• JDK bug migration: bugs.sun.com now backed by JIRA

  The JDK bug migration from a Sun legacy system to JIRA has reached another planned milestone: the data displayed on bugs.sun.com is now backed by JIRA rather than by the legacy system. Besides maintaining the URLs to old bugs, bugs filed since the migration to JIRA are now visible too. The basic information presented about a bug is the same as before, but reformatted and using JIRA terminology: Instead of a "category", a bug now has a "component / subcomponent" classification. As outlined previously, part of the migration effort was reclassifying bugs according to a new classification scheme; I'll write more about the new scheme in a subsequent blog post. Instead of a list of JDK versions a bug is "reported against," there is a list of "affected versions." The names of the JDK versions have largely been regularized; code names like "tiger" and "mantis" have been replaced by the release numbers like "5.0" and "1.4.2". Instead of "release fixed," there are now "Fixed Versions." The legacy system had many fields that could hold a sequence of text entries, including "Description," "Workaround", and "Evaluation." JIRA instead only has two analogous fields labeled as "Description" and a unified stream of "Comments." Nearly coincident with switching to JIRA, we also enabled an agent which automatically updates a JIRA issue in response to pushes into JDK-related Hg repositories. These comments include the changeset URL, the user making the push, and a time stamp. These comments are first added when a fix is pushed to a team integration repository and then added again when the fix is pushed into the master repository for a release. We're still in early days of production usage of JIRA for JDK bug tracking, but the transition to production went smoothly and over 1,000 new issues have already been filed. Many other facets of the migration are still in the works, including hosting new incidents filed at bugs.sun.com in a tailored incidents project in JIRA.

• vmware problems

  I renamed some of my virtual machine files and never did a backup before doing so. Now I can't get the machine to start again as it asks for the old files. I have updated references to these files in the project setting files which are in plain text. The virtual machine keeps on asking for the files anyway. I never shut off the machine properly before starting to rename the files. How can I save my work done on the virtual machine disk? I have tried to create a new machine and adding the disk from the old virtual machine only but there seems to be dependencies between disk files. The parent drive cannot be found I am told when trying to add the drive of interest. Any suggestion on how to resolve the issue?

• Screen flicker -> Severe System Slowdown?

  I'm using a Dell D830 laptop, and over the last few weeks it's been developing a very irritating screen flicker problem that leads to the system slowing down almost to the point of unusability. At seemingly random times (no commonality between how long the system has been running, what I was doing, what applications were open, etc.) my screen (I use two external LCD's with the laptop closed in a dock) flickers for a moment, then the system becomes incredibly slow. The screen redraws painfully slowly--almost like what you might expect to see with generic graphics drivers installed--and the entire system is maddeningly unresponsive. The only thing that seems to be able to correct the issue is a restart. I've checked the event logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there, and definitely nothing that's common to all of the events. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Any ideas?

• What would cause previously sent emails to be sent again from Exchange the first time someone logs i

  A few users testing our Citrix XenApp service found that several (seemingly random) previously sent emails were sent out immediately after they logged into Outlook via Citrix for the first time. The problem hasn't occurred for them since. After one user had this happen, and we scratched our heads about it thinking it was a fluke, our IT director had this same issue. I guess I'd rule out any PEBKAC issues. I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem. If you have any ideas what could have caused this, I'd appreciate you sharing them, as strange or far-fetched as they may seem :)

• JPEG images not loading on PlayBook (Marmalade + iwgame)

  I'm using iwgame on a test project and I was trying to render different resolutions of JPG and PNG images. Everything works fine on the Marmalade Simulator, however once I deploy the game to our PlayBook and run it, only the PNG images are shown. I have declared the images in the MKB file and on a XML file iwgame's using to load the images. I've checked the deployments folder and all images are present in the intermediatefiles/native folder. We're currently using a BlackBerry only license, so we can only test this on the PlayBook, but we do intend to get a Community license and deploy to iOS and Android devices eventually (I'm not sure if this is a problem exclusive to the PlayBook). I really don't know if this is a Marmalade or a iwgame issue. I have a different test project without iwgame and it simply won't run with jpg images (I get the error: 'Could not find handler for extension "jpg"'). While searching for a sollution, I've seen people talking about using libjpg, but I've also found that Marmalade supposedly has integrated native jpeg support (and because of that iwgame has abandoned their jpeg loading support since v0.340), so I don't know what to think. I'm currently using the most recent versions of both Marmalade and iwgame, I believe: Marmalade 6.1.2 and iwgame 0.400. Also, please let me know if there's an easier or better way to do this, such as linking libjpg or something (I'm not exactly sure how to do this). I really would appreciate some help with this, there's a huge difference in size for the images we're planning to use, from a ~500kb jpg file to a ~3.5mb png file. Thanks, guys.

• Why is wireless slow with Atheros AR9285?

  I know there are many posts like this, however none of the fixes I have found have worked. I had the issue on 11.04, and after having no luck fixing it decided to try 12.04 however this has not fixed the problem. • 3D Vector "End Point" Calculation for procedural Vector Graphics

  Alright, So I need some help with some Vector Math. I've developing some game Engines that have Procedural Fractal Generation for Some Graphics, such as using Lindenmayer Systems for generating Trees and Plants. L-Systems, are drawn by using Turtle Graphics, which is a form of Vector graphics. I first created a system to draw in 2D Graphics, which works perfectly fine. But now I want to make a 3D equivalent, and I’ve run into an issue. For my 2D Version, I created a Method for quickly determining the “End Point” of a Vector-like movement. Given a starting point (X, Y), a direction (between 0 and 360 degrees), and a distance, the end point is calculated by these formulas: newX = startX + distance * Sin((PI * direction) / 180) newY = startY + distance * Cos((PI * direction) / 180) Now I need something Similarly Equivalent for performing this Calculation in 3D, But I haven’t been able to Google anything that could show me how to do this. I'm flexible enough to get whatever required information is needed for this method calculation, in any reasonable form (Vector3, Quaternion, ect). To summarize: Given a starting point/vector position in 3D space (X, Y, Z), a Direction in 3D space (Vector3, Quaternion, ect), and a Distance, I need to find the “End Point” in 3D Space. • SQL restore from single file db to filegroup

  I have a 180GB MOSS 2007 database whose maintenance (i.e. backups and restores) are becoming a problem. Part of the issue can be resolved by splitting the three content sites down into their own site collections, however this will likely still leave me with a 100gb DB to deal with. Whilst this isnt entirely problematic for SQL it does mean that backups / restores take far too long. my idea is to split each of the databases to 30gb files, then to import the content into them which should distribute the content across the file groups,making it much easier / faster to backup/restore. Is there a way to backup from a single file and restore to a filegroup? If i have the wrong understanding of filegroups then I'm more than happy to find out other methods of managing the size of databases.

  This works; I'm not having trouble, but I want to be certain that this is bulletproof. I came up with a neat little .htaccess redirect, but I am not sure if it is secure; do you know? <IfModule mod_rewrite.c     RewriteEngine On     RewriteRule ^goto/([a-z]+)/?$ /$1/ [R] </IfModule I think as long as the server is configured correctly and the files handle authentication autonomously, then it shouldn't be a security issue. Also, being that the rewrite rule only works with characters a-z and one slash I doubt they could jump around directories by injecting stuff into the URL I think...

• Is it OK to use dynamic typing to reduce the amount of variables in scope?

  Often, when I am initializing something I have to use a temporary variable, for example: file_str = "path/to/file" file_file = open(file) or regexp_parts = ['foo', 'bar'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp_parts.join('|') ) However, I like to reduce the scope my variables to the smallest scope possible so there is less places where they can be (mis-)used. For example, I try to use for(var i ...) in C++ so the loop variable is confined to the loop body. In these initialization cases, if I am using a dynamic language, I am then often tempted to reuse the same variable in order to prevent the initial (and now useless) value from being used latter in the function. file = "path/to/file" file = open(file) regexp = ['...', '...'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp.join('|') ) The idea is that by reducing the number of variables in scope I reduce the chances to misuse them. However this sometimes makes the variable names look a little weird, as in the first example, where "file" refers to a "filename". I think perhaps this would be a non issue if I could use non-nested scopes begin scope1 filename = ... begin scope2 file = open(filename) end scope1 //use file here //can't use filename on accident end scope2 but I can't think of any programming language that supports this. What rules of thumb should I use in this situation? When is it best to reuse the variable? When is it best to create an extra variable? What other ways do we solve this scope problem?

• WordPress injection?

  I don't really know how to express my problem, so bear with me. This is a bit hard to explain. I have a Wordpress installation, the latest, and often (once a day) my site redirects users to the /wp-admin/install.php file. Asking for my login credentials of course. I have tried reinstalling WordPress and still have not been able to figure what they are doing. That happens regularly. Also, a few hours later, I am able to see my site normally. Hope this makes sense. I suspect there myst be some database DoS that allows them to inject a redirect of some sort into my admin area, thus redirecting the user to said directory (install.php). But that's just me. I really have no clue what else could they be doing. I looked at the source code from several php files and noted some of them don't include a ? tag. Could that be an issue? My hosting company is iPage, I've contacted them and they say there's nothing wrong with my files. Anyone have a clue? I can paste the code to any source file.

• Ubuntu Server and setting up two nic cards

  I have ubuntu server on a computer with a wireless and hardwired nic card. The wireless needs to get the internet and pass it to the ubuntu server as well as pass it along to the hardwired nic card to more computers. I am having issues getting the basic set up as I believe the route table is grabbing from the wrong nic card. The router is 192.168.1.0 and the server is set to 192.168.1.11 on the wireless card through DHCP ETH0 (wired nic card) is set up to be 10.10.10.0 and the server is 10.10.10.1) I am not a linux or networking guru but basically I am trying to have internet come from a guest network 192.168.1.0 i believe to give internet to the ubuntu server then the ubuntu server will also A) have the wired nic serve DHCP addresses to other computers via a switch or router (that acts as a switch) via 10.10.10.0 addresses. And I would love if it also passed along internet capabilities as well if possible. Bu really at this point my hope is to at least get the internet working on the server and the DHCP to pass correctly. At the moment the specific issue I am having is getting ubuntu server to connect to the internet and have both nic cards up and running correctly. Any help would be appreciated!   I am facing this issue on Ubuntu 12.04, which is for my Wimax modem with beceem chipset. If I replug the device Ubuntu goes in hang state. Its happens very often. If I plug the USB and restart it works most of the time. But it is very annoying to restart every time it hangs. The modem works smoothly in Windows 7. And it used to work OK in Ubuntu 11.10. • Grub menu will not show the first time I try to boot my ubuntu server 12.04 after it is shutdown for a long time

  I am running into a booting issue after installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. Following is the symptom of the problem. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION: Dual core AMD Athlon 64 3 Disks: two SATA (out of which one is SSD) and one PATA. Using LVM for disk partition management. /boot is not under LVM rest of the partitions are. / is on the SSD BIOS boot sequence is correct and points to the disk with /boot and boot loader is installed on this disk. SYMPTOMS: POST messages Blinking cursor on first line then moves to second line Screen flickers then becomes black Everything is unresponsive, hard reboot POST messages will not show up on screen. Monitor displays powersave message Force shutdown machine again. Shutoff power to machine for a few minutes. Restart machine. POST message show up. Grub menu shows up Ubuntu server 12.04 boots normally. From now on Ubuntu server boots normally until machine is shutdown for a long time (for example, 30 mins) Repeat steps 1 through 13 once the machine is started after a long time. WHAT DID I TRY? I read several posts and have tried: radeon.modeset=0 setting the gfxmode edd=0 nolacpi boot-repair Nothing seems to work. In my search I did see only one post with this same symptom. Unfortunately, I am not being able to locate that post anymore. The interesting fact is that with this same machine configuration, if I install Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 then everything works fine. • Executing symbolic link to exe - "The specified path does not exist"

  When trying to execute a symbolic link which points to an exe file (on Windows 7), the "Open with" windows appears. When renaming it to a ".exe" file, it says "The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again.". Symlinks to other destinations seem to work fine. I know that because hard links are a reference to the file's inode, they do not have this issue. But because of their disadvantages (like replacing "target file" not possible), I avoid hard links. And Windows shortcuts (lnk files) aren't filesystem links. Although I haven't had any trouble with them yet, I'd rather avoid them as well. So is there any way to execute a symlink?

  We have a PHP application that has 3 web servers (running Nginx and Apache). The web server's directory root are symlinked directories that point to an NFS mount. For example: web01 has an NFS mount at /data/webapp, which is symlinked to /home/webapp. Apache serves content from /home/webapp/www. We also use ACP for our PHP opcode cache. When we deploy code, we SCP an archive file to the NFS server and extract it. Since upgrading RedHat 6, when we deploy our code the webserver execute "stale" PHP files until touch is run on the PHP files. We thought that APC might be causing a problem, but the issue exists, even after clearing the opcode cache. Any ideas on how to diagnose why the stale PHP code is being executed?

• How to share code as open source?

  I have a little program that I wrote for a local group to handle a somewhat complicated scheduling issue for scheduling multiple meetings in multiple locations that change weekly according to certain criteria. It's a niche need, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other groups that could use software like this. In fact, we've had requests from others for directions on starting a group like this, and if their groups get as big, they might also want special software to help with scheduling. I plan to continue developing the program and eventually make it an online web app, but a very simple alpha version is completed as a console app. I'd like to make it available as open source, but I have no idea what kind of process I should go through first. Right now, all I have is Java code, not even unit-tested thoroughly. I haven't shown the code to anyone else. There is no documentation. I don't know where I would put the code so others could access it. I don't know anything about licensing it. I don't know what kind of support people will expect from me if I release it as open source. I have no idea what else I should worry about. Can someone outline for me (or post an article(s) that outlines) the process of taking open source software from "coded" to "completed / available"? I really don't want to embarrass myself by doing things weirdly.

  I started weeding through my site's search results from Google today, using a site: search, to determine if there are any links that cause 404s and thus need redirecting. To my amazement I noticed numerous https:// results relating to various pages. My site doesn't have a SSL certificate, doesn't serve such pages, doesn't internally link to https:// pages, doesn't include any such files in its sitemap.xml and, for all of these, never has. I decided to do a Google search for https://<my site> and found one site that incorrectly refers to the root of my site with a https:// prefix - I will try to contact them to get them to correct this. I'm not sure however how Googlebot managed to index the non-root files as https://. I can't find any external links to them and surely, without certification, Googlebot should have stalled at the first request? I've just added the following lines to the site's .htaccess (although the surfer still has to navigate through the browser's "This site is a security risk. Abandon hope all ye who enter here!" message(s) first to get there): RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.<my site>.org/$1 [R=301,L] replacing <my site> with my domain name. My big question is this though - I would like to use the Google Webmaster Tools Remove URLs feature to remove the https:// pages from the index. Can I be guaranteed that this will only remove the https:// versions of each relevant page and not the valid http:// versions?   Hi, Recently my wireless stopped working on my Debian testing system. It just doesn't connect. The best I get (only after a reboot) is that it says it did connect, but failed to get IP address. But usually it just tries to connect, disconnects straight away, connects again etc. so it never manages to associate correctly. I am sure it did work about a month ago, stopped working after recent upgrades from the repository. Any ideas how to find the issue and fix it?

• Dreamweaver CS5 Test server works but cannot connect to host server through files window

  I've been managing this site for a long time and update coupons on it approximately every 60 days. For some reason, I'm not having problems: I opened DW CS5 today and made the changes necessary to update coupons. I was able to connect to the host server with no problem but most of my coupon images were not showing up. DW tells me I have 70 broken links, which can't be the case because I've reviewed them. Some links work and are the same as the broken links other than the file name. Unable to figure it out, I thought maybe restarting my Mac would help. However, upon logging back into DW, I am now unable to connect to the host server. I get an FTP error notice that the file doesn't exist or there is a permissions problem. Funny thing is, I can connect successfully if I test the connection through the Site Management window. I have connected to my host server through FileZilla and see all the files there, unfortunately, I still can't get the web pages to display the coupons. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, what is the solution? I feel like this is probably a simple fix, but I cannot for the life of me determine what it is! If anyone knows a solution, I'd really appreciate the help! -Toni
