I am running Win 7x32 secured corporate laptop. My USBaudio device has .exe installer file which is not possible to execute because of having no admin rights. Is it possible to embed driver files in the system without installation? All attempts of unpacking the .exe file got failed. 7zip is extracting files without extensions and Universal Extractor says that .exe file is 7zip self extracting archive.
Thank you
Ron
Is there something fundamentally different about hard drives and optical drives regarding how they communicate with the computer? I ordered a SATA to USB adapter from Monoprice and I want to know whether it will work with an SATA optical drive removed from a MacBook Pro.
Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
I am writing a script that uses MS KB 823732 to temporarily prevent users from plugging in new USB storage devices. This works fine, and the HKLM\...\Services\UsbStor registry key successfully blocks newly-connected devices from being accessed.
Is there a WMI event that will tell me that a drive was connected, regardless of whether it was mounted?
I tried querying for __InstanceCreationEvent but that is apparently raised only after the drive is mounted and made available, which doesn't fit my requirements.
what do the various USB charge while sleeping modes mean? my new laptop has these sleep while charging modes :
mode 4
mode 3
mode 2
mode 1
the list box doesn't tell me what these modes mean or do. I noticed that my iphone is charging really slowly on mode 4. What is it going to do to my power consumption if I change it to something like 1 or 2 ?
Hi.
I am using a Microsoft wireless phone ear piece and I have had the receiver plugged into the USB port on the Left Hand side. I have been getting intermittent success with the signal.
I have recently tried plugging it in to one of the ports on the top Right Hand side, and it seems that I am getting a better signal.
Is there a difference between the ports?
Thanks.
Sometimes i can't remove the external usb harddisk because of the error in the screen shot below when i try to safely remove the harddisk.
There is no application using the harddisk and it occurs randomly.
is there any software that i can use to see which software have a lock on any file on the harddisk?
Thanks
Depending on what's currently connected onto a PC, a USB key does not always get the same drive letter. This is an issue for me because I want to use this key as a backup destination, and I thus have to change the path that's used from time to time.
Is it possible to make sure that a specific key ends up with always the same letter?
Thanks.
When I install Fedora 19 with a kickstart file and via network, the generated ifcfg-eth0 file is genorated by the kickstart:
# Generated by parse-kickstart
However if I use the same kickstart file and install via a USB stick, the ifcfg file is generated by initrd.
# Generated by dracut initrd
The line in the kickstart file to set the network settings is as follows:
network --device=eth0 --bootproto=dhcp --hostname=SOMEHOSTNAME
Is there away to keep network device settings set in the kickstart file when not installing via network?
I have this RS232 USB device that Windows 7 thinks its a mouse. When it's activated the mouse cursor starts to jump to random places on the screen. I want to use this device but I want to disable this strange behavior.
It seems that the canonical instructions for making a bootable USB flash drive that runs memtest are at:
http://forum.canardpc.com/showthread.php?t=28875
However, after following them to a T, I boot up the new machine and get:
"could not find kernel image: linux"
Do I need to set up a lilo.conf first?
I'd like to unplug my USB mass storage device, but I get the following error message from Windows:
Windows can't stop your 'XYZ' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later.
How can I find out which application locks the device, so I can safely unplug it without having to close all running applications first?
Note: I'm working on a Windows Vista system.
I have this USB flash drive which has two partitions separated by the manufacturer. The interface included doesn't allow me to merge them and I was wondering if someone has come across such problem.
What tools do you normally carry with you on your usb stick ?
Like your favourite text editor, which you've got accustomed to; windows explorer replacement, maybe your personal wiki ? What else ?
We are currently protecting our software with a USB dongle, but we would like also to store the application itself on it. I'm sure something like this exists, but we haven't be able to find it.
I am a little frustrated having to use to separate USBs for booting on mac and windows. Is there a way that I can have the version for mac and the version for windows on one USB? or even better, one version that can be booted on both? I have heard of multibootiso, but I'm not entirely sure that it will work on imac.
If needed, I am willing to use terminal to make this happen, even if its a long complicated process.
I just got a new desktop PC and was trying to install Windows 7 on it. Unfortunately I don't have a DVD drive in my laptop to burn a DVD image of Windows installation DVD, so I made a installation USB flash drive. Installation started as normal, but after clicking "Install now" I got a message that Windows can't find CD/DVD drivers and installation can't proceed. I wonder what drivers could it be missing.
Thanks!
Or should I pony up for a usb 3.0 external hard drive? (my mobo will support it)
I intend to only use it for playing videos if that makes a difference.
I know close to nothing about hardware so let me know if you need more info.
Hi,
How can I configure windows to use a USB modem like I can do it on linux (http://forumz.in/1799-how-use-reliance-broadband-netconnect-ubuntu-linux/)
I need to bypass the std dialer software provided by the vendor, its exceptionally buggy/irksome and not easy to automate.
EDIT:
OS: Windows Vista (Home basic)
Modem: ZTE AC871 or may be AC8710
I am looking for a USB 3.0 + eSATA docking station for 2,5" (and optionally. 3,5") SATA drives in order to easily connect some of my (formerly internally used) drives to me laptop which is equipped with an eSATA port.
I am currently tending to buy this one:
http://www.amazon.de/Uspeed-Superspeed-Externe-Festplatten-Chipsets/dp/B0087B9NE8/
Anyone any experiences with this device?
Anyone possessing technically equivalent device which he/she can recommend?
Thanks a lot!
Hey,
Whenever I lock the screen on my USB Ubuntu install be it manually or automatically when I get back it just shows the desktop again without asking for a password.
How can I enable the password lock again because this way it's quite useless.
Thanks for your time, Xeross
USB is keyed so that it can only be plugged into a port a certain way, to ensure that the contacts touch. But what if you either forced it to plug in improperly, or the port itself was worn down and the plug was worn down and you could plug it in backwards? What kind of havoc, if any, would it cause?
I recorded audio for a PowerPoint presentation and now a colleague wants me to send the presentation to him. The file is currently 18 MB and I want to get it down to handy 1 or 2MB by stripping the audio.
The only way I see is to remove the audio in the animation bar slide by slide.
Stripping notes can be done by the "inspect document" feature. But for audio I see no such way.
How can I remove the audio all at once?
