• The Oracle Cash Management Secret Very Few Customers Know About

  Did you know that Oracle Cash Management has a robust positioning feature? I had no idea. I was under the mistaken impression that Oracle Cash Management only did bank statement reconciliations. It seems I am not alone. In fact, many Oracle Financials customers are also not aware of this even though it is delivered for free with the Oracle Financials license. Even better, last week, Oracle released an enhancement to Oracle Cash Management for Release 12 that will greatly help customers with their cash positioning needs. As we all know, credit is tight these days. Companies need better visibility of their cash and other liquidity positions to make better use of their cash resources. Today, many customers are managing their cash positions manually using spreadsheets. We also hear how many of them are maintaining larger than normal balances in numerous bank accounts because they just do not have the visibility, and therefore the comfort they need. Although spreadsheets may work in the short-term, they are not the best way to manage your cash positions for the long-term especially if you have dozens, or even hundreds of bank and brokerage accounts. Also, spreadsheets are a lot more risky because they can be overwritten, deleted, difficult to audit, etc. With the newly enhanced positioning feature in Oracle Cash Management, customers can manage their daily cash positions using an excel-like interface that is very flexible and user-configurable. You can link the worksheet to an unlimited number of bank accounts to automatically retrieve your opening balances, the current/intra-day cash inflows and outflows, as well as your expected cash flows from your Fx, Investment and Debt positions if you have Oracle's Treasury module . Oracle Cash Management also has direct integration with Oracle Receivables, Oracle Payables, and Payroll, which adds to the comprehensive picture of what's happening with your organizations' cash in real-time. Here's a screen shot of what the cash positioning page looks like: View image As you can see, your Treasurers can obtain a holistic view of all cash positions across any number of bank accounts as well as other sources of cash flow movements. Depending on how they manage their accounts, they can also use this feature to initiate or monitor bank account sweeps or transfers between their zero balance accounts (ZBA) or cash pools. The cash position worksheet provide drill down for more detail and the ability to manually enter items directly into the worksheet for even greater flexibility and control. Why does this stuff matter? Well, in general, virtualization (or cloud) solutions provide an easy way to create Virtual Machines. Whether it's through a "cloud api" or just a virtualization API. But all you end up with, in the end, is still just a Virtual Machine... Maybe with an OS pre-installed/pre-configured. So you have flexibility of moving VMs around and providing a VM but what about the actual applications (anything more than a very basic app)? The application administrator then still has to go and install and configure the OS for that application and install the application and its patches and basic configuration so that the application user then can go in. Building gold images for complex software stacks that are not owned by the users/admins is always very difficult. With our templates, we provide a number of things : Oracle Linux pre-installed and pre-configured with the minimum required packages for that application to run. (so it's secure) Oracle Linux can be distributed and used for free or with a support subscription. There is no trial license, there is no registration key, no alpha version or community version versus enterprise version. • Softpedia published some of my open source projects — how to react?

  (FYI: I've just moved this question over from Stackoverflow on recommendation.) I just received a few emails, informing me that softpedia.com has added some of my "products" to their "database of scripts, code snippets and web applications". My products are in this case some smaller open source projects, which I have hosted and published on github. Now I'm wondering how to react to this. This site is indirectly making money of my free work through ads on three pages before the actual download. They also seem to "invent" version numbers and I can't find out if they're hosting the latest or all versions of my projects. — I can see how this could lead to problems in the future, since I don't control what's "the latest" everywhere. On the other hand I don't mind some extra publicity. I want as many people as possible to know about the projects, use them, fork them and hopefully improve them. The projects in questions are really fairly small, but this might not be the case in the future for me and/or other people reading this question. I'm sure that this must have happened to others around here. What's your opinion? Should I try to get the downloads removed? Update 1 I've requested the removal and mentioned that I don't feel that Softpedia can provide the right environment for this kind of project. Their team got back to me instantly with a friendly email saying, that they'll remove the links for now: If you are worried that your projects won't be updated, then I must tell you that I have them bookmarked in my RSS reader, so any version changes will be forwarded to me when needed. So I promise I'll keep your script up to date as soon as I see an update in the repository. I have to say, that I appreciate this kind of reaction quite a lot and so I sent them another email, describing in more detail what I'm worried about and what bothers me. I also stated, that I'm aware that my license clearly permits them to host the projects in any case, but that I'd be even happy if they would host the projects as long as they could convince me of a few details and maybe make some small changes to the way the projects are represented. — Let's see where this goes. Update 2 After discussing with their contact and requesting some changes regarding display of version (they had given the possibility to do so) and authorship they put the projects back up on their site. All in all a positive and definitely interesting experience.

• Getting away from a customized Magento 1.4 installation - Magento 1.6, OpenCart, or others?

  I'm dealing with a Magento 1.4.0.0 Community Edition installation with various undocumented changes to the core (mostly integration with an ERP system), an outdated Sweet Tooth Points & Rewards module and some custom payment providers. It also doubles as a mediocre blogging/CMS system. It has one store each for 3 different languages, with about 40 product categories for a few hundred products. [rant] With no prior experience with any PHP e-commerce systems, I find it very difficult to work with. I attempted to install Magento 1.4.0.0 on my local WAMP dev machine, it installs fine, but the main page or search do not show any products no matter what I do in the backend admin panel. I don't know what's wrong with it, and whatever information I googled is either too old or too new from Magento 1.4. Later I'm given FTP access to the testing server, which neither my manager or I have permission to install XDebug on, as apparantly it runs on the same server as the production server (yikes). Trying to learn how Magento works is torture. I spent a week trying to add some fields into the Onepage Checkout before giving up and went to work on something else. The template system, just like the rest of Magento, is a bloated mishmash of overcomplicated directory structures, weird config xml files and EAV databases. I went into 6 different models and several content blocks in the backend just to change what the front page looks like. With little-to-none helpful and clear documentation (unlike CodeIgniter) and various breaking changes between minor point revisions which makes it hard to find useful information, Magento 1.4 is a developer killer. [/rant] The client is planning to redesign the site and has decided it might as well as move on from this unsustainable, hacky, upgrade-unfriendly, developer-unfriendly mess. Magento 1.4 is starting to show its age, with Magento 1.7 coming soon, the client is considering upgrading to Magento 1.6 or 1.7 if it has improved from 1.4. The customizations done to the current Magento 1.4 installation will have to be redone, and a new license for the Sweet Tooth Points & Rewards module will have to be bought. The client is also open to other e-commerce systems. I've looked at OpenCart and it seems to be quite developer friendly with a fairly simple structure. I found some complaints regarding its performance when the shop has thousands of categories or products, but this is not an issue with the current number of products my client has. It seems to be solid ground for easy customization to bring the rewards system and ERP integration over. What should the client upgrade to in this case?

• StreamInsight 1.0 Released

  One piece in the set of products offered in SQL Server 2008 R2 that has generated a lot of buzz and interest during its CTP phase is StreamInsight, Microsoft’s platform for Complex Event Processing. Microsoft’s information platform vision provides enterprises with a “complete approach” to managing information assets, enabling all businesses to gain strategic value from information from the desktop to the datacenter to the cloud. And StreamInsight V1 is one essential piece in this spectrum. After more than a year of blood, sweat, tears, and insane amounts of coffee we are proud to release the first version of our Complex Event Processing Framework.   Those of you who have been following our Community Technology Previews (CTPs) throughout last year have already had the possibility to familiarize themselves with the product. Early feedback was not only incredibly positive, but also very constructive and strongly influenced the final feature set. Four notable increments over our last public CTP are: Count windows Non-occurrence detection (Anti-Join) Dynamic query composition at runtime Synchronize time across input streams Additionally, many smaller issues and bugs were addressed. A few APIs slightly changed with respect to the November CTP, but porting your application to RTM should not require a lot of effort.   Here are the (english) bits - choosing the evaluation license during setup lets you already play with this version. • EBS 11i and 12.1 Support Timeline Changes

  Two important changes to the Oracle Lifetime Support policies for Oracle E-Business Suite were announced at OpenWorld last week.  These changes affect EBS Releases 11i and 12.1. The changes are detailed in this My Oracle Support document: E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 (Note 1495337.1) 1. Changes for EBS 11i Sustaining Support The first change is that  we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: New fixes for Severity 1 production issues United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates Payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014 Customers environments must have the minimum baseline patches (or above) for new Severity 1 production bug fixes as documented here: Patch Requirements for Extended Support of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (Note 883202.1) 2. Changes for EBS 12.1 Extended Support More time:  Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended by nineteen months through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support for E-Business Suite 12.1. Fees waived:  Uplift fees are waived for all years of Extended Support (June, 2014 – December. 2018) for customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract. During this period, customers will receive all of the components of Extended Support at no additional cost other than their fees for Software Update License & Support. Where can I learn more? There are two interlocking policies that affect the E-Business Suite:  Oracle's Lifetime Support policies for each EBS release (timelines which were updated by this announcement), and the Error Correction Support policies (which state the minimum baselines for new patches). • New TPerlRegEx Compatible with Delphi XE

  The new RegularExpressionsCore unit in Delphi XE is based on the PerlRegEx unit that I wrote many years ago. Since I donated full rights to a copy rather than full rights to the original, I can continue to make my version of TPerlRegEx available to people using older versions of Delphi. I did make a few changes to the code to modernize it a bit prior to donating a copy to Embarcadero. The latest TPerlRegEx includes those changes. This allows you to use the same regex-based code using the RegularExpressionsCore unit in Delphi XE, and the PerlRegEx unit in Delphi 2010 and earlier. If you’re writing new code using regular expressions in Delphi 2010 or earlier, I strongly recomment you use the new version of my PerlRegEx unit. If you later migrate your code to Delphi XE, all you have to do is replace PerlRegEx with RegularExrpessionsCore in the uses clause of your units. If you have code written using an older version of TPerlRegEx that you want to migrate to the latest TPerlRegEx, you’ll need to take a few changes into account. The original TPerlRegEx was developed when Borland’s goal was to have a component for everything on the component palette. So the old TPerlRegEx derives from TComponent, allowing you to put it on the component palette and drop it on a form. The new TPerlRegEx derives from TObject. It can only be instantiated at runtime. If you want to migrate from an older version of TPerlRegEx to the latest TPerlRegEx, start with removing any TPerlRegEx components you may have placed on forms or data modules and instantiate the objects at runtime instead. When instantiating at runtime, you no longer need to pass an owner component to the Create() constructor. Simply remove the parameter. Some of the property and method names in the original TPerlRegEx were a bit unwieldy. These have been renamed in the latest TPerlRegEx. Essentially, in all identifiers SubExpression was replaced with Group and MatchedExpression was replaced with Matched. • Northwind now available on SQL Azure

  Two weeks ago I made available a copy of [AdventureWorks2012] on SQL Azure and published credentials so that anyone from the SQL community could connect up and experience SQL Azure, probably for the first time. One of the (somewhat) popular requests thereafter was to make the venerable Northwind database available too so I am pleased to say that as of right now, Northwind is up there too. You will notice immediately that all of the Northwind tables (and the stored procedures and views too) have been moved into a schema called [Northwind] – this was so that they could be easily differentiated from the existing [AdventureWorks2012] objects. I used an SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) project to publish the schema and data up to this SQL Azure database; if you are at all interested in poking around that SSDT project then I have made it available on Codeplex for your convenience under the MS-PL license – go and get it from https://northwindssdt.codeplex.com/. Using SSDT proved particularly useful as it alerted me to some aspects of Northwind that were not compatible with SQL Azure, namely that five of the tables did not have clustered indexes: The beauty of using SSDT is that I am alerted to these issues before I even attempt a connection to SQL Azure. Pretty cool, no? Fixing this situation was of course very easy, I simply changed the following primary keys from being nonclustered to clustered: [PK_Region] [PK_CustomerDemographics] [PK_EmployeeTerritories] [PK_Territories] [PK_CustomerCustomerDemo]   If you want to connect up then here are the credentials that you will need: Server mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net Database AdventureWorks2012 User sqlfamily Password sqlf@m1ly You will need SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 2008R2 installed in order to connect or alternatively simply use this handy website: https://mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net which provides a web interface to a SQL Azure server. • NDepend 4.0 Released

  Last week version 4.0 of NDepend was released.  NDepend is a Visual Studio add-in designed for intense code analysis with the goal of high quality code.  A month ago I wrapped up my evaluation of the previous version of NDepend. The new version contains many minor changes, several bug fixes, and adds about 50 new code rules.  The version also adds support for Visual Studio 11, .NET Framework 4.5, and SilverLight 5.0.  But, the biggest change was the shift from CQL to CQLinq. Introducing CQLinq The latest version replaces the CQL rules language with CQLinq (CQL is still an option although the editor is buried).  As you might guess CQLinq is a flavor of Linq designed specifically for the code rules. The best way to illustrate the differences is with an example.  I used the following CQL example in Part 3 of my review: WARN IF Count > 0 IN SELECT TYPES WHERE IsInterface AND !NameLike “I” This same query looks like this when implemented in CQLinq: warnif count > 0 from t in Types where t.IsInterface == true && !t.NameLike(“I”) select t I like the syntax and it is a natural fit, but I found writing the queries frustrating in the Queries and Rules Edit window.  The Queries and Rules Edit window replaces the CQL Query Edit window.  The new editor has the same style of Intellisense as the previous editor.  However, it has a few annoyances.  The error indicator is a red block.  It has the tendency of obscuring your cursor.  Additionally, writing CQLing queries is like writing plain old Linq queries, so the fact that the editor uses Enter to select from Intellisense instead of Tab is jarring.  These issues can be an obstacle to writing queries quickly.CQLinq makes it possible to write rules that weren't possible before.  Additionally, a JustMyCode domain is now possible making it easy to eliminate generated code from the analysis.Should you Buy? I recommend NDepend overall.  It has some rough points for me that I have detailed in my earlier evaluation (starting here).  But, it’s definitely worth the money.  The bigger question is: should I pay for the upgrade to 4.0?  At this point I’m on the fence, but I would go for it if you need support for Visual Studio 2011, .NET Framework 4.5, or Silverlight 5.0; or if you need one of the many rules that weren't possible before CQLinq. • Impressions from VMworld - Clearing up Misconceptions

  Gorgeous sunny weather…none of the usual summer fog…the Oracle Virtualization team has been busy at VMworld in San Francisco this week. From the time exhibits opened on Sunday, our booth staff was fully engaged with visitors. It was great to meet with customers and prospects, and there were many…most with promises to meet again in October at Oracle OpenWorld 2012. Interests and questions ran the gamut - from implementation details to consolidating applications to how does Oracle VM enable rapid application deployment to Oracle support and licensing. All good stuff! Some inquiries are poignant and really help us get at the customer pain points. Some are just based on misconceptions. We’d like to address a couple of common misconceptions that we heard: 1) Rapid deployment of enterprise applications is great but I don’t do this all the time. So why bother? While production applications don’t get updated or upgraded as often, development and QA staging environments are much more dynamic. Also, in today’s Cloud based computing environments, end users expect an entire solution, along with the virtual machine, to be provisioned instantly, on-demand, as and when they need to scale. Whether it’s adding a new feature to meet customer demands or updating applications to meet business/service compliance, these environments undergo change frequently. The ability to rapidly stand up an entire application stack with all the components such as database tier, mid-tier, OS, and applications tightly integrated, can offer significant value. Hand patching, installation of the OS, application and configurations to ensure the entire stack works well together can take days and weeks. Oracle VM Templates provide a much faster path to standing up a development, QA or production stack in a matter of hours or minutes. I see lots of eyes light up as we get to this point of the conversation. 2) Oracle Software licensing on VMware vSphere In the world of multi-vendor IT stacks, understanding license boundaries and terms and conditions for each product in the stack can be challenging.  Oracle’s licensing, though, is straightforward.  Oracle software is licensed per physical processor in the server or cluster where the Oracle software is installed and/or running.  The use of third party virtualization technologies such as VMware is not allowed as a means to change the way Oracle software is licensed.  Exceptions are spelled out in the licensing document labeled “Hard Partitioning". Here are some fun pictures! Visitors to our booth told us they loved the Oracle SUV courtesy shuttles that are helping attendees get to/from hotels. • Best Language for the job? Database | C++, .NET, Java

  Ok, quick overview. I'm pretty brand new to software design. I have experience reading and editing/customizing PHP things for online scripts/software; Such as CMS, Wordpress, some forum solutions. I'm about to begin my degree in Software Design, the school I'm going to will allow us to kind of focus on an area, C++, Java, or .NET. I've played around a little with VB over the past week, mostly just trying to get a slight feel for it, however nothing extensive. I've been through Herbert Schildt's "C++, A Beginner's Guide." but I was mainly reading it, not doing anything with it beyond a couple basic Console Apps (and getting frustrated with auto-close :/ ). Now, where I decide to focus more in with my degree will depend on what the best language for the job is for my first piece of software I want to develop on my own. Assume I haven't looked at any of the languages at all, please help with the following: My first piece of software will be a database program. Everything has to do with users inputting and retrieving data, and calling that data to help with another function of the software, automatically calculating billing information based on information inputted in the other portion of the program. I won't go into too many details as I'm targeting a niche that doesn't have too much competition, but the competition that is there is established. I want to offer more features, scalable solutions, and the ability to port it to an online version. Ok, basically, it is a complete case management with integrated billing for Private Investigators. I would like the case management to be able to check the Database to see if certain information has been inputted before (such as Names/SSN's), and then the billing will pull hours inputted in the case portion for investigative work, multiplying by an already inputted amount for the fee, and then calculate sales tax. I also want to provide potential clients with an easily scalable solution, that is, a basic option for start ups that costs the least amount, with no additional users, ran on one machine. A middle option with the ability to create users and place them in two groups (User or Admin), as well as adding a few additional features, ran on one machine, but this will allow it to be accessed after being mapped on a network drive. And a third option to allow the placement into 4 different groups (Investigators, Billing, Managers, Admins) and more features. And then, a couple of years after launch, a 4th option that is browser based allowing the same 4 groups to login, as well as clients (view things concerning their case, with some admin customizable objects that can be added for clients view), over the internet. The only licensing security I would like to employ right off the bat will be serial key generated after ordering online (received in an email after the successful purchase). The program will access a database stored on a server periodically to verify license. I would like it to be able to check to make sure it's the most updated version and automatically update if not.

• Blender to 3ds max to cal3d format

  There are quite a few questions on cal3d but they are old and don't apply anymore. In Blender(must be 2.49a for python script to work!!!): I have a scene with 7 meshes, 1 armature, 10 bones. I tried going to one mesh to simplify it but doesn't change anything. I found a small blend file that was used for cal3d and it exported just fine. So I tried to copy it's setup with no success. EDIT*8/13/2012 In the last week here is what I have found so far. I made the mesh in the newest blender(2.62?) and exported it to import it in the old one(2.49a). Did an animation in the old one because importing new blend files to old blenders, its just said it would lose keyframe data and all was good. And then you get the last problem of it not exporting meshes. BUT I found that meshes made in the old one export regardless. I can't find any that won't export. So if I used the old blender to remake my model I could get it to export :) At this point I found a modified release of cal3d (because the most core model variable would not initiate as I made a really small test subject in old blender instead of remaking my big one which took 4 hours.) which fixes the morph objects and adds what cal3d left off with. Under their license they have to release the modification but it has no documentation so I have to figure it out on my own. Its mostly the same. But with this lib it came with a 3ds max exporter. My question now is how do I transfer armature and mesh information from blender to 3ds max in order to export into cal3d format. Every time I try the models are see through and small and there are no bones. The formats I have tried to import are .3ds .obj(mesh only) and COLLADA. In all of them the mesh is invisible and no bones. It says the default texture is on so I should be able to see it. All the vertices are present I found a vertex highlighter so I can see those. If any of this is confusing let me know so I can clear it up. Its late .<=sleep.

• Wireframing: A Day In the Life of UX Workshop at Oracle

  The Oracle Applications User Experience team's Day in the Life (DITL) of User Experience (UX) event was run in Oracle's Redwood Shores HQ for Oracle Usability Advisory Board (OUAB) members. I was charged with putting together a wireframing session, together with Director of Financial Applications User Experience, Scott Robinson (@scottrobinson). Example of stunning new wireframing visuals we used on the DITL events. We put on a lively show, explaining the basics of wireframing, the concepts, what it is and isn't, considerations on wireframing tool choice, and then imparting some tips and best practices. But the real energy came when the OUAB customers and partners in the room were challenge to do some wireframing of their own. Wireframing is about bringing your business and product use cases to life in real UX visual terms, by creating a low-fidelity drawing to iterate and agree on in advance of prototyping and coding what is to be finally built and rolled out for users. All the best people wireframe. Leonardo da Vinci used "cartoons" on some great works, tracing outlines first and using red ochre or charcoal dropped through holes in the tracing parchment onto the canvas to outline the subject. (Image distributed under Wikimedia commons license) Wireframing an application's user experience design enables you to: Obtain stakeholder buy-in. Enable faster iteration of different designs. Determine the task flow navigation paths (in Oracle Fusion Applications navigation is linked with user roles). Develop a content strategy (readability, search engine optimization (SEO) of content, and so on) Lay out the pages, widgets, groups of features, and so on. Apply usability heuristics early (no replacement for usability testing, but a great way to do some heavy-lifting up front). Decide upstream which functional user experience design patterns to apply (out of the box solutions that expedite productivity). Assess which Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) or equivalent technology components can be used (again, developer productivity is enhanced downstream). We ran a lively hands-on exercise where teams wireframed a choice of application scenarios using the time-honored tools of pen and paper. Scott worked the floor like a pro, pointing out great use of features, best practices, innovations, and making sure that the whole concept of wireframing, the gestalt, transferred. "We need more buttons!" The cry of the energized. Not quite. The winning wireframe session (online shopping scenario) from the Applications UX DITL event shown. Great fun, great energy, and great teamwork were evident in the room. Naturally, there were prizes for the best wireframe. Well, actually, prizes were handed out to the other attendees too! An exciting, slightly different aspect to delivery of this session made the wireframing event one of the highlights of the day. And definitely, something we will repeat again when we get the chance.   A current draft of the "National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace" has been posted by the Department of Homeland Security. This question is not asking about privacy or constitutionality, but about how this act will impact developers' business models and development strategies. When the post was made I was reminded of Jeff's November blog post regarding an internet driver's license. Whether that is a perfect model or not, both approaches are attempting to handle a shared problem (of both developers and end users): How do we establish an online identity? The question I ask here is, with respect to the various burdens that would be imposed on developers and users, what are some of the major, foreseeable implementation issues that will arise from the current U.S. Government's proposed solution? For a quick primer on the setup, jump to page 12 for infrastructure components, here are two stand-outs: An Identity Provider (IDP) is responsible for the processes associated with enrolling a subject, and establishing and maintaining the digital identity associated with an individual or NPE. These processes include identity vetting and proofing, as well as revocation, suspension, and recovery of the digital identity. The IDP is responsible for issuing a credential, the information object or device used during a transaction to provide evidence of the subject’s identity; it may also provide linkage to authority, roles, rights, privileges, and other attributes. The credential can be stored on an identity medium, which is a device or object (physical or virtual) used for storing one or more credentials, claims, or attributes related to a subject. Identity media are widely available in many formats, such as smart cards, security chips embedded in PCs, cell phones, software based certificates, and USB devices. Selection of the appropriate credential is implementation specific and dependent on the risk tolerance of the participating entities. • Setting up Ubuntu on my mother's computer

  Intended use My mother had an old Compaq desktop computer running Windows 98, which she used for occasional Web browsing and playing cards. The name of her card game is Hoyle Card Games 3. Although I had to repair it several times over the last 10 years, it worked fine until it finally died at the end of last year. Hardware specifications A relative brought up a newer computer soon afterward: Operating system: Windows XP Asus K8N motherboard (with broken on-board sound; getting a sound card) Athlon 64? processor (don't remember the clock speed) 512 MB RAM Hope the graphics card works... Replacement sound card will be one of: Ensoniq ES1370 AudioPCI Diamond Monster Sound MX300 (Aureal chipset) Sound Blaster Audigy 2 SE Peripherals HP Scanjet 3400c scanner (USB connected) HP LaserJet multi-function printer (parallel port connected, and printing works with a PCL driver) Same serial mouse as old computer Question I had set up an SSH/VNC connection to allow for remotely working out problems. Or so I thought. A month later, the computer would not boot, rendering the SSH connection useless and an OS reinstall necessary. Unfortunately, I have neither the original Windows disc nor the product key. Unless I were to pay $200 for a full Windows 7 Home Premium license for my computer, I would not be able to re-install Windows XP on hers. I consider myself an advanced Linux user, having used Debian for years. So here are my questions. I have only one day to decide whether to use Ubuntu or buy Windows: A quick search leads me to believe all the hardware listed above is supposed to work with Linux, but am I mistaken? Would Ubuntu/Xubuntu suffice (specify which one if it matters), or would I be better off paying the $200 necessary for Windows XP? Is the card game likely to run on Wine? I believe the minimum system requirement is Windows 95. Failing Wine compatibility, will VirtualBox run fast enough on such a computer (Windows 98 as the guest OS)? Are there any free card games just as good? She plays mainly Bridge, Poker, and Solitaire. Is there any "Large Fonts" option for those with poor vision? The lack of it would be a big disadvantage. BONUS: Although I would probably replace the old mouse upon a move to Ubuntu, is it even possible to get a serial mouse working?

• Why Java's JMF doesn't work in Linux?

  I got to do some image processing program in java using Linux. I chose to use the JMF for my camera (a webcam) access. But my program is not able to access the camera. But, the jmf works well in Windows. I downloaded jmf from oracle.com and I tried to install it in 'Ubuntu 10.10-the Maverick-released in October 2010 and supported until April 2012'. The downloaded file was a .bin file. I got the below output (last part of the output) when I tried the command provided by oracle /bin/sh ./jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin. • SSMS Tools Pack 3.0 is out. Full SSMS 2014 support and improved features.

  With version 3.0 the SSMS 2014 is fully supported. Since this is a new major version you'll eventually need a new license. Please check the EULA to see when. As a thank you for your patience with this release, everyone that bought the SSMS Tools Pack after April 1st, the release date of SQL Server 2014, will receive a free upgrade. You won't have to do anything for this to take effect. First thing you'll notice is that the UI has been completely changed. It's more in line with SSMS and looks less web-like. Also the core has been updated and rewritten in some places to be better suited for future features. Major improvements for this release are: Window Connection Coloring Something a lot of people have asked me over the last 2 years is if there's a way to color the tab of the window itself. I'm very glad to say that now it is. In SSMS 2012 and higher the actual query window tab is also colored at the top border with the same color as the already existing strip making it much easier to see to which server your query window is connected to even when a window is not focused. To make it even better, you can not also specify the desired color based on the database name and not just the server name. This makes is useful for production environments where you need to be careful in which database you run your queries in. Format SQL The format SQL core was rewritten so it'll be easier to improve it in future versions. New improvement is the ability to terminate SQL statements with semicolons. This is available only in SSMS 2012 and up. Execution Plan Analyzer A big request was to implement the Problems and Solutions tooltip as a window that you can copy the text from. This is now available. You can move the window around and copy text from it. It's a small improvement but better stuff will come. SQL History Current Window History has been improved with faster search and now also shows the color of the server/database it was ran against. This is very helpful if you change your connection in the same query window making it clear which server/database you ran query on. The option to Force Save the history has been added. This is a menu item that flushes the execution and tab content history save buffers to disk. SQL Snippets Added an option to generate snippet from selected SQL text on right click menu. Run script on multiple databases Configurable database groups that you can save and reuse were added. You can create groups of preselected databases to choose from for each server. This makes repetitive tasks much easier New small team licensing option A lot of requests came in for 1 computer, Unlimited VMs option so now it's here. Hope it serves you well.

• Usage of Pirated software at a company

  Hi, I am redirected from stack over flow since the topic is ethics rather than about programming. Thank you for letting me know that. and please give me advices. So, I started to work at a company as an engineer a couple of months ago. It's a small company and what they basically do is answering service on phones. Now they are switching from normal phones to IP phones so that computers take more important place in the work. However, all the computers used by workers are equipped with pirated software ,even their operating systems are. Moreover, they don't even buy one license to make copies for other computers. In other words, they do not spend any money for the software in office. I am not saying copying a licensed one is legit, but the situation is too much. There is one guy who did installing those pirated soft. He does not feel any sense of guilt and even justified when I asked about it. and he is not even a specialist. He just searched on the internet to install pirated software. Our boss does not have any knowledge of computers, so he took cheaper way. How do you guys think about this? Since I am still new to the company, I am not doing maintenance or managing on those cracked computers. But I have to use those software daily. And later on I will be doing support, help desk kind of staff. I really don't want to take responsibility for operating pirated software. and from an aspect of developer and engineer, pirated software are not able to get legal support and it may work unexpectedly. So, I am thinking about changing job. Am I thinking too much? should I wait until I have more credit from the boss and try to change his policy? So far, the boss does not take any words from me. • Windows Server 2003 Trial Activation Issue

  I have a Windows Server 2003 (R2 Enterprise with SP2) VM, originally installed with a trial license. We forgot about the server, and now more than 120 days has passed, and I can't do anything with the server. I seem to be at a dead end with the existing installation. When I log in, I get: The evaluation period for this copy of Windows has ended. Windows cannot start. To continue using Windows, please purchase and install a retail copy of the product. Fine. I'll do that with my MSDN media. I should add that safe mode works, but there isn't anything obvious that I found to help me there Next up, I tried repairing my installation: Boot from Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP2 media, tell it I want to install (as opposed to recovery console), then let it repair the existing install. Once that completes and reboots I log in: This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can continue. You cannot log on until you activate Windows. Do you want to activate Windows now? To shut down the computer, click Cancel. Great! I click "Yes" and am left with a big blue screen. Not a blue screen of death, just a blue screen (i.e. the default windows desktop background color). No Ctrl+Alt+Del. All I can do is power cycle. I have some complex third-party software on there that I can't reinstall, which is why I haven't already built a fresh Windows VM and copied everything over. I have a backup of the VM from after trial period expired but before I installed anything. Ideas?

Server has NLA & temporary use of port 3389 (which is directly connected to and accessible from the internet (I am planning to change the port to 443, but want to get the current system running first). • XP Client(s): RDP-Version on win xp clients is 6.1 If had SP2, then added SP3 and edited the registry settings to allow NLA, by: Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa In the details pane, right-click Security Packages, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type tspkg. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders, and then click Modify.
