• How do you deal with information overload?

  There are so many (good) programming blogs out there. Some of them are consistent in what they post - as in they stick to programming topics. Some of them occasionally post on other unrelated topics. Also, not every programming post might be relevant to me. I might have read one good post once, and not wishing to miss any future good ones - subscribed to the blog. Subscribing to too many blog feeds usually leads to just skimming through all of them (which takes time as well). Another option might be to subscribe to aggregators, like Hacker News - but that too has a huge rate of link accumulation. How do you manage if you wish to keep up with the programming blogosphere and still maintain a good signal to noise ratio?

• problem connecting to wifi at long range

  I am using a compaq 8510p with internal wifi. The campground supplies an open wifi hotspot, to which I can connect at close range (30 ft) but not at longer range (300 ft). Connecting a usb dongle just confuses things. The dongle tries to lock on to all the wifi networks in my vicinity. They are password protected, but my laptop still tries to connect. I connected a cantenna via usb port and got a signal which said I was connected, but all web pages returned error 'unable to connect to server', despite having three bars showing on the wifi icon. I believe it because the installed wifi card interacts with the usb dongle. If so what can I do about it? I am using Ubuntu 12.04.

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

• Computer Freezes After GRUB

  Ok so I've just built my first computer and have got it running, here are the specs: Asus P8Z68-V PCI-E LX Motherboard, Intel Core i5-2500K, Patriot Memory 8GB (2 x 4GB), Viper Xtreme Series PC3-15000 1866MHz CL9 Division 2 Edition Memory (PXD38G1866ELK), Gigabyte ATI Radeon 6850 820MHz 1GB PCI-E HDMI OC Windforce 2x 500w Ezcool 24pin psu as standard. The only thing I haven't bought new is the hard drive, it's a 250gb that I removed from an Acer Aspire M5100 that I was using till now with no OS Problems. On start up it runs fine but is unresponsive after the GRUB menu disappears to load Ubuntu (Oneric Ocelot). The keyboard lights then turn off and the screen eventually returns that there is no signal. Is there anything that I could be missing from building? (This is my first attempt at building my own PC) Any input would be appreciated, thanks !

Analysis: This caused Internet Information Services (IIS) to assume that the worker process had stopped responding. Therefore, IIS terminated the worker process. Solution: 1. Open IIS manager. 2.Click application Pools>>select the application pool associated with the site>>and click Advanced Settings 3. Click Advanced Settings of the application pool and set the Ping Enabled property from True to False. Now, reattach the process from Visual Studio, you should not get the error message. • can not get Toshiba tv to full resolution

  I have a 23inch Toshiba model#23L1350U that I am using as a computer monitor via VGA plug; it is a full 1080P resolution TV but in Ubuntu it shows up as a Toshiba 72inch Television and wont go past the resolution 1366 by 1768. Has anyone came up with a solution to this problem..I used to get full 1080 resolution with my Insignia 32 inch TV so I know my hardware can push the signal, I am running a Radeon x1550 graphics cars 3200+ processor on a 756 chip set 64bit version of Ubuntu 13.04 your help is greatly appreciated and you may or may not be compensated for your time

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • How to fix slow wireless with Intel 4965 AGN? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Slow wireless with an Intel 4965 We run Ubuntu 12.04, 32bit, with the current kernel 3.2.27-generic on an MSI EX700. I've already added the 11n_disable=1 tweek, without whcih, wireless has been unusable. Now, it works OK, but speedtest shows: Windows XP - down 11.68mbps, up 2.07mbps Ubuntu 12.04 - down 2.06mbps up 2.0mbps We've disabled ipv6, tried static and dinamic IPs, tried both swcrypto=0 and swcrypto=1 options, none of whcih made any difference. The problem may be the symptom of high packet loss. For example, here's the output of iwconfig after booting and testing the speeds: wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"amu" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:78:9E:FA:32:C8 Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=58/70 Signal level=-52 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:11 Invalid misc:3627 Missed beacon:0 I've posted a help request before with lots of technical info and outputs.

• What's an acceptable "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

  After upgrading to 13.10, every time I boot I'm shown a login prompt (tty1) for ~30 seconds before lightdm automatically starts. Everything works fine after that. Any ideas on what I could try to fix/debug this? Maybe a clean install will fix this.
