• Not enough space left in the hard drive. How to proceed?

  Where do I begin... I can hardly do anything on Ubuntu 12.04. I am very close to removing and returning to Windows. First I could not load it because the graphics appeared to be running low but somehow that stopped happening and I could log on. Now I can not download anything or I get this message Cannot write: No space left on device. I tried trouble shooting this issue but every time I try and fix the problem I am blocked by this message E: Write error - write (28: No space left on device) E: Can't mmap an empty file E: Failed to truncate file - ftruncate (9: Bad file descriptor) E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. $ OLD=$(ls -tr /boot/vmlinuz-* | head -n -2 | cut -d- -f2- | awk '{print "linux-image-" $0}') Ubuntu is also running incredibly slow and I cant get anything done! Please help this is driving me mad!

• Algorithm development in jobs

  I have a mathematics background but also consider career in some form of software development. In particular I'm interested in finding out what sort of industries are most likely to have more algorithm development/mathematical and logical problem solving slant rather than pure application development etc. Obviously, I'm assuming that some subset of the canonical data structures and associated algorithms (trees, lists, hash tables, sets, maps with search, insert, traversals etc.) are mostly going to be present in software development. However, where am I more likely to encounter problems of more discrete maths nature (combinatorial, graph theory, sets, strings, ...) explicitly or more likely in disguise. Any pointers much appreciated (including possible open source projects that I could use for my further search for applications and also possibly contribute to).

• How do I design a web service (microsoft) that can be consumed by multiple end points?

  My company is planning to implement a solution in multiple applications that will help to validate mailing addresses at the point of data entry. We're using UPS's Extended Address Validation (XAV) web service API to validate the addresses. Our current plan is to build a .NET web service that can be used to communicate between our applications and the UPS API. We have applications in VB6, classic ASP, and .NET 2.0, so we'd like to implement a solution that can be easily consumed by each of these programming environments. What are our (Microsoft) options for designing a web service that can be consumed by multiple clients? In particular, is there a way to design a single web service that can respond with JSON (in case we want to validate our web page using javascript) in addition to XML? I'm new to designing web services and want to make sure we consider all of our options. I've heard terms like asmx, WCF, OData, etc., but I don't know which frameworks will support what we're trying to do and where to start.

• New 12.10 Install, Windows Not in Boot Menu

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my new computer alongside my previous Windows 7 installation. Upon booting for the first time (post install) my boot menu only lists Ubuntu. I installed using a liveCD, I had to set up my partitions myself because my Windows wasn't being detected (I set up the new partition out of free space on the drive.). I know Ubuntu did not overwrite my Windows because I can mount the Windows drive and access the files from here I also tried running boot-repair, as was recommended for people who didn't have Ubuntu showing up in the menu, but now I just have two different Ubuntu options. Still no windows. (if you require any additional data [logs, etc.], could you tell me how to find it, I am a bit new to this.) Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

• How could I manage Google Adsense to approve my Web App? It keeps denying it

  Google adsense keeps denying my app from having ads, because of an "insufficient content" issue. I manage a Web Application that allows the users to set Youtube Videos as Alarm Clocks. It includes an in-site Youtube search to retrieve videos from user queries and lists the users alarms. The site has a good traffic (500 users per day), is currently promoted by Google in Google Chrome Webstore, and the ajax requests are crawlable, following Google's guidelines (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/). Although I understand there is not much content, beyond the user-generated, I really don't what else should I include in the site. Perhaps adding contact and about pages, and maybe another section would increase the navigation. Google argues I need a "fully launched and functioning site, allowing users to navigate throughout your site with a menu, sitemap, or appropiate links". They also ask for "full sentences or paragraphs" Isn't a Google Adsense solutions for Web Applications? Would all the web-apps have to include useless navigable subpages?

  Is there a command that will show which file system (ext3, ext4, FAT32, ...) the various partitions and disks are using? Similar to how sudo fdisk -l lists information about disks and partitions? • Does setting document.domain via script interfere with Google Analytics?

  I have a site, www.example.com, that displays some secure content from forms.example.com in iframes. To enable cross-frame navigation, pages on both sites use JavaScript to set the document.domain to just "example.com". I am using Google Analytics on www.example.com, but the GA site is not showing any data. It indicates that the tracking code is found (the status icon is a green checkmark), but no data is reported. The GA profile lists the website as "www.example.com". Is this a supported scenario? Is my script interfering with the GA code in some way?

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? Customer has foreign key to Address Customer (id, phys_address_id, mail_address_id) Address (id, street, city, etc.) Option 2. Customer has one-to-many relationship to Address, which contains a field to describe the address type Customer (id) Address (id, customer_id, address_type, street, city, etc.) Option 3. Address information is de-normalized and stored in Customer Customer (id, phys_street, phys_city, etc. mail_street, mail_city, etc.) One of my overriding goals is to simplify the object-relational mappings, so I'm leaning towards the first approach. What are your thoughts?

• Using fixtures with factory_girl

  When building the following factory: Factory.define :user do |f| f.sequence(:name) { |n| "foo#{n}" } f.resume_type_id { ResumeType.first.id } end ResumeType.first returns nil and I get an error. ResumeType records are loaded via fixtures. I checked using the console and the entries are there, the table is not empty. I've found a similar example in the factory_girl mailing list, and it's supposed to work. What am I missing? Do I have to somehow tell factory_girl to set up the fixtures before running the tests?

• Alot of Pirated Material on Someone's Website - What Can Be Done?

  Hi, We've developed our website for over 10 years. Recently a website in China has begun to pirate our images and product descriptions (they are showing "new" March offerings). Nearly all of the items they "offer" are ours. Their whois leads to an outfit in France which by chance also hosts a website for Steroids, and both the Steroid and the pirate site share an 800 phone number (coincidence??). The pirate site lists "their" products as being available in mass quantities, though very often the actual product is one-of-a-kind. The images they've stolen appear in google searches alongside our own!! Clicking on any product at the pirate site leads to nowhere. Calls to the 800 number lead to a recorded answer. • What is the best way to read files in an EventMachine-based app?

  In order not to block the reactor I would like to read files asynchronously, but I've found no obvious way of doing it using EventMachine. I've tried a few different approaches, but none of them feels right: Just read the file, it'll block the reactor, but what the hell, it's not that slow (unless it's a big file, and then it definitely is). Open the file for reading and read a chunk on each tick (but how much to read? too much and it'll block the reactor, too little and reading will get slower than necessary). EM.popen('cat some/file', FileReader) feels really weird, but works better than the alternatives above. In combination with the LineAndTextProtocol it reads lines pretty swiftly. EM.attach, but I haven't found any examples of how to use it, and the only thing I've found on the mailing list is that it's deprecated in favour of… EM.watch, which I've found no examples of how to use for reading files. How do you read files within a EventMachine reactor loop?

• Writing scripts for Visual Studio project

  What is the best way to write and run small scripts and tasks that are specific to a particular .Net project? Such things as configuring a database or confirming proper connections to servers. In Ruby, I would build rake tasks for this sort of thing. I am currently using unit tests for these tasks as they are easy to run within VS and they have access to all the necessary libraries and project code. However, this is not really their intended purpose and, with the dropping of Test Lists in VS 2012, it does not work nearly as well as it used to. Is there a better solution than writing a console project to handle these little code snippets I need to run periodically?

Afterwards I proceed with gcc -fopenmp foo.c BUT the output was: gcc: foo.c: No such file or directory gcc: no input files –. • How can I make refactoring a priority for my team?

  The codebase I work with daily has no automated tests, inconsistent naming and tons of comments like "Why is this here?", "Not sure if this is needed" or "This method isn't named right" and the code is littered with "Changelogs" despite the fact we use source control. Suffice it to say, our codebase could use refactoring. We always have tasks to fix bugs or add new features, so no time is put aside to refactor code to be better and more modular, and it doesn't seem to be a high priority. How can I demonstrate the value of refactoring such that it gets added to our task lists? Is it worth it to just refactor as I go, asking for forgiveness rather than permission?

  A newbie here. I am trying to set up Eclipse for Linux Kernel Programming. The guide says set the project location as the root directory of the kernel. Where's the root directory of the kernel now? According to Linux file hierarchy system, it lists /lib as the root directory for shared libraries and kernel modules. I also see /lib32 and /lib64. However, I tried proceeding selecting /lib as the location and eclipse doesn't allow me to create the project.

When I asked the HR for reason, he contacted the technical interviewer and told me that I was syntactically wrong while coding. I used Google Guava for coding.
