers aren't gaining the knowledge and skill needed for deep understanding of systems.

• Which programming language to develop software for USC that also runs on other OS?? (WINDOWS/OSX)

  I have skills in JAVA and C#: First i had a closer look to JAVA (Eclipse with Windowbuilder-Plugin) - Swing: But there is no natvie GUI-Support for GTK3 (e.g., HUD seems not to work) Then i was at JAVA - SWT: It is to heavy. I want do code a small app that improves the Ubuntu desktop. I don't want to ship a program with eclipse included. After that i found C# Mono (Monodevelop): GTK-shparp is only for GTK2 available. A GTK3-port will come soon but is it possible to convert the program from GTK2 to GTK3 without extra adaptations? The next bad thing is, that MONO is now dropped from Ubuntu LTS 12.04. So i have no chance that my app would be a default-app in an Ubuntu-Image. (This is also a factor for me to choose a programming language). I know there are other techs but i want to use as programing language JAVA or C#.

• Building a distributed system on Amazon Web Services

  Would simply using AWS to build an application make this application a distributed system? For example if someone uses RDS for the database server, EC2 for the application itself and S3 for hosting user uploaded media, does that make it a distributed system? If not, then what should it be called and what is this application lacking for it to be distributed? Update Here is my take on the application to clarify my approach to building the system: The application I'm building is a social game for Facebook. I developed the application locally on a LAMP stack using Symfony2. For production I used an a single EC2 Micro instance for hosting the app itself, RDS for hosting my database, S3 for the user uploaded files and CloudFront for hosting static content. I know this may sound like a naive approach, so don't be shy to express your ideas.

  I was at a conference two weeks ago, which was targeted to sales and marketing professionals. The discussions around the changing scenario in sales was very interesting. More and more of selling is moving to the internet- sales people are delivering more of their presentations online, or via the phone. Budget constraints and new technologies have dramatically decreased the need for face-to-face interactions. At the same time, customers are also researching for products on their own, taking the advice of peers, making up their mind, and then contacting the vendor. That takes care of more than half of the usual selling process. But humans are social animals, and because of that I believe that despite these changing trends and technologies, the need to maintain the human touch will always be necessary. One of the presenters at the conference shared this video, which stayed in my mind.
