  Hi, I need a Javascript random number shuffler for my website. Seems simple, but I can not figure out how to do it. Can anyone help me out? I have the following array of numbers: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 I would like to be able to have these numbers shuffled randomly. Like the following: 3 6 4 2 9 5 1 8 7 or 4 1 7 3 5 9 2 6 8 So, specifically, I would like a function that takes in an array of numbers (1 - n) and then returns that same array of numbers - shuffled randomly with different calls to the function. Maybe a noob function, but can't seem to figure it out. Thanks! NOTE: Thanks for the clarification on "Shuffle". Have found a lot more online about this with that term.

• How can I make a permanently updated copy of a file in a different place to the original file?

  I use two computers, a Linux one for coding and building and a Windows one which has the programming application to load the built program onto the hardware. Both computers have access to a network drive which I use to pass the files from Linux to Windows. My problem is, that every time I build I have to copy the files from where the are created to the network drive. How can I make some sort of file in the network drive on Ubuntu that always mirrors the file which is built in the different location, like a pointer? Thanks!

Do you have any knowledge from where can I start to develop as a Linux user? • Has anyone got a simple step by step Mozilla plugin tutorial.

  I'm trying to create a Mozilla browser plugin for the sole purpose of detecting with javascript whether or not an application that I have written is installed. This was inspired by another stackoverflow question and answer on a similar subject. All I want really is a HelloWorld type example as what I need to write will be even simpler than that. There is a lot of information on the Mozilla website, but as a plugin noob and a C++ novice I'm experiencing information overload. I just need a step by step "this is how to create your first simple plugin". I have already written the IE equivalent by following this ATL tutorial. This is the kind of level of guide that I would ideally like to find. Please note, this is specifically about Mozilla plugins and not extensions - Googling this subject brings up a lot of information about extensions in addition to plugins.

• My Visual Studio 2010 Dark Theme

  Everyone has their preferences for their development IDE. Colors, fonts, tools, keyboard shortcuts, etc. Im certainly no different. I really prefer the darker themes over the white background. The brightness of the white background wears on me after a while. The dark theme sets me in a mellow coding mood :) I dont generally keep a theme exactly as is for a long time. Instead I start with a theme and I tinker with it as I find things I dont like. Ive taken my latest theme and uploaded it here. • Creating CCD document from scratch (JAVA)

  Hi, I'm trying to build a CCD document. My application has some raw data which has to be converted into a CCD document. And I've no idea where I should start from!! From this thread I learned that MDHT and Braid can be used to create a CCD document. But thats all I could grasp. I thought that I need a CCD XSD, a java library which will transform my raw data into a CCD document using this XSD ( or may be the library itself takes care of it ). But I'm stuck at both. I suppose the CCD XSD has to be purchased. If I get hold of the XSD, how should I proceed ahead? I got really confused reading the Braid and MDHT sites. Sorry, I'm a complete nOOb in this domain. Can anyone guide me?

• Working as Test Engineer and looking to move into Identity Management Technology. Possible?

  I have been working as Test Engineer for past 2.5 year. The project is related to Identity Management and I am in love with the technology. I want to move into the same field. I don't aim to be a hard core coder but rather an analyst or an IDM architect. Is it realistically possible to do so? I see some possible issues, since the field is fairly new in India and for the time being I don't have coding/deployment experience at all. • Game Physics: Implementing Normal Reaction from ground correctly

  I am implementing a simple side scrolling platform game. I am using the following strategy while coding the physics: Gravity constantly acts on the character. When the character is touching the floor, a normal reaction is exerted by the floor. I face the following problem: If the character is initially at a height, he acquires velocity in the -Y direction. Thus, when he hits the floor, he falls through even though normal force is being exerted. I could fix this by setting the Y velocity to 0, and placing him above the floor if he has collided with it. But this often leads to the character getting stuck in the floor or bouncing around it. Is there a better approach ?

• php question regarding arrays

  Hi there, I'm a (complete) php noob and need a little help with something. I'm working on a project whereby a user can select up to 6 categories via a form (I'm using ExpressionEngine). The output is like this: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3" ...and so on. The user can select up to 6 categories on that form. What I need: even if my result is 3 categories I need to have 6 'cells' - for want of a better word - even if they're empty: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3","","","" I've tried this: <?php $str = '(output goes here)'; print_r(explode(',', $str, 6)); ?> ...but the output give me: Array ( [0] => Cat1 [1] => Cat2 [2] => Cat3 [3] => [4] => [5] => ) How do I get from that to this: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3","","","" Does this make sense?   Our team of developers are going to start holding monthly meetings for the purposes of cross training and knowledge improvement. We're looking for ideas for topics to discuss. We've already made a list of some obvious ones, such as discussions/training on specific applications, proper usage of TFS for source control, bug tracking and code reviews, coding standards, and corporate architecture. The problem we're having is that we are a cross-platform development team so we don't want to look at topics that only apply to certain members of the team (Sql, .NET, reporting, third party apps, etc). We'll use sub-team meetings for those. So what other topics that would apply across a broad development team would be good for these training sessions?

  Do I need to go to Uni to get a job as a Junior C# coder? I'm 26 and have been working in Games (Production) for 6 years and I am thinking of a change, I've had exposure to VB6, VBA, HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript over the past few years and did a web design NCFE at College, but other than that, nothing else! I'm teaching myself C# at the moment with books and I was wondering 'how much' I need to learn and also how I can improve my chances of getting a programming job! Am I a late started to learn coding? • Opening Another Xib form an Xib

  Not a Noob as yesterday, but still green. I have been playing around with the code that Elisabeth Robson has put together HERE. I have a UITabbarcontoller and a IUNavigationController they seem to work fine. I have a UITableviewController to which I loads my NSMutable array. The user clicks a cell and didSelectRowAtIndexPath xib is loaded onto the stack. I put a 'Learn More' button on the current xib(BookDetailView). I've tried a few approaches to load a newer xib when the 'Learn More' button is pressed but have failed. Ive Tried IBAction and Pushing the Newer xib to the top. Do I need to create another view controller? Thanks for looking.

  Possible Duplicate: should i concentrate on logical and puzzles part in programming, i want to be a web (flex)developer? I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. Since I'm a student, I've no experience in developing algorithms and tough program solving? I'd like to be a web developer. • Books and stories on programming culture, specifically in the 80's / early 90's

  I've enjoyed a number of (fiction/non-fiction books) about hacker culture and running a software business in the 80's, 90's. For some reason things seemed so much more exciting back then. Examples are: Microserfs (Douglas Coupland) Accidental Empires (Robert X. Cringely Almost Pefect (W.E. Peterson, online!) Coders at Work (Peter Seibel) Today I'm an entrepeneur and programmer. Back in the 80's a I was a young geek hacking DOS TSR's and coding GWBasic / QBasic. In the 90's I was a C.S. university student, experiencing the rise of the Internet world wide. When reading these books running a software business seemed so much more fun than it is nowadays. Things used to be so much simpler, opportunities seemed to be everywhere and the startups seemed to work with much more real problems (inventing spreadsheets, writing word processors in assembly on 6 different platforms) than all our current web 2.0 social networking toys. Does anyone share these feelings? Does anyone have any good (personal) stories from back then or know of other good books to read?

• Installing Sass on Gentoo

  I've been trying to install Sass on Gentoo, but it hasn't been going too well. Unfortunately, the latest version of Sass in portage is 3.1.21. What I want to use Sass for requires at least Sass 3.2, which is available through rubygems. What I've tried: emerge dev-ruby/sass (installs an old version) gem install sass The second command appears to install the Sass gem. However, I do not use Rails or Ruby in any other aspect apart from Sass, so the gem appears useless to me. In addition, I do not know where gems are installed to or how to use them (I'm a ruby noob.) All I want to do is call sass from the command line. Are there any ways to obtain an up-to-date version of Sass which I can just use from the command line? Cheers.

• CLLocation is not nil but trying to print it out throws EXC_BAD_ACCESS

  Sorry, this may be a noob question but I'm working with CoreLocation and this has be stumped. I'm looking up the currentLocation using a singleton that was recommended on this site and when I get the currentLocation object, it returns true to a not nil check. However, when I try to print out its description, it throws EXC_BAD_ACCESS. //WORKS Current location 8.6602e-290 NSLog(@"Current location %g",currLoc); //DOESN'T WORK NSLog(@"Current location %@",[currLoc description]); //DOESN'T WORK - Is this causing the description to fail as well? NSLog(@"Current location %g",currLoc.coordinate.latitude); Why am I able to see something on the first one but not the others? BTW, this is being run on a 3.1.2 simulator Thanks.

• Core Data fetchedresultscontroller question : what is "sections" for?

  Hi, I'm trying to get to know Core Data (I'm a noob at iPhone development) and in order to do this I'm trying to get an object from the fetchedresultscontroller and NSlog it's name (a property of the object). I tried to do it like this: NSArray *ar = [NSArray arrayWithArray:[fetchedResultsController sections]]; Task *t = [ar objectAtIndex:0]; NSLog(@"%@", t.taskName); However, the app crashed with this error: the app crashes with the error Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '* -[_NSDefaultSectionInfo taskName]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3d1f670' I have since learned that you need to use the fetched objects property for this, but then what is sections for? Thanks for any help, sorry if this is a supremely stupid question. I've looked over the documentation but still don't understand.

• Are programmers tied to their code?

  Assuming you are working for a company or in a team of developers, is the code bound to the person who did it? When someone develops a particular functionnality or an area of the application, is this person the only one who can, is allowed or is just able to make changes to it? I personnally think that a well-done piece of code or program should be easily modified by any programmers, but what about what you see in your environment? At my work, I'd say that the majority of the code can be modified by anyone (that's what coding standards are for right?). There are some things though that are 'property' of some coworkers like the module that handles the pay or some important functionality of the production module (we are developing an ERP system). What about your work place? Am I the only one living this?

• What kind of screen has the best image quality for reading/programming?

  I'm thinking about buying a new laptop, and while I bought my original one oblivious to the fact that there could be different quality screens out there, after seeing the screen on my sister's netbook I realized that I might have to be cautious with my next purchase. Granted, I did not confirm that the reason my sister's screen looks the way it does is due to the screen itself and not color scheme/graphics card, but I know very little about the different screen technologies and how they differ in image quality and therefore can't really tell if wondering about it even makes sense or not. So what I'm asking is: should I be worried about screen quality? And if so, what technologies should I be looking for? How do they differ and which are the best ones? What are the different elements that determine the quality of a screen and which stats should I go for in each element? For the record, I'm not interested in opinions about screen size, but picture quality for lots of reading/coding.

• Rreport / LaTeX quality output package

  I'm looking for some LaTeX template for creating quality output. On R-bloggers I've bumped on Frank Harrel's Rreport package. Due to my, quite modest LaTeX abilities, only user-friendly (and noob-friendly) interface should suffice. Here's a link to an official website. I'm following the instructions, but I cannot manage to install an app. I use Ubuntu 9.10, R version is 2.10.1 (updated regularly from UCLA's CRAN server)... of course, cvs is installed on my sistem. Now, I'd like to know is there some user-friendly LaTeX template package (Sweave is still to advanced/spartan for me). I'm aware that my question is quite confounding, but brief glance on examples on Rreport page should give you a hint. I'm aware that LaTeX skills are a must, but just for now I need something that will suite my needs (as a psychological researcher). Is there any pandan for Rreport package?

• Is there something like "if not exist create sequence ..." in Oracle SQL?

  Very probably a noob question: For my application that uses an Oracle 8 DB, I am providing an SQL script to setup stuff like triggers, sequences etc., which can be copied and pasted into SQL*Plus. I would like the script to not stop with an error if a sequence that I am trying to create already exists. For a Trigger this can easily be done using "create or replace trigger ...", but for a sequence this does not work. Is there some alternative, like "if not exists mysequence then create sequence ..." (I tried this but it did not work :) ) Alternatively, if this is not possible, is there a way to do a "drop sequence mysequence" without SQL*Plus aborting the script if mysequence does not exist? Thanks. PS: I wish Oracle just had a simple Autoinc field type ... sigh.

  i just got placed after completing my b.tech as an assistant programmer i am curious to know about some things.... i am not at all a very good programmer(in java) as i just started but whenever i see some complicated coding i feel like how man... how they think so much i mean flow and all... what should i do? should i just go with the flow or what?? java is very vast so nobody can memorize everything then how they find so many specific functions to use... should i try to memorize all the syntax stuff or just use google to things and with time it ll be all handy.... what should be my strategy to enhance my skills PS: i love java (crazy about it...) and one more thing, in my company i m not under much pressure so it is good or bad for me???? please guide me. i know you all can help me with your experience :) thank you.
