  More and more computers are shipping sans-disc drive leading many industry watchers to proclaim the optical disc an endangered species on its way out. • Tracking referrals between profiles on the same domain in Google Analytics

  I have a website at mydomain.com that uses Analytics. I have a blog that resides at mydomain.com/blog/, which also uses Analytics They are on different profiles. The main site uses something like: _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-6']); While the blog uses: _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-7']); _gaq.push(['_setCookiePath', '/blog/']); My issues is that this seems not to track referrals from the blog through to the main site when, for instance, the logo which links to the main site is clicked. Ideally, I would like the clicks of this logo to report that the source was mydomain.com/blog/, but because they are at the same domain they seem to register as direct traffic. Have I missed a step in my configuration, or will I have to resort to linking to something like mydomain.com?ref=blog? Thank you.

  I'm creating a fairly large site. Will my links appear spammy if I use the same word as in the pathfile in the url? For example: www.example.com/apples/great-apple-recipes www.example.com/apples/fresh-apple-pie www.example.com/apples/delicious-apple-turnovers I do not want my link to appear spammy. But is it ok if the keyword is almost always the same as in the pathfile on a huge site? Does the pathfile count as part of the keyword? Also, how many words in total should a url (including pathfile etc...) be?

• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

  Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. So this is fusion, R-Pi, Azure, Hardware and iOS. Details to follow as this plan unfolds.

• Using gerrit (or similar tool) on a team where multiple devs work on a single feature

  We have a team of roughly ~8 devs who regularly work on the same feature over the course of a 3 week sprint. It isn't quite pair programming, but in our current workflow devs regularly push up incomplete code for a colleague to complete. This worked fine before we introduced Gerrit, but now our commits need to represent chunks of test-passing, complete, logical functionality, and so the model breaks. My only idea is to have everybody push up to a separate, untracked branch up until the functionality is ready for review, then squash everything into commits that make sense and push up. Is there another Gerrit-ized workflow that could work? I know this is a widely discussed topic on Google Groups, and that there has recently been some discussion of Gerrit topic reviews, but I wanted to see if there is anybody out there using Gerrit in this way, and what the suggested workflow would be.

• GitHub OS project how to have a good version and a work in progress version

  I have started my own OS application, I am hosting it on GitHub. My problem is that I push changes to the repository from more than one location so sometimes I want to work on it and sometimes I can't always finish something in time but I would still like to push it anyway so I can fetch it later from my other location. I'd like to be able to somehow have a stable version and have the master branch be a 'work in progress'. How do I do this? Is there some button I can push that will take the code from my master branch and make it into a zip file in my downloads tab and call it a version or should I do this by hand? Would it be better to have the master branch be nice and neat and have a separate branch to play with and then merge the two when the time is right? Would this not cause more problems in the merging phase?

  I have a requirement for a workflow which I am trying to model as a state machine, I see that there is more than one outcome of a given transition(or activity). Is it valid for a state machine to have more than one possible states, but only one state will be true at a given time? Note: This is my first attempt to model a state machine. Eg. might be: s1-t1-s2 s1-t1-s3 s1-t1-s4 where s1, s2, s3, s4 are states and t1 is transition/activity. A fictitious real world example might be: For a human, there can be two states: hungry, not hungry A basket can have only one item from: apple, orange.   A simplification... A building has an array of apartment objects. Each apartment has a single currentTenant. These tenants are of type Person. Note that currentTenant doesn't have a reference to the apartment, so can't send information back up the chain. When a tenant has a plumbing issue he raises an NSNotification: [nc postNotificationName:@"PlumbingIssue" object:self]; Each Apartment observes notifications ONLY FROM it's own current tenant (this is set up when the apartment is built, before there is a current tenant): [nc addObserver:self selector:@selector(alertBuildingManager:) name:@"PlumbingIssue" object:[self currentTenant]; When the apartment receives a notification from it's own currentTenant, it sends it's own notification, "PlumberRequired", along with the apartment number and the currentTenant in an NSDictionary. Apartment observes these notifications, which it will take from any apartment (or other object): [nc addObserver:self selector:@selector(callPlumber) name:@"PlumberRequired" object:nil]; Is there something I could be getting fundamentally wrong here? What's happening is that the apartment is receiving notifications from any and all currentTenants, rather than jus it's own. Sorry that the actual code is a bit too unwieldy to post. Was just wondering if there's a gap in my understanding about observing notifications from a particular sender?

  Using SQLalchemy I want to perform a left outer join and filter out rows that DO have a match in the joined table. I'm sending push notifications, so I have a Notification table. This means I also have a ExpiredDeviceId table to store device_ids that are no longer valid. (I don't want to just delete the affected notifications as the user might later re-install the app, at which point the notifications should resume according to Apple's docs.) CREATE TABLE Notification (device_id TEXT, time DATETIME); CREATE TABLE ExpiredDeviceId (device_id TEXT PRIMARY KEY, expiration_time DATETIME); Note: there may be multiple Notifications per device_id. There is no "Device" table for each device. So when doing SELECT FROM Notification I should filter accordingly. I can do it in SQL: SELECT * FROM Notification LEFT OUTER JOIN ExpiredDeviceId ON Notification.device_id = ExpiredDeviceId.device_id WHERE expiration_time == NULL But how can I do it in SQLalchemy? sess.query( Notification, ExpiredDeviceId ).outerjoin( (ExpiredDeviceId, Notification.device_id == ExpiredDeviceId.device_id) ).filter( ??? ) Alternately I could do this with a device_id NOT IN (SELECT device_id FROM ExpiredDeviceId) clause, but that seems way less efficient.

  I have made a small ASP.NET website. It uses sqlcachedependency The SQL Server Service Broker for the current database is not enabled, and as a result query notifications are not supported. Please enable the Service Broker for this database if you wish to use notifications. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.InvalidOperationException: The SQL Server Service Broker for the current database is not enabled, and as a result query notifications are not supported. Please enable the Service Broker for this database if you wish to use notifications. Source Error: Line 12: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDependency.Start(connString); This is the erroneous line in my global.asax. However, in sql server (2005), I enabled service broker like so (I connect and run the SQL Server service when I debug my site): ALTER DATABASE mynewdatabase SET ENABLE_BROKER with rollback immediate And this was successful. • iPad Safari's mapping of mouse events to touch events in image-maps

  My website makes extensive use of image-maps. The images are of pages from a medieval manuscript. The mouseOver event of the AREA tags has a tooltip attached to it, which displays a modern typographic transcription of the ancient script for the line the mouse is hovering over. I just checked my website out on the iPad at the Apple store. The iPad is many respects a joy to use, however, I am wondering about Apple's mapping of the mouseEvents to the finger-touch events. Apple probably had a good reason for doing things as they did, but their choices seem counterintuitive an overly complicated to me. Specifically, the iPad Safari browser clearly was responding to both fingerDown and fingerTap, and in different ways. When I tapped an area of the image-map, the tooltip wired to the mouse-over event pf the AREA tag was displayed, and remained visible until I tapped somewhere else. When I held my finger down on an area of the image-map, the area changed color. So if iPad Safari detects a mouseOver eventhandler, it executes the mouseOver code and apparently prevents the "click" event from propagating, so that if you also have something wired to the click event, it doesn't work? Is that right? But more importantly, why isn't fingerDown the iPad-Safari counterpart for mouseOver? FingerDown seems a more likely candidate than Tap when mapping the mousePOver event. I would have expected things to be mapped in this way: MouseClick : FingerTap (i.e. finger down and then immediately up) MouseOver : FingerDown (finger down and stays on the spot) If Apple had treated fingerDown as the counterpart to mouseOver, then the tooltip could be displayed upon FingerDown and made invisible again on fingerUp, which would be the counterpart to mouseOut. Perhaps someone could enlighten me about the thinking process that led Apple to these particular mouse-to-touch event-mappings? Thanks

  HI All, Has anybody been able to extract the device tokens from the binary data that iPhone APNS feedback service returns using PHP? I am looking for something similar to what is been implementented using python here http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en&sa=N&cd=2&ct=rc#m5eOMDWiKUs/APNSWrapper/%5F%5Finit%5F%5F.py&q=feedback.push.apple.com As per the Apple documentation, I know that the first 4 bytes are timestamp, next 2 bytes is the length of the token and rest of the bytes are the actual token in binary format. (http://developer.apple.com/IPhone/library/documentation/NetworkingInternet/Conceptual/RemoteNotificationsPG/CommunicatingWIthAPS/CommunicatingWIthAPS.html#//apple%5Fref/doc/uid/TP40008194-CH101-SW3) I am successfully able to extract the timestamp from the data feedback service returns, but the device token that I get after i convert to hexadecimal using the PHP's built in method bin2hex() is actually different than original device token. I am doing something silly in the conversion. Can anybody help me out if they have already implemented APNS feedback service using PHP? TIA, -Anish

The provisions look in order, and the app builds to my iphone 3gs just fine. The app used to build just fine to my ipod touch, so I'm flustered what could have changed and wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what might be causing this issue. The build logs are below.   I'm having a bit of trouble with John Resig's Micro templating. Can anyone help me with why it isn't working? Apart from changing the template syntax blocks from <% % to {% %} I haven't changed anything. This is from Firefox.
