• How to diagnose very slow pagefile

  Quite often, one of the applications I use freezes (“does not respond”) for a while, in extreme cases for few minutes. This happens especially when when switching apps. During this time, the HDD light flashes constantly and perfmon show that HDD is used 100% of the time (OTOH, CPU isn't) and that pagefile is being read (which is to be expected when switching apps), but at a very slow rate. When I sort the disk table in perfmon by read or write, the file read and wrote the most is the pagefile, but it's still quite low rate (I don't remember the numbers). How can I diagnose what's causing this? I use Windows Vista, and the computer is quite ordinary two years old laptop.

• Recover data from an ''unpartitioned'' hard drive

  I'm trying to recover data from a hdd for a friend from work. He was using it on an old win98 PC (so I guess it was a FAT 16 filesystem). When he installed the drive on a new PC his Windows XP can't recognize the filesystem and give an error message saying that the drive is unformatted. I tried to mount the hdd under linux but no partitions appear to be associated with the drive (I have only /dev/sdb associated with that drive and no /dev/sdb1 or sdb2 etc). I've found many articles on the web on how to recover partitions (with scripts like dd and ddrescue) but how do I make it when I have no partitions and the system say my drive is unpartioned? Is it possible to create a new partition without loosing the data?

• Why Buy Hardrives with storage server from a vendor?

  Hi all, Im just browsing around at storage server's like the Dell MD100/ MD3000 and the Sun J4200 and although the storage server seems reasonable (approx $3000-$4000 AUD) the hard-drives that you buy to go along with them seems exorbitantly expensive. And I'm not sure why. Surely at most they are using good quality RAID level 7200rpm SATA hdd, but even then they are still charging almost 4 times the price. What is the advantage to buying these from them. I can see if one fails then the vendor replacing it is convenient. But at that price you could buy double the amount of hdd and just claim on warranty directly with the manufacturer. It would be much cheaper and you wouldn't be relying on someone else to fix your problems. Is this the case of "you don't get fired if you buy IBM?" mentality or is there some reason I'm not grasping here? Cheers Mark

• Trying to install Windows 7 on Samsung 530u3c. Laptop won't boot

  I just bought a Samsung 530u3c with Windows 8 installed,so it's a week old. From day one, I have wanted to revert back to Windows 7. So I have created a USB bootable drive with Windows 7 on, and tried installing it both on the SSD 24GB drive and the 465GB SATA HDD. The laptop will not boot from either drive. After trying to boot once, the laptop reboots and then presents me with a boot menu that only shows the SATA HDD. Selecting it does nothing. So I'm losing my mind here. I have absolutely no clue on how to solve this. I'm starting to think i just threw away 700 Euros... :( Any thoughts on what my next steps should be in troubleshooting the issue? Installation goes through without problems. All files are copied. By the time the laptop needs to restart, it goes into a boot loop.

• Programs minimized for long time takes long time to "wake up"

  I'm working in Photoshop CS6 and multiple browsers a lot. I'm not using them all at once, so sometimes some applications are minimized to taskbar for hours or days. The problem is, when I try to maximize them from the taskbar - it sometimes takes longer than starting them! Especially Photoshop feels really weird for many seconds after finally showing up, it's slow, unresponsive and even sometimes totally freezes for minute or two. It's not a hardware problem as it's been like that since always on all on my PCs. Would I also notice it after upgrading my HDD to SDD and adding RAM (my main PC holds 4 GB currently)? Could guys with powerful pcs / macs tell me - does it also happen to you? I guess OSes somehow "focus" on active software and move all the resources away from the ones that run, but are not used. Is it possible to somehow set RAM / CPU / HDD priorities or something, for let's say, Photoshop, so it won't slow down after long period of inactivity?

• Re-Initialize RAID-0 in software after card failure

  I'm working on a Friend's WD MyBook "1TB" HDD that is not mounting. When I got in to it, I discovered that it is really 2 500GB HDD's set up as RAID-0. It appears that the drives themselves are fine, but that the logic board has failed. My questions is this: can I re-initialize the RAID-0 using software RAID so that I can recover the data to another drive? If so, how and which software RAID would be best (Preferably open source. any platform OK).

  I have SSD and HDD. Some directories like /var, /srv and /tmp should be on HDD, while /boot, /usr and /lib on SSD. But do I have to create separate partition for every single directory? I want to have 2 or so partitions. One for each disk and distribute directories as needed. Is it possible and how? I've heard about symlinks, mount --bind, mhddfs but: symlinks are treated differently by tools like cp, so I'm not sure if it's safe to have main system directories symlinked I have no idea how can I use mount --bind or mhddfs in fstab

  I am researching external HDD's capable or RAID 1 to store a large amount of video content during overseas filming. After filming, the content will be brought back to the office and offloaded onto our storage server. After doing some research, I've found that I can buy an external drive with a built in RAID controller, or I can buy an external drive, with 2 HDD's, that I can configure in a RAID 1 array using the OS. RAID 1 is what we're looking for. I've done some reading on software RAID vs. hardware RAID, but the resources I've found don't discuss performance as it relates to video content or what happens to a software RAID when the computer dies. Question 1: Will the hardware RAID be more performant when dealing with large video files? Question 2: If the mac dies, does my RAID die with it (will my data be accessible on another mac)?

  When I install Windows 7, everything goes smooth but as soon as it's done and Windows needs to reboot for the last time before getting the desktop, the computer stucks to Verify DMI Pool Data............. and then, nothing. I change the CMOS battery, I tried so many setup in BIOS, even load default settings... Nothing worked. The HDD light is not flickering anymore, no HDD activity. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. It's just impossible to load Windows 7. I tried Windows XP and this works fine. I also tried the Acer (Futureshop) recovery CD and I get an Hexademical error message stating the install cannot continue. Is there a BIOS flash apps somewhere or a fix I can apply to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer. Any takers?

  I have a BSOD on windows 7 with SSD during boot after improper shutdown (while windows animation logo is moving). The computer restart imediatly after BSOD, and windows proposes to launch startup repair (if i do it, it takes +-5min and fixes the problem : computer starts normally). However, after any new improper shutdown, i got the same problem. Remarks: If i unplug, re-plug the SSD whyle system is shutdown, i have the same problem.   Hello All, I have one server 2008 installed with AD, SQL and IIS. Now I am trying to attach different HDD on this server only. I am able to install windows server 2008 r2 64bit on the server, but when I try to install the ActiveDirectory on the server the setup doesn't get completed and keep processing at following level. "Configuring Active directory and local host domains ......." If I attach same HDD on any other PC Active directory setups completes successfully. My server is Xeon quad core with 8GB of RAM. • Suggestion for boot manager in external hard disk

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system. • Weblogic 10.3 weblogic.jar classpath issues

  I am upgrading an old WLS8.1 app to 10.3 (11g) My ant build includes only the new weblogic.jar in the compile classpath and the build runs with no issues but when I include weblogic.jar as a libeary in the IDE (Intellij) i see many unresolved imports (for example: weblogic.xml.xpath.DOMXPath) when I check the weblogic.jar I see that the classes are indeed missing from it. compiling with verbose revealed that by including weblogic.jar in the ant classpath, many other jars in the BEA_HOME/modules are loaded to the classpath as well (for example: com.bea.core.xml.weblogic.xpath_1.4.0.0.jar) Can anyone explain what is going on? How can I fix my IDE classpath - do I need to import all the module-jars? Many of the module jars seems like they are there to support old deprecated weblogic 8 APIs (like: weblogic.xml.xpath.DOMXPath) how can I exclude these modules from my ant build? (I want to expose the APIs I need to upgrade) Thanks, NY

• Dell poweredge 1850's - wont install os

  I have 3 of these dell 1850 rack servers. 1 has 3GB RAM and 2 73GB HDD's. 2 have 6GB RAM and each of them has 2 73GB HDD's. I am currently trying to install an os on them but when i boot with windows xp setup, it gives me an error saying no partition found. Now i have set these drives up in RAID on the server and i put them "online" so it should be working fine but they're not.   well i hope this stackexchange site is the right for my issue. I've an Oracle VirtualBox running on some acer pc Settings for the Acer PC: Windows 7 SP1 64bit Intel G630 @ 2.7Ghz 2GB RAM i used a .vhd image which contains a windows 2000 system with some preconfigured stuff and software for a customer. At the Windows boot time immediately after the "Loading Windows 2000..." - Screen i get the following Error: Sorry for the German Text but it say's something like "Check the Size of your HDD. If the error contains a driver, deactivate it and try again. Or change the graficcard" The HDD Size shouldn't be a problem in my honest opinion. Can anyone give me an adivce what i can try to do? I just tested the same combination of the .vhd image and oracle virtualbox on another computer. Same issue. Greetings

• Upgrading Fedora 16 to 17 with crypted LVM

  As the title suggests, I want to upgrade Fedora 16 to the Fedora 17 Alpha build, but I am struggling to do so because of my crypted HDD. To avoid the hustle of CD-ROM or USB install, I thought the preupgrade would be a good idea. It downloads the stuff, stores an image somewhere and creates an entry in my boot manager. When I choose to upgrade from the boot manager it crashes halfway through because it can not access any of the prepared files (because it's crypted) and hands me a debug console. Unfortunately, this case apparently is not covered by the Fedora troubleshooting advice, at least I was not able to find anything there. I would guess I have to mount my HDD manually, but 1) how? and 2) how do I resume the upgrade afterwards? I would really appreciate a push in the right direction.

  a friend of mine asked me to re-install his Asus F5Z notebook with Windows XP. I installed succcessfully all drivers from assus driver download site. Everything is working fine but ethernet driver. The installation of Lan Driver for WIN XP finishes with strange message "Please shutdown & plug Realtech PCI-e card to complete the installation. Not sure if it matters but OnChip SATA is in 'Native IDE' mode . The original one with Vista was 'IDE - AHCI mode'. Any idea how I can make the LAN adapter to work under Windows XP?

• SQL Management Studio is painfully slow on 32-bit Windows 7

  I've been having issues running anything in SQL Management Studio on Win 7. Basically, doing anything through the Management Studio interfaces completely freezes it up for a few minutes. Running a query is nearly impossible because it takes nearly 2 minutes just for the IDE to parse it and another minute to run it when the query itself completes instantaneously outside of the IDE. I'm not even going to go into the query designer. Anything with heavy user interaction such as editing a row in the result set where i have to click a cell freezes up the front-end. I tried reinstalling to no avail. Also tried running in compatibility mode without any difference whatsoever. Anybody had a similar experience? I'm running SQL Management Studio 2008 version 10.0.2531.0 on 32-bit Windows 7. Connecting to a remote SQL Server instance (2008 R2). Thanks.
