• Adjust timezone of an AVM Fritz!Box 7390

  It's been a while that I purchased an AVM Fritz!Box 7390 but since I'm using this 'PABX' here in Mauritius, I'm not really happy about the wrong time in the logs or handsets connected. Lately, I had some spare time to address this issue, and the following article describes how to adjust the timezone settings in general. The original idea came from an FAQ found in c't 21/11 (for a 7270 written in German language) but I added a couple of things based on other resources online. The following tutorial may be valid for other models, too. Use your common sense and think before you act. Brief introduction to AVM Fritz!Box devices The Fritz!Box series of AVM has been around for more than a decade and those little 'red boxes' have a high level of versatility for your small office or home. High-speed connections, secure WLAN and convenient telephony make a home network out of any network. Whether it's a computer, tablet or smartphone, any device can be connected to the FRITZ!Box. And best of all, installation is so simple that users will be online in a matter of minutes. If you want to have peace of your mind in your small network then a Fritz!Box is the easiest way to achieve that. I'm using my box primarly as WiFi access point, VoIP gateway and media server but only because it came in second after my Linux system. Limitations in the administrative Web UI Unfortunately, there are no possibilities to adjust the timezone settings in the Web UI at all - even not in Expert mode. I assume that this is part of the 'simplification' provided by AVM's design team. That's okay, as long as you reside in Central Europe, and the implicit time handling is correct for your location. Adjusting the timezone I got my device through an order at Amazon Germany already some time ago, and honestly I wasn't bothered too much about the pre-configured (fixed) timezone setting - CET or CEST depending on daylight saving. But you know, it's that kind of splinter at the back of your head that keeps nagging and bothering you indirectly. So, finally I sat down yesterday evening and did a quick research on how to change the timezone. Even though there are a number of results, I read the FAQ from the c't magazine first, as I consider this as a trusted and safe source of information. Of course, it is most important to avoid to 'brick' your device. You've been warned - No support Tinkering with the configuration of any AVM devices seems to be a violation of their official support channels. So, be warned and continue onlyin case that you're sure about what you are going to do. The following solutions are 'as-is' and they worked for my box flawlessly but may cause an issue in your case. Don't blame me... Solution 1 - Backup, modify and restore That's the way as described in the c't article and a couple of other forum postings I found online, mainly from Australia. Login the administrative Web UI and navigate to 'System => Einstellungen sichern' (System => Backup configuration) and store your current configuration to a local file on your machine. Despite some online postings it is not necessary to specify a password in order to secure or encrypt your backup. IMHO, this only adds another unnecessary layer of complexity to the process. Anyway, next you should create a another copy of your settings and keep it unmodified. That's our safety net to restore the current settings in case that we might have to issue a factory setting reset to the box. Now, open the configuration file with an advanced text editor which is capable to deal with Unix carriage returns properly - Windows Notepad doesn't do the job but Wordpad or Notepad++. Personally, I don't care and simply use geany, gedit or nano on Linux. In total there are 3 modifications that we have to apply to the configuration file - one new line and two adjustments. First, we have to add an instruction near the top of file that overrides the device internal checksum validation. Without this line, your settings won't be accepted. Caution: The drectives are case-sensitve and your outcome should read something like this: **** FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7390 CONFIGURATION EXPORTPassword=$$$$<ignore>FirmwareVersion=84.05.52CONFIG_INSTALL_TYPE=iks_16MB_xilinx_4eth_2ab_isdn_nt_te_pots_wlan_usb_host_dect_64415OEM=avmCountry=049Language=deNoChecks=yes**** CFGFILE:ar7.cfg/* * /var/flash/ar7.cfg * Mon Jul 29 10:49:18 2013 */ar7cfg {... Then search for the expression 'timezone' and you should find a section like this one (~ line 1113): timezone_manual {        enabled = no;        offset = 0;        dst_enabled = no;        TZ_string = "";        name = "";} We would like to manually handle the timezone setting in our device and therefore we have to enable it and set the proper value for Mauritius. The configuration block should like so afterwards: timezone_manual {        enabled = yes;        offset = 0;        dst_enabled = no;        TZ_string = "MUT-4";        name = "";} We specify the designation and the offset in hours of the timezone we would like to have. Caution: The offset indicates the value one has to add to the local time to arrive at UTC. More details are described in the Explanation of TZ strings. Mauritius has GMT+4 which means that we have to substract 4 hours from the local time to have UTC. Finally, we restore the modified configuration file via the administrative Web UI under 'System => Einstellungen sichern => Wiederherstellen' (System => Backup configuration => Restore). This triggers a reboot of the device, so please be patient and wait until the Web UI displays the login dialog again. Good luck! Solution 2 - Telnet A more elegant, read: technically interesting, way to adjust configuration settings in your Fritz!Box is to access it directly through Telnet. By default AVM disables that protocol channel and you have to enable it with a connected telephone. In order to activate the telnet service dial the following combination: #96*7* #96*8* (to disable telnet again after work has been completed) If you're using an AVM handset like the Fritz!Fon then you will receive a confirmation message on the display like so: telnetd ein Next, depending on your favourite operating system, you either launch a Command prompt in Windows or a terminal in Linux, get your Admin password ready, and you connect to your box like so: $ telnet fritz.box Trying 192.168.1.1...Connected to fritz.box.Escape character is '^]'.password: BusyBox v1.19.3 (2012-10-12 14:52:09 CEST) built-in shell (ash)Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.ermittle die aktuelle TTYtty is "/dev/pts/0"Console Ausgaben auf dieses Terminal umgelenkt# That's it, you are connected and we can continue to change the configuration manually. In order to adjust the timezone setting we have to open the ar7.cfg file. As we are now operating in a specialised environment, we only have limited capabilities at hand. One of those is a reduced version of vi - nvi. Let's open a second browser window with the fine manual page of nvi and start to edit our configuration file: # nvi /var/flash/ar7.cfg In our configuration file, we have to navigate to the timezone directives. The easiest way is to search for the expression 'timezone' by typing in the following: /timezone    (press Enter/Return) Now, we should see the exact lines of code like in the backed up version: timezone_manual {                                                                            enabled = no;                                                          offset = 0;                                                         dst_enabled = no;                                                   TZ_string = "";                                                     name = "";                                                        } And of course, we apply the same changes as described in the previous section: timezone_manual {                                                                            enabled = yes;                                                          offset = 0;                                                         dst_enabled = no;                                                   TZ_string = "MUT-4";                                                     name = "";                                                        } Finally, we have to write our changes back to the file and apply the new settings. :wq    (press Enter/Return) # ar7cfgchanged That's it! Finally, close the telnet session by pressing Ctrl+] and enter 'quit'. Additional ideas... There are a couple of more possibilities to enhance and to extend the usability of a Fritz!Box. There are lots of resources available on the net, but I'd like to name a few here. Especially for Linux users it is essential to be able to connect to any device remotely in a  safe and secure way. And the installation of a SSH server on the box would be a first step to improve this situation, also to avoid to run telnet after all. Sometimes, there might be problems in your VoIP connections, feel free to adjust the settings of codecs and connection handling, too. I guess, you'll get the idea... The only frontiers are in your mind.

• Selling Federal Enterprise Architecture (EA)

  Selling Federal Enterprise Architecture A taxonomy of subject areas, from which to develop a prioritized marketing and communications plan to evangelize EA activities within and among US Federal Government organizations and constituents. Any and all feedback is appreciated, particularly in developing and extending this discussion as a tool for use – more information and details are also available. "Selling" the discipline of Enterprise Architecture (EA) in the Federal Government (particularly in non-DoD agencies) is difficult, notwithstanding the general availability and use of the Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework (FEAF) for some time now, and the relatively mature use of the reference models in the OMB Capital Planning and Investment (CPIC) cycles. EA in the Federal Government also tends to be a very esoteric and hard to decipher conversation – early apologies to those who agree to continue reading this somewhat lengthy article. Alignment to the FEAF and OMB compliance mandates is long underway across the Federal Departments and Agencies (and visible via tools like PortfolioStat and ITDashboard.gov – but there is still a gap between the top-down compliance directives and enablement programs, and the bottom-up awareness and effective use of EA for either IT investment management or actual mission effectiveness. "EA isn't getting deep enough penetration into programs, components, sub-agencies, etc.", verified a panelist at the most recent EA Government Conference in DC. Newer guidance from OMB may be especially difficult to handle, where bottom-up input can't be accurately aligned, analyzed and reported via standardized EA discipline at the Agency level – for example in addressing the new (for FY13) Exhibit 53D "Agency IT Reductions and Reinvestments" and the information required for "Cloud Computing Alternatives Evaluation" (supporting the new Exhibit 53C, "Agency Cloud Computing Portfolio"). Therefore, EA must be "sold" directly to the communities that matter, from a coordinated, proactive messaging perspective that takes BOTH the Program-level value drivers AND the broader Agency mission and IT maturity context into consideration. Selling EA means persuading others to take additional time and possibly assign additional resources, for a mix of direct and indirect benefits – many of which aren't likely to be realized in the short-term. This means there's probably little current, allocated budget to work with; ergo the challenge of trying to sell an "unfunded mandate". Also, the concept of "Enterprise" in large Departments like Homeland Security tends to cross all kinds of organizational boundaries – as Richard Spires recently indicated by commenting that "...organizational boundaries still trump functional similarities. Most people understand what we're trying to do internally, and at a high level they get it. The problem, of course, is when you get down to them and their system and the fact that you're going to be touching them...there's always that fear factor," Spires said. It is quite clear to the Federal IT Investment community that for EA to meet its objective, understandable, relevant value must be measured and reported using a repeatable method – as described by GAO's recent report "Enterprise Architecture Value Needs To Be Measured and Reported". What's not clear is the method or guidance to sell this value. In fact, the current GAO "Framework for Assessing and Improving Enterprise Architecture Management (Version 2.0)", a.k.a. the "EAMMF", does not include words like "sell", "persuade", "market", etc., except in reference ("within Core Element 19: Organization business owner and CXO representatives are actively engaged in architecture development") to a brief section in the CIO Council's 2001 "Practical Guide to Federal Enterprise Architecture", entitled "3.3.1. Develop an EA Marketing Strategy and Communications Plan." Furthermore, Core Element 19 of the EAMMF is advised to be applied in "Stage 3: Developing Initial EA Versions". This kind of EA sales campaign truly should start much earlier in the maturity progress, i.e. in Stages 0 or 1. So, what are the understandable, relevant benefits (or value) to sell, that can find an agreeable, participatory audience, and can pave the way towards success of a longer-term, funded set of EA mechanisms that can be methodically measured and reported? Pragmatic benefits from a useful EA that can help overcome the fear of change? And how should they be sold? Following is a brief taxonomy (it's a taxonomy, to help organize SME support) of benefit-related subjects that might make the most sense, in creating the messages and organizing an initial "engagement plan" for evangelizing EA "from within". An EA "Sales Taxonomy" of sorts. We're not boiling the ocean here; the subjects that are included are ones that currently appear to be urgently relevant to the current Federal IT Investment landscape. Note that successful dialogue in these topics is directly usable as input or guidance for actually developing early-stage, "Fit-for-Purpose" (a DoDAF term) Enterprise Architecture artifacts, as prescribed by common methods found in most EA methodologies, including FEAF, TOGAF, DoDAF and our own Oracle Enterprise Architecture Framework (OEAF). The taxonomy below is organized by (1) Target Community, (2) Benefit or Value, and (3) EA Program Facet - as in: "Let's talk to (1: Community Member) about how and why (3: EA Facet) the EA program can help with (2: Benefit/Value)". Once the initial discussion targets and subjects are approved (that can be measured and reported), a "marketing and communications plan" can be created. A working example follows the Taxonomy. This targeted, informed, practical sales approach should result in additional buy-in and participation, additional EA information contribution and model validation, development of more SMEs and quick "proof points" (with real-life testing) to bolster the case for EA. The proof point here is a successful, timely procurement that satisfies not only the external mandate and external oversight review, but also meets internal EA compliance/conformance goals and therefore is more transparently useful across the community. In short, if sold effectively, the EA will perform and be recognized. EA won’t therefore be used only for compliance, but also (according to a validated, stated purpose) to directly influence decisions and outcomes. • Restructuring a large Chrome Extension/WebApp

  I have a very complex Chrome Extension that has gotten too large to maintain in its current format. I'd like to restructure it, but I'm 15 and this is the first webapp or extension of it's type I've built so I have no idea how to do it. TL;DR: I have a large/complex webapp I'd like to restructure and I don't know how to do it. Should I follow my current restructure plan (below)? Does that sound like a good starting point, or is there a different approach that I'm missing? Should I not do any of the things I listed? The app also uses a lot on its own. Code readability: At this point I can't follow what's being called in the code. While rewriting the code I plan on properly commenting everything. Module interdependence: Right now modules call each other a lot, AFAIK that's not good at all since any change you make to one module could affect countless others. Fault tolerance: There's very little fault tolerance or error handling right now. If a widget is causing the rest of the page to stop rendering the user should at least be able to remove it. Speed is currently not an issue and I'd like to keep it that way. How I think I should do it The restructure should be done using Backbone.js and events that call modules (i.e. on storage.loaded = init). Modules should each go in their own file, I'm thinking there should be a set of core files that all modules can rely on and call directly and everything else should be event based. Widget structure should be kept largely the same, but maybe they should also be split into their own files. AFAIK you can't load all templates in a folder, therefore they need to stay inline. Grunt should be used to merge all modules, plugins and widgets into one file. Templates should also all be precompiled. Question: Should I follow my current restructure plan? Does that sound like a good starting point, or is there a different approach that I'm missing? Should I not do any of the things I listed? Do applications written with Backbone tend to be more intensive (memory and speed) than ones written in Vanilla JS? Also, can I expect to improve this with a proper restructure or is my current code about as good as can be expected?

The next step, and the only reason for the above experiment, is to create some JPA entities and expose them via RESTful webservices created on EJB methods, for consumption into an HTML5 application via a Backbone.js script very similar to the above.

• Getting an ASP.MVC2/VS2010 application to work in IIS 7.5

  I've recently downloaded beta 2 of VS2010 and started playing with ASP.NET MVC2. Initial development was done with Casini, but now I wanted to run the application from IIS 7.5 (I'm running Windows 7). I've installed the IIS6 metabase compatiblity and I run VS2010 as administrator so I can use the "Create Virtual Directory" button from the "Web" tab of the project settings. This created the web application entry in IIS, but it doesn't work. When I go to the main page (http://localhost/MyMvcApp/) I get a HTTP 403 error. When I go directly to one of the sub-pages (http://localhost/MyMvcApp/Home/) I get an HTTP 404. So I guess for some reason the URL routing isn't working. I've already added UrlRouting as a module and a handler to the web.config. In my searches this is offered as a solution for some similair problems. But for me this still doesn't work.   I am attempting to write a Windows Desktop App (using WCF) that is a consumer of a web service. The application: Sends a SOAP message to a British Government Server to get an authentication token based on the arugments passed Retrieves a response from that server in the form of a string which contains the authentication token. I have a template of the SOAP message from the British Government, and a WSDL file for the service. What I have tried Add a service reference using the WSDL file. I received the following error: URI formats are not supported. Add a Web Reference using the URL of the service. I received the following error: The request failed with HTTP status 405: Method Not Allowed. Send the SOAP request using a POST. The Call to GetResponse() threw a 500 External Server Error. • ASP.NET MVC Checkbox Group

  I am trying to formulate a work-around for the lack of a "checkbox group" in ASP.NET MVC. The typical way to implement this is to have check boxes of the same name, each with the value it represents. <input type="checkbox" name="n" value=1 /> <input type="checkbox" name="n" value=2 /> <input type="checkbox" name="n" value=3 /> When submitted, it will comma delimit all values to the request item "n".. so Request["n"] == "1,2,3" if all three are checked when submitted. In ASP.NET MVC, you can have a parameter of n as an array to accept this post. public ActionResult ActionName( int[] n ) { ... } All of the above works fine. The problem I have is that when validation fails, the check boxes are not restored to their checked state. Any suggestions. If you try to access the various properties of the JavaBean after the transaction that loaded it has been committed, you'll get an exception, a LazyInitializationException, as Hibernate no longer has a valid transactional context to use to hit the database. But with my experiment, using hibernate 3.6, and postgres 9, it doesnt throw any exception at all. Am i missing something ? Can you please help me as to what i am doing wrong. And yes if i send just batchProgressMetricsList.get(0) in MAV it just works fine.

• PayPal IPN - having trouble accessing session data?

  Hello, all. I'm having issues with PayPal IPN integration where it seems I cannot get my solution to read session variables. Basically, in my shop module script, I store the customer's details as provided by PayPal to an orders table. However, I also wish to save products ordered in a transaction to a separate table linked by the order ID. However, it's the second part of the script that's not working, where I loop through the products in the session and then save them to the orders_products table. Is there a reason why the session data not being read?   I added the authlogic_facebook_connect plugin to my project and I'm now having problem running my cucumber test because of a NoMethodError. undefined method `set_facebook_session' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) In authlogic_facebook_connect/Session.rb the method "authenticating_with_facebook_connect?" is called as some sort of callback and the controller is defined but is missing the 'set_facebook_session' method. def authenticating_with_facebook_connect? controller.set_facebook_session attempted_record.nil? && errors.empty? && controller.facebook_session end I don't understand why the cucumber test is not loading the controller with this method. Three distinct versions of the same product are displaying on the page. (2) The :uniq option is not working for varieties. I don't have validation set up on this yet, and if the user enters the same variety twice, it does appear on the page. In the previous working version, this was not the case. The result I need is that only one product for any given ID displays, and all varieties associated with that ID display along with such unique product. One thing that sticks out to me is the sql call in the most recent log output. It's adding 'count' to the distinct call. I'm not sure why it's doing that or whether it might be an indication of an issue.
