    Hi I need to control a Windows 7 PC via VNC from a Mac in an office LAN. Since the IPs are dynamically assigned, I'd like the PC to appear in my "Places" and in the automatically detected nearby servers in VNC client I'm using -- both of which require the PC to advertise its VNC server via Samba (right?). I tried installing ultravnc, which works when I access it directly by IP, but it doesn't seem to advertise itself in the network. Any ideas?

In the past I have been able to get away with just doing some simple number crunching at the end of each year to do my taxes, but my company has grown substantially over the last year, and now that I am sitting down to do my taxes it has become an absolute nightmare because none of my information is organized at all.     I've been using (and enjoy using) Windows 7 through bootcamp on my mac for some time now. The only problem I've been having is with the audio, I seem to get a low hissing noise which is more prevalent when wearing headphones. Whilst it's not stopping me from using Windows 7 it's something I'd like fixed. I've tried downloading the latest drivers from Realteks website, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

  • Set default input/output sound

    I have a mac that is hooked into a sound board, I have external sound card that interfaces between the computer and the soundboard, this works great. However, whenever the computer restarts it sets the input & output to the 'internal microphone' and the 'built in output'. I'd like to default to the other soundcard. How can I do this? I'm running OS 10.6.3

  • Only a Macs can connect to WIFI with WPA-Personal security on.

    I have an odd issue with a Netgear WIFI router, 4 computers, 2 pc laptops with XP and 7 installed, one macbook pro and one older mac mini. With security off everything can connect to the wifi. With WPA-Security on only the macs can connect to the wifi. I've reset the Netgear router, done everything again from scratch, no deal. The PCs just can't connect.

  • Browser displays 'Apache is functioning normally' when I enter 'http://you/' in the location bar

    I am on a Mac and when I enter http://you/ in the location bar, it displays 'Apache is functioning normally' no matter which browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) I am using. Is this normal? Or could it be that my computer is hacked in some way and is now acting as a server for the hackers? EDIT: I originally wanted to go to the youtube.com, but entered http://you/ by accident and found out this strange behavior.

    ive been trying to install vmware workstation on my windows 7 computer. i know ive alreadey posted something simmalar to this, but this totally different situation. whenever i open the installer, this grey window labbeled vmware workstation setup opens and nothing happens. works on vista, but i dont use my vista for this kinda stuff anymore. Help PS: if this looks like mac to you, it isnt. it is windows 7 with zeusosx theming.

  • How can I unbind a UDP port that has no entry in lsof?

    On my Mac, I have a UDP port that is "already in use", but doesn't have an associated process: sudo netstat -na | grep "udp.*\.500\>" shows udp4 0 0 192.168.50.181.500 *.* udp4 0 0 192.168.29.166.500 *.* sudo lsof doesn't show a process on port 500 (ie sudo lsof -i:500 -P reports nothing). Note I'm using 'sudo' on both commands so it should show all processes. (rebooting works, but looking for something less disruptive) How can I unbind port 500 so I can use it again?

  • ssh sessions in xterms freeze for many minutes whenever they disconnect

    If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so. There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

  • How can I modify keyboard shortcuts for Firefox?

    I recently started using Firefox as my primary web browser, and I would like to change some of the default keyboard shortcuts, especially the ones used to switch between tabs. Can this be done?     I use a Stinkyboard Footboard to enter shortcuts with my feet on my mac. This works fine, the Footboard is recognized as another USB keyboard and the shortcuts are working. One thing that is not working is to assign two Keys like ALT + SHIFT to the foot pedal and then add another key like 1 with the keyboard I use with my hands. Is there a way to make this two keyboards combine its input into one shortcut?

  • Terrible sound listening to Radio 1 on iPlayer specifically

    Just recently while listening to radio 1 online, the sound quality has become horrible, sounds all crackly and underwater. I've tried reinstalling Flash, and radios 2/3/4 sound fine. It almost sounds like there are two playing at once. When I listen to it through a WMA stream (Flip4Mac), it's fine. Any ideas? Mac OS 10.6.3 Flash 10.0.45.2

  • Open application with lowered privileges

    I have a mac installer which runs as root with pre and post install bash scripts. At the end of the post install script I launch the application which inherits and opens as root. Is there a way I can lower the permissions back down to the user that ran the installer and then open the app? Or a more hackish way I can set the app to open in some scheduler from the script, which then gets opened by the scheduler which would have the users permissions
