• An XKB keyboard map that responds to the left and right shift key individually

  First off, excuse my ignorance of X and XKB; I've been trying to hack together a solution in the hope of being able to achieve what I want without requiring a detailed grasp of it. I'm trying to create an XKB keyboard map on Ubuntu 12.04 that allows me to stipulate which of the two shift keys constitutes the Level2 modifier. Specifically, the 4 key should only produce a $ when the right shift is held, not the left. I've attempted to define a custom type, and then refer to it explicitly in a symbols map: /usr/share/X11/xkb/types/mbfisher: default xkb_types "mbfisher" { type "RIGHT_SHIFT" { modifiers = None+Shift_R; map[None] = Level1; map[Shift_R] = Level2; }; } /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/mbfisher: default partial alphanumeric_keys xkb_symbols "basic" { name[Group1]= "mbfisher"; key <AE04> { type= "RIGHT_SHIFT", symbols[Group1]= [ 4, dollar ] }; }; I'm then selecting the map with the Ubuntu Keyboard Layout GUI. This obviously disables the alphanumeric keyboard apart from the 4 key, but the dollar sign can still be typed with either shift key. I'm conscious of writing a massive question with lots of useless information so I'll stop here; please ask for anything I've missed out. Any ideas?

• Reconfiguring, then deleting obsolete pagefile.sys from C: in one go using a batch script

  I'm trying to set up an automated script for a Windows XP installer. It's a batch script that runs on first boot after installation, and among the things I'm trying to accomplish, is removing the pagefile from C: entirely, and putting a 16-768 MB pagefile on D: instead. Here're my batch file instructions: echo === Creating new page file on D: ... cscript %windir%\system32\pagefileconfig.vbs /create /i 16 /m 768 /vo d: >nul echo. echo === Removing old page file from C: ... cscript %windir%\system32\pagefileconfig.vbs /delete /vo C: attrib -s -h c:\pagefile.sys del c:\pagefile.sys My problem is that while these are sane commands, the removal of the pagefile on C: requires me to reboot before those commands succeed.b Or, in other words — I have to first create the D: pagefile, then reboot and delete the c:\pagefile.sys file, or I'm stuck with a c:\pagefile.sys file which isn't even recognized by Windows itself (it'll just say that there's a page file on D:, and that C: has no pagefile at all). Obviously because already some pages are written to the C:\pagefile.sys file. So how would I go about accomplishing this in one go? Or, in two gos, if this is "batch scriptable" :) TIA, Daniel :) EDIT: I should probably clarify: Running those commands above are all valid, but they'll only succeed fully if I re-run the "attrib" and "del" commands at next boot. The C: pagefile is in use at the time, so I cannot delete the file it uses, and Windows itself won't remove it when I configure it to not use C: as a page file drive. Instead, it'll leave an orphaned c:\pagefile.sys file behind (which is really large). I don't necessarily need this to work in one go, registering the last two commands to run after a reboot would also be great :)

  Hey all - I have to design and implement a Fortran routine to determine the size of clusters on a square lattice, and it seemed extremely convenient to code the subroutine recursively. However, whenever my lattice size grows beyond a certain value (around 200/side), the subroutine consistently segfaults. • linq to sql datacontext for a web application

  Hello, I'm trying to use linq to sql for my project (very short deadline), and I'm kind of in a bind. I don't know the best way to have a data context handy per request thread. I want something like a singleton class from which all my repository classes can access the current data context. However, singleton class is static and is not thread-safe and therefore not suitable for web apps. I want something that would create a data context at the beginning of the request and dispose of it along with the request. Can anyone please share their solution to this problem? I've been searching for a solution and I've found a good post from Rick Strahl : http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/246222.aspx but I don't completely understand his thread-safe or business object approach. If somebody has a simplified version of his thread-safe approach, i'd love to take a look.

• Basic doubt about sensor usage

  Suppose I have a cellphone with accelerometer and magnetometer, and want to determine its absolute (wrt North/East/South/West) 3d position. Imagine the phone is laid vertically, with the screen facing me, the "up" vector pointing to the ceil. Whenever I tilt, the accelerometer allows me to get the "up" vector info change. The problem is that if I tilt the device and put it horizontally (screen now facing ceil, and "up" vector pointing to the opposite of where I am), then the up vector doesn't get updated any more if I rotate the phone horizontally on the table. This is something that clearly is detected by the magnetometer now. So, the question is, when to know where to use acc or mag for each case? Is there a generic way to achieve this?

  Hi, I'm currently using this code to calculate the sunrise / sunset times. (To be more precise, I'm looking for civil dawn / civil dusk times which are defined as the time when the sun is between 0° and -6° altitude). As a next step, I'd like to compute the dawn beginning and dusk ending times. I believe the calculations must be very similar. My idea is that if I want to calculate the dawn beginning (dusk ending) time for a place I just calculate the sunrise (sunset) times for a place 6° farther east (west).   I have a Rails app on Heroku that is serving 500 errors at random intervals. Web pages will display "Internal server error" in plain text, instead of the usual "We're sorry. Something went wrong." page. When I refresh the page, it works fine. • How to order a TimeZone list in .NET?

  I have an ASP.NET web application that requires users to select their appropriate time zone so that it can correctly show local times for events. In creating a simple approach for selecting the time zone, I started by just using the values from TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones(), and showing that list. The only problem with this is that since our application is primarily targeted at the United States, I'd like to show those entries first, basically starting with Eastern Time and working backwards (West) until I reach Atlantic time. What's a good approach to do this in code?

• linux container bridge filters ARP reply

  I am using kernel 3.0, and I have configured a linux container that is bridged to a tap interface in my host computer. This is the bridge configuration: :~$ brctl show bridge-1 bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces bridge-1 8000.9249c78a510b no ns3-mesh-tap-1 vethjUErij My problem is that this bridge is dropping ARP replies that come from the ns3-mesh-tap-1 interface. Instead, if I statically populate the ARP tables and ping directly everything works, so it has to be something related to ARP. I have read about similar problems in related posts, and I have tried with the solutions explained therein but nothing seems to work. Specifically: ~$ grep net.bridge /etc/sysctl.conf net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-filter-vlan-tagged = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-filter-pppoe-tagged = 0 arptables and ebtables are not installed. iptables FORWARD is all set to accept: Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination The bridged interfaces are set to PROMISC: ~$ ifconfig ns3-mesh-tap-1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 1a:c7:24:ef:36:1a ... • AWS Load Balancer with a static IP address

  I have a set-up running on Amazon cloud with a couple of EC2 Instances running through a load balancer. It is important that the site has a unique(static) IP or set of IPs as I'm plugging in 3rd party APIs which only accept requests made from IPs which have been added to their whitelist. So basically unless we can give these 3rd parties a static IP or range of IPs that the requests from the site will always come from then we would be unable to make any calls to them. Anyone knows how to achieve this as I know that Elastic IPs are not compatible with load balancers? If I were to look up the IP of the load balancer DNS name (e.g. dualstack.awseb-BAMobile-ENV-xxxxxxxxx.eu-west-1.elb.amazonaws.com resolves to 200.200.200.200) would that IP be Static? Any help/advise is greatly appreciated guys.

  This is probably a stupid question, but I can't seem to do it. I want to set up some enums in one class like this: public enum Direction { north, east, south, west }; Then have that enum type accessible to all classes so that some other class could for instance have: Direction dir = north; and be able to pass the enum type between classes: public void changeDirection(Direction direction) { dir = direction; } I thought that setting the enum to public would make this automatically possible, but it doesn't seem to be visible outside of the class I declared the enum in.

  Hi, If I defined a ENUM in a base object with serveral default values. When I inherit from the base object I want to add more options the the ENUM list which are specific to the inheriting object. For example my base could have a ENUM called Direction with values: None ALL Stop Start I create a new class call Compass which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction. North South East West I create a new class call Navigation which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction. Left Right So, In my inheriting class haow do I extend the ENUM. I am using VB.NET. Regards
