• IASA ITARC &ndash; Denver May 6th

  The Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is holding an IT Architect Regional Conference (ITARC) in Denver on May 6th. The speaker list for this conference is amazing. Paul Rayner, Dave McComb, Randy Kahle, Peter Provost, Randy Stafford, George Fairbanks – all great speakers, and from Colorado. Brandon Satrom (who also happens to be the president of the IASA Austin chapter) will also be speaking, as will some other heavy hitters (for example, Ted Farrell, Chief Architect and Senior VP of Oracle). This is an amazing line-up, and the conference is quite reasonably priced ($150 for IASA members until April 10th, including a catered lunch). I also have the privilege of being a presenter at this conference. If you’ve ever heard any of the previously named speakers, you know that they set the bar quite high. Sounds like I’m going to have to step up my game. What I get to talk about is really cool stuff. The company I work for – Colorado CustomWare – brought me on board nearly two years ago. To say there was some technical debt is somewhat… understated. Equally understated would be that management is committed to doing the right thing. Over the past two years, we’ve done significant architectural refactoring – including an effort that took the entire team offline for most of a month. We’ve reduced the application size by 50% without losing functionality. As you can imagine, this has reduced the complexity of the application, making development faster and less prone to bugs. We’ve made many other changes – moving to an agile process, training developers, moving towards a more OO architecture. The changes we’ve made reveal, in some ways, just how far afield we were.. and there are still more changes to be made. Amazingly enough, our leadership team is eager for me to share these experiences with other architects. I’m really looking forward to being able to do so.

• Internet stops working after heavy downloading, video/audio streaming etc

  As mentioned in title, Internet stops working on my PC after heavy downloading, video/audio streaming etc. There are no errors, no disconnections etc. Simply after some time (certain amount of data downloaded) I can't get any more. If I try using ping afterwards nothing happens. If ping is running simultaneously with streaming/downloading I get some correct responses and then it keeps showing an error. What helps is re-plugging my Pentagram USB wifi card, but I hope there is a better solution. Edit: One more thing: my friend who works in IT suggested that it might have something to do with cache (DNS cache? I don't remember him specifying) getting filled while it should be emptied automatically.

• Performance cost of running Ubuntu from external hard drive

  A friend just complained to me about Ubuntu being slow. Although I've noticed a certain lack of snappiness with Linux vs Windows in the past, I really can't say I've had much to grumble about with the recent distributions of Ubuntu. That said, his objections seem much worse than the ones I used to have and I know that his current setup is significantly more powerful than my laptop. And then it turned out he is running Ubuntu off an external HDD hooked up via USB2.0. The HD enclosure is USB3.0 but apparently he can't manage to get it to boot on USB3.0 so he switched to one of the USB2.0 ports or whatever and that works, albeit not very well. Now I would expect USB to add some overhead to communication between the computer and the HDD; SATA is after all designed to get the maximum out of a hard drive, whereas USB is, well, universal. What are your expreriences with booting off external HDDs? Edit: Does anybody know just how much of a slowdown can be expected?

• How do I fix skype on x86 11.10 desktop which garbles audio both ways in connection with a Windows user?

  Strange phenomena ? I have a friend I connect with and talk to regularly occasionally using video. He runs Windows XP with a Logitech webcam and mike. I run Windows XP with a Logitech webcam and mike, and a laptop with built in webcam and mike running both 11.10 x86 Desktop and Windows XP Home. We gab and ogle fine with these. But when I installed 11.10 x86 with GNOME 3.2 dual boot on the same machine with the Logitech webcam and mike, whenever I try to ogle and gab the audio is total garbled. When I make a test call to skype or call somebody on a landline or cell - there's no problem. In summary, everything works except for when running 11.10 x86 GNOME 3.2 connected to his Windows XP. Stumped on this end.

• Intelligence as a vector quantity

  I am reading this wonderful book called "Coders at Work: Reflections on the Craft of Programming" by Peter Seibel and I am at part wherein the conversation is with Joshua Bloch and I found this answer which is an important point for a programmer. The paragraph, goes something like this. There's this problem, which is, programming is so much of an intellectual meritocracy and often these people are the smartest people in the organization; therefore they figure they should be allowed to make all the decisions. But merely the fact they are the smartest people in the organization does not mean that they should be making all the decisions, because intelligence is not a scalar quantity; it's a vector quantity. Here at the last sentence, I fail to get the insight which is he trying to share. Can someone explain it in a little further as what he means by a vector quantity, possibly trying to present the same insight. Further down, I get the point that he is not taking about having an organization where non-technical people (sometimes clueless) can be managers of the technical people for some reason that they can spend more time to write emails well, because the very next statement following the above paragraph was. And if you lack empathy or emotional intelligence, then you shouldn't be designing APIs or GUIs or languages. I understand that he is saying that in Software engineering, programmers should know how the users will see their product and design for them. I felt the above paragraph was very interesting.

• HD flash video lagging on LG R400

  I'm installing Ubuntu on my friends laptop. An LG R400 with ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphics drivers. On Windows Vista which runs pretty slow the HD flash videos 1080p on Youtube vimeo and other places work with no problems, but on Ubuntu i can not really play videos above 480p Above that they are lagging. That annoys me because i know he will use them, and how am i supposed to convince him that Ubuntu is the way to go if it can not play the videos that windows vista can? Unity 3d is working fine so i think the graphics drivers is working, and when i download the hd videos and play as mp4 in vlc they also work fine. lspci -nn | grep VGA shows the following: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 Hope that someone can help me convince my friend that Ubuntu is rocking!

• Is this a DNS or server-side error?

  I am having difficulty accessing a specific website. (I get 500 Server fault errors) I can access this site on my iPhone when NOT connected to WiFi. I CANNOT access the site when connected to WiFi or via a Ethernet connection to my home network. I thought it might be a DNS issue, so I copied the DNSservers from a friend who has a different ISP, and has no problem access the site. No luck. Also tried some of the public DNS servers out there, again, with no luck. Does anyone have any idea on how to trace this issue?

• How do people charge friends for development projects?

  A friend has begged our consulting firm several times to build an iPhone app. We are reluctant to jeopardize the friendship and charge market rates. At the same time, we're so busy it would be imprudent not to charge fairly. We tried referring her to other shops, but she doesn't feel comfortable with anyone but us. How do people charge friends? Since I'm asking about fees, I'm also curious to know if people charge on a fixed-price basis or hourly basis? Thanks!

• "Unable to create OpenGL 3.3 context (flags 0, profile 1)"

  Trying to run any of the well-known McKesson's tutorials on a friend's laptop results in the aforementioned exception. I read that in order to run applications which use OpenGL 3.3 you must at least have an ATI HD or Nvidia 8xxx GPU series. He has an ATI HD class graphics processor which eliminates (maybe) this issue. Also, I read that this error may result in having old drivers. He updated his drivers but that didn't solve the problem. The tutorials are built as said in the book introduction and glsdk is installed. If more information is needed, say so and I will provide it. What are the other reasons for this kind of exception? And how can I fix them?

• Is "no installation" software a good thing?

  I am building an application that will, hopefully, be used by developers. To be appealing to developers I want it to be lightweight, small in size, and with no installation (e.g. xcopy). I trust more an application without installation to not put garbage in my registry, to be lightweight etc. My friend thinks the opposite: An installer puts shortcuts on the desktop / menu for me, it ensures cleanup via the uninstaller, and seems more official. I'm curious - what is everyone's take on this?

• UPK Basics Hands On Lab at Oracle Open World Latin America

  Orrcle Open World Latin America 2012 will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil December fourth through the sixth.   My friend and i are developing a android game. This is my first time develop android game, so we don't know how to code The game is 2d game and we develop it without 3rd party engine / framework. Now we got a few questions, hope you can help us. In game play, using 'Surfaceview' only to achieve it. Is it best practice? On 'Surfaceview', a lot of difference button(Menu, pause, game object..etc) is on it, but I don't know how to code it? (actually, i have already done, but...so stupid way. Detect the user touch position (x, y) to identify where they touch[rect(x1,y1,x2,y2).contain(x,y)] Is it right? Teach me how to do if wrong. View / Surfaceview / OpenGL, which is suitable for us? • SQL SERVER – Curious Case of Disappearing Rows – ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE – Part 1 of 2

  Social media has created an Always Connected World for us. Recently I enrolled myself to learn new technologies as a student. I had decided to focus on learning and decided not to stay connected on the internet while I am in the learning session. On the second day of the event after the learning was over, I noticed lots of notification from my friend on my various social media handle. He had connected with me on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube as well SMS, WhatsApp on the phone, Skype messages and not to forget with a few emails. I right away called him up. The problem was very unique – let us hear the problem in his own words. “Pinal – we are in big trouble we are not able to figure out what is going on. Our product details table is continuously loosing rows. Lots of rows have disappeared since morning and we are unable to find why the rows are getting deleted. We have made sure that there is no DELETE command executed on the table as well. The matter of the fact, we have removed every single place the code which is referencing the table. We have done so many crazy things out of desperation but no luck. The rows are continuously deleted in a random pattern. Do you think we have problems with intrusion or virus?” After describing the problems he had pasted few rants about why I was not available during the day. I think it will be not smart to post those exact words here (due to many reasons). Well, my immediate reaction was to get online with him. His problem was unique to him and his team was all out to fix the issue since morning. As he said he has done quite a lot out in desperation. I started asking questions from audit, policy management and profiling the data. Very soon I realize that I think this problem was not as advanced as it looked. There was no intrusion, SQL Injection or virus issue. Well, long story short first - It was a very simple issue of foreign key created with ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE.  CASCADE allows deletions or updates of key values to cascade through the tables defined to have foreign key relationships that can be traced back to the table on which the modification is performed. ON DELETE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to delete a row with a key referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all rows containing those foreign keys are also deleted. ON UPDATE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to update a key value in a row, where the key value is referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all of the foreign key values are also updated to the new value specified for the key. (Reference: BOL) In simple words – due to ON DELETE CASCASE whenever is specified when the data from Table A is deleted and if it is referenced in another table using foreign key it will be deleted as well. In my friend’s case, they had two tables, Products and ProductDetails. They had created foreign key referential integrity of the product id between the table. Now the as fall was up they were updating their catalogue. When they were updating the catalogue they were deleting products which are no more available. As the changes were cascading the corresponding rows were also deleted from another table. This is CORRECT. The matter of the fact, there is no error or anything and SQL Server is behaving how it should be behaving. The problem was in the understanding and inappropriate implementations of business logic.  What they needed was Product Master Table, Current Product Catalogue, and Product Order Details History tables. However, they were using only two tables and without proper understanding the relation between them was build using foreign keys. If there were only two table, they should have used soft delete which will not actually delete the record but just hide it from the original product table. This workaround could have got them saved from cascading delete issues. I will be writing a detailed post on the design implications etc in my future post as in above three lines I cannot cover every issue related to designing and it is also not the scope of the blog post. More about designing in future blog posts. Once they learn their mistake, they were happy as there was no intrusion but trust me sometime we are our own enemy and this is a great example of it. I'm self-studying so I don't have a professor to check my work. Please don't judge me :)

• How to mount a hidden NTFS WinRE which are on an external HDD

  A friend have given me her external hard drive which contains a backup of his Windows data. The disk has two NTFS partitions, once of them tagged as WinRe. When I do fdisk -lu I get Disk /dev/sdc: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x59725972 Dispositiu Arrenc. Inici Final Blocs Id Sistema /dev/sdc1 2048 3074047 1536000 27 Hidden NTFS WinRE /dev/sdc2 * 3074048 234438655 115682304 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT I never fought against this type of partitions and I haven't any idea of how to mount this and recover the data. Can someone help me?

• Develop website locally and push updates on Remote Server using Git

  Together with a friend we are looking to develop a website (using Symfony2). We are on a Shared Hosting with SSH access. Below is the environment we'd like to setup: * Use git as Version Control (we are new to Git) * Share the tasks and develop on our local machines * Push the updates onto the remote server Here's our initial thoughts on how to do it (assuming Git is already running both locally and remotely): * Install Symfony on the Remote Server (basic setup) * Get a clone (using Git) of the project locally * Develop project locally and push updates (using Git) on the remote server Does this approach make sense, if not, any recommendations? • Legal concern over "borrowed" code

  A company my friend works for (let's call him Me) recently unveiled a new face for their internal "networking" website. This new face looks remarkably like Facebook, and indeed, examination of the source code reveals that it's almost identical: The code, class names, and even the fonts are the same. There is also no indication that Facebook is in any way involved or aware. I know this is unethical, but is it illegal? I can't find anything concrete about this to help Me decide what to do about it. EDIT: We're talking front-end code. It does not appear to be linking to Facebook in any way.
