• How can I select which Java to use?

  I have installed both OpenJDK 6 and 7. When I run "java somefile" from the command line, OpenJDK 6 is invoked. I do not want to change this default behavior. What command can I use to run my non-default OpenJDK 7 installation instead? (I am used to running "python somefile" to invoke the default Python, "python2.7 somefile" to use Python 2.7 specifically and "python3 somefile" to use Python 3 specifically.)

• How do I get the username in Java (ie, who -m in Java) (or Jython 2.1)

  Here's the situation. I have a jython 2.1 script in a shared account that needs to know who is calling it. In bash, I can simply use 'who -m' and it will give me the correct username. I haven't been able to find anything in java (or jython) that would give me a similar result. Even trying to call Runtime.getRuntime().exec("who -m") doesn't do anything. When I try to read the InputStream from the process returned by exec, the stream is empty.

• ToolTip flicker in Java if outside JFrame? [closed]

  Hi! I am implementing ToolTip in Java as to make users having an easier time to use the product. Though tooltip that are at the borders of the JFrame and ends up outside the JFrame starts to "flicker". I've tried lots of things (like moving the tooltip so it should be inside the Jframe, controlling the painting so it ends up within the JFrame and so on) though it doesn't work. Anyone got any expertise within the field that know how to avoid this problem? Cheers, Skarion

• Object Oriented Design of a Small Java Game

  This is the problem i am dealing with. I have to make a simple game of NIM. I am learning java using a book so far i have only coded programs that deal with 2 classes. This program would have about 4 classes i guess including the main class. My problem is i am having a difficult time designing classes how they will interact with each other. I really want to think and use a object oriented approach. So the first thing i did was design the Pile CLASS as it seemed the easiest and made the most sense to me in terms of what methods go in it. Here is what i have got down for the Pile Class so far. package Nim; import java.util.Random; public class Pile { private int initialSize; public Pile(){ } Random rand = new Random(); public void setPile(){ initialSize = (rand.nextInt(100-10)+10); } public void reducePile(int x){ initialSize = initialSize - x; } public int getPile(){ return initialSize; } public boolean hasStick(){ if(initialSize>0){ return true; } else { return false; } } } Now i need help in designing the Player Class. By that i mean i am not asking for anyone to write code for me as that defeats the purpose of learning i was just wondering how would i design the player class and what would go on it. My guess is that the player class would contain method for choosing move for computer and also receiving the move human user makes. Lastly i am guessing in the Game class i am guessing the turns would be handeled. I am really lost right now so i was wondering if someone can help me think through this problem it would be great. Starting with the player class would be appreciated. I know there are some solutions for this problem online but i refuse to look at because i want to develop my own approach to such problems and i am confident if i can get through this problem i can solve other problems. I apologize if this question is a bit poor but in specific i need help in designing the Player class.

• Java SOAP WSDL 1.1 message sending all the parameters (even future ones)

  I have to communicate with a SOAP Web Service defined in a WSDL 1.1. All the parameters are optional in the WSDL like: <xsd:element name="Submitter" type="xsd:string"/> but if I do not send them I get an error because the parameter was not sent, so instead I have to send an empty string for any parameter I do not intent to send. So instead of not sending the element I have to send: <Submitter></Submitter> The problem is that the WebService publisher does not have any problem adding new parameters at any point in time but I must sent at least an empty string for all the parameters. How may I call this WebService in Java so every time I call the WebService the WSDL is read so that all the parameters are sent having the parameters I care for are actually filled with the data I provide? I am currently using Apache CXF but I am open to anything to solve this problem.

  Can a Java application be loaded in a separate process using its name, as opposed to its location, in a platform independent manner? I know you can execute a program via ... Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec( COMMAND ); ... the main issue of this method is that such calls are then platform specific. Ideally, I'd wrap a method into something as simple as... EXECUTE.application( CLASS_TO_BE_EXECUTED ); ... and pass in the fully qualified name of an application class as CLASS_TO_BE_EXECUTED.

• Need suggestions on which web frameworks to use?

  I want to build a site where people can create their personal websites quickly. All their websites will be hosted on my single web application (i.e. there will be only one database which contains info of all the websites). Each person will have an account where he can customize his website (template, content etc.). They can access their website from .mysite.com or mysite.com/xyz. I should be able to add different modules frequently, which will immediately reflect in all the websites created through my site. Based on the above requirements, please suggest me if there are any frameworks to use which can ease my job. Also suggest me which language to use (php or java). Which one would be better.

• Reasons NOT to use JSF [closed]

  I am new to StackExchange, but I figured you would be able to help me. We're crating a new Java Enterprise application, replacing an legacy JSP solution. Due to many many changes, the UI and parts of the business logic will completely be rethought and reimplemented. Our first thought was JSF, as it is the standard in Java EE. At first I had a good impression. But now I am trying to implement a functional prototype, and have some really serious concerns about using it. First of all, it creates the worst, most cluttered invalid pseudo-HTML/CSS/JS mix I've ever seen. It violates every single rule I learned in web-development. Furthermore it throws together, what never should be so tightly coupled: Layout, Design, Logic and Communication with the server. I don't see how I would be able to extend this output comfortably, whether styling with CSS, adding UI candy (like configurable hot-keys, drag-and-drop widgets) or whatever. Secondly, it is way too complicated. Its complexity is outstanding. If you ask me, it's a poor abstraction of basic web technologies, crippled and useless in the end. What benefits do I have? None, if you think about. Hundreds of components? I see ten-thousands of HTML/CSS snippets, ten-thousands of JavaScript snippets and thousands of jQuery plug-ins in addition. It solves really many problems - we wouldn't have if we wouldn't use JSF. Or the front-controller pattern at all. And Lastly, I think we will have to start over in, say 2 years. I don't see how I can implement all of our first GUI mock-up (Besides; we have no JSF Expert in our team). Maybe we could hack it together somehow. And then there will be more. I'm sure we could hack our hack. But at some point, we'll be stuck. Due to everything above the service tier is in control of JSF. And we will have to start over. My suggestion would be to implement a REST api, using JAX-RS. Then create a HTML5/Javascript client with client side MVC. (or some flavor of MVC..) By the way; we will need the REST api anyway, as we are developing a partial Android front-end, too. I doubt, that JSF is the best solution nowadays. As the Internet is evolving, I really don't see why we should use this 'rake'. Now, what are pros/cons? How can I emphasize my point to not use JSF? What are strong points to use JSF over my suggestion?

  I have a java.util.ArrayList<Item> and an Item object. Now, I want to obtain the number of times the Item is stored in the arraylist. I know that I can do arrayList.contains() check but it returns true, irrespective of whether it contains one or more Items. Q1. How can I find the number of time the Item is stored in the list? ================================================================================== Q2. Also, If the list contains more than one Item, then how can I determine the index of other Items because arrayList.indexOf(item) returns the index of only first Item every time?

• Static objects and concurrency in a web application

  I'm developing small Java Web Applications on Tomcat server and I'm using MySQL as my database. Up until now I was using a connection singleton for accessing the database but I found out that this will ensure just on connection per Application and there will be problems if multiple users want to access the database in the same time. (They all have to make us of that single Connection object). I created a Connection Pool and I hope that this is the correct way of doing things. Furthermore it seems that I developed the bad habit of creating a lot of static object and static methods (mainly because I was under the wrong impression that every static object will be duplicated for every client which accesses my application). Because of this all the Service Classes ( classes used to handle database data) are static and distributed through a ServiceFactory: public class ServiceFactory { private static final String JDBC = "JDBC"; private static String impl; private static AccountService accountService; private static BoardService boardService; public static AccountService getAccountService(){ initConfig(); if (accountService == null){ if (impl.equalsIgnoreCase(JDBC)){ accountService = new JDBCAccountService(); } } return accountService; } public static BoardService getBoardService(){ initConfig(); if (boardService == null){ if (impl.equalsIgnoreCase(JDBC)){ boardService = new JDBCBoardService(); } } return boardService; } private static void initConfig(){ if (StringUtil.isEmpty(impl)){ impl = ConfigUtil.getProperty("service.implementation"); // If the config failed initialize with standard if (StringUtil.isEmpty(impl)){ impl = JDBC; } } } This was the factory class which, as you can see, allows just one Service to exist at any time. Now, is this a bad practice? What happens if let's say 1k users access AccountService simultaneously? I know that all this questions and bad practices come from a bad understanding of the static attribute in a web application and the way the server handles this attributes.   I am a Java Web Application Developer. I have an idea for a web application project that I am working on. I personally believe that the app has potential to become a popular website. Currently I am working on it as a developer with two others in the project. The development costs has been almost null uptil now since we are doing in-house development with open source technologies. But the costs are now going to appear as we'll have to host our application online on the servers. Right now I see this as the major expense as we go live. Are there any ways by which we can smartly deal with this hurdle ? We want to minimize the costs as much as possible, or even better, if we can make this null, perhaps, through some partnership agreement with the hosting solutions provider!? • Middle tier language for interfacing C/C++ with db and web app

  I have a web application requiring a middle-tier language to communicate between an oracle database and math routines on a Linux server and a flex-based application on a client. I'm not a software expert, and need recommendations for which language to use for the middle-tier. The math routines are currently in Matlab but will be ported to C (or C++) as shared libraries. Thus, by default there's some C or C++ communication necessary. These routines rely on FFTW (www.fftw.org), which is called directly from C or C++ (thus, I don't see re-writing these routines in another language). The middle tier must manage traffic between the client, the math routines, and the Oracle database. The client will trigger the math routines aynchronously, and the results saved in the db and transferred back to the client, etc. The middle-tier will also need to authenticate user accounts/passwords, and send out various administrative emails. Originally I thought PhP the obvious choice, but interfacing asychronously multiple clients with the C or C++ routines doesn't seem straightforward. Then I thought, why not just keep the whole middle tier in C or C++, but I'm not sure if this is done in the industry (C or C++ doesn't seem as web-friendly as other languages). There's always Jave + JNI, but maybe that introduces other complications (not sure). Any feedback appreciated.

  I want to change OpenJDK to SunJava in my ubuntu linux desktop , i have downloaded the "jdk-7.tar.gz" from sun's website, but there problem is how to make the system to use the newly downloaded java ? I tried adding the new jdk/bin/java to my PATH ( from .bashrc ) but that seem not to work (cause probably OpenJDK's path is inside my PATH variable as well , so the system checks that first) Here's my JDK7 : /usr/lib/jdk7/bin/java Here's what $(which java) outputs : /usr/bin/java Thanks in advance

• Java kills sound on Karmic

  Every time I run a java application, one of two things happen: Either I lose sound in all other programs (even after quitting the java app) or if some other application is already playing sound, the said java app doesn't have sound Usually this can be fixed by running pulseaudio --kill from the command line, but it doesn't always work. Is there a way to fix this problem? This didn't happen before the upgrade to karmic. Other info: The java I'm using is Sun's Java

• Axis web service can't be invoked from web application

  Hi all, I have a simple axis 1.4 web service which I deployed successfully and can invoke it from main method of a Java class. This works fine but when I try to invoke it from a web application it throws an exception saying 'Class not found' for the class 'ws/impl/AwardWebServiceSoapBindingStub'.
