  I need to manually install the drivers for my graphics card, which is an ATI 2600 xt. But I am using a 64-bit platform and to do so i need the ia32-libs package. i have scoured the net for fixes, workarounds etc. but have found none that work. the output i get after trying apt-get is: Reading package lists... • How to make the switch to C++11?

  I've been programming in C++ for a while now, but mostly thinks centered around the low-level features of C++. By that I mean mostly working with pointers and raw arrays. I think this behavior is known as using C++ as C with classes despite me only having tried C recently for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised how languages like C# and Java hide these details away in convenient standard library classes like Dictionaries and Lists. I'm aware that the C++ standard library has many convenience containers like vectors, maps and strings as well and C++11 only adds to this by having std:: array and ranged loops. How do I best learn to make use of these modern language features and which are suitable for which moments? Is it correct that software engineering in C++ nowadays I'd mostly free of manual memory management? Lastly, which compiler should I use to make the most of the new standard? Visual Studio has excellent debugging tools, but even VS2012 seems to have terrible C++11 support.

• What's the recommended way of doing a HUD for an android game?

  Basically the question is in the title. I'm creating a RTS game and I will need buttons like attack move / attack ground, etc. I am not using any engine. When people do games in OpenGL for android (my case), do they ever use android components to control the game or do they create their components in the game? What are the general recommended approach, if there's any? How about more complex components like scrolling lists of items , etc?   I'm trying to understand the tutorial 16 at http://ogldev.atspace.co.uk, which requires the image processing library ImageMagick. But when I run the tutorial, I encountered an following error: freeglut: failed to change scree settings Error loading textures 'test.png': no decode delegates for this image format 'C:/../appdata/magick-6024a_cIJcw90t-j'@error/constitute.c/ReadImage/552 I searched for google and found that my ImageMagick library do not have PNG Delegaes, but when I checked for the information of ImageMagick, it sees PNG in its delegate lists.   I was moving a lot of databases from one SQL Server to another, and my applications were giving me errors saying "Login failed for <user>". The user was already in the database with appropriate rights to allowed objects in the database. I tried mapping the user to the database and that's when I got this message: "User Already Exists in the Current Database"... I googled and found this very useful post about orphaned users when moving databases. These are the steps you should take to fix this issue: First, make sure that this is the problem. This will lists the orphaned users: EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Report' If you already have a login id and password for this user, fix it by doing: EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Auto_Fix', 'user' If you want to create a new login id and password for this user, fix it by doing: EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Auto_Fix', 'user', 'login', 'password'

• Does NASA license the software that it develops?

  NASA provides a visualization software called Panoply. There is a Credits and Acknowledgments page that acknowledges and lists the licenses of software dependencies, but provides no information about its own license. I have looked at other software produced by NASA, including the source code for GISS and can not find any information about a licence. The closest information that I can find is in the FAQ for the global climate model EdGCM Global that says the code is in the "public domain" is it standard practice at NASA to release code into the public domain? are there exceptions? Can I assume that Panoply is public domain and can be used without restriction other than than those imposed by licenses of software dependencies? Is the absence of specific permission to reuse the code a concern (this issue was raised in the answer to a separate question) How common is this practice across government agencies?

• Twitter oauth/request_token failing sometimes

  Hello there. I'm implementing Twitters OAuth for Adobe AIR in Javascript. My problem is, that out of 100 requests to api.twitter.com/oauth/request_token about 30 fail with the usual error message: Failed to validate oauth signature and token The other 70% of requests produce a correct response, so I believe that my algorithm for signing is correct. I've read about invalid timestamps in a lot of forums and mailing lists but that is not the problem. My timestamps are correct. I also checked, if the nonces are unique, so that's not the cause either. Any ideas why this is happening?

My question; is this approach secure? is there a better/more efficient way for doing this? All suggestions are welcome.

• FGLRX Drivers Keep Crashing | "Installation Media" reads Natty even though I'm in Precise

  I recently switched back to Ubuntu after a year or so of hardly touching my Ubuntu partition, and upgraded from Natty. Every time I start up, i get the "A problem has occurred..." popup, but it won't let me report it because Precise is not in beta. The details on the report show a segfault, and going through all the details, I notice that it lists Natty under "InstallationMedia" -- I just installed these drivers, so I'm really unsure why it's saying this. I wish I could copy this entire error report, but I see no way of doing that (is it stored somewhere in /var/log?). I'm new to the Unity interface (it's why I stopped using Ubuntu to begin with, but now that I'm getting used to it I'm liking it better). Thanks.

Some days later I wanted to check for updates because the update-manager shows me the following: "The packet information has been updated last 24 days ago." and a window appeared. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. But my Internet connection works fine. I downloaded and installed and run the banish404 software and it does not work. Also I tried with an terminal with 'sudo apt-get update'. What do I have to do?

• Find out if there is a local user logged in when logging in over ssh

  I need to run some calculations on a machine that I can only access remotely but also serves as a work station. There are many of them and I want to pick a "free" one. Free means in this case that no one is logged in locally. My first try was the who command, but for some reason it only lists "selected" users and I can't really find out how they are selected. Next try: ps aux | cut -d " " -f1 | sort | uniq: better showing a bunch of demons but also the local user that was not displayed by who. My current solution is to go in and do ps aux | grep "gnome-session" which is better but still gives me a lot of junk. Ideally I am looking for something that I can include in my ssh profile that warns me about (active) local users when I log in.

• Should I use nodindex, follow or rel canonical?

  I have a site that lists offers, promotions from other websites. Since the offers expire rather quickly I don't save them into my database. I see no point in having a page from 2010 about 30% discount on a certain brand of shoes which isn't availabe anymore. A visitor enters my website; He clicks on the "shoes" category; http://www.mysite.com/shoes/ Here he sees 20 available promotions from different online stores. He clicks on a promotion and gets to a page like this: http://www.mysite.com/shoes/promotions/prada Questions: I use the template promotions.php and list all the promotions. /promotions/prada/ /promotions/otherbrand/ .... What I do is use "noindex, follow" for the links. Is that a good idea? Or should I use rel="canonical" for the promotion page? How do you advise me to handle this from the SEO point of view?

• What is the most complicated data structure you have used in a practical situation?

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

• Experience using IRC to coordinate software development?

  I am part of a growing software project with at least 200 active developer in 10 locations. I would like to set up an on-line chat forum for developers because I think it would help to coordinate efforts. We have an email mailing list but I feel like some questions or announcements are too informal to send to everyone while mentioning it in a chat forum might be a useful community resource. I have never participated in a software project that used an on-line chat forum so I would like to hear about peoples experiences. I am particularly interested in technical issues: Use of IRC vs. alternative platforms; how to manage access, eg. for developers only, allowing users to participate; the value of requiring certain announcements to be made on the chat forum eg who is resolving broken builds etc. If I pitch the idea to the community I would like to have some good arguments why it would be a good idea and some prospective of its usefulness in other software projects.
