• Multi screen RDP in Windows 8.1 Enterprise

  I have just flattened my machine and installed Windows 8.1 Enterprise Edition. I have used the Hyper-V to create a virtual machine for my Software Development stuff, on my VM I have also installed Windows 8.1 Enterprise Edition. I want to have two screen support when using this VM (not using /span) Both the Hyper-V viewer and Remote Desktop give me a tickbox to "Use all my monitors for the remote session". However even with it ticked (and even when I tried the /multimon switch on the command line), I only get a single screen. Am I missing something - this should be supported in Enterprise edition, right? Is there some extra config I need to do on the RDP host? Forgive me if it's an obvious question, I'm more a developer and just stumbling through ;-) Cheers! Ben

• Ubuntu Slow - What architecture does the Windows Installer install?

  I feel absolutely limited by using Windows, and I need to switch to a Unix environment. I once installed Red Hat on my lappie (screen + external monitor setup; 4GB ram; x64; runs fast) and it worked fine, but I saw that the computer cluster that is the birthplace of my unix knowledge switched to Ubuntu, so naturally I follow. To the point. When I installed Ubuntu onto my machine via the Windows Installer, it ran quite slow. Opening Firefox takes about 8-9 seconds, it freezes up often, unable to handle its own background processes. I saw in a thread that, perhaps, it is running slow because the Windows Installer is installing an x64 version. Of course, my computer has had no performance issues in the past(except that time with the trojans but you know, know one is perfect ;) ) Anyways, I uninstalled Ubuntu, freeing up the max allocated memory it took up, and continue to be sad, trapped in my MS world with only a buggy Cygwin, any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ~Ben

• Vacation scheduler/viewer

  I'm looking for a solution that allows multiple persons to put plan and notify their vacation by putting it in their electronic calendar and invite a dedicated "robot" email. On the other side I should be able to get a quick overview of the vacation for each person and do a print out that allows me to put it on a board. Example: John puts his winter vacation for week 7 into his calendar and invite [email protected]. Ben does the same thing for week 4 and 5 and invites [email protected]. Dilbert host the [email protected] and prints out and overview for the next 3 months. Each person's vacation is either stated by name or/and color on the print out. I would like to do the thing with standard business software like Outlook 2010 without installing too many softwares. But at the same time it should be easy and quick to make the print outs without too much fiddling Am I dreaming ?

• Windows 7 + NVidia == 640x480 on external projectors

  Hello, I'm having a major problem and I really need your help! I have a MacBook Air which has the NVidia 9400M. The problem is, when I connect it to an external projector Windows 7 (and Vista) only allow me to connect at 640x480. I need it to use the laptop to present at conferences, as such I need it to work on a number of different projectors - at the moment I need to use OSX and VMWare but it's painfully slow and really doesn't work. At the moment, I'm considering buying a new laptop :( Is there any way to override the screen resolutions provided? I've saw some information around EDID? Thanks Ben

• iPhone core data problem : referenceData64 only defined for abstract class

  I have an application that downloads/parses a big XML file and store the information using core data (approx. 4000 objects (entities)). The XML is loaded/parsed in a different thread, which has its own NSManagedObjectContext. When trying to save the entities to the persistent store, I sometimes get the following error (about 20%) 2010-03-03 23:41:42.802 xxx[7487:4203] Exception in XML saving 2010-03-03 23:41:42.802 xxx[7487:4203] Description: * -_referenceData64 only defined for abstract class. Define -[NSTemporaryObjectID_default _referenceData64]! 2010-03-03 23:41:42.803 xxx[7487:4203] Name: NSInvalidArgumentException 2010-03-03 23:41:42.804 xxx[7487:4203] UserInfo: (null) 2010-03-03 23:41:42.805 xxx[7487:4203] Reason: * -_referenceData64 only defined for abstract class. Define -[NSTemporaryObjectID_default _referenceData64]! I have a simple integer to keep track of the entities the application creates compared to the insertedObjects property in the NSManagedObjectContext before saving, and when I get the error, these numbers do not match, insertedObjects in the NSManagedObjectContext is missing about 10 entities. I do not know how I should continue to investigate this problem, anyone has any idea how to fix this? Thanks /oscar

• How to react when asked a question you already know during an interview

  The short story:- If you are asked a tough algorithmic/puzzle question during an interview, whose solution is already known to you, do you:- Honestly tell the interviewer that you know this question already? -- this could result in bursting the interviewer's ego and him increasing the complexity level of the subsequent questions. Do an Oscar deserving performance and act as if you are thinking and trying hard and slowly getting to the solution? -- depending on your acting skills, could majorly impress the interviewer making the rest of the interview easier. Long story:- OK, this question comes as a result of what happened to me in a recent telephonic interview that I gave - the interview was supposed to be all algorithmic. The interviewer started with an algorithmic question which I had luckily already seen here on Stackoverflow. The best solution to that problem is not very intuitive and is more of a you-get-it-if-you-know-it kind. Now, just to not disappoint the interviewer too much, I took a few seconds as if I was pondering on the problem and then blurted out the answer which I knew too well having read and admired it on SO already. But I guess that gave it away to the interviewer that I already knew this question and since then, he started asking me for more efficient solutions and I kept coming up with approaches (even if not correct or more efficient, but I did touch a lot of different data structures and algos) and he kept asking for more efficient solutions and generally seemed put off by my initial salvo which was unexpected. • Inner angle between two lines

  Hi folks, I have two lines: Line1 and Line2. Each line is defined by two points (P1L1(x1, y1), P2L1(x2, y2) and P1L1(x1, y1), P2L3(x2, y3)). I want to know the inner angle defined by these two lines. For do it I calculate the angle of each line with the abscissa: double theta1 = atan(m1) * (180.0 / PI); double theta2 = atan(m2) * (180.0 / PI); After to know the angle I calculate the following: double angle = abs(theta2 - theta1); The problem or doubt that I have is: sometimes I get the correct angle but sometimes I get the complementary angle (for me outer). How can I know when subtract 180º to know the inner angle? There is any algorithm better to do that? Because I tried some methods: dot product, following formula: result = (m1 - m2) / (1.0 + (m1 * m2)); But always I have the same problem; I never known when I have the outer angle or the inner angle! • Can't install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire M1100

  When I install Windows 7, everything goes smooth but as soon as it's done and Windows needs to reboot for the last time before getting the desktop, the computer stucks to Verify DMI Pool Data............. and then, nothing. I change the CMOS battery, I tried so many setup in BIOS, even load default settings... Nothing worked. The HDD light is not flickering anymore, no HDD activity. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. It's just impossible to load Windows 7. I tried Windows XP and this works fine. I also tried the Acer (Futureshop) recovery CD and I get an Hexademical error message stating the install cannot continue. Is there a BIOS flash apps somewhere or a fix I can apply to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer. Any takers?

• Rsync from godaddy to OS X

  I would like to use rsync to backup my website to my local computer (OS X). I started of with this guide and got pretty far. I use the following rsync-line: rsync -PzrlptgD --del --delete-excluded -r --rsync-path=~/bin/rsync user@server:~/ /local/backup/folder/ I wanted to use the -a option (same as rlptgoD) but it crashes as soon as I use the -o flag. receiving file list ... rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [receiver=2.6.9] If I skip the --owner flag it copies the files but I'm not really sure what difference it makes (I've tried to read up on it but found nothing) Should I just skip using the --owner flag?   I'm having trouble getting into BIOs Setup from Supermicro IPMI "KVM" - Remote Control Console Redirection. I need to change the boot order to CDROM first. I'm running Windows 2008 server. After some Googling, it says here that the method is to: Press TAB to enter Setup screen. Press Esc twice to take effect. http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=6222 A month ago, I tried that 30-40 times + DEL, over 2 hours, it worked. Now, I've been trying the same key combination for more than an hour, rebooting each time it failed, it still doesn't work. Note: I've only got a notebook computer, no extra monitor.

• Dell Inspiron 1520 Intermittent connection to wireless router

  I have two computers in my home which are connected to a wireless router and a wireless printer. One computer is a Del XPS and the other a Dell laptop Inspiron 1520. In recent weeks we noticed the Inspiron had difficulty maintaining connection to the wireless router - web pages would suddenly have to be reloaded, or the computer rebooted while the other computer, the XPS, had no problems on the same network. So we connected a hard wire line from the Inspiron to the Verizon supplied wireless router. Problems still exist. could it be a bad driver?

While this is easy enough, I'd like to take it a step further and have a shortcut in my browser's toolbar that when clicked executes the above-mentioned key combination, something like this: Is this directly possible, or would it require creating a plugin? • Dreamweaver Delete Space to Word, Not Word

  There's a built in DW keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Del) that deletes up to AND INCLUDING the first word to the right. I used to use the ColdFusion Studio app for coding and it would just remove the space UP TO the word (left the word or bracket, or whatever alone.) Any DW users know if this is a setting that can be changed? I'm really used to the old behavior and keep deleting the first word, hitting Ctrl + Z to put it back and then having to manually delete all the spaces to leave the word... Hoping one of you geniuses can help! Thanks, D.

  I have to setup an embedded standalone CIFS server outside of domain environment. I shall refer to the server as storage_gateway. The default password setting for the Administrator account is Password must be changed. Until Administrator password is changed other local accounts are disabled. While the server is on default password connecting to a share causes fails with NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE error. $ smbclient -L //storage_gateway -U Administrator session setup failed: NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE I have a mixed Linux/Windows environment and prefer smbclient for diagnostics. To change the password in Windows 2003 Server I could press CTRL-ALT-DEL to get into the Windows Security window and change password for the remote server specifying the server name or ip address (xx.xx.xx.xx) in the system password change dialog. (the name root is just an example, I have edited the dialogs to translate them) However in Windows 2008 the corresponding dialog lacks the Log on to field. Is there a way to change a remote password in Windows 2008 Server/Windows 7?

• What can I do to prevent my user folder from being tampered with by malicious software?

  Let's assume some things: Back-ups do run every X minutes, yet the things I save should be permanent. There's a firewall and virus scanner in place, yet there happens to be a zero day attack on me. I am using Windows. (Although feel free to append Linux / OS X parts to your answer) Here is the problem Any software can change anything inside my user folder. Tampering with the files could cost me my life, whether it's accessing / modifying or wiping them. So, what I want to ask is: Is there a permission-based way to disallow programs from accessing my files in any way by default? Extending on the previous question, can I ensure certain programs can only access certain folders? Are there other less obtrusive ways than using Comodo? Or can I make Comodo less obtrusive? For example, the solution should be proof against (DO NOT RUN): del /F /S /Q %USERPROFILE%

• System and active partitions, and "System Reserved"

  Upon trying a 3rd party bootloader (loaded from a disc), and trying to boot into my partition "Windows 7", I get "BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". But ordinary booting works fine. So I'm thinking, that perhaps it's because of my partitions. Upon opening "Disk Management", I notice out of my partitions, "System Reserved", "Windows 7" and "Documents", "Documents" is marked as both System and Active. I've looked into what an active partition is, and what "System Reserved" is for, so I'm thinking - should I mark "System Reserved" as active? The problem is, all images of Disk Management depicting "System Reserved" have it with both System and Active attributes, and so I am unsure on what to do, and also on why my "Documents" partition even is marked with System and Active.

  I have a non-daemon server app that my windows 2003 server needs to run all the time. The problem is, every time the server restarts, be it electricity or windows update, someone needs to press ctrl alt del and enter username/password. Then the program starts, as it's in startup. How do I make windows 2003 to automatically log in to administrator or spawn a terminal services session every time the system boots? I know it's against the nature of servers and all. But this is the only thing the server does.

• Shut Down took way too long because of "Background Programs"

  I tried shutting my desktop PC (with Windows7) down but after several attempts (like 4 or 5) at Start -- Shut Down, the GUI was still there and it was not shutting down. I didn't think there were any programs running when I pressed Shut Down, so I went into the taskbar (Ctrl + Alt + Del) to check out the processes. Once I did that, a screen appeared with a message stating that there are "background programs" still running and it gave me an option to "Force Shut Down" which I pressed and it shut down normally. Does anyone know why this would happen?

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the hardware virtualization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that I need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? Is there another way besides from the startup?

• HDD is not readable - can I fix this

  I have two HDD in my system, but today morning the additional hard disk is not readable. My all data are kept inside the additional HDD. When I disconnect the additional HDD from my system then system boot as usual, but when I connect HDD my system hangs Up in windows boot logo. Please note this problem is not related to HDD order. When I connect only the additional HDD then system shows this error: disk not readable press ctrl+alt+del to restart I can see the name of additional HDD in BIOS. When I connect both HDD i get a continues beep... beeep .. beep sound. Please tell me is my HDD gone dead ? How do I get the data back ? is there any kit for recovering HDD data ?

I'm using windows implementation of grep. The 2%LOGFILE% in both java and grep command is causing an error message indicating the file is being use by another process. The Ugly workaround i have came up with is to put grep error redirect to a temporary %LOGFILE%.aux java ... | grep ... 2%LOGFILE%.aux type %LOGFILE%.aux % %LOGFILE% del %LOGFILE%.aux What is a better solution?
