• Cannot restart Ubuntu after replacing Unity with Gnome and purging lightdm

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10. I used the directions here to replace Unity with Gnome. It seemed to work fine until the end of step 2 when I rebooted the computer. When I chose the default option, I just got a black screen. When I choose the restore option and then "Restore normal boot" I get Starting load fallback graphics devices [fail] Starting GNOME Display Manager [ok] Starting Userspace bootsplash [ok] Stopping GNOME Display Manager [ok] Stopping Userspace bootsplash [ok] Starting web server apach22 [fail] (among a lot of OKs) It finally gets to Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ok] where it hangs. I left it overnight and just had a blank screen when I checked it in the morning. I can "Drop to root shell prompt" and "Drop to root shell prompt with networking". I did see here that one should be able to fix the problem by choosing remount and then doing apt-get install lightdm I tried this as root shell with and without networking and got the message Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneric-updates/main lightdm i386 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.7 Could not resolve 'us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu' What is the best way to resolve this problem? • Splitting up revenue among development team members on Apple's app store

  A friend and I have started developing an app to put on Apple's app store. Development is going fine, but thinking ahead, we're trying to come up with an easy way to share any revenue coming from our efforts. The app store allows you to deposit your revenue into a single bank account, but there's no easy way to split revenue among several people. How do (small) dev teams split up revenue on their products, on, and off the app store? As far as I can tell, banks don't offer an easy way to automatically split the balance on an account 50-50 (or any other percentage, for that matter), especially on a regular basis. So how do teams deal with this? We're not incorporated, and we don't have an official business set up. We're considering depositing all the money into one of our accounts and manually transferring half the money to the other person, but this isn't sustainable over long periods of time. Is there a low-cost, sustainable, automatic process for handling these finances?

• Good floor planner program?

  I'm planning to have a house built. I want to draw up some sketches on the computer, so I am looking for a program that can help me do this. It doesn't have to be a professional architecture tool; in fact that would be too complicated just yet (but maybe later on, for the detailed work...?). A simpler tool would be better. Features should include such things as ability to draw and move walls (not just using simple boxes), calculate room/floor area, add windows and doors, and the like. That's why Inkscape or OOo Presentation won't do. On Windows, a friend would just download a cracked professional architecture tool but that is not what I want to do. Suggestions?

  I was always told I was left brained and could not draw. And I bought into that view. Somewhere down the road years ago I did learn to play guitar and to play by ear at that.  Now that’s not all left brained so my right brain must be working.  About a year ago, my good friend Billy Hollis turned me own to a book by Betty Edwards (http://www.drawright.com/).  I started reading this and soon I found my self drawing on napkins in restaurants while we were waiting on food and at many other times too.  Dang’d if I could not draw! • How can I optimise ext4 for reliability?

  As ext4 was introduced as more reliable than ext3 with block journals, is there any chance to suppose it 100% reliable? What if enabling block journaling on it, which is disabled by default? As friend's guide to explain my case in more detail: I have an embedded linux device, after installation keyboard and monitor is detached and it works standalone. My duty is to make sure it has reliable file-system so with errors there is no way for manual correct faults on device. I can't force my customer to use a ups with each device to ensure no fault by power-failure. What more can ext4 offer me besides block journaling? Thanks in advance.

One of my friend told me that your websites index is visible and its one step away to access the password file and he shows me that very simply using the Google search. • Oracle SOA Suite 11g Administrator's Handbook

  SOA Administration Book I have just received a copy of the “Oracle SOA Suite 11g Administrator's Handbook” so as soon as I have read it I will let you know what I think.  In the meantime the first thing that struck me was the author credentials, although I have never met either of them as I remember, I have read Admeds blog postings and they are a great community resource, so immediately I am well disposed towards the book.  Similarly Arun is an employee of my friend and co-author Matt Wright, and I have heard good things about him from Rubicon Red people. A first glance at the table of contents looks encouraging, I particularly like their approach to performance tuning where they give a clear concise explanation of the knobs they are using. More when I have read more.

I will be creating a series of posts on the different guidance options as many people still do not know about them even though Willy-Peter Schaub has done a fantastic job of making sure they get the recognition they deserve. I have a tower that was running Windows XP from a friend, and want to load Ubuntu onto it. The boot options are Network Boot, Floppy, CD-ROM, Hard Drive. No USB option. Phoenix - AwardBios Core Version V6.0, BIOS Revision 3.11 5/17/2004 256 mb pc2700 I have my desktop running Ubuntu, but need to know how to get Ubuntu onto that tower. • Problems with EmusicJ on Ubuntu 14.04

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 in my new machine and have a subscription to emusic (because I used it before in my Windows days because of the great selection of classical music). I have used it on my old machine (running older versions of Ubuntu) with some success but am having difficulties doing so now. I am trying to use EmusicJ but do not/cannot remember how to do so. I have downloaded the program and unzipped it and ran the following command in a terminal: ./emusic If I remember correctly, once I go to the emusic site and download my music, the EmucisJ program should open and begin downloading the music through that program but this time it is not and I have already wiped my old box in order to give it to a friend. Any help is appreciated as I would like to continue with Emusic, but if I cannot get this resolved I will likely have to cancel my subscription and find a better alternative. Thanks.

• How do I share different files in a git repo with different people?

  In a single directory with a Git root folder, I have a bunch of files. I am working on one of those files, X.py, with my friend Alice. The other files I am working on with other people. I want Alice (and everyone else) to have access to X.py. I want Alice to only have access to X.py though. How can I achieve this with Git? Is there a way I can split a directory into two repos? That sounds rather cumbersome. Maybe I could add a remote repo that Alice can access containing X.py?

• Victory rewards in digital CCG

  I am currently polishing a digital CCG where people can play against friend and random opponents in a classical Magic the Gathering-like duel CCG. I plan to award the players with 20 ingame currency units (lets call them gold) for each hour they are playing, 50 for each day they are playing and X for each victory. Now, the X is what I am trying to calculate here, since I would prefer keeping the currency to a certain value, but also with to entice the players to battle. I could go with a solid figure, say 25, for beating up an opponent. But that would result in experienced players only beating up newly started players, making the experience lame for both. I could also make a laddered tier, where you start at level 1, and raise in level as you defeat your opponents, where winning over a player awards you his level x 2 in gold. Which would you prefer if you were playing a game like this. There is no gold-based scoreboard, but the gold is used to purchase new cards along the way.

• How to restore GRUB without re-installing the OS?

  A friend of mine has a Packard Bell laptop that came with Windows pre-installed. I installed Ubuntu on it and it works fine, but everytime she tried to boot Windows on it (fortunately rarely) it fails and the computer is unable to boot any OS anymore. Upon boot, the computer stops on a black screen with a GRUB Rescue prompt. Is there any way to restore GRUB without re-installing Ubuntu? (preferably an easy way as I cannot do it for her and she is not extremely computer literate) Also (but less important), is there a way to configure GRUB (or something else) so that Windows won't destroy it on every boot attempt?

The game will have a small map with mostly characters, not buildings (think of DotA or League of Legends). The authoritative game logic will run on the server and message packet sizes will be highly optimized. • Installing wireless drivers without internet access [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How can I install and download drivers without internet? (This is related to my other question; my approach there didn't work.) My friend has (I'm quite sure) a Broadcom wireless chipset. However, he doesn't have any wired internet access on the machine, so his only option is to boot into Windows (he is using Wubi) and download packages there. This means we can't use the Hardware Drivers dialog to install the drivers. He can't fetch the repository information, so the Broadcom driver packages aren't showing up in Synaptic. Is there any way to get Wi-Fi working?

• ethernet doesn't work

  I know that it may look pretty stupid, but that's it. I have a ethernet connection with my mom's computer, and is her's who's the source or anyway it is called. I'm new at linux, but i had before linux mint 13 and the ethernet didn't work 'till a friend went to network settings-options he clicked "add" somewhere and and introduced some numbers, after he looked somewhere in my mom's computer. I've tried neither linux nor ethernet until now. Please help and sorry for my english. P.S. I'm just 13 and I don't know much about computers so, please, talk to me as you would with a completely idiot. Thanks
