• Why people don't use LabView for purposes other than data acquisition and virtualization?

  This is marked as a subjective question, I hope I won't get too many down votes though. LV seems to offer a nice graphic alternative to traditional text based programming. As I understand, it's not a just-virtualization/data acquisition programming language. Nonetheless, it seems to have that paradigm pegged to its creator's name. My question comes up because it doesn't seem to be widely used for multi-purpose applications. I'm not a LV-expert of any kind, I'm more like a learner. I'm still getting used to LV.

  Can i user jquery to show / hide a specific div on another page? i.e. i have Content.aspx that shows content for different plans we offer. on detail.asp i have a more detailed page that hase unique divs. <div id="detail-a"> detailed content here for product A. </div> <div id="detail-b"> detailed content here for product B. </div> i dont want the show hide box to scroll to show the rest of the page detailed content... if that all makes sense...

• What features of interpreted languages can a compiled one not have?

  Interpreted languages are usually more high-level and therefore have features as dynamic typing (including creating new variables dynamically without declaration), the infamous eval and many many other features that make a programmer's life easier - but why can't compiled languages have these as well? I don't mean languages like Java that run on a VM, but those that compile to binary like C(++). I'm not going to make a list now but if you are going to ask which features I mean, please look into what PHP, Python, Ruby etc. have to offer. Which common features of interpreted languages can't/don't/do exist in compiled languages? Why?

• why is internet explorer displaying my javascript pagination backwards?

  Here's a version of the code I'm using, stripped down to just the parts that aren't working. This is all written to generate some basic pagination with jQuery. In Chrome/Safari/Moz, I generate see spans, 1,2,3,4,...,etc When I look in IE7/8, I see etc,...,4,3,2,1 The string seems to be concatenating backwards!! This seems very strange to me, because there's not a whole lot going on in the code here, I can't figure out which bit could be causing problems. • Using read() directly into a C++ std:vector

  I'm wrapping up user space linux socket functionality in some C++ for an embedded system (yes, this is probably reinventing the wheel again). I want to offer a read and write implementation using a vector. Doing the write is pretty easy, I can just pass &myvec[0] and avoid unnecessary copying. I'd like to do the same and read directly into a vector, rather than reading into a char buffer then copying all that into a newly created vector. Now, I know how much data I want to read, and I can allocate appropriately (vec.reserve). I can also read into &myvec[0], though this is probably a VERY BAD IDEA. Obviously doing this doesn't allow myvec.size to return anything sensible. Is there any way of doing this that 1) Doesn't completely feel yucky from a safety/C++ perspective and 2) Doesn't involve two copies of the data block - once from kernel to user space and once from a C char * style buffer into a C++ vector. Any thoughts collective?

• Do I need to sanitize the callback parameter from a JSONP call?

  I would like to offer a webservice via JSONP and was wondering, if I need to sanitize the value from the callback parameter. My current server side script looks like this currently (More or less. Code is in PHP, but could be anything really.): header("Content-type: application/javascript"); echo $_GET['callback'] . '(' . json_encode($data) . ')'; This is a classic XSS-vulnerability. If I need to sanitize it, then how? I was unable to find enough information about what might be allowed callback strings.

  I want to make nice and clean api; I'm making site and I want to offer the ability to mobile apps use web API of my site. I don't want to use oAuth, becouse the mobile and embedded applications that are facing the biggest hurdle, as they may not be able to bring up and/or control the web browser. Also its a little complicate. I know, that HTTP basic authorisation is not safe, but it's so simple... I want to use it in my api. I have somee users logins and their passwords (md5-encoded) in mysql base, but how to use those data in this HTTP basic authorisation?

• wanting to move up from ms access, thinking .net? visual studio?

  So I wrote a project-management program for a small business using Microsoft Access 2007. Now they've requested lots of additional features (timekeeping, privileged data tiers ...) I personally use Linux, but the whole office uses Windows. I'm relatively new to programming but like to teach myself using projects like this. I'm right on the edge on this -- I can't really tell what the path of least resistance here is: do I stay in access + VBA and teach myself a dying, annoying language -- while struggling against all the limitations of Access? Or do I move to something else? Python seems simple enough ... Whatever I use, i need to be able to offer a GUI.

• How to redefine symbol names in objects with RVCT?

  I currently develop a small OS for an embedded platform based on a ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. The OS provides an API for customer application development. The OS kernel and the API is compiled into a static lib by the ARMCC compiler and customer can link his application against it. The lib and the containing object files offer the complete list of symbols used in kernel. To "protect" the kernel and its inner states from extern hooking into obvious variables and functions, I would like to do some easy obfuscation by renaming the symbols randomly. The GNU binutils seems to do this by calling objcopy with the --redefine-sym flag. The GNU binutils cannot read the ARMCC / RVCT objects. Is there any solution to do this kind of obfuscation with RVCT?

As part of TA training, I'll be doing something called Microteaching, which is where I teach for 5-7 minutes in front of a small audience (4-5 people) and I am reviewed on my teaching style. Among being critiqued on my personal things like confidence and eye contact, I will be critiqued on how well I know the subject material, as well as how interesting it is to the audience.   I realise there are EL and near EL frameworks like StringTemplate, JUEL, Velocity, etc. However, I am not asking for list of alternatives to JSTL/EL. I came across a package more than a year ago, someone who wrote a util that emulates the functionality of JSP for non-servlet env, i.e., JSP composition which does not need a "servlet container" to function. I ignored it and now I think it would be helpful to me and I need help to recall what it is. My actual motivation is similar to what StringTemplate, JUEL, Velocity would offer to help me compose SQL blocks, HTML blocks but I am thinking that JSPs are precompiled into bytecode and JSPs are more run-time efficient since run-time parsing is done no more than once. So actually, recommendation for alternatives would be acceptable as long as the templates are precompiled into bytecode. But I still prefer the JSP emulator.

• C#, WinForms: What would prevent KeyDown events from chaining up from focused control up to main For

  As i understand it, when a keyboard button is pressed it should invoke the KeyDown event for the control which has focus. Then, the KeyDown for the parent control, so on and so forth until it reaches main form. UNLESS - along the chain one of the EventHandlers did: e.SuppressKeyPress = true; e.Handled = true; In my case, KeyDown events never get to the main form. I have Form - Panel - button for example. Panel doesn't offer a KeyDown Event, but it shouldn't stop it from reaching the main form right? Right now as a work around I set every single control to call an event handler I wrote. I'm basically trying to prevent Alt-F4 from closing the application and instead minimize it.

• Generic function to handle DataType Conversion

  I have the following function in C#, that I want to pass a MySQL DataReader value/object. If the value of the object passed is a DBNull I need to handle it and return a Null value of that data type e.g null int. Otherwise I want to convert the returned value like Convert.ToInt32(value) or similar. public static T ConvertFromDB<T>(object value) { return value == DBNull.Value ? default(T) : (T)value; } Can anyone offer any help on this ?

• Error loading SQL_VARIANT data type using Python

  I am using Python and SQLAlchemy to query a database that I did not create. I have run into a problem querying a table that contains the SQL_VARIANT data type. I get the error: sqlalchemy.exc.DBAPIError: (Error) ('ODBC data type -150 is not supported. Cannot read column Value.', 'HY000') I confirmed with the database creator that the "Value" column is of type SQL_VARIANT. Does anyone know a way to load this data type using Python? I am currently using mssql with pyodbc. Thank you for any help you can offer! Versions: Python 2.7, SQLAlchemy 0.7.8

• Creating standalone, console (shell) for domain-specific operations

  Say that I have a system service, and I want to offer a low-level maintenance access to it. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

• Looking for Team Development type Software like SVN

  I am in need of a software that is PHP-Based, or similar that can be installed on my server that doesn't offer SVN Perks. It should be somewhat similar to an SVN, however, since the server doesn't support SVN, we'll need another means of doing sort of the same thing. We have a team of Developers and need to accomplish progress in the same way that an SVN does, but without that type of server support. Is there any software that could be installed via webhosting that would be somewhat, if not exactly, similar to an SVN? • How to programatically set cell.textLabel.text from a different view?

  I've got a view controller, call it VC1, that's a table view. When I tap a cell in the table view, I am presented with a new view controller, call it VC2, which is a short list of choices. After making a choice, I want to dismiss VC2 and set the cell.textLabel.text property of the VC1 cell I originally tapped to the value I selected in VC2. Conceptually speaking, what is the proper way to do this? I've tried a handful of different approaches, but all of them seem wonky at best, and only one of them actually worked - although it was the most cumbersome of all, passing references to both view controllers and table view cells and all kinds of things. It just feels like I'm making a mountain out of what is probably a mole hill. This is such a common paradigm that I find it hard to believe there's not a simple method for doing it. Thanks in advance for any input you can offer.

• Generating PDF's via Delayed Job while maintaing a RESTful pattern.

  Hi, currently I am running a Rails app on Heroku, and everything is working great with exception of generating PDF documents that sometimes contain thousands of records. Heroku has a built-in timeout of 30 seconds, so if the request takes more than 30 seconds, it's abandoned. That's fine, since they offer delayed_job support built-in. However, all of the PDF's i generate follow a typical restful pattern. For instance, a request to "/posts.pdf" generates a pdf (using PRAWN and PRAWNTO) and it's delivered to the browser. So my basic question is, how do I create dynamically generated PDF's with delayed_job while maintaining the basic RESTful patterns Rail's so conveniently provides. Thanks.

• navigation framework in silverlight 3 skipping constructor when usercontrol is of a derived type

  Hi: I am using the NavigationFramework in Silverlight 3, and am running into issues where the constructor of the UserControl in the xaml I am loading is not being called, and I believe this is because the UserControl in the xaml I am calling is actually derived from another user control. I have stepped through the debugger with specific break points and the constructor is being ignored completey. I have MyWindowBlue which is of type uctrlBaseMyWindow. The constructor for uctrlBaseMyWindow is being called when the xaml is 'navigated to' but the constructor for MyWindowBlue is being ignored. This is not the case if I add the user control via markup directly. Anyone else have this issue? The code I am using to navigate to the MyWindowBlue is this.MyContentFrame.Navigate(new Uri("/Controls/uctrlMyWindowBlue.xaml", UriKind.Relative)); Has anyone run into this or could offer any help? • What is the Simplest Possible Payment Gateway to Implement? (using Django)

  I'm developing a web application that will require users to either make one time deposits of money into their account, or allow users to sign up for recurring billing each month for a certain amount of money. I've been looking at various payment gateways, but most (if not all) of them seem complex and difficult to get working. I also see no real active Django projects which offer simple views for making payments. Ideally, I'd like to use something like Amazon FPS, so that I can see online transaction logs, refund money, etc., but I'm open to other things. I just want the EASIEST possible payment gateway to integrate with my site. I'm not looking for anything fancy, whatever does the job, and requires < 10 hours to get working from start to finish would be perfect. I'll give answer points to whoever can point out a good one. • How can one manage to fully use the newly enhanced Parallelism features in .NET 4.0?

  I am pretty much interested into using the newly enhanced Parallelism features in .NET 4.0. I have also seen some possibilities of using it in F#, as much as in C#. Despite, I can only see what PLINQ has to offer with, for example, the following: var query = from c in Customers.AsParallel() where (c.Name.Contains("customerNameLike") select c; There must for sure be some other use of this parallelism thing. Have you any other examples of using it? Is this particularly turned toward PLINQ, or are there other usage as easy as PLINQ? Thanks! =)

• How to make/monitor/deploy daemon processes in JRuby

  I'm currently porting a Rails App currently using REE to JRuby so I can offer an easy-to-install JRuby alternative. I've bundled the app into a WAR file using Bundler which I'm currently deploying to GlassFish. However, this app has a couple of daemon processes and it would be ideal if these could be part of the WAR file, and potentially monitored by Glassfish (if possible). I've looked at QuartzScheduler, and while meets my needs for a couple of things, I have a daemon process that must execute every 20 seconds as it's polling the database for any delayed mail to send. If anyone can provide any insight as to how best to set up daemon processes in a JRuby/Java/Glassfish environment any help will be greatly appreciated! :)

• Translate model fields' attributes from a Database with Django?

  I'm trying to create a Model that has fields that have the following attributes translatable: verbose_name and choices. I can easily do this by tagging the strings and using the i18l middleware. The problem is that I don't want to define the translation in po/mo files. Is there a way to pull this data from a database table? If so, any examples? There are some options out there that offer model content translation. That is not my case. I need to translate the verbose_name, choices and error_messages from database.

  Does any US wireless carrier offer individuals or companies with a direct connection to the SMSC? The number is 747-772-3101 (repalce 7's with 6's) This number is registered to t-mobile, also verified by t-mobile to be a valid subscriber sending 160,000+ text messages monthly and that all they have is an unlimited text messaging plan on top of the cheapest voice plan. This company of the number verified to me that they don't use gsm modems as they are too slow. So I know it's possible but who would I contact, Sales or anyone else reachable through a 1-800 is ignorant to these services and developer.t-mobile is worthless and doesn't reply to emails. Any info??
