• How to diagnose website performance/app pool recycling with Windows 2008/IIS7

  Ok, so there are various symptoms here (clients and and our own employees complaining of intermittent slowdowns, getting 'kicked out' to login page or just having a save request not properly save the submitted data). The environment: Windows Server 2008 (Datacenter), Service Pack 2, 64-bit, 2x2.8 GHz processors, 7.5 GB RAM MS SQL Server 2008 (running on the same machine) IIS 7 There are ~10 websites running on the server, each in their own application pool - most of these pools are running in Integrated mode, 2 are in Classic, all are on .NET 2.0 and all run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I'm trying to analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot and am struggling with where to get more info about what could be happening. Here are some steps i have already taken: Set each application pool to recycle once per day, and removed any other automatic recycling Set a Virtual Memory Limit for each to 1024000KB (1GB) Enabled ALL 'Generate Recycle Event Log Entry' entries (Config Changes, Isapi Reported Unhealthy, Manual Recycle, Private Memory Limit Exceeded, Regular Time Interval, Request Limit Exceeded, Specific Time, Virtual Memory Limit Exceeded) I have seen the app pool processes recycle (in Task Manager) - a new one will start up, and then the first one dies off - and this has happened without the memory or time going over the settings. This is a fairly new server, and most of these came from Windows Server 2003/IIS6. Any 'next steps' for setting up information gathering, logging, diagnosing, etc. would be much appreciated! j

• Windows Media Center showing Jerky Video on PC

  I had to repave my Windows 7 x64 box last week due to a hard drive crash, and for a while everything was running perfectly but now all videos in Windows Media Center are jerky (the sound is fine, they just seem to skip a ton of frames all the time). This is on the local machine, but the same thing happens when I try to stream to my Xbox. The videos all show fine in VLC and Windows Media Player. I guess I must have installed something recently (in the process of getting all the apps I usually have running on my PC) that caused this but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I have updated to the latest video driver (and then rolled back to the standard Windows 7 driver), I have rolled back all the other drivers that I have installed (I believe). I have uninstalled all the codec packs (I also run TVersity, so I hate the TVersity codec pack installed), and I uninstalled TVersity. Nothing seems to help. I have uninstalled windows media center, and reinstalled it from the Programs and Features. I have basically ran out of things to try to fix this, and am almost thinking about reinstalling Windows again. Any suggestions?

• XP Pro freezes on welcome screen

  I have a problem that sounds much the same as http://superuser.com/questions/83101/how-to-diagnose-a-freeze-on-startup-in-windows-xp About every 2nd or 3rd boot, XP-Pro freezes on the Welcome page (the one showing the user name icons). The mouse moves the cursor OK, but clicking on an icon does nothing, and neither does any keystroke. If you press too many keys there is a beep and after that the mouse won't move the cursor anymore. The work-around is always to reboot into Safe mode and request a CHKDSK /R After this, the next boot is fine. There are no related entries in the Event log when the problem occurs. The only two entries are: "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 3 Multiprocessor Free." "The Event log service was started." Update 1: Many thanks for that but I found no problems with any diagnostics I have run. But, I have managed to locate, and code round, the source of the problem - which is with whatever processing goes on behind the XP Welcome (as opposed to "classic") login screen. Unfortunately, having classic login means you don't get the useful Fast User Switching (FUS) login/switch mode. So, to retain this, my fix is: Add a Windows shutdown script (using gpedit.msc) to force "classic" mode for the first logon after next XP startup, by running: reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v LogonType /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Add a Scheduled Task to run at User Logon that enables Welcome screen (and hence FUS) by running the same command with 1 instead of 0 after the /d flag. The task is run as a privileged user (who can run "reg add").

  [PROBLEM] Hello everyone. I have a small issue here. We are trying to get our exchange accounts for students only ported over from an exchange server 2003 to the Microsoft cloud services known as live @ EDU. The problem we are having is that in order to do this we need to install 2 pieces of software 1: OLSync 2: Microsoft Identity Life cycle Manager "Download the Galsync.msi here" the "Here" link takes you to a page that needs a login for an admin account for live @ EDU. That part works. However once logged in it redirects to a page that states: https://connect.microsoft.com/site185/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=26407 Page Not Found The content that you requested cannot be found or you do not have permission to view it. If you believe you have reached this page in error, click the Help link at the top of the page to report the issue and include this ID in your e-mail: afa16bf4-3df0-437c-893a-8005f978c96c [WHAT I NEED] I need to download that file. Does anyone know of an alternative location for that installation file? I also need to obtain Identity Lifecycle Management (ILM) Server 2007, Feature Pack 1 (FP1). If anyone has any helpful information that would be fantastic! As well if anyone has completed a migration of account from a on site exchange 2003 server to the Microsoft Live @ EDU servers any general guidance would be helpful! Thanks in advance.

• How to disable irritating Office File Validation security alert?

  I have Microsoft Office 2007 running on Windows 7. Yesterday I updated Office to the latest service pack, i.e. SP3. This morning, when opening an MS Word document (.doc format, and a document I created myself some months ago) I was greeted with a new dialog box saying: Security Alert - Office File Validation WARNING: Office File Validation detected a problem while trying to open this file. Opening this is probably dangerous, and may allow a malicious user to take over your computer. Contact the sender and ask them to re-save and re-send the file. For more security, verify in person or via the phone that they sent the file. Including two links to some microsoft blabla webpage. Obviously the document is safe as I created it myself some months ago. How to disable this irritating dialog box? (On a sidenote, a rethorical question: Will Microsoft never learn? I consider myself a power user in Word, but I have no clue what could be wrong with my document so that it is considered dangerous. Let alone more basic users of Word. Sigh....)

I have uninstalled javascript and reinstalled but still the same. I am using chrome. • repo sync "CyanogenMod/android_prebuilt" size and resume capability.?

  I'm downloading CyanogenMod-10.1 source on a low speed broadband. About 4GB of source is downloaded . In that 4GB, there is a big project "CyanogenMod/android_frameworks_base" which alone took 1GB of download without any interruption. Ok now, after 4GB of download, my internet got disconnected and I had to stop (ctrl + z) repo sync while it was downloading the project "CyanogenMod/android_prebuilt". Before I stopped repo sync the android_prebuilt got downloaded till 250MB and is at 42percent. I checked the working folder and there is a file "tmp_pack_df5CKb" of size 250MB in the path "$WORKING_DIR/.repo/projects/prebuilt.git/objects/pack/" . Then I restarted repo sync and it was downloading the android_prebuilt project. But I'm not sure if it was downloading from start or resuming from 250MB. While downloading this time , the previous "tmp_pack_df5CKb" isn't deleted and the content is being downloaded to a new file "tmp_pack_HPfvFG". I heard repo sync cannot be resumed for a project. But here, since the previous file isn't deleted I want to ask if android_prebuilt is resuming or downloading from start again? Now that my high speed internet is over (current speed 256kbps), I'm not sure if I can download the remaining ~4GB if single project is in size 500 MB.

• Issues regarding internet connectivity

  Hello. My problem started when Yahoo Messenger stopped connecting. I've tried to see if Internet Explorer was working but will not load any page. The diagnostics of Internet Explorer says that is something wrong with my dns(using just ip of google or yahoo or my local webserver was not working). I use Windows 7 and at the moment i've had Internet Explorer 8 and after a lot of failing updates to ie9 I've successfully install the Romanian version of IE9(now i have ie8 after a system restore). Then I installed the service pack 1. I've done a lot of things and I will try to enumerate them, but my problem persists. Settings from Yahoo Messenger and Internet Explorer are OK. I've try to reset winsock and ip from netsh. I've scanned my pc with spybot, mallwarebytes, Trojan Remover(simplysup), Loaris Trojan Remover, Avast, Nod32, Kaspersky, Bitdefender,alot of registry cleaner including CCleaner and maybe others that I cannot remember now. I reset the registry permissions using subinacl. At a moment my files permissions was set jut to "trusted installer" and I've put the permission back to files and folders using the model of other windows 7 machine. I have try so many things that now i'm stuck in a loop using different security tools to check for problems. Oh, and my virtual machines are working just fine.(I'm using VirtualBox) Please Help. PS, Reinstalling Windows is not an option. Thank you!

• How to handle sh: fetch: command not found

  Okay, I'm a noobie. I know how to build and compose a website, but I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to servers and server commands, etc. I've recently had a problem with all of my sites on our servers going down all at once and then I have to go in and reboot the server for them to come up again. At first this was annoying, but now it is becoming agonizing as it now takes 3-4 reboots for the websites to come back up. I contacted support for my hosting, but they are not being very helpful. They just keep telling me what the issue might be and basically telling me that I'm going to have to look into it and figure it out, which really isn't possible since I know nothing. Anyway, here are the things they said were possible reasons: They said I have "strange logs" in my Apache webserver log, error: sh: fetch: command not found. My php.ini memory limit is: 256M which is very high. It should be 32M or 64M. Server is reaching Max Clients, meaning we have more than 150 visitors at a time. (They supposedly "fixed" this, but the sites/server are still going down) I have some Wordpress sites with plugins getting errors like: PHP Warning: pack(): Type H: illegal hex digit G in... PHP Fatal error: Cannot use object of type stdClass as array in... PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in... PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function file_exists() in... PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' I know that's a lot, but I really am at wits end and have no idea what to do now. If anyone could maybe give me some advice or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!   I currently have an issue with Windows Explorer. It keeps crashing when I browse through a network drive. This is happening on several computers. • Server 2008 Print Redirection is failing but only on 16Bit apps

Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed". Eventvwr has no related issues to the print fail Any help greatly appreciated. So far 2 days spent trying to resolve and here goes my weekend :( unless someone has an idea :) Things I have Tried i.   I work for a software development company but the issue doesn't seem to be programming-related. Here is my setup: Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3, all updated Program that sends UDP datagrams Program that receives UDP datagrams Windows Firewall set to allow inbound UDP datagrams on a specific port (Scope: Subnet) If I send a UDP datagram on any port to other, similar machines, it goes through. If I send the UDP datagram to the same computer running the program that sends (whether using broadcast, localhost IP or the specific IP of the machine), the receiver program gets nothing. I've traced the problem down to the Windows XP Firewall, as Windows 7 does not have this problem (and I do not wish to sully my hands with Vista). If the exception I create for that UDP port in the WinXP firewall is set for a Scope of Subnet the datagram is blocked, but if I set it to All Computers or specifically enter my network settings (192.168.2.161 or 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0) it works fine. Using different UDP ports makes no difference. I've tried different programs to reproduce this problem (ServerTalk to send and either IP Port Spy or PortPeeker to receive) to make sure it's not our code that's the issue, and those programs' datagrams were blocked as well. Also, that computer only has one network interface, so there are no additional network weirdness. I receive my IP from a DHCP server, so this is a straightforward setup. Given that it doesn't happen in Windows 7 I must assume it's a defect in the Windows XP Firewall, but I'd think someone else would have encountered this problem before. Has anyone encountered anything like this? Any ideas?

• Ubuntu server crashes; need help figuring how to figure out why

  I have a 768 Slice at slicehost.com running Ubuntu Server 8.04.2 LTS (hardy) with a LAMP stack on it that periodically crashes, though why I am not sure. From what I can tell, there is a process that basically goes rogue and consumes all the memory on the slice, suffocating all the other programs running until the whole thing comes to a grinding halt, and I have to do a hard reboot of the slice to get it back up and running again. I can't detect any pattern for this (it seems to happen about once a month, more or less). Here's a screenshot of my console during the last crash: I would assume that a possible cause might a PHP script or an apache configuration rule that might cause the crash if triggered? How would I be able to find out which one is the offending one? I've checked and rechecked all my PHP scripts, and running them doesn't seem to trigger the crash. I've also been able to log on to my system during a crash and see what's running (with top), but I can't tell how the offending process was started, so I can't trace the root of the problem! I know my description is overly generic, but unfortunately my expertise in tracking down the source of these glitches is very limited. If you need any additional information about my system in order to help me figure this out, please let me know in the comments, and I will append it to the question. My only other lead as to the culprit here is Wordpress, which we have installed on this server. • Toshiba Satellite P755D USB 3.0 Drivers Missing - Windows 7 Professional

  I bought a Toshiba Satellite P755D recently and installed Windows 7 Professional on the machine. It runs great. But I noticed the exclamation point in the yellow triangle icon in the Device Manager next to the Universal Serial Buss (USB) Controller (I'm assuming this is the USB 3.0 controller because mine doesn't recognize devices). Normally, when this kind of thing happens I go to the manufacturer's website and download appropriate drivers and call it a day. But not this time... I browsed to my model and found no driver for the USB 3.0 controller. I tried other HW and Utility drivers, thinking they would be bundled. No luck. I tried looking up the motherboard in my machine. Generic name, no luck. I then called Toshiba technical support and they tried basic troubleshooting, eg, uninstall device, reboot, for auto-installation; no luck. I popped the Windows 7 disk back in and tried to get information that way, no luck. Finally, the technical support guy said he would look into the engineer's system to see if there was a specific driver available and that's where I'm at. The technician told me that these USB 3.0 drivers come within the native driver pack in windows but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any ideas? EDIT - See attached screen shots.

• Internet Explorer not working after establishing a SSTP VPN connection

  I have a problem which is constantly appearing on each Windows 7 computer I'm using, whenever I establish a SSTP VPN connection to a ForeFront TMG 2010 firewall; it only happens with SSTP connections, not PPTP/L2TP ones. The problem appears only if using a proxy server for Internet access; it doesn't happen when directly accessing the Internet (with or without NAT). It doesn't seem to depend on a specific proxy software being used (I've seen it happening with various ones). The problem is: as soon as I start the VPN connection, Internet Explorer can't access anything anymore. I'm not using the VPN connection as a default gateway, and I can succesfully ping the proxy server after the VPN connection is esatablished (and even telnet to its 8080 TCP port), so this is definitely not a routing problem. Also, the problem is specifically related to Internet Explorer: while it seems not able to connect to any site, other programs (such as FireFox) have no problem accessing the Internet through the same proxy. This behaviour can be easily reproduced on any Windows 7 computer (the service pack and patch level doesn't seem to matter at all). Have IE connect through a proxy, establish a SSTP VPN connection... and IE will just not work anymore until the VPN connection is dropped.

  Hi, I've recently been chasing an issue with a client's db... solution found, but impossible to recreate. Essentially, we're doing a Select * from mytable where ArbitraryColumn = 75 Where MyTable has an Identity column, called 'MyIndentityColumn' - incremented by one in each insert. Naturally, and normally I would assume that the order returned would be the order in which they are inserted (bad assumption, but one which was forced onto me, through an inherited application - which has been patched). Essentially, I would like suggestions as to why the database, when restored to my local machine (same OS, same SQL server version - 200 sp3) same collation, and same backup instance restored on it, as a test DB on the client site. When I perform the above select, I get them in order of insert (i.e. identity column ordered ascending). On the client, it seems random (but the same 'random' order each time)... A few other points: I have the same collation on my test server as client Same DB backup restored to a test only I can access Same SQL server version and service pack Same OS Test DB is a new DB - new log and MDF... I have the problem 'solved' by adding an explicit order by clause but I want to undertand the cause of the issue, given the exact nature of my attempts to recreate it beuing futile, and perfectly recreatable on the client server... • IIS not responding with SSL Server Hello

  I'm having difficulty getting a particular IIS machine to "do" SSL. This is a test environment (one of many) which we've set up "the same" as we have many times previously, but it just doesn't seem to be working. The server is Windows Server 2003 (Version 5.2 (Build 3790.srv03_sp2_gdr.100216-1301 : Service Pack 2)) IIS is hosting 4 sites (including the default site), but only one site is configured for SSL. We're using the same SSL certificate we use on all of our other servers (it's a wildcard cert). (Don't think this is relevant, but including anyway) We've configured the site to require SSL, it has a subdirectory that doesn't require SSL but has an asp page that redirects into SSL. The 403;4 error page for the site is hooked up to this asp page (this is how we do our non-HTTPS into HTTPS transition). Using Microsoft Network Monitor (3.3), I've just run a session against a server where SSL is working. It can pull apart the SSL exchange as the following messages: SSL: Client Hello SSL: Server Hello. Certificate. Server Hello Done SSL: Client Key Exchange. Change Cipher Spec. Encrypted Handshake Message. SSL: Change Cipher Spec. Encrypted Handshake Message However, on our problem server, I only see: SSL: Client Hello. The next packet from the server (from port 443, so it's listening and responding there) contains only 60 bytes, and just seems to have the Tcp headers and not much else (but I'm by no means an expert at deciphering these things). So, where do I look next? Or what additional information do I need to add to this question, and where do I find it?

• Completed downloads freeze Windows

  The Issue Shortly after a file download via Google Chrome for Windows completes, the download will get stuck on "0 seconds left" and all other programs (except Google Chrome, for some reason, but browsing will not work) completely freezes into Windows' infamous "Not Responding" state, affecting Explorer particularly badly. Eventually, the programs will recover themselves but they will recover significantly faster if you cancel the file download, relative to how quickly you react. Performing the exact same operation immediately after cancelling the download usually works without issue. This issue occurs when with any file type (.ZIP, .MSI, .MSG, .PNG, .URL, etc) of any size from any source (Dropbox, SourceForge, Imgur, even tiny and locally-generated BLObs created by my own Chrome extension, etc) to any location.   Potential Causes As this issue is so inconsistent, I haven't been able to prove whether the issue is Chrome-specific or being caused by my system or my Chrome configuration but it's happening on both my work and home PCs. I originally suspected that this issue was being caused by security software scanning completed downloads for threats but I'm not as confident in that theory anymore as the issue persisted even after changing my security software from ESET NOD32 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro to ESET Endpoint to Microsoft Security Essentials.   System Information (of both PCs) Windows version: 7 Service Pack 1 64-bit Google Chrome version: 30.0.1599.101 (but has been happening for a long time)   Screenshots

• Recover data from Dynamic Disk (MBR) bigger than 2TB

  Here is the situation: Promise Array FastTrak TX4310 with 3 disks (750 GB each) in RAID5. This comes to around 1500 GB of data. Last week I had the idea of expanding the RAID with an additional 750 GB disk. This would bring the volume to around 2250 GB. I plugged the disk and used the Webpam software to do the RAID expansion. However, I didn't count with the MBR 2TB limit, as I didn't remembered that the disk was using MBR instead of GPT and I didn't check it prior to the expansion. After a couple of days of expansion, today when I got home, the disk in Windows disk manager showed the message "Invalid disk" and when I try to activate it, it says "The operation is not allowed on the Invalid pack". From what I figured, the logical volume on the RAID expanded, and passed that info to the Windows layer and I ended up with an "larger than 2TB" MBR disk. I'm hopping that somehow I can still recover some data from this, and I was wondering if I can "rewrite" the MBR structure back to the 1500 GB partition size, so I can access the partition in Windows. Right now I'm doing an "Analyse" with TestDisk, as I hope the program will pickup the old 1500 structure and allow me to somehow revert back to it. I think that even though the Logical Drive in the RAID is bigger than the 2TB, I can somehow correct the MBR to show the 1500 GB partition again. I had a similar problem once, and I was able to recover the data using a similar method. What do you guys think? Is it a dead end? Am I totally screwed because there is the extra RAID layer that I'm not counting? Or is there other way to move with this? Thanks all!

• Windows VirtualBox failed to attach USB device to Linux Guest

  I have Windows 7 64bit Host system, and I am using VirtualBox 4.1.18 (r78361). I have an Arch Linux Guest OS. I have installed VirtualBox Extension Pack (to enable USB2 support) and added my USB device filter to VM. I have also installed the Guest Additions provided by Arch: virtualbox-archlinux-additions (but I have no idea whether it's actually needed for my environment). I can see my USB device from VirtualBox Devices menu. Whenever I am trying to access it, I end up with: Failed to attach the USB device Kingston DT 100 G2 [0100] to the virtual machine Archlinux. • Winamp has slow /skipping video playback on Windows 7

  Hello, I have Windows 7 x64 (7600 90-day trial version) and Winamp 5.6 installed. When I play a video in Windows Media Player, the video plays smooth, however when I play a video in winamp, the video is mostly ok when played back at the original size (but not completely), but if I play it back in fullscreen, the playback gets really slow. The video's audio track plays just fine. I have a DELL XPS 420 computer (8GB of RAM) with a Nvidia GeForce 8800 CTS 512 video card. I've updated to the latest drivers. I have the default Windows 7 codecs, and the CCCP codec pack which used to be all I needed under Windows XP to play all types of videos. Are the codecs needed for Windows Y the same? What's going on? UPDATE: As suggested, I turned off Aero and winamp ran just fine again. So I just have to wait for winamp to be rewritten to work with the way Vista/Windows 7 runs? UPDATE 2: Winamp has updated their player, and it works great with Windows 7 now.
