• Django ORM and PostgreSQL connection limits

  I'm running a Django project on Postgresql 8.1.21 (using Django 1.1.1, Python2.5, psycopg2, Apache2 with mod_wsgi 3.2). We've recently encountered this lovely error: OperationalError: FATAL: connection limit exceeded for non-superusers I'm not the first person to run up against this. There's a lot of discussion about this error, specifically with psycopg, but much of it centers on older versions of Django and/or offer solutions involving edits to code in Django itself. I've yet to find a succinct explanation of how to solve the problem of the Django ORM (or psycopg, whichever is really responsible, in this case) leaving open Postgre connections. Will simply adding connection.close() at the end of every view solve this problem? Better yet, has anyone conclusively solved this problem and kicked this error's ass?

• Basic refactoring features (e.g., Rename) unavailable when editing code in an aspx/ascx files

  I was just editing some C# code between <% %> tags in an .ascx file, and I noticed that the Refactor contextual menu is unavailable. And even if I manually add items from this menu to a custom toolbar, they are disabled when viewing aspx/ascx files. I usually only have small snippets of C# code in my aspx/ascx files, but it would still be nice to be able to perform refactoring operations on any code that exists between <% %> tags. I feel like I'm going back to the dark ages when I have to use find/replace to change the name of a variable. Questions Is there a way to enable Visual Studio's refactoring features while viewing aspx/ascx files in Visual Studio? Are there any Visual Studio plug-ins (preferably free) that offer this kind of functionality?

• SQLite as an App Queue, Exclusive Row Lock?

  I am considering using SQLite as a "job queue container", and was wondering how I could do so, using custom C# (with ADO.NET) to work the database. If this was SQL Server, I would setup a serializable transaction to make sure the parent row and child rows were exclusively mine until I was done. I'm not sure how that would work in SQLite, can anyone offer any assistance? Or if there are any other existing implementations of message queueing with SQLite, I'd appreciate any pointers in that direction as well. Thanks!

• Portable C++ library for IPC (processes and shared memory), Boost vs ACE vs Poco?

  Hi, I need a portable C++ library for doing IPC. I used fork() and SysV shared memory until now but this limits me to Linux/Unix. I found out that there are 3 major C++ libraries that offer a portable solution (including Windows and Mac OS X). I really like Boost, and would like to use it but I need processes and it seems like that this is only an experimental branch until now!? I have never heard of ACE or POCO before and thus I am stuck I do not know which one to choose. I need fork(), sleep() (usleep() would be great) and shared memory of course. Performance and documentation are also important criteria. Thanks, for your Help!

• C# streamreader, delimiter problem.

  What I have is a txt file that is huge, 60MB. I need to read each line and produce a file, split based on a delimiter. I'm having no issue reading the file or producing the file, my complication comes from the delimiter, it can't see the delimiter.   Hello, I need (free or cheap) source for end of day stock/mutual funds/index values. Major world indexes & European stocks are primary intrest. I keep seeing that yahoo/ google/ MS offer this data, yet I cant find HOWTO doc (or similar) on getting the data. Reuters is an option - ~$300/month puts it out of my range. • What can I use for voluntary donations? (like Tipjoy)

  There used to be a site called Tipjoy that would let me put a small "donate" button on a webpage, and users could donate small amounts (like 25c) to me easily. I think it was a pretty neat idea, since I want to have a way for people to give me money, and I don't like advertisements, and I don't update regularly enough to sell subscriptions like bloggers. I just have some simple web services and open-source program and I want an easy way for people to drop me some change if they think they're useful. I've found out that Amazon used to have a similar service, but it's also been shut down. Is there any similar web service available today? If not, what's the closest thing to offer -- a Paypal link?

• Edit Distance in Python

  I'm programming a spellcheck program in Python. I have a list of valid words (the dictionary) and I need to output a list of words from this dictionary that have an edit distance of 2 from a given invalid word. I know I need to start by generating a list with an edit distance of one from the invalid word(and then run that again on all the generated words). I have three methods, inserts(...), deletions(...) and changes(...) that should output a list of words with an edit distance of 1, where inserts outputs all valid words with one more letter than the given word, deletions outputs all valid words with one less letter, and changes outputs all valid words with one different letter. I've checked a bunch of places but I can't seem to find an algorithm that describes this process. All the ideas I've come up with involve looping through the dictionary list multiple times, which would be extremely time consuming. If anyone could offer some insight, I'd be extremely grateful.   Hi all, I want to be able to access properties from a json string within my java action method. The string is available by simply saying myJsonString = object.getJson(); Below is an example of what the string can look like: {'title': 'Computing and Information systems','id':1,'children': 'true','groups': [{'title': 'Level one CIS','id':2,'children': 'true','groups':[{'title': 'Intro To Computing and Internet','id':3,'children': 'false','groups':[]}]}]} In this string every json object contains an array of other json objects. The intention is to extract a list of id's where any given object possessing a group property that contains other json objects. I looked at google's Gson as a potential json plugin.   I am trying to insert a user control dynamically into my default.aspx page via the following method in the page_init: Dim control As UserControl = LoadControl("~\Modules\Content.ascx") Controls.Add(control) When I run the page there is no sign of the usercontrol. Am I using the correct code to insert the usercontrol? Is there an alternative method of insertion available? Does the fact that the usercontrol has a page_load make a difference? Do I need to register the control in my aspx page at design time? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

  I have two models (entries and messages) using acts-as-taggable-on for tagging. How do I write a find condition for tagged messages from only the one model and not both? The only way I can get the tagged items to display is through the basic find: @tags = Tag.find(:all) But this displays tags from both the entries model and the messages model. How can I find the tags from just the messages model? I'm really new to Rails and ActiveRecord finds. I appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you for reading my question.

  Just any old GSM compatible SIM card (bonus for 3G USIM). I presume I need some hardware? Can anyone recommend something cheap for hobbyist, and something more professional? I presume that there will be full docs of an API with the h/w, so maybe this should be tagged "no-programming-related"? Sorry, if so. Any good URLs or books (I am conversant with the 3GPP standards). I'm not (black hat) hacking, don't worry, just not pleased with the likes of SIM Card Secretary, Data Doctor Recovery, etc, so would like to code my own, but might turn it commercial, or offer SIM card programming services (data recover from damaged card, etc) as a sideline.

  My application will offer a list of suggestions for English names that "sound like" a given typed name. The query will need to be optimized and return results as quick as possible. Which option would be most optimal for returning results quickly. (Or your own suggestion if you have one) A. Generate the Soundex Hash and store it in the "Names" table then do something like the following: (This saves generating the soundex hash for at least every row in my db per query right?) select name from names where NameSoundex = Soundex('Ann') B. Use the Difference function (This must generate the soundex for every name in the table?) select name from names where Difference(name, 'Ann') = 3 C. Simple comparison select name from names where Soundex(name) = Soundex('Ann') Option A seems like to me it would be the fastest to return results because it only generates the Soundex for one string then compares to an indexed column "NameSoundex" Option B should give more results than option A because the name does not have to be an exact match of the soundex, but could be slower Assuming my table could contain millions of rows, what would yield the best results?

I can also write wrapper functions in Javascript for each method, but there should be a simpler way to do this automatically for all the public methods of a class.

• Help with Sharepoint (WSS 3.0) and JQuery

  Ok so the scenario is as follows: Have a sharepoint site setup on Microsoft Online, basically this site is a job booking system and is based on a custom sharepoint list. What I am trying to achieve is to extract List Items where the Invoiced Column is set to "No". Eventually I would like to post this to xero.com using their API as it accepts XML through the API Endpoints. Have tried using JQuery and JPoint but my limited programming skills are holding me back. Could anyone offer me some advice or point me in the right direction of someone that could help? am willing to pay someone if they can help me with getting this to work :)

What I'd like to do is offer an address book in my web application and have a button that says "Upload your contacts from X". The user could then click a few buttons and his contacts would be automagically uploaded from X. A company called Plaxo has a widget that does exactly what I am looking for, BUT: They only support a limited number of data sources (I am most interested in ACT, Salesforce, Outlook, and QuickBooks), and They only support e-mail addresses. • MX Records - go to two servers?

  Right now I have a single mail server for IMAP. Let's say I want to introduce Exchange but not all users will be on it. Some users will be on my "legacy" IMAP, others on the "new" Exchange. Is it possible to "split up" your users (from the same e-mail domain) on two services like this? What would the MX records look like? My guess is that this isn't possible, but thought I'd ask. By the way, I realize that Exchange can offer IMAP and all that, but my question is more about splitting users across services and the MX records. The actual protocols above are only examples.

  Dear all, I have read the Blackberry documentation and it is possible to push a notification from a webapp. I am planning to create a Blackberry application that compliments to our webapps. But I am still left in the middle whether to develop a webapp or native Blackberry app. I have also look at how a webapp runs on Blackberry browser and it looks smooth. From your experience does the native app offer something that the webapp doesn't? Bonus question, is Facebook and Twitter app on Blackberry a native app or a webapp?   Hi all, Is there a vetted Windows-friendly, or even .NET-native, load-distributing/load-balancing utility out there along the lines of HA Proxy? We have a .NET stack product, and the one piece that we step out of the stack is for load-balancing. We need something with configurable rules for distribution -- perhaps subdomain-driven -- that NLB alone doesn't seem to offer. If it integrates directly with .NET, or offers an exposed API callable by webservices, so much the better! Thanks in advance! Clarification: we need to logically part over boxes. This is not just a cluster/failover/replication scenario.

• CakePHP: Why does adding 'Security' component break my app?

  I have a strange problem -- of my own making -- that's cropped up, and is driving me crazy. At some point, I inadvertently destroyed a file in the app/tmp directory...I'm not sure which file. But now my app breaks when I include the "Security" component, and works just fine when it's not included. I'm thinking it might be related to the Security.salt value somehow, or possibly to the saved session info, but I don't really have a deep enough knowledge of CakePHP to figure it out. Can anyone offer any insight here?

  An app (C#4, WinForms, Entity Framework, SQL Server 2008) of mine maintains a graph of interconnected objects, each having some simple member fields and a set of many directed (in and out) one-to-one links to other objects. I'd like to offer a user an ability to view and edit this graph visually some way, creating and removing connections, modifying objects attributes values and introducing/dropping objects. I suppose there has to be a framework (at list a primitive kind of) for this as visual model design tools are pretty common to meet. Do you know one?

  I'm thinking of writing an app to selectively transfer photos/music to and from my iPhone, mostly for fun and personal convenience. However, I'm stuck at the very beginning -- where do I look to find information on how to do this? Pretty much every link I see talks about developing applications that run on the iPhone, but nothing about desktop app for interfacing with an iPhone. I'm on Windows (no access to a Mac, but I'll take suggestions for that for when I eventually acquire one), and I'm most familiar with C#, but other languages are definitely an option.   Hi, I need to transmit the image from the mobile phone to the server. I am able to reduce the image screen size but not the memory size. I understand i have to deal with the color depth. J2ME does not seem to offer any scaling method which is available in J2SE: image rescaled = image.getScaledInstance(thumbWidth, thumbHeight, Image.SCALE_AREA_AVERAGING); BufferedImage biRescaled = toBufferedImage(rescaled, thumbWidth, thumbHeight, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB); How i would i tackle this ? I would like to reduce the image memory size before i transmit to the server. Thank you
