• MacBook Pro (with DVI) to HDMI, including audio - possible?

  I have a MacBook Pro with DVI. I'd like to hook it up to my living room TV for movies and such but I want to keep it out of the way. I already have HDMI cables run to the basement where I have a cable box. Is there something I could you to connect the MBP video and audio to HDMI so I only need the one cable to the TV? I'm looking for a quality picture but I don't want to spend a ton of $. I've googled a bit, but I'm looking for some recommendations.

• What USB key would you recommend using for running a Windows 7 VM off of?

  Because I can't find a good PHP editor for OSX, I develop in Windows with PhpEd. At the moment, my development time is split between a desktop and a laptop. To partially solve the problem of having 2 different environments, I have installed a virtual machine (through Virtual Box) and put the hard drive file on an external hard drive. At the moment, I've been connecting it through Firewire 800. I have 2 problems with this setup: (1) The hard drive is fairly large so to carry the laptop and hard drive I pretty much require a backpack. (2) The hard drive requires quite a bit of power and therefore reduces the battery life (by about 40%). My thought is to move the VM hard drive onto a USB key. I realize it will be slower, but as I'm just using it for PHP development, there isn't a lot of disk activity in the VM. The only really intense time is boot up, otherwise, it just about sits idle. Do anyone have any suggestions on a USB key to use for the VM? It would need to a minimum of 32GB.

• How to play audio through a bluetooth headset in Windows 7.

  I recently did an in-place upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 RTM. For the most part, things have went brilliantly. The only issue I've been facing is regarding my bluetooth headset, a Dell BH200. The laptop is an Inspiron 1720. I can get Windows 7 to pair with the headset, and even get the bluetooth settings to show that there is stereo audio available. The problem is that the bluetooth headset never shows up in my sound output devices list. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the bluetooth drivers from Dell, tried turning on/off all of the features of the headset, removing the bluetooth driver and letting windows redetect and install but nothing has worked so far. I guess I should mention that the headset worked fine in Vista. Anyone have any ideas?

  A couple of years back MP3 was the most supported format for portable devices. Then Apple came along and wiped the floor of all the portable devices with the iPod as well as the iPhone. They clearly favour M4A (AAC). When to choose, right now, the 'best' audio codec to encode music to, which would you choose to achieve maximal independence of portable device vendors: MP3 or M4A? (I am well aware of Ogg (vorbis): no market (maybe this changes with HTML5 and more WebKit on portable devices), I am also aware of FLAC: I dont want to discuss long term storage.)

• Multiboot USB (OSX only): How to customize partition name?

  Trying to deal with all the Mac OSX recovery disks I've got by moving them to bootable USB images. I've got a big USB drive with multiple partitions for each recovery disk, and it's easy to use Disk Utility to "restore" the recovery DVD to a partition. When I boot my target Mac while holding down the Alt key, I can see all my bootable images and they work great. Problem is, they've all got the same name: "Mac OS X Install DVD." I manage Macs of various vintages. If my target Mac needs 10.6.3 for example, my only option seems to be to try each one until I get past the "Mac OSX can't be installed on this computer" message. I originally named my partitions with the OSX revision number, but that name is replaced by the disk image name during Disk Utility restore. Is there any way to customize the name during or after Disk Utility restore? I tried making a new DVD image on disk first and renaming it, but when I restore it to my recovery partition it has the original name. EDIT: After booting to the wrong partition, and getting the "..can't be installed" message, I can open the Startup Disk menu and see the other partitions - and as I select each one, the info at the bottom indicates which OS revision is on that partition. So I know the info is in there! Just want it at the boot screen if possible.

• Ubuntu Installation Help for an IBM R31 Thinkpad

  I recently acquired an old IBM R31 Thinkpad, and I'd figure I'd install Lubuntu on it. I've followed the quick steps for USB installation on the help wiki page, but I can't seem to get it to boot from my formatted flash drive. I've checked the boot priority on the BIOS page, but the option to boot from USB doesn't even seem to be there. The only bootable options are legacy and USB floppy drives. The CD drive is shot, so I can't install from there either. Do I have any other options for installation without having to pay for a floppy drive or a replacement CD drive? The wiki pages mentions something about installation from within Windows. Would it be possible to remove Windows using this option, or would it just create a partition? Thanks

• 13.10 - Weird WiFi connection problems - WMP300N - Broadcom BCM4321

  Just installed 13.10 on my desktop and I really like it. After having problems with getting the wifi to work, I installed it connected to the internet with an ethernet cable and added in the 3rd party software and updates as per the installation procedure. After installation was completed, I saw the wifi icon in the upper right hand corner, but it was not seeing any wifi networks. Some Googling brought me to use the 'Additional Drivers' application. It found the WMP300N Broadcom BDM4321 based pci wifi card and installed the proprietary Broadcom STA wireless driver, which may have been installed before. I'm not sure. Here is the weird part: when I start my system, wifi seems to be in some sort of suspended state where the system sees that the card exists but the card will not detect any wifi networks. It will work after booting once I 'Additional Drivers' application and then start FireFox. I know it seems weird, but this is the process I've got down to get the card to recognize wifi networks. After those applications are open for a few seconds, the card starts to function like normal (although maintaining the wifi connection is problem but most likely a seperate issue). The reason this is a problem is because this is supposed to just be a headless box managed through SSH. • Acer Revo (ION platform) + Maverick + 5.1 surround over HDMI

  I've had a turbulent relationship with my media centre box. Every upgrade I perform on it seems to bring a brand new set of audio issues (the opposite of my desktop where things seem to get better and better). It's a Acer Revo 3600. That's basically an low-end Intel Atom chip with a Nvidia 9400M onboard. On paper that's perfect for something like a media centre. But having just upgraded to Maverick, the sound properties box only wants to offer me stereo sound over HDMI. The exact setup goes: Revo - Onkyo AV receiver - LG TV. The Onkyo box strips off the audio (supporting 7.1 -- though we're only using 6 speakers) and feeds the video onto the TV. I'd like to get to a point where Ubuntu thinks it's doing 5.1 over HDMI, upmixing stereo to 6ch and supporting DTS/AC3 (through Boxee). I've had this working before but it's frankly been a bit of a hacktastrophe. The audio chip is recognised as Nvidia MCP79/7A HDMI in alsamixer if that helps.

  Hi! A am asking about problem with USB data stick (that uses fat32 file system). If you unplug USB stick without unmounting (safly remove) data may become locked when you mount USB stick another time (you can't make changes to files). If you unmount and mount partition few times, data becomes normally accessable. Problem is that I can not repeat (force) this problem now. But it has happend many times even recently. Has this been happening to somoeone else?

• Nvidia problems. I think.

  Let me start off by saying, I've been trying to run Ubuntu on my custom PC for about 2 years. From 10.04 to 12.04, this problem persists. When I try to boot Ubuntu from either a USB stick or a CD, I see the normal Ubuntu splash screen. It looks like it's working, orange dots are moving, but then the screen glitches and freezes. I'm assuming this happens because there are no drivers for my graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 8800, I think). My motherboard has no onboard graphics, nor does it have a VGA out. So, how can I get this working on my system? Can I somehow put the drivers along side the .img on the USB stick? I can boot from my Ubuntu USB stick on my MacBook. In case that helps anyone...

• (Xubuntu) no touchpad or mouse on Aspire One D270

  I installed Xubuntu 12.10 on an Aspire One D270 using a Live USB. Initially, the live USB wouldn't boot, but by running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade on it (on a different machine), I upgraded the kernel and it now works perfectly. However, after installing Xubuntu from the stick onto the D270, neither the touchpad nor an external mouse works. If I use the keyboard to navigate to the mouse settings, the 'device' setting is greyed out. I don't see why the mouse should work perfectly when running from the live USB but not once installed to the machine...? Thanks for any help.

• Unable to use TL-WN821N

  Hi, I got a TP-LINK USB wireless module - TL-WN821N, using Ubuntu 10.4 (same problems were also seen in 10.10). From everything I've read online, the usb should work just fine, since the Atheros ar9170 is built into the kernel. However, when I plug it in, it is detected as a USB device, but there is no wlan associated with it, and basically - nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? what should I do so that the Atheros driver is associated with this device? btw, on Windows it works fine (with the drivers). • Why won't Ubuntu copy large files to FAT32 flash Drives?

  Since I installed 11.10 I am unable to copy large files (say 1gb or more) to ANY usb drive that is formated as FAT. The file starts copying, but soon an error appears, saying "Unable to Copy" . "Error splicing file: Input/output error". I am able to do it via terminal, using the cp command. I use Gnome3, but the same error has happened in Unity as well. Apparently it works if I format the USB drive as NTFS or EXT3, EXT4. But, for many appliances, FAT is necessary. The problem is also not with the USB port, because it works under Windows. It did not happen before, when I had 10.04 installed.

• Can't install Ubuntu 13.04

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 on a Dell Mini 10 that is currently running Qimo. I want to replace the old operating system entirely. When I turn on the computer and boot from the USB stick it brings up a black screen that says: Boot: I have no idea where to go from here. I created the bootable USB stick using Universal USB installer. I've used the same process for installing Ubuntu on other machines in the past have never had this issue.   My friend asked me for some files that I let him take from my system. I did not see he doing that. Then I was left with a doubt: what extra files or data did he take from my system? I was thinking is here any application or method which shows what data is copied to which USB (if name available then shows name or otherwise device id) and what data is being copied to Ubuntu machine . • Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device" successfully

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. Whatever is being installed does so without error. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

  I'm having problems with a CentOS 5.0 system when using a certain USB device. The problem is that the device advertises itself as a HID device and linux is happy to try to provide support for it: In /ver/log/messages I see a line that reads: hiddev96: USB HID 1.11 Device [KXX USB PRO] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1 My question comes down to: Is there a way to tell linux to not use hiddev96 for that device in particular? If yes, how? If not, what are my options - can I turn hiddev96 off completely? UPDATE I should probably have been a bit more specific about what is going on. The machine is running Centos 5.0, and on top of it I'm running VMWare workstation with Windows XP - which is where the USB device is actually supposed to operate. All works fine for other USB devices (i.e. VMWare successfully connects the USB device to the guest OS and the OS can use it, but for this particular device VMWare connects it to the guest OS, but the OS can't read/write to it) Every attempt locks up the application that is trying to communicate with the device. I've reason to believe that it is because the device is a HID device and there's some contention between the Linux host and the Windows guest OS in accessing the device. • Installing FreeNAS 8.3 problems

  I'm trying to install FreeNAS 8.3 on some desktop-level hardware (AMD Phenom + 890FX + 16GB) and I've been unsuccessful. I initially tried using a USB stick and followed the instructions on the FreeNAS site here. Making the USB was simple as the instructions laid out, but as soon as the USB is detected (during the boot process) some text appears and quickly vanishes and my machine reboots infinitely. After trying several different was to make the USB, I tried using a DVD-ROM but again, I had the same issue as the USB stick. This leads me to conclude that either a BIOS setting is incorrect but I have no idea which one. I've changed the BIOS to not "fast" boot per se, and I've correctly configured the boot order per USB stick and the DVD-ROM drive so I know that it's working. Have I missed anything that might be causing this problem? I'm not a FreeBSD/FreeNAS expert by any means.

• Installing Chrome OS on HP Pavilion

  Trying to install Chrome OS on HP Pavillion tx1000. I changed the BIOS to boot from USB before hard drive, and created a bootable USB drive (SanDisk Cruzer 4GB). No matter how many ways I try to make the USB drive, the laptop hangs on the startup screen, and trying to open the Boot Order Options freezes on "Fixed disk 0: ...". On the other hand, without the USB plugged in, the computer continues, and displays "Initialized Mouse", and then onto the Boot Order Options. If you let it boot normally from the beginning, it starts up fine into Windows Vista. I am using Hexxeh's Chrome OS build. Here are the different methods I've tried for making the Bootable USB Drive: Hexxeh's Image Creator (for Mac) Making the USB device bootable (using these directions). I wrote the image using Win32DiskImager. Writing the image using Win32DiskImager (without making it bootable).

• Debian - no sound output

  So I've been trying for the last few days to get sound output on my Linux desktop. The onboard audio is Intel HD Audio ICH9, but I couldn't get Alsa to even detect it, so I disabled it in BIOS and installed a PCI card - a Dynex DX-SC51. Searching around, I found that it needed the Alsa driver for ice1724, so I installed all the stuff for that. Now, the system detects my sound card, but I can't get any audio to play out of it. • Try out ubuntu on thinkpad x40 (via usb)?

  I am trying to try out ubuntu (i,e, install it within windows) on my thinkpad x40. I followed the instructions on how to create a bootable usb (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download). No problem. The issue I have now is that th eusb ports on my x40 were burned before (common problem with the machine), i.e. do not work. So I got a USB notebook card from belkin. However it does not seem to recognize the usb stick from bios, thus I cannot boot from it. I also do not have a cd rom. Then tried to run wubi from the usb stick, briefly appears in task manager, no further action. So I tried it with wubi.exe, but same thing. Downloaded it to desktop, run it, briefly appears in the task manager under processes, no further action. Any one idea? I have enough memory and enough freed hd space. Thanks. Oliver
