• Ubuntu boots to totally blank after I installed some graphic card updates

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, dual boot with win7 on ThinkPad T400, I followed Ubuntu update hints and installed some update for my ATI Radeon graphic card, but when I boot to Ubuntu(means I can still load GRUB), the tragedy happened, the screen goes to blank and no matter what key stroke, I can not get any responds, I try to go to text terminal, but impossible! However when I hit the power button, the computer would pop out the Ubuntu shutdown screen briefly and shut down. I figure out I should delete the updates package of my graphic card, but I don't even get a chance to go to text terminal, please help me!

• Ubuntu One downloads already existing files

  I've uploaded some files to Ubuntu One from my home laptop and begin to download it on my work laptop. Then I've got a USB and copied these files directly through the USB driver. My problem now is that Ubuntu One still downloading these files although I've copied them to Ubuntu One folder. I need it to consider the already existing files as synced and don't download it again. And I need Ubuntu One for further use so I can't simply quit it. How could I mark the already existing files as synced ?

• Connection refused after installing vsftp on Ubuntu 8.04 with fail2ban

  I have been using an Ubuntu 8.04 server with fail2ban for a while now (12+ months) and using ftp over SSH without any problems. I have a new user that needs to put files onto the server from an IP modem. I have installed vsftp (sudo apt-get install vsftp) and everything installed correctly. I have created an ftp user on the server following this guide. Whenever I try to connect to the server with my ftp program (filezilla) I get an immediate response of: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server". I have looked into fail2ban and cannot find any problems. • Can I upgrade Lucid to Precise with the 12.04.1 desktop image?

  I am running Ubuntu Lucid and would like to upgrade to Precise, using the normal ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-...iso image. So far I have tried upgrading with the CD but was not given the choice. Searching on the internet, I have found upgrading using the ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-...iso image works, but I don't have great internet access. Is upgrading from Lucid possible, with the ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop image?

• How to chroot Ubuntu+1?

  What is the recommended way to use chroot from Ubuntu Stable (in my case 11.04) with Ubuntu+1 (11.10)? Linked (but probably separate) is "Is there anything special that I need to do in order to get Xorg working?" Reason I ask is because I'd like to test a few GTK3 programs without losing my current (stable) Ubuntu, or having to get my data synced. I thought about maybe running a SSH server from 11.10 and then using SSH's X forwarding, but that seems rather cumbersome.

• Ubuntu 10.04 network manager issues

  I was using the default network manager to connect to my wi-fi network, but if the connection is dropped or router restarted the network manager wont reconnect automatically after i guess a couple of tries and just gives a pop-up to connect manually . To avoid this annoyance I installed WICD but though it does try to reconnect to the network after a drop in connection it is unable to resolve the ip address and i am left with an even bigger annoyance . 1. Is there a way to counter either of these issues ? 2. Something like a background process that will check network status periodically and then try to connect to a favored network ? • Large uploaded file won't display in Ubuntu One but is included in file usage

  On Ubuntu 10.04, I uploaded a single 711 MB. My total file usage in Ubuntu One went up to 877MB, which is about right, but the file doesn't show in Ubuntu One so I can't download or delete it. Either the file is there and I can't see it for some reason. Or the file is not there and the total file usage figure is wrong. Does anyone know what has happened? I have a free account but am well below my 5GB limit.

• Access Windows Home Server from an Ubuntu Computer on your Network

  If you’re a Windows Home Server user, there may be times when you need to access it from an Ubuntu machine on your network. Today we take a look at the process of accessing files on your home server from Ubuntu. Note: In this example we’re using Windows Home Server with PowerPack 3, and Ubuntu 10.04 running on a home network. Access WHS from Ubuntu To access files on your home server from Ubuntu, click on Places then select Network. You should now see your home server listed in the Network folder as well as other Windows machines…double-click the server to access it. If you don’t see your server listed, you might need to go into Windows Network \ Workgroup and find it there. You’ll be prompted to enter in the correct credentials for WHS just as you would when accessing it from a Windows machine. It’s your choice if you want to have the password remembered or not…make your selection and click Connect. Now you will see the available folders on your home server. In this example we signed in with Administrator credentials, so we have access to everything. Double-click on the folder share you want to access content from…here we see MS Office documents on the server. Or, here we take a look at a music folder with various MP3 files which you can make Ubuntu play. You can access the files directly from the server, provided there is a Linux app that can handle the file type. In this example we opened a Word document in OpenOffice. Here we’re playing an MKV movie file from the server in Totem Movie Player.   You can easily search for files on the server as well… If you want to store your Ubuntu files on WHS it’s just a matter of dragging them to the correct WHS folder you want them in. If you’re using an Ubuntu computer on your home network and need to access files from Windows Home Server, luckily it’s a straight-forward process. You’ll often have to find the correct software to use Windows files, but even that’s getting much easier with version 10.04. • Facebook android app keeps crashing even though there are no errors in my code. Why?

  If you import the facebook SDK library, the code works (ignore the deprecated methods for now lol) and there are no errors or warnings. However, when I run my facebook app on my Android 2.2 or 4.2 emulator, the app crashes either upon opening or after the log on screen. Why? Is it because I'm not implementing Async Task? If so, how does that work? • Why can't I connect to a Cisco wireless access point?

  I'm running a Lucid Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron 600m and I was not able to connect to the wireless network at the Hacker Dojo in Mountain View yesterday. There were plenty of other people on the network - MS, Mac, and Linux boxes - but my laptop would never get an ip address. I can connect to my home network, which is open, and I've never had a problem connecting at the coffee shop, which uses WPA. The Hacker Dojo is running WPA and we checked the password a number of times but got no love. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. • Ubuntu 12.04 OpenCL with Intel and Radeon?

  I want to setup my Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenCL(Open Computing Language) support for i7 2600k and Radeon HD5870. My Monitor is connected to the integrated Graphics of the i7. Intel OpenCL SDK is installed and working. Iteration of avaliable OpenCL devices shows 2 entries for Intel. As recommended I installed AMD APP SDK 2.6 first and then the fglrx driver. I installed fglrx from Ubuntu repositories. This works fine till here. When I run aticonfig --inital -f and restart the system I get into trouble.   Trying to run ghettoVCB for the first time here. I am using a NAS that is set up as a datastore on the host. I did a dry run and it completed without error. The VM is ~500GB and there is only one on the host that I'm trying to backup. The logfile mimics some of the above and is sitting at "Creating Snapshot..." and nothing else is coming in. Is the vmdk on the NAS showing all those GB because of the provisioning or something? i.e. is the size of the file not necessarily indicative of the amount of actual data that has been copied? Is there are reason it might be "Stuck" at 10%? i.e. could it really be taking this long? Any other tips? Thanks. Edit: as soon as I hit the Submit button, I glance over to see that it has incremented to 11% done. Good to know it'll be complete sometime around when the sun explodes.

As none of the "remote" has a "*" in front (worst it had a blank space in front), does it mean no time sync source is selected? The offset just keep increasing. • Configuring vlans on Cisco SG200 series switch with Ubuntu server

  I created a vlan on Ubuntu with vconfig tool with 21 as id and eth1 as the host port. I connected eth1 to one of the ports on the swtich (GE23) as all ports trunk by default. In the webgui I created a vlan named test with the id 21 and I made GE2 are port as an access port. In port to vlan mapping I selected vlan 21 and added it port GE2 by selecting untagged option. I have assigned 192.168.1.1/24 as the ip of eth1.21 on Ubuntu. If I connect another cleint pc to GE2 port with a ip of 192.168.1.2/24 I cannot ping the server ip (192.168.1.1/24). Ping from server to client also does not work. I inspected packets that are sent out eth1 on the server and I could see the vlan 21 tag. And I connect the other end of the cable to a different Linux pc and inspected the packets but no vlan tags can be seen. What could be preventing me from getting vlans working? Edit 1 screenshots:

Is it possible for me to install 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit ubuntu and 32-bit Windows Vista, so I can choose between them at boot and share data, and without uninstalling my 32-bit Ubuntu? • upgraded to OSX 10.6.6 - now cannot sudo

  I've been using sudo until now. After an upgrade to 10.6.6, now sudo gives me incorrect password. My user has admin rights, and i can execute admin functions from the GUI (such as System Prefs, updating software etc). However, within Terminal, sudo has stopped accepting the password. I have repaired permissions and restarted. Some pointers ask me to use Directory Utility, but in this version it does not have a "set root user" option. I downloaded ServerAdminTool 10.5.7 but this does not work on my system. Some say to add myself to "wheel" group, but i need sudo for that. Some say if i am in admin group, i should be able to sudo, but this is not happening. (Using OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6, earlier 10.5.8) MODERATOR: please delete this question. The issue had to do with Textpander expanding the password resulting in sudo failing. Not an OS upgrade issue.
