• Laptop LCD sometimes stops working on reboot. Please help.

  I have a Gateway P-6831FX Laptop with Vista Ultimate. The Laptop LCD will sometimes not come on after I reboot the computer. I don't even close the lid and it happens. It isn't dim, it doesn't come on at all. No posting of CMOS (BIOS), nothing. Please note... this happens sometimes, not every time. Frustrating! When plugged into an external monitor, which works fine, Vista display properties can't even "sense" the laptop LCD. I try to enable the laptop LCD for dual display, turning on the laptop LCD, and it does nothing. It's like the laptop LCD is not even there. Manually taking a magnet in my hand to the laptop lid sensing switch (the sensor that turns off display/sleep mode when you close lid), sometimes causes the LCD backlight to "turn on" but not display any images. By "turn on" I mean I can see the screen backlight turn on to a 'dark gray' screen instead of pitch black. Subsequent reboot the laptop display is not working again! Here are the facts: Only happens at random and only after a reboot. Waking from Sleep mode isn't a problem. Pressing F4 function key for dual display does nothing when this happens. Closing lid doesn't seem to be related. (unless it is only after reboot.) using external magnet from laptop screen sensor sometimes triggers backlight to turn on but reboot back to square one with no LCD display. an external display always works fine. I have taken apart LCD, checked all wires and ribbons for loose connections or damage. I have replaced the Inverter. It doesn't seem to be heat related as I can put in sleep mode and resume fine when very hot. (external monitor works fine too). Sometimes the screen works fine as if there is not a problem at all. Even after a reboot... This is random. Any ideas out there? If it is a bad part... which one? The LCD seems to be fine. What are the odds of 2 bad inverters? The backlight is fine. The LCD wires/ribbons seem to be fine. I am at a loss. No warranty left and Gateway tech support is clueless. Thanks for any feedback that might help.

• How to handle external and internal DNS on windows 2012

  I'm trying to setup an Active Directory network on Server 2012 R2, and want AD's DNS to only be used internally (Ex: domain-controller.company.com) as well as some records that need both internal and external accessibility (Ex: mail.company.com) that use internal IP's on the internal network and finally some records that only need external access. The only solutions i have been able to think of, or look up are to either use a sub domain that handles all internal records, and use the plain company.com domain for all external records. These both seem to mean i have to manage two DNS servers separately. Is either of these the best ways or am i messing up somewhere?

  Upgraded hard drive in Lenovo T61P; decided to start fresh with Windows 7 Pro. Windows installed, so DVD drive was working. All of a sudden, driver is not recognized. Device is "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N ATA Device". It appears on device manager but with the yellow tag; have tried uninstalling, searching for drivers, everything I can think of. • Windows Vista wont recognize SSD drive

  I just bought an SSD drive for my Vista (32bit) box (120GB OCZ Agility 3). Unfortunately windows vista won't display it in the my computer window, and generally wont let me work on it. However, the bios recognizes the SSD drive correctly, and when I go on the windows device manager the drive is there as well. I can see the device properties. On the volumes, when I click on populate, I have: Disk: Disk1 Type: Uknown Status: not initialized Partition style: not avaiable Unallocated space: 0MB Reserved space: 0MB Any ideas what could be wrong? • How to separate Hyper-V Private network from the External network

  I am setting up a virtual test lab and I configured a domain controller VM running Windows 2008 R2 on my Hyper-V 2008 R2 server. I needed to download and install updates on it so I added an External NIC adapter and got that done. However, systems on my actual real physical domain were pulling IPs from this server and that was a big oopsy on my part so I immediately removed the External NIC adapter until I could find out how to go about keeping the Private and the External separate. If someone from the Server Fault community can help with this since I am pretty new to this, I would be very grateful. Thanks everyone.

• Cloning single disk drive to multiple drives simultaneously

  Hi, I am looking for a way to clone single disk drive to more than one disk drive at the same time. I have prepared system images on 1TB disks, and it takes almost 2 hours to clone one disk to another, and then it goes up exponentially, in order to have say 30 disks cloned. If it was possible to clone one disk to more than single target, it would simplify whole procedure a lot. Also, is there something that prevents this kind of operation? I mean, is there some special reason why every disk cloning software that I know about supports only single target drive? Thanks! P.S. • OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard no longer mounting an external USB drive

  I have a 1TB generic external hard drive containing a single HFS partition. I originally formatted this using Disk Utility and it worked fine. Now, for some reason, it's not auto-mounting when I start up. Using mount at the command line gives the following error: $ sudo mount /dev/disk1s2 /Volumes/Test /dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/Test: Incorrect super block. ... but if I use the mount_hfs command it works fine, mounts, and is readable. $ mount_hfs /dev/disk1s2 /Volumes/Test/ fsck gives me an error about a bad super block: $ fsck /dev/disk1 ** /dev/rdisk1 (NO WRITE) BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG ... but fsck_hfs -fn /dev/disk1s2 doesn't find any problems and reports that the volume appears to be OK. In Disk Utility, the drive appears to have a single MS-DOS partition with a curious notice about how it appears to be partitioned for Boot Camp: I have the Boot Camp HFS driver installed in WIndows 7, and that OS sees the drive/partition normally. What's wrong with my disk?

• Utility to unmap a network drive when the screen saver starts

  I'm looking for a way to unmap network drives when the screen saver turns on. I have a few users that share an external, encrypted drive (Samba share, not windows) and they have a requirement to disconnect the drive mapping when the local machine is idle. I'd also like it to warn them if there are open files on the mapped drive, if possible. There is also a requirement to force the password to be reentered before mapping when the machine comes back from idle. Is there a Windows setting or utility out there in the wild that meets these requirements?

  How does the Ubuntu trash work? It appears that one trash bin is used by many drives. I've noticed a folder called ".Trash-1000" on my network drive as well as "/home/user/.local/share/Trash". Currently I have a problem where a number of files I deleted from a network drive (which I no longer have full access to) appear in my trash but but cannot be deleted, I see the error "Failed to delete the item from the trash". If I look at the files in this network drive trash I notice that it contains all of these undeletable files. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 x64.

  I'm looking for either freeware or the programming basics to power off/on a hard drive. Mounting and unmounting a hard drive is simple enough just using the command prompt in Windows XP. Now I need to be able to power down the hard drive so it will not become damaged when being unplugged. I would prefer this to be a simple doable in the command prompt, a simple script, or at worst C++/C#. Freeware that does this exact requirement would also do the job. This script/program will run on Windows XP with .NET 2.0 SP1.

  If I've got a typical home router -- say a Net Gear -- which has certain ports forwarded to a internal server, is there a way to tweak the router to let me access that internal server using the external IP address from within the same network? Is there a non-enterprise grade router that can handle this type of thing? In case that was strangely worded, let me re-phrase with an example. My external IP is 1.2.3.4. My internal server is 10.4.3.100 Port 1178 is being forwarded from the router to 10.4.3.100. I'd like to be able to be able to hit 10.4.3.100 from an internal ip of 10.4.3.10 by using the external ip of 1.2.3.4. Possible?

  DOSBox makes a virtual drive, which it names Z:, for storing utility stuff on. Clearly they're trying to stay out of your way, so you can do whatever you want with the C: drive. Swell, I understand that. But I've got some old database accessing software I really, really want to run which assumes it lives on the Z drive. So I need to get DOSBox's Z called anything else.   In postfix, I'm using relay_host to send an email to an external address using sendgrid, but I get an error about local ricipient table when sending an email from my PHP code. This is my main.cf in /postfix/ ## -- Sendgrid smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = static:username:password smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtp_tls_security_level = may header_size_limit = 4096000 relayhost = [smtp.sendgrid.net]:587 This is the error message from the log: postfix/smtpd[53598]: [ID 197553 mail.info] NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from localhost[127.0.0.1]: 550 5.1.1 Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<localhost.localdomain> One interesting thing is when I use "sendmail [email protected]" from the command line, the email is delivered successfully using SendGrid. I think it's because this uses postfix/smtp instead of postfix/smtpD the log for this says, postfix/smtp[18670]: [ID 197553 mail.info] AAF7313A7E: to=, relay=smtp.sendgrid.net[50.97.69.148]:587, delay=4.1, delays=3.5/0.02/0.44/0.18, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Delivery in progress) Thank you

• Mount drive when symbolic link is accessed

  I have a MacBook Pro with two internal drives: an SSD and a slow rotational drive. On the rotational drive I keep heavy, rarely accessed files like movies, photos, etc. These are symlinked from the SSD, so applications like iPhoto and iTunes will still find everything where they expect. I don't usually have the rotational drive mounted because it's loud and mostly unused. Is there a way to mount it when the system tries to access data behind a symlink, then unmount it automatically later? (Intermediate *nix user, here, feel free to tell me I am asking for magic.) • DKIM for email through Google Apps domain with external outbound relay

  I'd like to enable the new Domain Keys DKIM email authentication feature for a domain hosted in Google Apps. Some of my users use an external SMTP gateway (such that when they send email, it doesn't go through smtp.gmail.com). I have an SPF record configured for the domain, and this allows the external SMTP gateways as valid SMTP hosts. (I realise SPF is different to DKIM) Will enabling DKIM adversely affect the external gateway email? eg. Are the externally sent emails at risk of being marked as spam because they would not have the DKIM signature, or will DKIM only positively benefit emails sent through Google's SMTP server?

• Hybrid drive not booting faster than a normal HD

  I have used Windows 7 to create an image of my existing standard 160GB HD and copied this image back to a bigger 500GB Seagate hybrid drive. After copying the image to the hybrid I had to resize the partition, which was fine but after rebooting a few times to "teach" the hybrid, I have no increase in boot speed. It still takes 20-25 seconds to close down and then over a minute to start up. Is this something to do with the way the image lays itself on the drive indiscriminately? Do I need to load the OS on the drive from scratch to get the benefits? My PC with an i5 processor, is using AHCI mode.

• Can't find second partition on encrypted drive with two partitions

  I have a drive with two partitions, a system partition (Windows 7) and a partition just for data. Both are encrypted with the same password. I didn't had any problems, but yesterday my laptop gets broken. Now, I'm trying to connect the drive via USB to a new laptop and read it. The problem is, that I only see the system partition, not the one with my data. When I click on "Select Device", I can see my drive as "Harddisk 1" with 300 gb. But I only see a single partition "Partition1" with 117 gb. I'm unable to find the second one. It's not a hidden partition. Any ideas? Thanks.

• RHEL kickstart with external DVDrom drive

  HI I've an old Dell poweredge server with an CDROM drive. I've attached a USB DVDROM and USB stick with my ks.cfg on so I can install RHEL from DVD not loads of CDs :-) I can boot from the RHEL media in DVDROM and point the installer to the USB ks.cfg. This works but the ks.cfg script has the cdrom keyword in it. The install then stops and asks for the RHEL media to be in the CDROM drive not the DVDROM. How can I change the ks.cfg so it uses the external DVDROM for the install media not servers builtin cdrom drive ? I know I can go and rebuild my DVD image to include the ks.cfg , but this is an extra step I dont want to do if I have to. Regards Andy

• Create a share on iscsi drive in Windows Server 2012

  I am brand new to server administration but I don't belive im trying to do anything to exotic I have a windows server 2012 (standard) and a drobo 800i My goal is to setup company shares on the iscsi target I have setup on the drobo So far I have: initialized the iscsi and connected made the iscsi disk read/write(it default started as read only) formatted and mounted it (as drive E:) from the server local desktop I can see and write files to the E:\ drive in shares wizard I do not see it as a volume option when I view the volumes window I see (e: drobo Fixed 16tb 16tb) I'm new to everything but I would think since its a mounted drive I should be able to share a folder on it but it appears its not that straight forward suggestions?
