• Fitch Format Proofs - any resources around?

  I am currently studying Fitch Format first order logic proofs. My lecturer follows closely Language, Proof and Logic by Jon Barwise. I am trying to do some proofs but I am having some trouble getting to understand how to do these proofs. As I have already read what Language Proof and Logic has to offer, I'd like to know if there are any other books or resources around that use the Fitch format for their formal proofs. Plus, having solved exercises would be of great(!) help. Thanks

• simple authorisation in web api

  I want to make nice and clean api; I'm making site and I want to offer the ability to mobile apps use web API of my site. I don't want to use oAuth, becouse the mobile and embedded applications that are facing the biggest hurdle, as they may not be able to bring up and/or control the web browser. Also its a little complicate. I know, that HTTP basic authorisation is not safe, but it's so simple... I want to use it in my api. I have somee users logins and their passwords (md5-encoded) in mysql base, but how to use those data in this HTTP basic authorisation?

• Frameworks And 'traditional' coding

  Hello Sorry if this too open ended for this forum, but here goes. I mostly use languages such as PHP and Javascript without frameworks (e.g Jquery, Drupal, CakePHP). The only real exception to this for me, is Wordpress when 'traditional' coding is slower for building information sites. I've dabbled with several frameworks over the past year and despite everyone else's (seemingly) good experiences with them, I seem to of hit a roadblock. My basic problem is that for the amount of time invested in effectively relearning a language, I don't get a lot in return. Jqeury as an example. There is really very little in that, that I couldn't accomplish easily with a few getElement.. commands. So my question is, what advantages do frameworks offer over previous coding styles? • Why people don't use LabView for purposes other than data acquisition and virtualization?

  This is marked as a subjective question, I hope I won't get too many down votes though. LV seems to offer a nice graphic alternative to traditional text based programming. As I understand, it's not a just-virtualization/data acquisition programming language. Nonetheless, it seems to have that paradigm pegged to its creator's name. My question comes up because it doesn't seem to be widely used for multi-purpose applications. I'm not a LV-expert of any kind, I'm more like a learner. I'm still getting used to LV.

  So I wrote a project-management program for a small business using Microsoft Access 2007. Now they've requested lots of additional features (timekeeping, privileged data tiers ...) I personally use Linux, but the whole office uses Windows. I'm relatively new to programming but like to teach myself using projects like this. I'm right on the edge on this -- I can't really tell what the path of least resistance here is: do I stay in access + VBA and teach myself a dying, annoying language -- while struggling against all the limitations of Access? Or do I move to something else? Python seems simple enough ... Whatever I use, i need to be able to offer a GUI.

• How to redefine symbol names in objects with RVCT?

  I currently develop a small OS for an embedded platform based on a ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. The OS provides an API for customer application development. The OS kernel and the API is compiled into a static lib by the ARMCC compiler and customer can link his application against it. The lib and the containing object files offer the complete list of symbols used in kernel. To "protect" the kernel and its inner states from extern hooking into obvious variables and functions, I would like to do some easy obfuscation by renaming the symbols randomly. The GNU binutils seems to do this by calling objcopy with the --redefine-sym flag. The GNU binutils cannot read the ARMCC / RVCT objects. Is there any solution to do this kind of obfuscation with RVCT?

• why is internet explorer displaying my javascript pagination backwards?

  Here's a version of the code I'm using, stripped down to just the parts that aren't working. This is all written to generate some basic pagination with jQuery. In Chrome/Safari/Moz, I generate see spans, 1,2,3,4,...,etc When I look in IE7/8, I see etc,...,4,3,2,1 The string seems to be concatenating backwards!! This seems very strange to me, because there's not a whole lot going on in the code here, I can't figure out which bit could be causing problems. • Using read() directly into a C++ std:vector

  I'm wrapping up user space linux socket functionality in some C++ for an embedded system (yes, this is probably reinventing the wheel again). I want to offer a read and write implementation using a vector. Doing the write is pretty easy, I can just pass &myvec[0] and avoid unnecessary copying. I'd like to do the same and read directly into a vector, rather than reading into a char buffer then copying all that into a newly created vector. Now, I know how much data I want to read, and I can allocate appropriately (vec.reserve). I can also read into &myvec[0], though this is probably a VERY BAD IDEA. Obviously doing this doesn't allow myvec.size to return anything sensible. Is there any way of doing this that 1) Doesn't completely feel yucky from a safety/C++ perspective and 2) Doesn't involve two copies of the data block - once from kernel to user space and once from a C char * style buffer into a C++ vector. Any thoughts collective?

  I realise there are EL and near EL frameworks like StringTemplate, JUEL, Velocity, etc. However, I am not asking for list of alternatives to JSTL/EL. I came across a package more than a year ago, someone who wrote a util that emulates the functionality of JSP for non-servlet env, i.e., JSP composition which does not need a "servlet container" to function. I ignored it and now I think it would be helpful to me and I need help to recall what it is. My actual motivation is similar to what StringTemplate, JUEL, Velocity would offer to help me compose SQL blocks, HTML blocks but I am thinking that JSPs are precompiled into bytecode and JSPs are more run-time efficient since run-time parsing is done no more than once. So actually, recommendation for alternatives would be acceptable as long as the templates are precompiled into bytecode. But I still prefer the JSP emulator.

• C#, WinForms: What would prevent KeyDown events from chaining up from focused control up to main For

  As i understand it, when a keyboard button is pressed it should invoke the KeyDown event for the control which has focus. Then, the KeyDown for the parent control, so on and so forth until it reaches main form. UNLESS - along the chain one of the EventHandlers did: e.SuppressKeyPress = true; e.Handled = true; In my case, KeyDown events never get to the main form. I have Form - Panel - button for example. Panel doesn't offer a KeyDown Event, but it shouldn't stop it from reaching the main form right? Right now as a work around I set every single control to call an event handler I wrote. I'm basically trying to prevent Alt-F4 from closing the application and instead minimize it.

• Error loading SQL_VARIANT data type using Python

  I am using Python and SQLAlchemy to query a database that I did not create. I have run into a problem querying a table that contains the SQL_VARIANT data type. I get the error: sqlalchemy.exc.DBAPIError: (Error) ('ODBC data type -150 is not supported. Cannot read column Value.', 'HY000') I confirmed with the database creator that the "Value" column is of type SQL_VARIANT. Does anyone know a way to load this data type using Python? I am currently using mssql with pyodbc. Thank you for any help you can offer! Versions: Python 2.7, SQLAlchemy 0.7.8

  Hello, I am creating an application using ASP.NET MVC (2) and Spring.NET. • Generating PDF's via Delayed Job while maintaing a RESTful pattern.

  Hi, currently I am running a Rails app on Heroku, and everything is working great with exception of generating PDF documents that sometimes contain thousands of records. Heroku has a built-in timeout of 30 seconds, so if the request takes more than 30 seconds, it's abandoned. That's fine, since they offer delayed_job support built-in. However, all of the PDF's i generate follow a typical restful pattern. For instance, a request to "/posts.pdf" generates a pdf (using PRAWN and PRAWNTO) and it's delivered to the browser. So my basic question is, how do I create dynamically generated PDF's with delayed_job while maintaining the basic RESTful patterns Rail's so conveniently provides. Thanks.

• Looking for Team Development type Software like SVN

  I am in need of a software that is PHP-Based, or similar that can be installed on my server that doesn't offer SVN Perks. It should be somewhat similar to an SVN, however, since the server doesn't support SVN, we'll need another means of doing sort of the same thing. We have a team of Developers and need to accomplish progress in the same way that an SVN does, but without that type of server support. Is there any software that could be installed via webhosting that would be somewhat, if not exactly, similar to an SVN? • Generic function to handle DataType Conversion

  I have the following function in C#, that I want to pass a MySQL DataReader value/object. If the value of the object passed is a DBNull I need to handle it and return a Null value of that data type e.g null int. Otherwise I want to convert the returned value like Convert.ToInt32(value) or similar. public static T ConvertFromDB<T>(object value) { return value == DBNull.Value ? default(T) : (T)value; } Can anyone offer any help on this ?

• How to programatically set cell.textLabel.text from a different view?

  I've got a view controller, call it VC1, that's a table view. When I tap a cell in the table view, I am presented with a new view controller, call it VC2, which is a short list of choices. After making a choice, I want to dismiss VC2 and set the cell.textLabel.text property of the VC1 cell I originally tapped to the value I selected in VC2. Conceptually speaking, what is the proper way to do this? I've tried a handful of different approaches, but all of them seem wonky at best, and only one of them actually worked - although it was the most cumbersome of all, passing references to both view controllers and table view cells and all kinds of things. It just feels like I'm making a mountain out of what is probably a mole hill. This is such a common paradigm that I find it hard to believe there's not a simple method for doing it. • navigation framework in silverlight 3 skipping constructor when usercontrol is of a derived type

  Hi: I am using the NavigationFramework in Silverlight 3, and am running into issues where the constructor of the UserControl in the xaml I am loading is not being called, and I believe this is because the UserControl in the xaml I am calling is actually derived from another user control. I have stepped through the debugger with specific break points and the constructor is being ignored completey. I have MyWindowBlue which is of type uctrlBaseMyWindow. The constructor for uctrlBaseMyWindow is being called when the xaml is 'navigated to' but the constructor for MyWindowBlue is being ignored. This is not the case if I add the user control via markup directly. Anyone else have this issue? The code I am using to navigate to the MyWindowBlue is this.MyContentFrame.Navigate(new Uri("/Controls/uctrlMyWindowBlue.xaml", UriKind.Relative)); Has anyone run into this or could offer any help? • Creating standalone, console (shell) for domain-specific operations

  Say that I have a system service, and I want to offer a low-level maintenance access to it. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

• How can one manage to fully use the newly enhanced Parallelism features in .NET 4.0?

  I am pretty much interested into using the newly enhanced Parallelism features in .NET 4.0. I have also seen some possibilities of using it in F#, as much as in C#. Despite, I can only see what PLINQ has to offer with, for example, the following: var query = from c in Customers.AsParallel() where (c.Name.Contains("customerNameLike") select c; There must for sure be some other use of this parallelism thing. Have you any other examples of using it? Is this particularly turned toward PLINQ, or are there other usage as easy as PLINQ? Thanks! =)

• What is the Simplest Possible Payment Gateway to Implement? (using Django)

  I'm developing a web application that will require users to either make one time deposits of money into their account, or allow users to sign up for recurring billing each month for a certain amount of money. I've been looking at various payment gateways, but most (if not all) of them seem complex and difficult to get working. I also see no real active Django projects which offer simple views for making payments. Ideally, I'd like to use something like Amazon FPS, so that I can see online transaction logs, refund money, etc., but I'm open to other things. I just want the EASIEST possible payment gateway to integrate with my site. I'm not looking for anything fancy, whatever does the job, and requires < 10 hours to get working from start to finish would be perfect. I'll give answer points to whoever can point out a good one. • Translate model fields' attributes from a Database with Django?

  I'm trying to create a Model that has fields that have the following attributes translatable: verbose_name and choices. I can easily do this by tagging the strings and using the i18l middleware. The problem is that I don't want to define the translation in po/mo files. Is there a way to pull this data from a database table? If so, any examples? There are some options out there that offer model content translation. That is not my case. I need to translate the verbose_name, choices and error_messages from database.

• 2d parabolic projectile

  I'm looking to create a basic Javascript implementation of a projectile that follows a parabolic arc (or something close to one) to arrive at a specific point. I'm not particularly well versed when it comes to complex mathematics and have spent days reading material on the problem. Unfortunately, seeing mathematical solutions is fairly useless to me. I'm ideally looking for pseudo code (or even existing example code) to try to get my head around it. Everything I find seems to only offer partial solutions to the problem. In practical terms, I'm looking to simulate the flight of an arrow from one location (the location of the bow) to another. It strikes me there are two distinct problems here: determining the position of interception between the projectile and a (moving) target, and then calculating the trajectory of the projectile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Reading ResultSet from multiple threads

  Hello, In the database, I have a definition table that is read from the application once upon starting. This definition table rarely changes, so it makes sense to read it once and restart the application every time it changes. However, after the table is read (put into a ResultSet), it will be read by multiple handlers running in their own threads. How do you suggest to accomplish this? My idea was to populate a CachedRowSet, and then create a copy of this set (through the createCopy() method) for each handler every time a new request comes. Do you think this is wise? Does this offer a good performance? Thanks.
