Is there any possibility to use Amazon S3 for Mac OS X time machine backups?
Or in other words: Use S3 rather an external hard disk for time machine backups?
I'm trying to add a new keyboard layout for a non admin user on my mac.
I had thought that the keyboard layout would be applied for all users when I added it to mine but alas no.
I cannot get into the Users\\library\keyboard layouts
folder, as it won't let me (but I'm an admin FFS!)
I even went into 'get info' and set it to 'everyone read and write' but it still tells me that I don't have permission
How on earth can I update the other user's keyboard layout folder?
I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8 behind a company firewall and have proxy settings and username / password through which I can connect to internet. The internet is working as I am posting this question through it, but if I try to open Facebook or Gmail the following message appears:
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?[..]” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”
What could be wrong?
I'm trying the fish shell in Mac OS X, intalled using MacPorts. I'd like to have the title of my Terminal window be my current directory. Currently, the title just says
Terminal - fish - 80x24
According to the fish documentation, the default fish_title function should provide this behavior. It doesn't do the right thing in Terminal.app, although it does work with iTerm. Defining my own fish_title function doesn't fix the problem.
Has anybody been able to get this to work?
On the Mac, there is a hugely useful iStat Menus. It displays all kinds of statuses, such as CPU/RAM/Disk utilization, HD temperature, etc...
Is there something similar for Windows XP?
Now that I've upgraded my Mac OS X to Snow Leopard, Cyberduck does not work.
What are some good replacements?
I would like to have both ftp and sftp compatibilities.
Alt-Tab or Command-Tab can sometimes be slow, especially when you have many windows open and you frequently switch to only a few of those windows. How do you work around this problem -- any tool to switch to desired windows (most frequently accessed) directly, other than tapping the Alt-Tab combination multiple times?
Note: This should work on Windows 7, Linux and Mac.
Update: Please post your keyboard-shortcut solutions (using the mouse cannot be any faster - especially when you were touch-typing/writing-code before switching to a window).
I have a macbook running OS X v10.5.8.
What is the latest version of Mac OS X for the macbook pro?
How can I update my OS to use latest version of XCode?
I've been using Quicksilver for a while now but lately I've been getting this problem that QS doesn't show the Acrobat Reader icon when a PDF is selected, but goes to the "Open With" tab.
See the screenshot here: http://skitch.com/niels.bom/n8nw5/google-reader-1000
Is this a bug? Or did I somehow bork a preference setting?
I'm using QS B54, 3815, which is the latest AFAIK and Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Thanks!
As admin (root) for a group of computers, I have to now install a content filter on a shared Mac, to first catch illegal downloads, and to prevent future peer to peer DL by monitoring. I can install the OSX app for myself (as admin) and have it run for any new users, but I have to have it installed and enabled it for existing users.
How can I install an OSX app, to run for normal users, when it requires that it be install as admin (root) for each user?
Does anyone know of some good Mac software to sync a network attached storage device or a drobo to Amazon S3?
I'd love to mail them a storage device for the first dump and then do nightly syncs.
I am trying to run the Safari browser (on Mac OS 10.4) from the command line, as follows:
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari http://localhost/dev/myfile.html
However, Safari starts up and tries to access
file:///Users/charlesanderson/scripts/http://localhost/dev/myfile.html
/Users/charlesanderson/scripts happens to be my current directory.
Can someone explain why Safari does this? Firefox is much better behaved?
I wasn't able to run X11 or Terminal after rebooting my Mac. After digging around, I got them to work when I commented-out this line in my .cshrc:
xset b off
It appears that xset will attempt to launch X11 if it isn't running already, and since X11 will launch the default shell through xterm and thus encounter the xset line above, we will have an infinite loop.
I would like to keep the above line in my .cshrc. Is there a way to prevent X11 from launching itself?
Hi,
The server was upgraded from 10.5 from 10.6, during the upgrade the Reverse Zones were lost so I tried to recreate these but found that it's best to delete all zones, definitions and start again.
So I've started again and Reverse Zones are appearing but I'm still having issues. I receive the following errors (if they help)
01-Nov-2010 12:52:01.254 client 192.168.1.52#57051: view com.apple.ServerAdmin.DNS.public: query (cache) 'server.dev.home.gateway/A/IN' denied
01-Nov-2010 12:59:24.487 client 192.168.1.52#52858: view com.apple.ServerAdmin.DNS.public: query (cache) 'earth.server.dev.home.gateway/A/IN' denied
At the moment I have the following setup in the DNS
1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. Reverse Zone
192.168.1.100 Reverse Mapping MacPro-Server.local.
server.dev. Primary Zone
server.dev. Machine 192.168.1.100
earth.server.dev. Alias server.dev.
I'm a happy owner of a hackintosh-ed Dell Mini 9. I would love to hear the success stories from other people who have managed to install Mac OS X successfully on other brands and models of netbooks.
"Exceptionally friendly" here is defined as having, at minimum, fully functioning wireless, sound and graphics when installed with an unmodified version of OS X Leopard.
I'm a new user of Mac OS X on my laptop. Currently I have Windows 7 and OS X on the same machine.
I can't figure out how to use the desktop correctly, no hard drive show, no right clicks, etc. Can someone explain the difference?
Hello!
2 days ago I found out that iTunes interface become buggy. Here are some screenshots:
UI bugs in listview headers:
iTunes doesn't download app icons in App Store:
CoverFlow doesn't show album arts:
Finder and other apps are working well, without any artifacts.
Macbook 062 (Intel C2D 2.13, GMA950), Mac OS X 10.6.2, iTunes 9.0.2.
I have reinstalled iTunes via Apple's site - nothing.
What do you advice to do?
What I am wanting to do is create a home radio station that I can have my friends listen to on our speakers throughout the house. I will use Djay to DJ the station and I was wondering how to stream the audio from Djay on my MacBook (Where I will be DJ'ing) to a Mac Mini (Where the audio will be sent to the speakers from).
Thanks in advance!
When I log into my mac on 10.6.3 I get the following error in my console
29/05/2010 19:11:43 prometheus rpc.statd[109] Warning Failed to contact host aphrodite.lan: RPC: Unknown host
Now I know that rpc is trying to contact a non existent host but what I can't figure out is why and how to stop it.
Any ideas?
I just bought a magic mouse and connected it to my mac computer. The only things that are working are the right and left click. It is not even bringing up that scrolling thing in system preferences. Does anyone know what could be wrong?
My hard disk crashed and I need to reinstall Mac OS X. I restart, insert the installation DVD, press c on the keyboard and the dvd ejects. I've tried different DVDs, even CDs. It's a Macbook Pro from march 2008.
Is it broken? Or can it be something more severe like the firewire controller on the motherboard (since I noticed this after my hard drive started to act strangely)? I've ran Apple Hardware Test successfully.
Hi,
I am using MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5). On the status bar, check I click the Wireless icon, it said 'Open Network Preferences'
And then in the Network Preference, I click 'AirPort' tab, the status said 'Inactive' But the 'Turn AirPort on' is disabled and the Network Name is disabled as well.
I have unlocked the preference pane as well.
So how can I turn on Airport?
Thank you.
No obvious problems with my Mac OS X 10.5 system, but Drive Genius 1.5.1 says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" when doing a "Verify"
The "repair" and "rebuild" options fail.
I did some googling, and the consensus as:
1- Drive Genius is slightly better than Disk Warrior
2- This problem is likely not fixable.
My assumed solution is that I should do a full backup and re-format.
How can I do an inverse ARP lookup in Windows and/or Linux? Say that I have the MAC address of wireless access point which is up and running in the network, but I forgot it's IP address?
Hi,
I am starting to use Quicksilver in Mac OS X. At the moment I just know how to "call it" (CMD+I in my case) and open an app. I wonder how could I do, once itunes is running, just to tell to stop playing a song, using QS, and if not, someother workaround, just using Keyboard, in the simplest possible wy.
Thanks
