• Best way to keep a MS DOS application alive? (Virtual MS DOS)

  Hi, I have a good old DOS application which is still required to run. Unfortunately the PC is dying and needs to be replaced. The PC was running Windows 98 and the software was executed in a MS Dos Command line. When we would order a new PC you would at least get a Windows XP which has the Win 2000 (NT) Kernel and is not DOS based. Now I need a strategy to be able to run a that DOS application on a new age PC. What I was thinking is to buy a standard office box and have a virtual PC or VMware setup which is running MS DOS and my DOS application? Would this be a way to go? Any concerns? What about 16Bit/32Bit… So any opinion, experiances or tip would be great …. Thanks

• Windows Vista to Windows 7 Gbit LAN slow file copy

  I have two computers with gigabit LAN, one running Windows 7 and the other running Vista. I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, with gigabit LAN ports. I created a shared directory on the Vista computer, mapped it as a network drive on the Win 7 computer, and tried copying a 2 GB file... and it's going at 900 KB/s Yep... 900 kilobytes per second, about 7 Mb/s. Why so slow? Any ideas?

• Unable to connect to the Report Server

  Win/7 Professional SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Reporting Services Configuration Manager When I launch it, shows correct Server Name, but report server instance is blank. When I press FIND I get: "Unable to connect to the Report Server " This is my development workstation, so no IIS installed. Seems to work fine on XP. SSMS works fine - no issues. I tried uninstalling SQL Server completely, rebooting, reinstalling a fresh download. Same result. I've googled every article I can find - nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction in case you've come across this yourself? Thanks.

• Force the computer to always use current display settings

  So I'm having a terrible black screen problem with my new installation of Windows 8. The screen basically goes to black every time I turn it on or sleep, or connect to an external or monitor. I dont really know what steps actually cause the problem and cant seem to figure what steps allow the screen to come back, besides forcing restarts, going to sleep and waking up, and smashing Win + P. I have a strong feeling it's because the Switchable graphics I have (Intel HD + Radeon 5060), so I'm looking for a way to make the computer always use a specified mode (i.e the current mode I'm on, that does show stuff on the screen) and force it to use it everytime? Any ideas? EDIT: I've Installed all the latest drivers I've found. Tried most of the solutions around the web for this problem. Updated the BIOS to UEFI (from HP Support Assistant), etc. Laptop is an HP- Envy 14

• mysql settings - using the available resources

  I've got a lot of processing work I need to run on a mysql server. I've installed mysql 5.1.45-community on a Win 2007 64bit. Its running on a xenon, 3ghz 6 processors with 8 gig ram. It doesn't seem to matter what queries I run (or the number I run at the same time), when I look in task manager, I'll see one processor is out at 100%. The other 5 are idol. Memory is static at 1.54 gig. When I installed mysql, I used the wizard and selected the default "server" (not workstation) option. I feel like I should be getting more bang for my buck. Is there something else I should be monitoring or something I should change to use the other system resources???

• Windows Server 2008 - unable to bind any TCP port

  OS: Win Server 2008 RC2 Windows firewall on (no effect when off) I have suddenly been plagued by an issue in which I cannot find any similar ones with a search. I am running about 20 game servers that bind to a UDP port, then bind to a TCP port 1 above the UDP port. Suddenly, a day ago, new TCP binds stopped functioning. Now, I have confirmed that other applications cannot listen on most ports. For example, I have a java program that I made a copy of, and tried the following ports: 33001, 23789, 89... completely random ports. As far as the applications already that have TCP bindings, such as HTTP and MySQL, only port 8080 was one port I discovered could work, and only for Apache. If applications would leave their default port they could not bind, however they returned to normal when the port was default. I've checked for listening applications through netstat and curports, also checked for any connections on these ports, and they're completely free.

  Similar to this related question, I came home and found that my media center pc showed this message, Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter Before I do anything with the (defective?) harddisk, what are the best first steps I can take to fix this with a minimum of damage? Normally the machine (Win Vista) is always on and never reboots by itself (Windows auto-updates are disabled too). Something must have caused it to reboot, though I'm sure we didn't have a power outage. The machine can't reboot on that disk, but it will boot on another disk I just plugged in for testing. I haven't changed anything, or even touched the machine, for several days, and it has been running fine until now. I did replace the power supply some weeks ago, because the old one suddenly stopped working. It has been working fine with the replacement PSU.

• Cannot see main user profile directory on old vista hdd on win7

  I have an old laptop HDD that ran Vista that I need to get some pictures and movies off of. I've attached it via SATA cable to my new Win 7 (64 bit) machine and it mounts fine, except I can't see the main user profile in the D:\Users directory. I've changed ownership and permissions for the D: drive to my C:\ Username but still no luck. I read something about it being caused by the UAC being active on the Vista machine. Is this true? Is there a way to disable this and gain access to the main profile without putting it back into the old laptop (it's fried and won't boot)?

  I'm trying to retrieve video files from the IE 8 cache for a user that's not an admin in Win 7. As a non admin user, I run Explorer as admin and still can't see the temp internet files for the non admin user. Only if I login as a user that is admin can I see the files.   I have an somewhat older Notebook with an original Windows XP Professional License Sticker underneath. This Notebook was erased completely once and now I want to install a new Windows XP Professional System on it using the key that's on the sticker. But there seems to be one problem: I am using an Windows XP Professional SP3 image I got from my university (thanks to MSDNAA). But somehow I cannot use the license key on the sticker with this installation. It keeps saying that this key is invalid. What can I do? Is this because I try to install a Win XP Professional with SP3 directly? Do I need another image to install this?

• Windows 7 CRC Error When Installing Fallout 3 [closed]

  Earlier today, I installed Fallout 3 on Windows XP perfectly fine. Then about 2 hours ago I installed Windows 7 and I would like to install Fallout 3. But, when I try to install Fallout 3 on Win 7, I get an error while in the middle of the install: CRC Error: The File C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Data\Video\B03.bik doesn't match the file in the setup's.cab file I forget the filename but it is the same each time I install. The disk literally went from the DVD-Rom to the case after the first install and straight from the case to the DVD-Rom. It's in perfect condition. My DVD-Rom is only about 2 months old and I've never had any problems with it. I don't understand what's going on. My user that I'm installing the game with is set as Administrator, as well.

  I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

  I first installed Windows 7. /dev/sda1 was the system reserved partition for Win 7, and /dev/sda2 was the C partition. Then I installed Linux Mint. After that, when I started the computer, I could see the "Windows 7 (/dev/sda1)" was listed in the end of boot menu, but I could boot into Windows 7. The only thing I can think of is I might make a mistake in choosing the place the grub was to be installed: I chose /dev/sda1 rather than /dev/sda by default. Can anyone provide any advice?   I have a Win 2003 server and I'm using Ionics Isapi Rewrite Filter to redirect requests made to a Web Site configured in IIS to another Apache2 Server in a server not exposed to the Internet. The Web Site has its host headers configured to catch requests for the specific site, and the redirection is being done with the ProxyPass directive. This is working OK. So far the scenario, my question is: I'd like to add a server certificate to the Apache server, but I don´t know if I need to add the certificate to both Apache and IIS sites. I think I still don´t get the theory behind this and would like to know from someone with expertise in the field the right way to implement this. Thank you in advance.

• Dialog box in Adobe reader is scrambled

  I use win 7 and Adobe reader 11. After updating from ADobe reader 9 to 10 (automatically) I can´t see a proper dialog boxx when i print the PDF. EIther it har veryyyyy big letters or the text is missing in the Printing option box. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times, but there is no difference. I have also tried to download the sherife sans font. When I hade Adoobe reader 8, there was no problem.   I am unable to configure a PHP/MySQL/Apache environment on my local machine using XAMPP. In my xampp control panel the Apache and MySQL status is as started, but localhost is not working. I have tried the following method but still i am unable to execute: I tried to reinstall after uninstalling several time. I changed the "Listen 80" to Listen localhost:80, localhost:8080, 127.0.0.1:80,127.0.0.1:8080, MySystemIP:80/8080 and tried to execute the relevant url in my browser. I executed the netstat -noa and tasklist and found Apache is is using Port80. Skype is also not using the port80. I edited the firewall to allow port80. Also disabled the firewall. Is there any other solution to fix my problem. I remember 8 months back everything worked properly. Now when i try to reinstall xampp the issue raised it. I am Using Win-xp os. Thanks in advance

• WHS - client does not shutdown after backup

  I have my WHS/Win 7 laptop configured to do automatic backups through the connector. The backups run just fine every night. I put my computer in hibernate when I go to bed, it wakes and runs the backups, but then it doesn't go back into hibernate or shutdown. I'd like to be able to force it to shutdown after the backups are completed. I don't see a scheduled task in the system for the WHS backups. Any idea how I can get my laptop to shutdown after the backups are complete? Thanks.

• Back / Forward mouse buttons do not work in VMWare Workstation 6.5 Guest OS

  I am using a Logitech G9 mouse and running VMWare Workstation 6.5.3 on Vista x64. The guest OS is Win XP, and has the most current version of VMWare Tools installed. Left / right buttons and mouse wheel scrolling work fine in the guest OS, but the back / forward buttons are apparently not recognized. I have tried installing the Logitech software inside the guest OS as well, but it still did not recognize the back / forward buttons. (I didn't really expect this to work since the guest OS doesn't actually see the mouse hardware as a Logitech G9 directly anyway.) I vaguely remember seeing something a while back about editing the virtual machine config file to specify a 5-button mouse rather than the default 3-button setup, but I can't seem to find any specifics on how to do so in the VMWare documentation. Does anyone know if such a workaround exists, or is 5-button mouse functionality just not supported?

• Remote Desktop settings not being applied for user

  We have a number of Win 2003 servers for which we have Remote Desktop enabled. Each user has their profile edited so that they can only connect for 2 hours maximum and have 30 minutes idle time, after which they are disconnected and the session closed. On one server however, the administrator account does not have the maximum session limit working. We can stay connected for days if we want. Originally this was how it was setup, and we later changed the profile for all users so that there are limits. We have rebooted the server a couple of times since, and the Management Console shows the limits. If we are idle for too long we are disconnected. Other users are having all the limits observed. Any suggestions?

• Use Modern Apps in Windows 7

  It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run windows 8 (Modern Apps) in windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?
