  • How to properly set up Sun's JDK?

    I'm trying to manually install the Sun JDK package (I have my reasons, don't bother asking why). I've successfully extracted the .bin file into /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_23, but the problem is the PATH variable. I added this line to the /etc/environment file: JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_23" and added JAVA_HOME/bin to the PATH variable, BUT the OS still doesn't recognise the command java, says it's not installed and offers me gcj and openjdk. There was another way by using java-package and converting the .bin to .deb installer, but unfortunately that package is not available on/for maverick, so I can't do it that way. How can I make the PATH variable work and is there anything else required apart from the environment variables to make it all work? When I try to use the update-java-alternatives -l command, it says the following: awk: cannot open /usr/lib/jvm/*.jinfo (No such file or directory) jdk1.6.0_23 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_23 What should be the name of the file and the contents of it?

  • Analyze log files from many languages using a single tool. And recommendations of logging frameworks

    We have a system build on lots of languages. The ones we are interested in logging, in order of priority, are: C/C++ PHP C# Bash Java Wish list: If it is possible, we would like logging to be achieved from the above languages in such a way that we may use a single log viewing tool for all of them. Ideally they would be in the same format, but next to that in as few formats as possible and readable from as many log file viewers as possible. If it is possible logging to a single log file or a set of log files would be nice. With a possibility to filter based on the source language that is being logged. We would like to copy the log files (or should be log to a database and copy it instead?) from multiple servers to a single location. So that we can analyze the log files from many servers at the same time (to see if any of our servers execute a certain piece legacy code for example). Being able to change logging level at runtime would be nice. Thank you for reading! It's quite a complex problem, I hope someone has wrestled with it before and has some valuable information!

I am writing dictionary app for IPhone, which support multiple languages. So my requirement is to display the English keyboard when user has selected English language and show Dutch keyboard when user has selected Dutch and so on. So i was wondering if this is possible?   • Why is free() not allowed in garbage-collected languages?

    I was reading the C# entry on Wikipedia, and came across: Managed memory cannot be explicitly freed; instead, it is automatically garbage collected. Why is it that in languages with automatic memory management, manual management isn't even allowed? I can see that in most cases it wouldn't be necessary, but wouldn't it come in handy where you are tight on memory and don't want to rely on the GC being smart?

I've read countless theory and tutorials on ANTLR and JavaCC, but I can't figure out how to actually make it do something useful. I learn best by "taking something apart and putting it back together again", so, are there any working examples of simple languages implemented with the help of tools such as ANTLR, or similar?     C++ is my first language, and as such I'm used to whitespace being ignored. However, I've been toying around with Python, and I don't find it too hard to get used to the whitespace rules. It seems, however, that a lot of programmers on the Internet can't get past the whitespace rules. From what I've seen, peoples' C++ programs tend to be formatted very consistently with respect to whitespace (or else it's pretty hard to read), so why do some people have such a problem with whitespace-based languages like Python?

    Hi, I'm learning Ruby, and I'm starting to play with building extensions in C. I have Programming Ruby The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide and so I can follow that for the basic nuts and bolts. What I was wondering is if there already existed some nifty frameworks/whatever to help interoperability between Ruby and other languages, with C++ being the most important for me.     When constructing a website, say a Q&A site or a just a forum site for a community, is just knowing HTML,CSS,PHP, MySQL, and javascript enough to make the site dynamic? I am saying this because when I talked with my teacher, he said that major sites use many languages combined. And he said that a site shouldn't be designed only in PHP. So is it possible to create a good website, not e-commerce, with only html,css, and php?
